Hardwork doesn't always lead to success. A lot of people that became successful through "hard work" don't usually include one thing in their success stories: the role of luck. Some of them were lucky to be born in the right place, to the right people, at the right time, happened to go to the right school, happened to make the right friends, etc. For every success story, there are thousands and millions that did the same amount of hardwork and got nowhere. I'm going to get downvotes here, but you need to swap out Bill for Richard. Yes, Mr Gates has done some deplorable things while gaining his millions. But he has done philanthropic things that the others haven't even considered. Demonstrably tried to improve things for the rest of humanity. The others? No bathroom breaks and trains that barely run at all never mind on time. Oh, and I'm damn sure it wasn't his age that stopped him taking part in the Prick Space Race, so that's a point in his favour too. In my experience, being rude and condescending turns out to be a sign of stupidity, not intelligence.
Sheldon was actually very true to life for a lot of smart autistic people..but he would be what we would be without adapting skills. And most of us have adapted to our environment.. There's a proven link between being highly intelligent and socially inept, the writers (and viewers) of these shows don't always get it right. Sheldon isn't far off the mark, Scorpion shows it better, and Hannibal Lecter is a psychopath so is a different kettle of fish.
Yeah. I have been shown to be smart and I do struggle with social stuff. But I am also very friendly, fun, and generally extroverted. There are just parts of social skills that I struggle with (like I had to be manually taught how to make appropriate small talk, smile, make eye contact, hang out with friends, etc). I also have ADHD and have had to deal with RSD, being hyper, and social anxiety.

Well, some are in real life, and I wish to f**k that society would drop this idea that it's okay to be an asshole if you're a genius. I don't know - people with Asperger's syndrome for example are often very intelligent but lack emotional components. You can quickly be considered absolutely rude and don't even understand why for example if you just told somebody the truth but did not think about "packaging it nicely" first...

Being rude definitely doesn’t make someone smart, but there does seem to be some correlation between extreme intelligence and lack of social skills, which can translate to rudeness.
Problem here, is that many highly intelligent people get annoyed with dealing with stupid interaction combined with the fact that many highly intelligent people I am talking 145+ IQ often have fairly low EQ, so they struggle with normal interaction which makes them seem rude even if it is unintentional. Again this is not a rule and not set in stone
Low EQ mostly results in people that are shy and awkward, not people who are assholes. Someone with a high IQ and low EQ is far more likely to put their foot in their mouth rather than insult everyone like a douche. House, Rick and Lecter are used as examples here and all of them have pretty normal EQs...they just don't care that they hurt others.

Hmmm engineer here - I have a few colleagues who are really smart but rude. They get sick of hearing stupid engineers saying dumb things. I get it, I'm not like it, but I get it.
My dad is a physicist and let me tell you Sheldon is absolutely real.
I once talked my friend out of casting someone in a show because the person was an asshole. Sure, he was a super talented actor, but working with him would have been a nightmare. My friend went with the second best actor instead. Second best had a terrific personality and wound up really helping bring the best performances out of the other actors. It was the right choice.
Sheldon is not being an asshole by choice. At the end of the show, you can see that he begins to understand the world around him a bit better.
Most of those asshole "intelligent" people are narcissists trying to convince you they are REALLY smart. My father is one. He always gold us how high his IQ is (156)and that Mensa begged him to join. All just tales from a crazy, narcisstic man. But he made it very far with his storys and his charisma. He was the head of a big bank in europe. Signs of intelligence manifest in many forms. Someone being intelligent when it comes to maths, art, politics etc doesn't make them a good person, or mean they have social intelligence or prowess in other fields. But it does mean that they require a certain environment to fully function, and anything disturbing their equilibrium is seen and treated as a nuisance. I have first hand experience of this, but it's my choice when and how to react in these situations.
Hannibal Lecter doesn't belong on this list. He was always well mannered and polite and the book often mentions how he detested rudeness and uncivility.

Yes. When someone says, "You must believe me because I'm an expert. I can't explain it to you because you're not smart enough to understand", 9 times out of 10 that means "I really don't have any coherent reasons for what I'm saying but I'm going to try to intimidate you into silence". Most really intelligent people I've known have been anxious to explain how they came to their conclusions. They just love to explain the difficult process they went through to collect evidence and analyze it. Ask them questions that indicate that you are really interested in how they got there and they are excited to tell you.

I had a 184 IQ by some tests and was a complete asshole - then I was hit in the head by a truck - 99 math (below average) 110 verbal/spatial, plus short term memory issues, loss of 70% of my vocabulary, my perfect internal GPS and photographic memory... I had to WORK at things for the first time in my life - Not that I recommend getting broadsided, but it was one of the best things that ever happened to me as with the loss of all that intelligence in those areas, I learned a little compassion, respect, patience, tolerance and perseverance. There are a LOT of really super smart people who are total assholes. I was both. Now, a lot less "smart" and a whole lot more human.
I'll cut House some slack because he was in constant pain and addicted to pain killers. Both can make a person an intolerable jerk. But overall, being a condescending ass is more a sign of low-self esteem than intelligence.

