Let’s face it—some people have no idea what our jobs are all about. Sometimes, we might enjoy explaining the basics with a few polite sentences but when they ask the same questions over and over again, it can start to feel slightly annoying. Luckily, there are plenty of people on the internet ready to enlighten the masses about the realities of what they do for a living.

One Reddit user posed a question on the r/AskReddit forum, "What is something that people in your profession understand, but the general public can’t seem to grasp?" From lifeguards to teachers, hundreds of people rushed to share insider knowledge and debunk the myths surrounding their jobs.

Take a look at some of the illuminating observations commenters revealed in this thread and make sure to upvote the ones that you might not have known about. And if you can relate to any of them, don’t be shy and share your insights in the comments below!

Yep. Materials cost for an A3 painting is in the region of $50 for materials alone, never mind time. So your minimum cost for a painting is going to be, at minimum wage, about $100.

We managed to get in touch with one of the Redditors who had enough of people misunderstanding their profession. User Substantially-Ranged left an illuminating comment under this thread, explaining the common misconceptions they face as a teacher.

"Teaching children takes more than subject knowledge," they wrote. "Many people think that their experience as a student qualifies them to be teachers. It's called the apprenticeship of observation. There are strategies for both classroom management and teaching that you don't learn from being a student."

Substantially-Ranged was kind enough to have a little chat and share some thoughts about the topic. They started by mentioning that, sadly, teachers in the US feel unappreciated.

People Share 40 Things The General Public Doesn’t Understand About Their Profession In most places, we don't set the prices for anything. Your surgeon is not making $50,000 on your grandma's hip because the hospital charged that much. He or she is probably getting $1,500, and the institution gets the rest. Insurances and institutions are the problem.

will0593 , Павел Сорокин Report

"When classes went online due to COVID-19, the public attacked teachers as being lazy and suggested that they should be paid less because they were not actually in the classroom," they told Bored Panda. "It starts to feel like your education, your commitment, and your effort aren't appreciated."

The user believes that the general public does not value and respect "the amount of education and experience it takes to be a skilled teacher." One of the reasons behind this could be that "the apprenticeship of observation makes people think that because they've seen teachers, that they can teach."

The thing with this is, you ALWAYS notice the naughty kids, running amok in the restaurant. I would hazard a guess that because the other kids are well-behaved you NEVER notice them. It's always a minority spoiling it for the majority. Note: You can apply this to adults too.

Military spending.

The U.S. spends the most by far, but it doesn't mean that money goes towards making sure Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors, and Marines have the best training, facilities, education, and equipment.

The vast majority of that money goes to private companies for programs that never produce anything or contribute in any way to the effectiveness of the fighting forces.

There is no concrete evidence that the U.S. has "The Best" military in the world.

A lot of "tough" parenting stances don't work.

I work with teenagers who have committed minor offenses and are not required to do jail time, but seeing a youth worker and working on anger management/social skills/life skills is required of them. There is not one single teen that has been sent to me who has come from a background of "gentle parenting". Not one. Every singe one of them without fail as long as I have been doing this will tell stories of all the times they were hit as punishment, and it becomes their logic when faced with conflict, "He disrespected me so I bashed his face in", "He called me a wanker so a smashed his car with my baseball bat", "I didn't do anything wrong, he stole the girl I like so I kicked him and his knee just broke, it's not really my fault".

This whole "Back in my day we got hit and we grew up right!" is just silly. Back in "your day" hitting was more prevalent so it's safe to say that most, if not all, violent crimes were committed by those who were hit. Most of the more shocking serial killers and so on have very well documented back stories of abuse.

Not every child who is hit will resort to physical violence when things don't go their way, of course, but children who are taught proper coping mechanisms for anger other than hitting people or things are very less likely to resort to that themselves, because they've been given conflict resolution skills that they can carry on into young adulthood.

And yeah, here's the point that a lot do understand in regards to this- if you are saying that you were hit and you grew up okay and you are using that to defend physical violence against children who most of the time actually don't know any better (and it's even worse when it's "Oh well they're too young to understand why they shouldn't touch the stove, so I hit them so they understand"- if they can't understand why they can't touch the stove they won't understand why you hit them either), you didn't grow up okay, you grew up with violent tendencies.

General rule, don't hit people.
If you hit children, they will learn to hit.
When children grow up and hit other grown ups, that's a criminal offense and they will go to jail.

