There’s always something we don’t like. I can’t stand the taste of beetroots, while my best friend is basically allergic to licorice. Food is just one category where people often express their dislikes, but we see the same bursts of loathing anywhere from the animal kingdom to leisure activities. A relative of mine couldn’t stand stepping into a boat, or rather even the thought of it.

But when you stop and think about the things humans address their hate towards, you start wondering about the reasons why. Maybe we’re simply scared of the unknown (yes, tarantulas, we’re speaking of you!) or maybe it’s our past experiences that haunt us to this day.

In any case, today is the perfect time to step back and reflect on these things. Thanks to these two thought-provoking Reddit threads (here and here) where people listed all the things that don’t deserve the hate they get, we have a lot to uncover!

People Name 50 Things That Should Not Be So Universally Hated But Somehow Are Feminism. It doesn’t mean that women are better than men, it means women are *equal* to men. And because I believe everyone should be equal, I am proud to say I am a feminist

When you're accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression.

Yes, I think this is the core issue why (mostly) men are against feminism - not that they don't understand. Even if they gain a lot by equality they must give up privileges that they are used to. Men who are stuck in "what about"-ism land often complain about less parental rights and having to be the "breadwinner" (for example) BUT they don't want to trade that for having to do their share of parental responsibility, housework, emotional load and give up their higher income and status in society for example.

I wish more people understood this about feminism. It has gotten such a bad wrap, but it has never been about dragging men down; it has always been about pulling women up so that they are afforded the same rights and privileges as men. It breaks my heart to know that so many women in this world are still treated as property, with little or no access to education or resources.

Unfortunately, raising women's opportunities up will automatically lower men's opportunities. Or at least remove the privilege and advantages that they've enjoyed for so long. It really is zero sum. The same applies to race equality. If Man A got where he is by (for example) networking only available to men, but now suddenly Woman B is given those same networking options, Man A now has competition - and might not win. It's rather pathetic really, because studies have shown that bettering lives for women advances the entire population, but most antifeminist hate is based less on how much the world can be improved, and sticks strictly to how much MY life will "suffer".

Feminism is gender equity. Feminism enables men. There is no reason men should pay for dates, engagement rings, and absolutely everything that equates masculinity to financial worth. This Is Feminism. And all the Beyonces and Madonnas and Brittanies who want to say "I 'm not a feminist, I'm a Humanist" need to just Google both terms. And, then, possibly, come to terms with what they are. I am proud to be a feminist because you all thought I was beating a dead horse and, suddenly, we have no rights to our own bodies, again. It didn't even last 1 generation.

The problem is the most radical among us are the most vocal online, and a lot of them preach outright hatred towards men, something I absolutely do not support. Those particular individuals want to beat men into the ground, not be equal to them. They are why feminism is viewed as it is.

Yep, unfortunately there is a vocal minority that substitutes the word "feminism" in for "misandry" and when your vocal minority becomes the loudest voice you get the same effects you do for any other group. "All Christians are Bigots, All Vegans are preachy, All feminists are misandrists" when people don't shut down the vocal minority because "at least they're on our side" it ends with needing to work 10 times harder to make your point because people think you agree with them.

Yeah. This one always upsets me. Feminism is still considered something ugly by so many people. Why it's called feminism is because we need to raise women to the same level as men (and also create equity) - not because women should be superior. Feminists don't hate men, they hate the patriarchy and that's a big difference. And I really can't agree with people saying the name being the issue, enough people should know and understand by now what it stands for - but yeah, it it's something you don't want it's easy to "misunderstand" and I think that's more of the case. Also, if we just say "equality for all!" we lose focus on the fact that we are not equal = nothing happens. Last; feminism benefit men too. The patriarchy hurts men too in many ways.

Yes, it does hurt men. In all that brutal jockeying, some are stigmatised as "losers" because human skills and aspects like intellect, sensitivity, kindness, gentleness, integrity, co-operativeness and so on are not valued by the "winners". Physical strength and prowess are over valued. Boys are taught to hide their feelings and repress non-privileged impulses behind a kind of "mask". It creates an emotionally starved human being at the very least.

I've posted this elsewhere but I think it's important. Feminism is about bringing the inequality that women have been subjected to to the notice of the public. It is about not putting up with women getting less pay, fewer rights and generally being treated as weaker, second class citizens. It's about pointing out that a woman can be a doctor as well as nurse if she chooses (remember the story books from the 60s?) It's about not allowing 'tradition' to hobble women. It is not extremist, just searching and stretching for fairness and equality. Any fair minded individual would support that, not be afraid of it.

Hell yeah! Feminism doesn't mean, "We hate guys, guys all suck!" It means, "We hate the patriarchy, men have always been privileged and valued over women, and we recognize women have to face certain setbacks and challenges that men don't, and saying that they hope to improve the situation.

Also, you can't say that you are a feminist if you don't believe in equality and advancement for ALL women. Women of color, LGBTQ+ women, disabled women. J.K Rowling is a great example of white feminists who say they believe in feminism, but put other women down so damn much. Empowered women empower women!

