Now with only a few clicks of a button, we can get everything we need or want. This has led to a serious discussion of what consumerism brings us and how we should change our shopping habits. And this is not the only reason why people sometimes need to think twice before confirming that purchase. Together with this goes untrustworthy brands, low-quality items, and influential hype of purchasing unnecessary things.

Reddit user @u/Badass_Band1t asked people online “What should people seriously stop buying?” and received almost 40k upvotes together with 27.5 comments where other users shared their opinions about things that, for various reasons, should not be purchased in the future.

Most of the answers showed that people are very much concerned about plastic use. A lot of comments suggested that we can all live without buying single-use plastic products when there are so many alternatives that are friendly to the environment. Plastic water bottles and cutlery were among the things that pollute surroundings the most and can be easily replaced with reusable items.

I guess that spreading awareness about MLM (multi-level marketing) scams stuck in people’s minds as these companies and their products were also mentioned by users of Reddit. It was stressed in some of the comments that any kind of unnecessary things that provide you with temporary happiness are not worth buying as they only take up space but usually have no value.

What do you think people should also stop buying? Leave your thoughts in the comments down below!

I kind of like the idea of donating my body to science—- like the Body Farm at the University of Tennessee. I don’t understand why coffins have to be sealed. You just end up with a load of goo staining the satin upholstery. Whereas decomposition into the ground means your atoms end up recycled into other things—-the truest form of reincarnation.

You can go turn yourself into a thing to grow as a tree. Or donate yourself to science. That can reduce, or totally eliminate, a cremation fee. You can then be buried or scatter or whatever, and you save space wherever you end up.

Funerals are for the living. The dead don't need expensive casket (or) a catering service, but if it makes a person feel better having their loved one buried in a beautiful box, and they can afford it, I don't see a big problem. Edit: OR a catering service. Are makes no sense..

They're sealed because the living want them preserved while the dead don't care. Also because as they decompose there is a smell, especially with embalming fluids because we want to 'preserve their legacy' while actually doing them zero justice. We play dress up with corpses and say we're honoring them. It's gross.

That’s the way Jewish burial is- wrapped with cloth, in the ground.Funerals are held as soon as possible- same day or next, as keeping the body is unhygienic ( these are laws since ancient times, which helped prevent the spread of disease).

Green Burial is now a thing in some states....no chemicals or formaldehyde, the family gets to decide how involved they want to be in the burial process--preparing the body if they wish (the way it used to be), biodegradable wicker casket (or linen sheath), the body is placed in the ground and returned to the earth--no marker or stone, but simply decays. The informational meeting I went to even said that most of the soft tissues decay in under 6 weeks. Fascinating, practical, far less expensive process. Also a LOT more environmentally friendly than traditional cremation (which uses a LOT of energy to burn the body).

Unfortunately, not allowed in Germany. You HAVE to use an urn or a casket and you HAVE to be buried somewhere "official". A cemetery, a cemetery forest or you can choose to be put in the ocean (did I forget something?).You even have no possibility to get the ashes of a lost one. It goes from the crematory directly to the funeral director. Worst rip off ever, it all costs a fortune.

The industry has made it really hard to get away with no casket, says it is for sanitary reasons but really no longer necessary since we know how to safely bury people. However, there are still a lot of regulations in place that make the casket compulsory for burial.

Just buy a water filter and fill up the same bottle

Edit: for people saying just drink tap water, I agree 100%. I’m just saying there are a lot of people who only buy bottled water, drink it, throw it and buy another one. Ridiculously unnecessary. Those plastics are so difficult to recycle, if at all. Most just ends up in landfill anyway.

Trying to convince them to buy a water filter is good middle ground!

30 Items We All Should Quit Buying, As Pointed Out By People In This Online Group I can't understand the people that buy holiday decor every single year. Are people buying fake trees and tossing them every year and needing a new one? Same with ornaments and what not. Obviously people move out of their parents or they need to replace ornaments if they're broken or something but the amount in stores does not add up to me. Why so much new stuff every year?

No need to buy new ornaments every year. I still use ornaments from 1960s that belonged to my grandparents.
