Now with only a few clicks of a button, we can get everything we need or want. This has led to a serious discussion of what consumerism brings us and how we should change our shopping habits. And this is not the only reason why people sometimes need to think twice before confirming that purchase. Together with this goes untrustworthy brands, low-quality items, and influential hype of purchasing unnecessary things.

Reddit user @u/Badass_Band1t asked people online “What should people seriously stop buying?” and received almost 40k upvotes together with 27.5 comments where other users shared their opinions about things that, for various reasons, should not be purchased in the future.

Most of the answers showed that people are very much concerned about plastic use. A lot of comments suggested that we can all live without buying single-use plastic products when there are so many alternatives that are friendly to the environment. Plastic water bottles and cutlery were among the things that pollute surroundings the most and can be easily replaced with reusable items.

I guess that spreading awareness about MLM (multi-level marketing) scams stuck in people’s minds as these companies and their products were also mentioned by users of Reddit. It was stressed in some of the comments that any kind of unnecessary things that provide you with temporary happiness are not worth buying as they only take up space but usually have no value.

What do you think people should also stop buying? Leave your thoughts in the comments down below!

ADOPT DON'T SHOP. I feel like I have to say this so many times. Look for a pet at your local shelter. Give them a chance. I promise that an adopted pet knows that you saved them. In my experience they are always the sweetest.

I've had my phone for the past 3 years and it's a gem. It's not even high end, it's a based model ASUS and it does everything I need it to. It fell numerous times and haven't broken!

Same with my Samsung Galaxy A5. It's fell on all types of hard surfaces and keeps on working. Just a few tiny nicks on the sides but screen is intact. The screen protector was about as useful as a Motorola case.

Continue to implement and enforce laws against companies practicing planned obsolescence. Not saying consumers aren't part of the problem but they are getting pushed.

I had a flip phone for 7 years, when it finally died I just went without a phone for 3 years, then after endless begging from my husband, I finally broke down and bought a new phone. But since I hate phones and this was a spite purchase, I picked out the most expensive one available at the time and basically have a $800 alarm clock that I sometimes use to text my husband that I am indeed alive.

I think in the past 15 years since I got my first cellphone, I’ve only upgraded 4 times. Basically every 3-4 years. I can’t see spending money to replace something every year when it’s still working just fine. Besides, any upgrades the new models have are mostly pretty subtle, so it’s not like you’re really getting that much more. Just bragging rights—-and expensive ones.

There is a planned obsolescence aspect to this. As you know, a rechargeable battery only lasts for so many cycles and will eventually die. When this happened in the past, we could just buy a new battery and pop it in, just like new. These days, most phones are sealed units and you can't access the battery so when that goes, the phone goes, unfortunately. It's an obvious and cynical move by the manufacturers.

Yeah, buy a good one, protect it, and it can last years. In my experience, avoid some brands (price/performances is not worth it, samsung/oppo comparison for example). If you don't really know about performance, ask someone who knows about computers. My oppo was 200€ with really good performances (battery, cpu, ram, memory). Pretty sure I can keep it 2 more years easy peasy

I hate that Apple phases out their older models by making them not compatible with the new iOS. My 4S was perfectly functional but I couldn't update my apps because iOS was too old. I could only call or text in the end so I have to get a new phone to use the other smartphone functions...

This is the reason I won't use a carrier that subsidizes phones. They're building the cost of replacing your phone every 2 years into the cost of the plan. It incentivizes waste, and if I don't take advantage of the replacement, I'm overpaying. I'd rather buy my phone and keep it as long as I want.

30 Items We All Should Quit Buying, As Pointed Out By People In This Online Group Plastic bottles.

Just buy a water filter and fill up the same bottle

Edit: for people saying just drink tap water, I agree 100%. I’m just saying there are a lot of people who only buy bottled water, drink it, throw it and buy another one. Ridiculously unnecessary. Those plastics are so difficult to recycle, if at all. Most just ends up in landfill anyway.

Trying to convince them to buy a water filter is good middle ground!