Actually, I have a theory on this: dopamine depletion. Dopamine is basically a "reward drug". It encourages certain behaviors. So my theory is that when you have someone super intelligent as a child, they get a dopamine high from all kinds of things: learning something new, solving a problem, making something. They get applaus and encouragement at their rapid progress. They're booming so far so fast that they're constantly high on dopamine. BUT, then their dopamine receptors get worn out. Suddenly, nothing makes them happy anymore. There's no joy left in discovery, no joy in solving a problem. Nobody's applauding anymore because their abilities are taken for granted, or worse, adults complain that "You're making the rest of us look bad! You're just being a selfish showoff!" and "You're just jerk!" Add to that the feelings isolation and loneliness from growing up "different", moving a different speed, talking another language. It's no wonder they grow up surly drug addicts

I have to contradict. I knew one guy in school who was/is highly intelligent and educated. He has now a PhD and earns a ton of money. Worst thing is I know that he is condescending and that other people have no value for him at all. He would literally leave you bleed to death and walk by without even looking. House is a really bad doctor in my opinion. Many of his cases would have come to a better conclusion if he just stuck to standard diagnostic procedures. Electrophysiology or a cranial sonography? Never heard of that, let's do explorative brain surgery instead. But Doc Martin is even worse. Most of the eposiodes are just him messing up because he refuses to even listen to patients telling their symptoms.
House (character) was actually a very good doctor if you think about it this way. He didn't care wether he lost his job or even went to jail to get a diagnosis for his patients. The show also addressed what is probably the one biggest factor in finding a correct diagnosis that people lie to their doctors. Aside from that it was a television show no way would a physician be allowed to practice under the constant influence of narcotics (malpractice insurance requires routine testing) and not all of the tests are surgeries mentioned were standard of practice...and cranial sonography is not even thing you can't ultrasound thru the skull or any bone for that matter ...MRI or PET scan would be a more appropriate modality

True, but in some jobs, if you are very good you can "afford" to be rude. This does not make it right, but if you are the only person who can fix this server, you can get away with a lot of things other people would get fired for. Generally, I agree, but sometimes you hear such stupidity that you get the genuine and spontaneous reaction that might seem condescending for the viewers, but really it should be taken as useful feedback to think about. For example, I don't care you're not British (neither am I, for that matter), you just can't confuse Wham! for The Beatles. The technology used to create Last Christmas didn't even exist during Beatles era, the best they had were the prototypes and early versions of all those electronics. True story.

Unhealthy weight. I’m not talking about being fit and thin and making people feel bad about their bodies. Im not talking about having a few extra pounds and making people feel bad for that. I have a few extra pounds, I’m not super fit, but I’m relatively healthy. Everyone’s body is different. Healthy means a lot of different things.
I’m talking about normalizing morbidly obese people as beautiful and something to be celebrated. It’s dangerous especially if children see them as someone to look up to. Then they’ll think it’s ok for your body to carry around so much weight that your heart and lungs are working overtime to keep you alive. It will lead to devastating later years in life as you age and your body slows down. You’ll be at risk for cardiovascular issues, you’ll probably die before your time, and the last few years of your life will be bed ridden while you waste away.
While I agree that there is such a thing as unhealthy weight, you still won't see me attacking the "body positivity movement". Because for people to change for the better, the first step has to be letting go of the self-hatred and shame that plagues the seriously overweight and drives them into a self-destructive spiral of self-harming and self-comforting behavior. If the body positivity movement helps anyone let go of the guilt and self-hatred that's poisoned their lives then more good than harm has been done, and it's not like body negativity ever did anyone any good. You can't shame people into being thinner or healthier, that's not how humans work.