It can be quite hard to figure out why the public has so many misconceptions about other professions. Whether it’s seeing librarians as babysitters or assuming that the IT guys can do it all, there seems to be a general lack of common sense when it comes to appreciating what others do for a living. "It can be difficult to have empathy for others and realize that they have to work hard," Substantially-Ranged added.

The user continued by saying that it’s necessary to talk about such issues. "The beauty of Reddit is that it creates an environment where positive and open discourse can occur. A simple subreddit like r/AskReddit has the power to educate people and enlighten them about things just by scrolling," they concluded.

Well this goes for healthcare as a whole. I don't think it's the fact people have to pay that is the problem, it's the ammount of money that needs to be payed that is the issue. Sometimes a vet just looks at my cat, gives a short diagnose 'give it some rest' and I walk out fo the door with a € 80,- Bill. I know they deserve a good salary (studied long, have a big responsibility), but this I find ridiculous. I take care of kids in my profession, a big responsibility, but the pay is lousy. Just to compare.

But, if a person had a medical emergency, accomodations would be made. I think that's all we're asking. I'll gladly pay monthly payments for the rest of my life to help my boy, it's unreasonable to think I'll have thousands I can plunk down all at once. About a year ago my cat began to really struggle to breath. I was in between jobs at the time, as I worked for an agency that placed me regularly but sometimes there would be a gap where I'd be out of work for a short time until paper work was completed then I'd be back in a place and get backpay for what I'd missed. So at this point I was very tight for ready cash. I took the cat to the vet. The vet took one 3 second glance at my struggling pet and told me, "Unless you pay X amount right now, all I can offer you is euthanization" I begged the woman to please let me pay a deposit now and I would pay the rest next week. No good. This is a RURAL vet, I KNOW for a fact that she has payment plans available for the MANY farmers that live around me, but she would rather KILL my pet than offer any form of compromise to someone with a clearly suffering animal. I took my cat to a charity vet who diagnosed him with aggressive asthma, gave him a steroid injection and saved his life.

I can't imagine people approach vets like this! I just don't understand one needs a license for almost everything, except for owning a pet. If you can't afford healthcare, proper food and the right environment, people shouldn't "own" a pet. A vet is a primary need. And basic animal care should be taught in school. Some people don't seem to understand, animals are not accessoiries

Why don't people understand that pets are expensive. They're not toys, but living, feeling, creatures. If you can't afford to give your pets the best money can buy, then you should focus on other things until you can. Not everyday is fantasy playtime.

Vet of 25 years here. We are NOT overcharging you. People who ask for "payment plans" usually don't keep up the payments. Anything other than payment at the time of service leads to many unpaid bills, which makes us have to raise fees for everyone so that those who pay on time get penalized. You can have cheap medicine or good medicine, but not both. Our overhead is very high. Licensing, employees, the building, lots of insurance, and most have 100,000 plus debt from school to the tune of a payment the size of a mortgage for 10 plus years. Work weeks are typically 55 to 60 hrs at least. Our average salary after 8 plus years of education and all of that debt we have to pay off is 100,000 a year. We feel terrible when we have to euthanize your pet! But we have financial obligations just like you do. My suggestion is to create a budget with a special account for your pet that you contribute to each month. I suggest 75.00 a month for a cat and 75 to 175.00 a month for a dog.

Former veterinary practice manager here. The costs of keeping a clinic open to be there for your pets is huge. Salaries, rent/mortgage, insurance, expensive equipment rental or purchase, drugs, food, supplies, continuing education to maintain licenses, taxes... If people don't pay, those expenses don't get paid, that clinic is gone.

Consider pet insurance from companies like Nationwide, Trupanion and ASPCA. Insurance is commonly used in the UK. It's reasonably priced and has good coverage. Slinkman, you were charged an office and exam fee for a set amount of time. Your bill was more than reasonable for an office visit. Vets are keeping up their end of the bargain, and are heavily underpaid compared to our counterparts in human medicine. If you didn't have health insurance you would not be able to afford a doctor either.