Dare I (I identify as male, cisgender) extend: my reevaluation came about when I realised that women don't need to be equal to men, that's so broad I didn't get it..... When I learned that what women DO should be held to equal esteem, by men, by society, by Women THEMSELVES, I learned a lesson about equality.... If you believe (man or woman) in "traditional" roles (man bread winner, women child raising housewife) that is OK, so long as both are happy, and you see both as equally important roles. It clicked in my mind in an instant

Most people don’t understand feminism is just believing women should have the same rights as a man ! That’s all! It doesn’t mean that you have to worship women or hate men! Do you believe women should have the same rights as a man? Boom you’re a feminist! Do you believe women shouldn’t have the same rights as men? Well then fu(k you I hope you stub you toe when you come up from your moms basement and I hope it swells up and gets infected and the doctors think they may have to remove it. But they send you home and after a few days you start to smell something funny and it’s that toe. Festering from a microscopic cut they didn’t treat ! You go back to the doctor and they have no choice the toe has to go! Hopefully your last thought before you go under for toe removal surgery is “ maybe I am a feminist because I actually do believe women should have the same rights men do”

Since my teen years (fifty years ago!) I have often wondered why women would only want to be equal to men. Of course, I do know what feminism really means, but coming from the dark days of the fifties and sixties, I understand what the "rebellion" was really all about. When I look at the idiocy of what is happening in the US right now, I do wonder whether we have actually traveled any distance at all, in giving women equal rights. I have no problem with feminism at all. Women have the right to govern their own bodies, the state should have no say, would men think it right that they have to leave it to the state to decide whether they should have a prostate exam? Should the state decide if a vasectomy is allowed or not?

Which men do feminists want to be equal with? Powerful, privileged white guys, or, ya know, all the rest? 🤔 As an Asian American man who everyone thinks is Mexican, I can say with a certain degree of confidence that if you were my equal you'd be worse off than you are now. So... There's that.

I agree with feminism and its morals. Most folks agree with it too. The only issue people actually have with it is the name, as without context, "FEM" reminds one of "FEMALE" and it only SOUNDS like it means women over men, not women equal to men. That's why I personally prefer equality or equalist, desiring equal rights for all.

You have not learned what feminism is about. It is raising women AND men. Men should take more parental responsibility for example and be allowed to take half the responsibility for invisible labor - that's raising men where they are not equal. And be allowed to be emotional available and all those old standards of men having control over money in relationships and expect to be "the breadwinner" (those are examples of the patriarchy - what feminism is working to fight against). Feminism is about breaking free from gender norms and expectations for women AND men.

That's because among men there are no equals, since between guys everything is competition. You're either an alpha or a sigmo or whatever. Women wanting equality, to be treated as human beings, is a threat because a man will ever believe he can't - and shouldn't - share his 'rank' with anyone. To a man - at least one who opposes feminism - you're either above him or below him.

People Name 50 Things That Should Not Be So Universally Hated But Somehow Are Homeless people. It doesnt matter how they lost their home, it doesnt matter if they suffer from an addiction, it doesnt matter if they have a job or not. People have unspoken challenges that you dont know about, and they may have never happened to you, and its none of your damn business why theyre homeless. Housing should be considered a human right, and the fact this is still up for debate bothers me. I've seen how small bachelor pads can get, people really dont need much to survive.

Also, people act as if housing being a human right somehow infringes on their ability to buy property, when it doesnt. It just means those that are less fortunate literally just *CANT* be homeless and would be accommodated with the basics for human survival like running water, power, insolated walls and a bed. The fact that housing has been treated as profitable to exploit the lower class, is the reason we have homeless people. Not because of your pre-conceived idea of their life you know nothing about.

People Name 50 Things That Should Not Be So Universally Hated But Somehow Are Opossums. They're neat little critters. They eat tons of ticks that carry Lyme disease, (mostly) don't carry rabies because their body temp is too low, and they're the only marsupial native to North America! They get a bad rap because their first defense is to hiss and bare teeth, but failing that, they just play dead.

If you don't have the predisposition to hate them, you'll find they're pretty cute too.

E: this is about /opossums/, the north American species.

Kiwis, I feel for you, but this comment isn't about your possums.

Wolves they are always the villian of the story but in real life they are scared of humans and they have every right. Just a few weeks ago a lot people killed a lot of wolves because its "wolf season" or something that of sorts. These creatures are very misunderstood and yeah they are big and can kill a human but it won't unless its hunrgy or threated. A long time ago, there was a wolf hunt in europe killing a lot of wolves. They are beautiful creatures, strong, fast, loyal to their pack, and very protective of their pack.

I'm 41. Had my licence before I turned 19. Have not driven once since. I realised early on that I'm extremely sh@@ at it. I can do lots of things but driving is not one of them. It's not about lack of practice. It's about lack of abilities needed for this. I know myself. I know it would be dangerous to me and others for me to drive, so I do the responsible thing and I don't. And I get so much sh@@ for it. Like there's no way I can know myself better than this stranger who met me 5 minutes ago and can absolutely tell that I just need practice because that's how it worked for them.

Let people enjoy things. Music is art, and art is very personal. If you don’t like it, bring headphones. The only time it annoys me is if there’s gospel music in public places. Simply because gospel is very emotional and kind of moody. Like I just wanna sit here and eat my enchiladas and complain to my spouse about work that day. I’m not really in the mood to drop down on my knees in a fervent worship session at Jose Taco.

Worked in community services for a few years on a mandatory program for anyone on welfare to get them back to work. There were only three types of people 1. Want to work, 2. Absolutely unemployable at that moment in time, and 3. Incredibly lazy. There was hardly anyone in the lazy category. Some of the people experiencing homelessness or people addicted to drugs or alcohol wanted so so badly to get jobs but had too many personal challenges to be reliable enough to make it to work. Broke my heart.

Nuclear energy. Of the 3 big nuclear accidents (Chernobyl, Fukushima, Three Mile Island), two of those designs are no longer in use at any plant, and none of the designs have been used to build any new plants in decades. The entire industry has been made far safer as a result of learning from past mistakes and it is now the greenest of energies. But many people are still adamantly anti-nuclear.

Anything that’s popular/mainstream is such because it’s just so amazing and original that everyone just loves it, or because it’s engineered to be a safe rehashed, proven product to maximize the chance of having a broad appeal. The former is rare and timeless. The latter is dime a dozen and you won’t even remember it two years from now. I just wait until everyone I know can’t stop talking about it, then I check it out.