Toxic positivity. There’s a huge difference between being optimistic and having raised colored glasses on. We’re all people, and we all experience negative and positive emotions. The only way you can properly get over your emotions is by allowing yourself to feel them. Glossing over your emotions with an aura of “Everything’s fine” isn’t going to solve anything, and it’s just gonna make you feel bad.
Failures in political leadership. I feel more and more we are becoming less critical of failed character in our leaders.
Student loans.
Education is getting more expensive by the day and the added burden on a student in paying back a student loan helps nobody.
Furthermore people encourage student loans as though the students are obligated to take them if they pursue higher studies. Pure nonsense.
Hating police. I've worked places that police don't go. You all don't know how good you have it.
I don't hate police in general, but I've had my arm and nearly my skull broken during the 2001 Genoa protests (unprovoked attack on peaceful protesters) and I was in the Diaz school raid (but luckily wasn't hurt as I was hiding in a closet). Sooo... there's good apples and bad apples... but the bad apples do a lot of damage as they are put in a position of power.
Students overwhelmed by homework when it isn’t necessary. I’m excluding situations like when the workloads from classes are reasonable and happen to pile on one day or students who aren’t organized, etc. This whole thing is a grey area, but sleep, burnout, mental health exists.
A little coordination between teachers could solve this problem. I can remember the times where we had to do an assignment for English and an hour later our French teacher came up with a similar time consuming assignment. When we explained that that meant we had to choose which one we could do, he postponed the assignment for 2 weeks. But other teachers just said "Deal with it." It's education, teacher, we're not operating a multibillion dollar business with deadlines and targets here.
Not caring about education. So many people obviously didn't pay attention in elementary school and don't care about it.
Over here, the government doesn't see education as a "top priority" while I think it's one of THE most important things

Defining your personality by your illnesses/disabilities - both physical and mental. It's wonderful to educate the world and promote acceptance, but when it starts becoming the crutch you lean on to defend toxic behavior, it's a problem. I'm sick of depression and anxiety and chronic illness being treated as a "quirky personality trait" rather than real, life-altering issues. It makes people minimize your experience and think you're just exaggerating because "x tiktok star manages so why can't you?". Idk, man, maybe it's because these kinds of conditions manifest differently in each person, or *le gasp* social media isn't real. As a bonus: giving your two-cents on someone's health when you have no business doing so. I'll listen to my doctors, not your sudden need to plug health fads.
Totally agree. As a bipolar and clinical depression sufferer who was diagnosed about 30 years ago and heavily medicated since, the current 'trend' of people self-diagnosing these conditions drives me nuts. If people had actually experienced any serious mental health condition, believe me, they would go out of their way to NOT have these conditions! In my case, it's been a very long battle involving heaps of medication, psychiatrists, being locked in the loony bin a couple of times etc., that has been extremely difficult at times. More times than I can count, actually. Mental illness is not something to be ashamed of, but it's certainly not something you should wish on yourself. Life is hard enough!

Being mean to substitute teachers. When i walked in my French class the other day I had a sub and it was my two friends in that class who were acting out the most. One was holding his desk above his head, and the other flat out refused to do her work, saying she didn’t do her work anyway and would rather read Warriors (Wings of Fire is better honestly). The kids in front of me were playing video games, and ended up not getting their work done. And really just middle schoolers in general are terrible. There’s this one jerk on the bus who threatens people with his drumsticks, jumps on the seats when the bus is moving, and throws trash out the window. I confronted him about this, and the next day he tried to run me over on his bike. Fortunately though, he went to my neighbors house where they were playing football and he got hit right in crotch. He deserved it.
Subscriptions! Why is everything a subscription now? There are a lot of programs I would buy if they were purchases. But no one can afford twenty $30 subscriptions a month.

A onesided view, at best with honest intentions, usually only asking when they sure are NTA or totally out of their minds anyway, and a lot more than TA in the case in question - compared to the issues many people display there, the subject of these threads usually isn't even worth mentioning. Nothing is to gain out of that, but reassurance of the cheapest kind - either in people agreeing with one, or in people, generally being soooo bad that they even disagree. I'm not Christian and have zero family worth spending time with. But I still get s**t for not celebrating and I still lose days of work (and pay) because companies close. But if I want to take time off for Beltane or Samhain (holidays that she very important to me) I'm given s**t for making things up and letting my colleagues down. Seriously?
Defining your personality by your illnesses/disabilities - both physical and mental. It's wonderful to educate the world and promote acceptance, but when it starts becoming the crutch you lean on to defend toxic behavior, it's a problem. I'm sick of depression and anxiety and chronic illness being treated as a "quirky personality trait" rather than real, life-altering issues. It makes people minimize your experience and think you're just exaggerating because "x tiktok star manages so why can't you?". Idk, man, maybe it's because these kinds of conditions manifest differently in each person, or *le gasp* social media isn't real. As a bonus: giving your two-cents on someone's health when you have no business doing so. I'll listen to my doctors, not your sudden need to plug health fads.
Totally agree. As a bipolar and clinical depression sufferer who was diagnosed about 30 years ago and heavily medicated since, the current 'trend' of people self-diagnosing these conditions drives me nuts. If people had actually experienced any serious mental health condition, believe me, they would go out of their way to NOT have these conditions! In my case, it's been a very long battle involving heaps of medication, psychiatrists, being locked in the loony bin a couple of times etc., that has been extremely difficult at times. More times than I can count, actually. Mental illness is not something to be ashamed of, but it's certainly not something you should wish on yourself. Life is hard enough!
