Being rude in general. In the case of those who deal with a continuous stream of customers, there's the extra burden of not getting respite to recover. If someone is rude to me, I can get up from my desk and go for a walk; a cashier has to carry on. I've worked in retail and mad respect to good-natured employees in stores and eateries. For those who aren't, that's okay as long as they do their jobs (some people are more serious in demeanor, others may be having a hard day, or they're doing the job while hoping for something else).

I was at a Tim Hortons in a suburban well off area one day and the clerk was obviously new to Canada. Clearly new to the job. There were 2 teenagers with designer clothes etc making fun of her and laughing at her ( to each other) while this poor girl served them. I was disgusted. people need to stop thinking that working a min wage service job means the person is uneducated or lazy OR lacks ambition. Not everyone was born into a family that could afford university. People need to feed themselves and work to survive and keep a roof over their head. Work is work and should be respected.

As a server for 22 years, I can totally relate to this one. By far being a server is the hardest job I've ever had. It affects you mentally physically and emotionally.

It seems to be a peculiarly American attitude that anyone in a service industry is somehow a lesser human and deserving of no respect. The idea that the constantly misunderstood and misquoted notion of "the customer is always right" somehow gives you the right to treat someone else like a slave is baffling to me. I agree with you all! Food & retail service workers, sanitation workers, bus drivers, they are all making our lives better. A small percentage are just going through the motions for a paycheck but most are dedicated to their work. If a clerk or service worker is distracted or short with me, I usually find that they are either in pain or have serious issues happening in their lives and regardless of that, they are here in front of me, doing their jobs for meager wages.

May I say the same but for care assistants, we get physically attacked by clients (not their fault) but then we get disciplined for it, my colleague was practically scalped by a client before her wedding and my bosses refused to pay her and put her on a disciplinary. My manager has sent disgustingly rude emails before at 3am which woke staff up she then demanded an immediate reply. Hundreds of things they've done to us staff if only I thought enough of them to remember and I really couldn't give less of a s**t now if I tried neither could my colleagues which is a shame

not only these jobs but anyone that works with the public. I work at a telephone answering service and its so disturbing how some people treat others over the phone. I get sworn at and threatened on a daily basis...even had someone say they would hurt me physically if they could find me. People need to realize that we are here to help them...especially those that call doctors after hours...just thank us for being there to help instead of treating us like dirt

I like to give them some positive vibes. I was at a football game the other night and the beer line was taking FOREVER, everyone was bitching about it. When I got to the counter I could see the stress on the guy's face. He was moving as fast as he could. I ordered and told him " You're doing a great job!" He smiled and I could tell he really needed to hear that.
That's fair enough, but too often the customer is on the receiving end of rudeness and incompetence. When you work in retail, it's not an opportunity to socialise with fellow workers: the needs of the customer supercede your private conversation. Also, take more than ten seconds to learn details about your business: as a representative of that business you should know more than the customer.

I've distanced friendships over the way they've treated ANYONE badly in the service industry. My first job (as so many others) was at McDonald's. But one of the good ones way back when when they trained you well, advanced you and gave you raises. It gave me a really good understanding of how customers should be treated, but yet understanding that the customer isn't always right.
This perverse behavior has been on steroids since the pandemic. People, learn to punch up, not down. These folx are barely making a living wage and not one of them made the rules that got your panties in a bunch.

I worked in retail when I was a student, because I desperately needed some money for basic needs. I remember being tired, overworked, unable to prepare properly for exams and I had to deal with rude customers. It probably left me with some scars, because today I step in each time I see a customer being rude or trying to belittle a cashier . Sometimes I get insults and threats from such people, but I also get grateful smiles from the young workers. I like to think that I made someone's day easier.
And call centre staff. Even if you believe a call is a scam, just hang up and report it. If you're dealing with customer service, they are just as much at the mercy of company policy as you are as the customer and the company gives just as little care about you and even less about making the rep's job easier. If it's a legitimate company doing routine cold calls for a survey and you don't like that calmly ask them to put you on their do not call list. Yeah, it takes 3 months to register (not sure why but it does) but it will eventually stop that company from calling. If a telemarketer calls.... do kindly tell them to put you on the do not call list. They're known to put you on the call back list just to get back at you for being an a**e. Js

