Guy Leaves Key Under Doormat For Thieves To Find So They Could Have A Chance To Change Their Life
There are thousands of different little ways for us to make our lives feel a tiny bit more interesting and special. Back in the good old days of childhood, we didn’t even have to think about those things—they used to come to us naturally. Each day, the world around us seemed vast and full of pure magic. Fast forward to now, well, a lot has changed. But I wholeheartedly believe that growing up absolutely doesn’t mean that we should stop playing and having fun.
And as I mentioned before, there are thousands of ways for us to do that. For instance, one of my friends likes to leave sweet little notes between the pages of library books, so the next person reading the book will find it and it will possibly make their day. For her, it makes the world feel more exciting and mysterious. Why am I suddenly talking about this? Well, there’s this video on TikTok that recently went viral and it immediately reminded me of this whole making-your-life-feel-a-tiny-bit-more-special thing.

In the video, a guy named Alex Biron explains why he always leaves a key under his doormat, in a very obvious place. The video has gone viral and it currently has 15.5 million views and over 4 million likes as well as over 20 thousand comments.
”The idea for the TikTok came to me randomly while I was standing in my driveway. I wanted to pack mystery and inspiration into a real world TikTok,” Alex told Bored Panda.
Turns out, Alex always leaves a key under his doormat

“This is a key. It goes under my welcome mat in a very obvious place. Alex, why would you do that? Isn’t somebody going to break into your house? Well, actually, there are a lot of break-ins in this area. And every 6 months to a year, I’ll notice that the key is missing, which means people are trying,” the guy explains in the video.
“But here’s a thing. It’s not the key to my house. It doesn’t unlock anything around here,” Alex explains in the video

“But here’s a thing. It’s not the key to my house. It doesn’t unlock anything around here. The reason I put it down there is that… If a robber finds that key, there’s gonna be this moment in between the joy he feels thinking he’s about to get in, to the disappointment realizing it doesn’t… And I hope there’ll be a moment of reflection there, where he’ll think ‘what am I doing with my life?’ And maybe he’ll change,” Alex continues.

“You’re probably also wondering, what is that key? I’ll tell you. If any of you robbers are seeing this TikTok, look at the number on that key. It unlocks a safe deposit box at the West End Vancity bank in Vancouver, and in that safety box, we’ve got some money, we’ve got a self-help book, and a chance for you to start a new life. Good luck!” Alex says in the video.

“I think it’s unlikely that someone will actually use the key but I plan to make a scavenger hunt soon with different treasures that people can find!” Alex told us.

We were curious to ask Alex how he felt about his TikTok going viral. “It was amazing to go viral yesterday because today is my birthday! I couldn’t have asked for a better present,” the man expressed his excitement.
We also asked Alex to tell our readers a little bit about himself. “I’m just a regular dude who loves skateboarding and hanging out with friends,” the guy told us. “I decided to post on TikTok because I noticed a lot of people were making fun of it, and usually what people make fun of is the next big thing! Also, I was stuck at home during lockdown.”