I work in the veterinary industry. The sad assumption is that ALL veterinarians make TONS of money. This is not true. We have insurance that covers a lot of what we do not see (for people). If you really cared about your "furry family member" get pet insurance. The other option is to raise hell as to why these 'beings' that we feed, house, and love are still considered PROPERTY like your car. You can't pay to get your car fixed, the mechanic WILL NOT fix your car. It's that simple. The amount of energy it takes ton save something without a voice is hard enough. There are government programs for people that keep having babies and can't feed them. If you can't afford the many possible outcomes of a pet, do not have one. Let alone dealing with all of the people that FINANCE a living thing or that drop $2,000 dollars on a pet and then realize it costs money to take care of them...geez the people are the problem. Shut down the puppy mills. Make people take classes before getting a pet.

Sometimes I feel like pet insurance should be mandatory. Then again... the average American can't afford a $300 emergency. If this sounds like you, maybe don't acquire something that will, with absolute certainty, incur more costs down the road. Providing an animal with a sub-par life, complete with crappy food and no ability to cover basic medical care isn't doing anyone any favors!

Things that sadly make vet care cost more is when they take labs, those samples are sent out to a separate company to process and they charge a lot because they have to support their facility and staff as well. So that money that is on your vet bill is going for them to pay for the labs to be processed. Also x-rays still apparently need to be checked out by a radiologist just like for people. So another charge that seems ridiculous, but they are having to pay an outside business so that is reflected on your fee.

To add: There is no such thing as a "free" pet. Just because you found them as a stray or they were gifted to you doesn't mean you won't need to pay anything to care for it. Even Basic supplies cost money and they can be expensive. We, as veterinary professionals don't do this for the money, we do it because we CARE about your pets. Most people in this field end up having to work multiple jobs just to survive. Yes pets are expensive, if you can't afford to care for them you should reconsider having one. Also, many hospitals now are owned by corporate companies so guess what? We have no say in the prices that are being charged, we are just trying to do our jobs and while the prices you see may be a lot, it is not directly related to how much we make....

The worst ones are the "animal lovers" that rescue random animals and then expect the vet to give them attention for free because they did something good! Come on! YOU chose to pick the animal up, if you didn't want to pay a vet for a checkup then don't pick it up in the first place! You don't earn free attention for being a good person! And these people just feel entitled to it, which is the most infuriating part. My dad is a vet and he often cuts down the prices if the person clearly is tight on money or is an old person, but if you ask him to leave his f*****g work for cheaper just because you don't want to spend that much on your pet, THEN DON'T HAVE ONE, don't have 20+ dogs all crammed up in your house if you don't have space for them! You are not doing them a favor if you don't invest in their wellbeing! You are just trying to make yourself feel a better person, and the vet has no motive to reward you for that, you took that responsibility yourself

You're paying for the veterinarian's time, education, and expertise. They have astronomical debts for their licenses, and they don't earn half what you think they do. I'm a veterinary technician, and you couldn't bribe me to do my boss's job - they put up with some of the most disgusting conditions and almost daily verbal abuse from clients ("if you CARED you'd do it for free!" And yet last time I went to a vet because my cat was gaging every time she tried to drink, I'm given some BS excuse pulled out of their ass and told to keep an eye on her. I HAVE BEEN ITS WHY IM HERE!. I had to actually ask them to see if she's dehydrated, she was. They gave her two syringes of water and charged me 300$...let's just say you ALL don't necessarily DESERVE a living wage, at least not with that kind of service

My veterinary asked if I wanted her to feel my cat's stomach. I just thought it was a casual question but she billed me 600 KR for it, that's 60 euros and about 50 dollars 😅 I paid it off course but man.. 600 for something that took 4 or 5 seconds? Isn't it better to pay for the time an exam takes instead of what the exam consists of? If I would have thought about it for 8 seconds she would have lost big money on it.

Usually, the vet gives options of what needs to happen to determine a diagnosis. If a person can't afford it, the vet can give them low income options. If that is not an option, and the pet is suffering, euthanasia is the kindest way, Surrender, or 'wait to see what happens' (which is awful).

Where I live, we only had one vet clinic for the entire region, and the nearest other option was over 1000km away. Literally. It was an 18-hour drive. This guy fought the government like hell to prevent anyone else from being allowed to break up his monopoly, and succeeded in that for about 30 years. And he was still overcharging by 300% the whole time. But please, tell me more about how this a*****e was struggling to pay his bills.

