Now with only a few clicks of a button, we can get everything we need or want. This has led to a serious discussion of what consumerism brings us and how we should change our shopping habits. And this is not the only reason why people sometimes need to think twice before confirming that purchase. Together with this goes untrustworthy brands, low-quality items, and influential hype of purchasing unnecessary things.

Reddit user @u/Badass_Band1t asked people online “What should people seriously stop buying?” and received almost 40k upvotes together with 27.5 comments where other users shared their opinions about things that, for various reasons, should not be purchased in the future.

Most of the answers showed that people are very much concerned about plastic use. A lot of comments suggested that we can all live without buying single-use plastic products when there are so many alternatives that are friendly to the environment. Plastic water bottles and cutlery were among the things that pollute surroundings the most and can be easily replaced with reusable items.

I guess that spreading awareness about MLM (multi-level marketing) scams stuck in people’s minds as these companies and their products were also mentioned by users of Reddit. It was stressed in some of the comments that any kind of unnecessary things that provide you with temporary happiness are not worth buying as they only take up space but usually have no value.

What do you think people should also stop buying? Leave your thoughts in the comments down below!

ADOPT DON'T SHOP. I feel like I have to say this so many times. Look for a pet at your local shelter. Give them a chance. I promise that an adopted pet knows that you saved them. In my experience they are always the sweetest.

This is actually bullshit. MANY dogs at shelters ARE puppy mills dogs. Go to a reputable breeder that tests their dogs for all kind of illnesses before they breed and also take very good care of them. That is were you should put your money, starve out those puppy mills so they arent profitable anymore.

I went to the local dog shelter looking for a dog, they had one that they called aggressive and uncontrollable. He came and sat by me looking at me without a sound. The staff were shocked, so I adopted him. Not 100% sure how old he was when I adopted him but I had him for over a decade. Rescue dog just need a loving home. Some of them are wonderful animals that just need to find the right person.

That's a lovely story, but it's important to note that this is not the norm. A lot of shelter dogs are adopted by people who like how they look and disregard warnings from staff about their difficulties (and a lot of rescues are traumatised and DO have issues). Those dogs often end up back at the shelter when the new owners just can't deal with them.

When I was a kid we bought the family dog from the pet store. We didn't know any better at the time, but we soon learned. Poor thing was afraid of men, boots, brooms, rakes, vacuum cleaners, and that's just what I remember. I can only imagine what he must've gone through as a pup.

Vacuums tend to have a specific level of sound that is physically painful to them. The rest sound like the "owner" put a litter of pups in a garage until old enough to sell and each time they went in they grabbed the nearest long handled tool to swat them out of the way (because they're so happy to see them (read: hungry) they swarm). You see this a lot in animal rescue work. 🥺😿

We live on a dead end street—-prime dumping ground for unwanted animals. Many do get picked up and go to the animal shelter—-thankfully the county shelter is no-kill, and there are a lot of groups that trap stray cats, get them fixed, and return the truly feral ones to their colony or get the ones who were obviously dumped pets, or have more docile personalities, adopted. Right now, we have 4 cats and 1 dog—-every single one rescued off the street—-3 of the cats dumped in our yard, all by themselves, as small kittens (one was especially tiny; 5-6 weeks old and barely weighing 1 lb! What kind of monster dumps a tiny baby like that all by herself in a strange place?).

If you are contacting somebody who is offering an animal for sale and that person tells you that they need to meet you at McDonald’s because their place is very hard to find, that’s a big red flag that you’re dealing with backyard breeders - puppy mill breeders, because they don’t want you on the property seeing how horrible the conditions are!!

We picked up a puppy mill puppy at a rescue. All of my animals are ones I picked up off the street or found at a shelter except for one. Had a yorkie that I loved more than anything, when he died we recused another dog but 2 years later I was still in a deep depression over my yorkie, I loved him more than anything. I ended up buying a yorkie from a local breeder. I love all my animals, but I think ever since rescuing my first yorkie I can never go back to not having one. Not that I would ever get one from a puppy mill. If you do buy, make sure you check out the breeder.

Most pet shop puppies com from mills, as do online adds. People want a guaranteed cute look. But if you want a 8-18 year commitment from a dog, trust me you want a personality, not a specific look. Shelters want the dogs to be a lifelong success so they can help you find a good match. Dogs are like relationship matches. You think you want a perfect look until you realize it’s high maintenance or prone to illness or great to look at but an a**e hole.

This applies to kittens from kitten mills to! Puppies & kittens from fidget breeders come with tons of health problems! I think getting a mixed breed is better. ⭐️My cat’s daddy was siamese and it made him an adorable lynx point. Plus it toned down some of the annoying siamese traits. He is a foster fail bottle baby I raised. 😻 Purebred equals inbred!

Every pet I've ever had (including pets my parents had when I was a child) were adopted, or simply showed up, each and everyone of them then lived their entire life with me or my family.(just for reference we didn't have a house filled with animals as a child we had 2 dogs and a cat. At one time I had 5 cats a lot I know but I was a young adult then each of them lived their lives happily with me until they passed, now down to 2 cats. 2 is my limit from now on.) The only time I paid for a cat was my first cat as an adult, but that was the adoption fee from the humane society that I adopted her from.

I 100000000% agree with this. People are like "Oh, I saved this puppy from a pupppy mill! I'm so generous!" Well guess what? The more you buy from their the more money they get! Maybe DON'T buy from there and let them go out of buisness!

I love near Lancaster Pennsylvania, which should be renamed PUPPY MILL Pa. I don't understand why the government doesn't do more to shut these mills down. There is literally a puppy mill around every corner. I assume some of the problem comes with Amish farms being there too. And how does the government figure out a working farm versus a puppy mill? But there has to be a way. It should be much harder to get a puppy this way but at least here in Pa, they flood the market.

I disagree a million percent. Saving an animal is #1 importance and not buying from a puppy mill isn't going to stop the practice. The onus should be on people --reporting to authorities to shut down. Humans need to step it up. It's not the puppies' fault ! How about being diligent about reporting these places.... putting a media spotlight on them. Don't leave the puppies in hell... to prove what point ? Puppy mills don't shut down because they 'lose sales.'

Supply and demand. If people stop demanding that puppies be bred, the suppliers won't breed them anymore. They are doing it for profit and if they aren't getting a profit they will stop.

Adoption prices often cover the shots/vaccines, vet care, spay/neuter, food, and general care of the dog while at the shelter. Yes, it can be expensive but you are supporting a good organization rather than a money-hungry breeder who doesn't care about the dogs.

Just buy a water filter and fill up the same bottle

Edit: for people saying just drink tap water, I agree 100%. I’m just saying there are a lot of people who only buy bottled water, drink it, throw it and buy another one. Ridiculously unnecessary. Those plastics are so difficult to recycle, if at all. Most just ends up in landfill anyway.
