Now with only a few clicks of a button, we can get everything we need or want. This has led to a serious discussion of what consumerism brings us and how we should change our shopping habits. And this is not the only reason why people sometimes need to think twice before confirming that purchase. Together with this goes untrustworthy brands, low-quality items, and influential hype of purchasing unnecessary things.

Reddit user @u/Badass_Band1t asked people online “What should people seriously stop buying?” and received almost 40k upvotes together with 27.5 comments where other users shared their opinions about things that, for various reasons, should not be purchased in the future.

Most of the answers showed that people are very much concerned about plastic use. A lot of comments suggested that we can all live without buying single-use plastic products when there are so many alternatives that are friendly to the environment. Plastic water bottles and cutlery were among the things that pollute surroundings the most and can be easily replaced with reusable items.

I guess that spreading awareness about MLM (multi-level marketing) scams stuck in people’s minds as these companies and their products were also mentioned by users of Reddit. It was stressed in some of the comments that any kind of unnecessary things that provide you with temporary happiness are not worth buying as they only take up space but usually have no value.

What do you think people should also stop buying? Leave your thoughts in the comments down below!

ADOPT DON'T SHOP. I feel like I have to say this so many times. Look for a pet at your local shelter. Give them a chance. I promise that an adopted pet knows that you saved them. In my experience they are always the sweetest.

Who pays the authors then? Academic book authors will make a shockingly low amount from a book. Anything low volume is expensive. Someone also needs to pay the book printer.

The schools demand that you purchase the newest edition for full price, and not one letter has changed from the old edition. Books are hundreds of dollars and you can bring them back for re-sale and they offer you $3. Authors and publishers should be paid for their work but this is a money grab and shouldn't be tolerated. Just taking advantage of students that have no alternative but to have the basic materials they need to complete a class.

What is most pertinent about university textbooks is that the authors and editors rarely see a cent of that $220 price.

There are websites that have the books for free, such as Bookboon and OpenStax. Some authors would happily sell you a copy from their own stock for a massively reduced price as the rest of the costs go to everyone else

So the authors (aka professors writing for a very small, selective audience) shouldn't be paid for years of work? I hated buying certain books, but I still have all my books that pertained to my degree and I still read them. A few that I read so much that the pages started to fall out. Writing all over all the pages. For a lot of my classes, I would have 20+ books but they would cost me about $300 in total, but for science and math it would be one book that would be around $70-$180 depending on if I could rent it or get it used. You are not just paying the cost of the materials of the book, you are also paying for the time and research the author spent to develop it, the author typically being a person with a doctorate. College is super expensive but shouldn't be targeting text books written by working professionals to lower the cost. Who is going to compensate the author for their time and work?

I agree they are overpriced and too many new additions, but why would anyone write them if they weren't getting paid? The problem is, and always has been, the professors selecting the text.

My last 2 years at school I paid less than $500 for all my books bc I torrented most of them or bought the international version. Its the same book just in paperback and black and white. I actually had a professor try and debate me in front of the class about the legitimacy of my book. I encouraged him to find any actual differences in the material. He couldnt. The international version actually had more information with regards to the lab procedures that made it easier to understand.

I wouldn't mind paying for textbooks if they are not releasing a new edition every few years. This makes it difficult to borrow them from the library or buy used ones because you don't know what has or has not been updated.

get eleven people together in a class. Ten of them chip in 10% each. Number 11 makes a pdf copy of the book on a scanner and gives out 10 digital copies. He keeps one for himself for easy searches. They all recover their costs the next semester when they sell their memory stick pdf copies. Yes, very illegal, the guy doing the scanning will get sued sued sued and lose if caught... but this beats the system..

Currently more than 40% of the people in the world still have no access to Internet. Text books should only cost as much as printing plus 10% for the manufacturer. A 500 page textbook that will be out of date in a year should cost about $12.50, not $1250.

The cost of a printed item is largely dependent on the quantity. Books, especially textbooks that typically require color printing, are very expensive to print in small quantities. Maybe there are ways to reduce or subsidize that cost. If everyone could use a PDF instead, that might be a good option. But the people who research, write, illustrate, and edit textbooks need to get paid.

Just buy a water filter and fill up the same bottle

Edit: for people saying just drink tap water, I agree 100%. I’m just saying there are a lot of people who only buy bottled water, drink it, throw it and buy another one. Ridiculously unnecessary. Those plastics are so difficult to recycle, if at all. Most just ends up in landfill anyway.