Hardwork doesn't always lead to success. A lot of people that became successful through "hard work" don't usually include one thing in their success stories: the role of luck. Some of them were lucky to be born in the right place, to the right people, at the right time, happened to go to the right school, happened to make the right friends, etc. For every success story, there are thousands and millions that did the same amount of hardwork and got nowhere. The difference is, those hardworking but unsuccessful people were simply unlucky. No one knows a sure formula for success in life. It's easy to think you do when you've made it.

The latter ties into that; if you are being attacked, the level of force you use in defence should be dependent on the danger you are in, which has almost nothing to do with the sex of your attacker.

Unhealthy weight. I’m not talking about being fit and thin and making people feel bad about their bodies. Im not talking about having a few extra pounds and making people feel bad for that. I have a few extra pounds, I’m not super fit, but I’m relatively healthy. Everyone’s body is different. Healthy means a lot of different things.
I’m talking about normalizing morbidly obese people as beautiful and something to be celebrated. It’s dangerous especially if children see them as someone to look up to. Then they’ll think it’s ok for your body to carry around so much weight that your heart and lungs are working overtime to keep you alive. It will lead to devastating later years in life as you age and your body slows down. You’ll be at risk for cardiovascular issues, you’ll probably die before your time, and the last few years of your life will be bed ridden while you waste away.
While I agree that there is such a thing as unhealthy weight, you still won't see me attacking the "body positivity movement". Because for people to change for the better, the first step has to be letting go of the self-hatred and shame that plagues the seriously overweight and drives them into a self-destructive spiral of self-harming and self-comforting behavior. If the body positivity movement helps anyone let go of the guilt and self-hatred that's poisoned their lives then more good than harm has been done, and it's not like body negativity ever did anyone any good. You can't shame people into being thinner or healthier, that's not how humans work.

Toxic positivity. There’s a huge difference between being optimistic and having raised colored glasses on. We’re all people, and we all experience negative and positive emotions. The only way you can properly get over your emotions is by allowing yourself to feel them. Glossing over your emotions with an aura of “Everything’s fine” isn’t going to solve anything, and it’s just gonna make you feel bad.
Failures in political leadership. I feel more and more we are becoming less critical of failed character in our leaders.
Student loans.
Education is getting more expensive by the day and the added burden on a student in paying back a student loan helps nobody.
Furthermore people encourage student loans as though the students are obligated to take them if they pursue higher studies. Pure nonsense.
Hating police. I've worked places that police don't go. You all don't know how good you have it.
I don't hate police in general, but I've had my arm and nearly my skull broken during the 2001 Genoa protests (unprovoked attack on peaceful protesters) and I was in the Diaz school raid (but luckily wasn't hurt as I was hiding in a closet). Sooo... there's good apples and bad apples... but the bad apples do a lot of damage as they are put in a position of power.
Students overwhelmed by homework when it isn’t necessary. I’m excluding situations like when the workloads from classes are reasonable and happen to pile on one day or students who aren’t organized, etc. This whole thing is a grey area, but sleep, burnout, mental health exists.
A little coordination between teachers could solve this problem. I can remember the times where we had to do an assignment for English and an hour later our French teacher came up with a similar time consuming assignment. When we explained that that meant we had to choose which one we could do, he postponed the assignment for 2 weeks. But other teachers just said "Deal with it." It's education, teacher, we're not operating a multibillion dollar business with deadlines and targets here.
Not caring about education. So many people obviously didn't pay attention in elementary school and don't care about it.
Over here, the government doesn't see education as a "top priority" while I think it's one of THE most important things

Defining your personality by your illnesses/disabilities - both physical and mental. It's wonderful to educate the world and promote acceptance, but when it starts becoming the crutch you lean on to defend toxic behavior, it's a problem. I'm sick of depression and anxiety and chronic illness being treated as a "quirky personality trait" rather than real, life-altering issues. It makes people minimize your experience and think you're just exaggerating because "x tiktok star manages so why can't you?". Idk, man, maybe it's because these kinds of conditions manifest differently in each person, or *le gasp* social media isn't real. As a bonus: giving your two-cents on someone's health when you have no business doing so. I'll listen to my doctors, not your sudden need to plug health fads.