I agree... I think the hope for a self-reflection moment might be wishful thinking...
Load More Replies...Now he told ever robber out there (Robbers do have tik tok too or they have bored panda) so now when they go to his house there gonna go through a window ... what the man is thinking is kinda a hope wish cause maybe the robber has a rush from getting into others house he ain't thinking about anything about how others feel or about his future.
Or try to figure out how to rob the safe deposit box at West End Vancity Bank in Vancouver. But only after breaking a window to get in and ransacking his house while robbing him blind. A better idea is to adopt a couple very large and protective dogs whose barks are very deep, loud, and intimidating—-but only to people looking and/or acting suspiciously (like trying to break in).
Load More Replies...Am I the only person that thinks he’s an idiot? Respect the mindset, but why?
That's privilege... not knowing how desperate someone can be in times of struggle, to the point where human decency is no longer an option. Every person deserves a chance, but not everyone makes it
Load More Replies...nope Im in Canada and we have break ins when Youre home and its 11am! No s**t head is going to have self reflection on his life because you pranked him with the wrong key. Theyll smash a window.
Well he doesn't say that this has ever happened to him.
Load More Replies...Bloody idiot trying to use social media to look like he’s woke and kind when he’s being moronic. The robber will be pissed off and find another way in. They won’t have a lightbulb moment since this is the lifestyle they’ve chosen. If he truly wants to ‘help’ why not go to a troubled youth group to mentor them so they don’t get to the point of B&A’s.
Great point. He’s self serving. There’s nothing selfless about this. It’s all about him.
Load More Replies...Isn't everyone now going to flood his house knowing what the key opens? So what is the purpose of telling everyone this? Attention?
If robbers are seeing this on tik tok? Sorry but that is some self righteous BS. You hope they have a second thought..okay, sure, whatever, but they stick around to unlock your national treasure style hunt to get to your safety deposit box..where they will be caught on camera... what!?
The more likely event is that someone else takes it all for themself, and this dodgy deed will not even happen.
Load More Replies...Someone gonna get pissed odd and break in another way. Sentinent is good but I highly doubt someone will refledt and change.
Giving them the key will mean that before they enter the property they'll check if anybody's home. They'll look in windows and if they see something they like, then they will get in key or no key.
Thought he was gonna say that hopefully in an attempt to figure out what the key opens, the cops show up or an alarm goes off or something like that...like a stalling device while the CCTV captures them .....
If you think "reflection" will make someone change their criminal ways, then you are incredibly naïve. A person breaking into your home likely has mental health issues, and definitely has had a lifetime worth of events that brought them to this point. A bit of "reflection" won't undo all of that.
first off if you are using 'tik tok' you are goofy...you must like what the Chinese just gave us...well they have another plan with tis tok...no wonder this world is failing we are just saying come on in and invade us...we will give you a key just like this!!! Is it a fad thing or to be part of a group culture that like being used.for whatever the Chinese bring...it isn't about the 'royal people' in a sense but its about the CCP...the Chinese are just robots...they have no choice...thats what they want here....
UM - for the idiots out there who think they can just show up at a bank: just having a key doesn't get you access to a safe deposit box. You also have to show ID and your signature better match the one on record.
This is the dumbest thing on the internet. The criminal will try the key, see it doesn't work, and then get in another way. What kind of soy boy fantasy is this moron living in...
Yeah, he'll change in that moment. To a rock with which to smash your window and to trash your house for jerking his chain. Seriously odd thought process there.
Person finds themself acting our of desperation in ways their younger self never imagined. Nice guy implies that it's their fault. Another person acts out of self-interest. Wise man thinks a key that doesn't fit will cause them to reflect. I'm guessing he's making videos because his book isn't selling too well.
No. The robber will NOT "have a moment of reflection" at all. Let's face reality, the robber will have a "moment of being really pissed off" and you are being a successful troll. And seeing as you videoed it, an attention-seeking troll. But seeing as it's serving up deserved Karma to the robber, you're forgiven. But you're not forgiven for the "helping robbers via reflection" bullshit.
Considering a lot of thieves are drug addicts looking for ways to have their next high I highly doubt there’s a moment of reflection. If anything is a moment of oh sh*t it doesn’t work, what now? Considering the amount of resources and agencies that exist to help people achieve better lives the idea they turn to theft is really sad and pathetic. I’m not a fan of thieves.
I don't know which bank he does business with, but as far as I know, you need to be an authorized person with matching signature to access a deposit box at a bank. Often staff ask for ID too. A random dude can't just show up with a key and the bank let's that person access the box. And how is this random dude supposed to know which bank location? AND the bank only gives you two keys, so once your out of keys, you have to pay over $200 for a professional locksmith to open the box and replace the lock. I smell BS
Bro... Why share that with the FREAKING WORLD... Now people know your secret...
I am the only one that finds goodie-two-shoes like this bloke annoying? There's money and book to start a new life in a safety deposit box... pathetic.
You're not. Don't know if he's really this naive, or just a classic twat looking for attention.
