Now with only a few clicks of a button, we can get everything we need or want. This has led to a serious discussion of what consumerism brings us and how we should change our shopping habits. And this is not the only reason why people sometimes need to think twice before confirming that purchase. Together with this goes untrustworthy brands, low-quality items, and influential hype of purchasing unnecessary things.

Reddit user @u/Badass_Band1t asked people online “What should people seriously stop buying?” and received almost 40k upvotes together with 27.5 comments where other users shared their opinions about things that, for various reasons, should not be purchased in the future.

Most of the answers showed that people are very much concerned about plastic use. A lot of comments suggested that we can all live without buying single-use plastic products when there are so many alternatives that are friendly to the environment. Plastic water bottles and cutlery were among the things that pollute surroundings the most and can be easily replaced with reusable items.

I guess that spreading awareness about MLM (multi-level marketing) scams stuck in people’s minds as these companies and their products were also mentioned by users of Reddit. It was stressed in some of the comments that any kind of unnecessary things that provide you with temporary happiness are not worth buying as they only take up space but usually have no value.

What do you think people should also stop buying? Leave your thoughts in the comments down below!

ADOPT DON'T SHOP. I feel like I have to say this so many times. Look for a pet at your local shelter. Give them a chance. I promise that an adopted pet knows that you saved them. In my experience they are always the sweetest.

I've finally managed to kick them after 30+ years with the help of a vape. I know it's not a perfect solution, but it's the closest I've come. Hope to transition off of it eventually. Friend of mine just put his down after three years of vaping, coming off 40 years of smoking. You do need to spend a decent amount and get a good one though, the first couple I tried were useless.

This! As an ex smoker who has fallen back to the habit many times, I publicly tell that smoking is simply pointless. You pay to smoke your body sick, and the dependancy will always be haunting you. Just don't touch a cigarrette. It's not worth anything.

Its so hard. It took me a long time to quit. The hardest was the ritual. I didn't know how to just...do my day without it. Like going to bed felt weird without having a last cigarette. I did it by weaning off them slowly. I allowed myself, say, 8 cigarettes a day. Whatever, and whenever I wanted them but only 8. I'd set them out on the kitchen counter so i could see them dwindling. After a couple weeks, I went down to 7. A couple weeks later, 6. Eventually I was down to just one, and at that point I didn't bother because what was one cigarette going to really do for me. It was hard - and there was backsliding ("Ugh I just had a rough day, I'll go have one whatever" "Oh everyone at work is going out for a smoke.." ) And eventually I just let it go. It was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do in my life. Keep trying. I never thought I'd be off them, I couldn't even remember what life was like without them. You can do it, and we ex smokers ALL believe in you.

Aversion therapy worked for me. It retrains the brain into associating smoking with something unpleasant. Otherwise, you can kick the physical addiction, but the brain still has pleasant memories associated with lighting up. I've been free from nicotine addiction since 1987.

I'm sure this person only means well, but they sound a bit naive. I've watched people go from social smokers to smoking alone in the car, to smoking here, there, then everywhere. You can only do so much as a friend sometimes when it's an addiction.

I quit many times, for years at a time and most recently when i found out i was pregnant late 2018. I ended up sneaking a few when my son was very little (never in front of him. Ever). And then stopped for a year or so. And here we are again, secret smoking at least a couple of times a week. The addiction has tricked my brain into thinking i actually enjoy it when its disgusting. All i can say is my advice to everyone who may be curious about smoking - just don't do it. It's not cool anymore and it is really hard to kick for good for some people.

It's definitely a bad addiction bc even 20 yrs later I get the urge to have one once in a while. I'm not addicted to alcohol and I quit that all together about 3 yrs ago thats when I would get the urge to smoke most if I had a few cocktails w friends

I used a technique that works without all the withdrawals. Where ever you go to take a smoke break, only take only 1/2 a cig. When you go to work, take one cigarrette out of the pack. When you park at work, leave the pack of cigs in the car and only take enough cigs for your break. Repeat this process every day. What you're doing, is training your mind everyday, and making it dificult to access your cigarrettes. The longer you repeat this, your mind and craving will adjust. By the time you're down to only taking a few cigarrettes out of your pack, the easier it is for your cravings.

Hah, not gonna happen. I've got a lot of mental health issues, sometimes for me it is a choice - smoking cigarette or bursting into crying/hysteria. I won't be taking more pills for that, because my liver is already working high time with my everyday medication. Also, in Poland, for example Xanax is extremely expensive, other calming drugs can get you addicted, soooo, yup gonna probably smoke till I die :)

Just buy a water filter and fill up the same bottle

Edit: for people saying just drink tap water, I agree 100%. I’m just saying there are a lot of people who only buy bottled water, drink it, throw it and buy another one. Ridiculously unnecessary. Those plastics are so difficult to recycle, if at all. Most just ends up in landfill anyway.

Trying to convince them to buy a water filter is good middle ground!