The sad part is, there is no such thing as pet insurance, but there is people insurance. Had an experience very recently where we thought we were gonna have to shoot our dog to end his suffering, but after 5 days of vomiting without eating or drinking anything, he found a "will to live" somewhere. Called around vet clinics to see if they accepted payments, because even in human healthcare, you can make monthly payments if you can't afford a one time payment of $1,000 for that ER visit due to an asthma attack for which you had no rescue inhaler. Vets don't do payment plans. But there is something called CareCredit if you can figure out how to get through the "red tape". CareCredit requires the diagnosis before approving your credit, but you must apply before being billed. Credit isn't guaranteed, so good luck.

I do not know where you live but there is pet insurance in the US. The problem is that you must get it prior to any severe illness of your pet. You have deductibles lime human insurance and will get reimbursed depending on type of policy and what it covers. Many human insurance companies now offer insurance for your pets which is AMAZING since 20 years ago, it was almost unheard of. Until we can no longer view pets as property, we will continue to struggle with this issue.

Yes but I'm old enough to remember when vet's used to charge sensible prices for their services not the thousands expected to be paid now for those same services. The costs have gone up 100s of times faster than inflation etc. There is real greed and callousness dialling the system now.

Inflation sucks!! The cost of gas has gone up, oh...and a carton of eggs!!! Supplies have gone up tremendously since COVID. Vets can't get the supplies because it's going to human medicine. The cost of gloves, masks, syringes, and medications has sky rocketed.

As a teacher, No! Your "babies" are not babies. They are delinquent teens with sociopathic behaviors that you allowed to go unchecked, and now we have to deal with it when they disrupt learning environments and harm others, while you throw a fit when we call home about it, even though we have video evidence of them brutally hitting others, including staff, and behaving like out of control animals. But your little "baby" would "never do that."

Not very exotic, but we(my wife) just "adopted" a mouse. Not a lil white mouse from a pet store, but a field mouse that we found almost dead in the toilet. I didnt want to put it out in the cold while half dead and wet, so I had it in a box to recover. Showed it to my wife...she deemed it🤩 "precious, with its little ears and feet"...so now we have a house for a mouse in our house. So far, it doesn't seem to have any diseases, but its still under observations. Hoo boy...

People Share 40 Things The General Public Doesn’t Understand About Their Profession Marriage and Family Therapist

Your partner only wants your advice if they ask for it. They want you to listen and emphasize. Tell them what they're going through must (fill in appropriate adjective here- examples: suck, feel amazing, feel overwhelming, etc)

No, you haven't found your soulmate. You're brain is giving you a super boost in brain chemicals so you screw like bunnies and have babies. Tell me in 1.5-2 years if they're still your soulmate. That's how long it takes for that chemical boost to return to their "normal for you" state. And not feeling fireworks at the first kiss doesn't mean anything. Plenty of amazing long-term relationships started from friendship (which by the way is what you'll need to have a long-term, fulfilling relationship).

Also... be kind to each other. You will each f*** things up in your relationship. All is not lost because one of you talked to an ex, forgot a birthday, etc. Relationships go through seasons and I promise if you can work though the winter you'll have an amazing summer! Every relationship sucks sometimes (screw you social media and your highlight reels).

Lastly, though there are so many more- I can't stress this one enough, there is no such thing as my problem or yours. Though the work to get through it will look different for each of you, once you decide to become partners, everything becomes ours to work through together. Yes, even that thing that happened before you met but is getting in the way of your healthy relationship. And especially that thing you never want to talk about that is getting in the way of your relationship.

Having spent some significant time as a patient on Psych Wards (not special needs, just adults) I feel quite well placed to comment on my experience. The ward staff were always ready to offer an ear, a hug or to nip to the shops. If it was in their power, they would do it for you in a heartbeat. Whilst the modesty of this chap is admirable, I have to disagree, these doctors and nurses ARE heroes, do a wonderful job and deserve praise.

Complaining to my manager isn't going to get me fired. If anything he's going to be even more blunt with you about how much of a power tripping c**t you're being because he knows for a fact that you can't get him fired either. Retail workers, especially during a labor shortage and especially when they've got a few years experience, aren't so replacable that you can get one axed just by complaining to management. Most of the time your complaints won't even reach anyone with the authority to fire someone. Even if they do, they get so many complaints from unreasonable people that the management is far more likely to side with an employee that's in good standing with the store than with some random weirdo that didn't get what they wanted.