As a bipolar and clinical depression sufferer who was diagnosed about 30 years ago and heavily medicated since, the current 'trend' of people self-diagnosing these conditions drives me nuts. If people had actually experienced any serious mental health condition, believe me, they would go out of their way to NOT have these conditions! In my case, it's been a very long battle involving heaps of medication, psychiatrists, being locked in the loony bin a couple of times etc., that has been extremely difficult at times. More times than I can count, actually. Mental illness is not something to be ashamed of, but it's certainly not something you should wish on yourself. Life is hard enough!

Being mean to substitute teachers. When i walked in my French class the other day I had a sub and it was my two friends in that class who were acting out the most. One was holding his desk above his head, and the other flat out refused to do her work, saying she didn’t do her work anyway and would rather read Warriors (Wings of Fire is better honestly). The kids in front of me were playing video games, and ended up not getting their work done. And really just middle schoolers in general are terrible. There’s this one jerk on the bus who threatens people with his drumsticks, jumps on the seats when the bus is moving, and throws trash out the window. I confronted him about this, and the next day he tried to run me over on his bike. Fortunately though, he went to my neighbors house where they were playing football and he got hit right in crotch. He deserved it.

But, you know, they're pretty, so why not light them off every time someone gets married, has a birthday, graduates, scores a goal, or has too much to drink...
How about shaming those who don't give a s**t about holidays or who have different holidays. I hate Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter. I'm not Christian and have zero family worth spending time with. But I still get s**t for not celebrating and I still lose days of work (and pay) because companies close. But if I want to take time off for Beltane or Samhain (holidays that she very important to me) I'm given s**t for making things up and letting my colleagues down. Seriously?
Defining your personality by your illnesses/disabilities - both physical and mental. It's wonderful to educate the world and promote acceptance, but when it starts becoming the crutch you lean on to defend toxic behavior, it's a problem. I'm sick of depression and anxiety and chronic illness being treated as a "quirky personality trait" rather than real, life-altering issues. It makes people minimize your experience and think you're just exaggerating because "x tiktok star manages so why can't you?". Idk, man, maybe it's because these kinds of conditions manifest differently in each person, or *le gasp* social media isn't real. As a bonus: giving your two-cents on someone's health when you have no business doing so. I'll listen to my doctors, not your sudden need to plug health fads.
Totally agree. As a bipolar and clinical depression sufferer who was diagnosed about 30 years ago and heavily medicated since, the current 'trend' of people self-diagnosing these conditions drives me nuts. If people had actually experienced any serious mental health condition, believe me, they would go out of their way to NOT have these conditions! In my case, it's been a very long battle involving heaps of medication, psychiatrists, being locked in the loony bin a couple of times etc., that has been extremely difficult at times. More times than I can count, actually. Mental illness is not something to be ashamed of, but it's certainly not something you should wish on yourself. Life is hard enough!

Being mean to substitute teachers. When i walked in my French class the other day I had a sub and it was my two friends in that class who were acting out the most. One was holding his desk above his head, and the other flat out refused to do her work, saying she didn’t do her work anyway and would rather read Warriors (Wings of Fire is better honestly). The kids in front of me were playing video games, and ended up not getting their work done. And really just middle schoolers in general are terrible. There’s this one jerk on the bus who threatens people with his drumsticks, jumps on the seats when the bus is moving, and throws trash out the window. I confronted him about this, and the next day he tried to run me over on his bike. Fortunately though, he went to my neighbors house where they were playing football and he got hit right in crotch. He deserved it.
