For those of you interested in this kind of thing, you'll want to check out WWOOF as well! I'm an experienced WWOOF-er, and let me tell you, it is brilliant! It's very similar to this, except it's in exchange for farm work. Normally you negotiate with the farmers before hand, asking how much work they expect of you, and then the rest of the day is yours to see the sights of anywhere in the world! Normally I find myself picking pears or something, but there are all kinds of farms you can choose from. I love agriculture, so this is a win-win for me. Hopefully some of you might be interested too!
It doesn't hurt to be a bit skeptical of something that sounds too good to be true. My husband and I live rent free in NYC from petsitting, but only after spending lots of time building a clientele, and actually truly loving and wanting to take care of animals. It is not for those without a passion for animal care. Additionally, it can be challenging to line up petsits. You are convincing someone to move into their home and take care of their loved one while they are away. As the owner of a serious, bonded, full time pet sitting business I'm so happy the people now expect my service for Free and others want to pay to do my job. This is how I pay the bills and I take it very seriously. What kind of "mansion" owner doesn't want a professional pet care provider and would rather have someone who is on "vacation" and probably won't keep their pets' daily schedules in tact?

We are on a pet sit at the moment for 2 months in Cambodia. We are fortunate hat we have taken early retirement. No need to use that site.

It needs to be said that this is FAR more challenging than they make it sound here. I am an ideal housesitter and been on this site 2 years and ... nothing. I've been told by the company that I just need to be more flexible and travel to other countries. I don't know anyone that can travel to Spain for a 3-day sit and then to Australia for a 6-day sit and then... where do you go until your next sit a month later? If you can do that, great. Also most of the sitting needs are for a few days or a week - not a month or more that would work for many of us. I think the site offers a good service - just saying it didn't work for me (and I got all the verifications including the extra charge I paid for a criminal background check). I won't re-join.
There are many more (free) alternatives, we use a mix of House Sitting World (FB) Nomador.com

And no one says you have to pet sit for free in your hometown-- it is generally understood that if you are pet sitting for someone where you already live, meaning you have to leave your home to stay at theirs' in the same town, they will pay you for that, because in that case, staying at their place is of no benefit for you....

Sleeping or having sex in a strangers bed isn't my thing but still better then some hotel where hundreds of strangers slept or slept with someone. Cleaner more private and with free four legged children. I want this.
