Not everything goes downhill as we age. Well, surely our close friends circle becomes smaller, hangovers get worse and more responsibilities fall on our shoulders. But a new body of research has shown that some of our brain abilities improve as we age.

For example, a 2011 study looking at data from more than 60,000 people found that our ability to recognize faces continued to improve as we age—until just after we hit age 30. "At almost any given age, most of us are getting better at some things and worse at others," lead study author and MIT department of brain and cognitive sciences researcher Joshua Hartshorne commented to Business Insider.

Another more recent study found that some of our abilities, like reading others' emotions and recalling events that have just happened, to name a few, keep improving until we turn 30. Incredibly, skills like basic math and a larger vocabulary rise throughout our lives and reach their peak around when we turn 50.

Does that mean that we get smarter with age? Well, it depends what we define as ‘smart,’ but some of our cognitive abilities do indeed improve as we age. However, some will deteriorate, like our ability to quickly process and recall information (also known as fluid intelligence), which peaks at about the age of 18. After its peak, those abilities continually fall over the rest of our lives.

But that doesn’t mean it’s bad news for us. There is another study suggesting that having a greater purpose in life can help protect against cognitive decline among older adults. In fact, greater purpose in life has been linked to reduced all-cause mortality and cardiovascular problems, increased longevity, maintenance of general physical functioning, reduced risk of stroke and reduced incidence of sleep disturbances.

Don’t use Aluminium foil at all. It harms the environment and your health as well. Just butter your bread tin or use baking paper.

And this is how you cut your fingers. If it goes flat the newly cut top of the can is razor sharp and you'll need to be careful not to cut your fingers. If it used on its side then the top in still blunt.

I prefer to use them on the side of the can, that way you don't spill liquid everywhere, and it won't cut the lip off leaving a sharp edge on the top. It also maintains the cans integrity..... mm Tegridy

Incorrect. Read the manual. You are indeed meant to leave the safe rolled edge intact, and dispose of the can with the sharp-edged lid tucked inside. Cutting the side instead of the top makes the lid marginally less guillotinesque, but changes your can into a cookiecutter that will destroy your trash bag.

Get one that cuts thru the seam sideways at the top of the can. Whole lid lifts off with part of the seam attached, no sharp edges

I recently discovered that can openers come with a small magnetic piece to help you take out the lid without cutting your fingers. Thirty eight years, ladies and gentlemen. Thirty eight years.

If you open the can on the side and it's full to the top (usually is) you're going to spill. Opening from the top leaves a rim to keep the contents from sloshing.

Do it sideways if you want a nice sharp can edge to lacerate yourself on. Otherwise do it upright. Both work.

Doing it your way leaves a very dangerous sharp edge. No. You gain nothing opening it your way. Besides, the right way has been there since the dawn of can openers.

...wouldn't this just take the rim off the can and leave the top where it is? i don't understand. the can opener goes sideways because that's how i've always used it and it works, why try and find a different method for it?

Try this with a thirty year old can-opener, and you will see it does not work - as this totally depends on the contruction of the tin opener. Today most can openers are made for horizontal cutting to remove the lid, while most old-fashioned ones were made to cut the lid from above.

If you cut the side instead of the lid it leaves a razor-sharp edge on the can and you will get cut.

Try it. But be careful; the can will have a vicious sharp edge. The can, that is, the part you need to work with, will cut the c**p out of you. The lid, the bit you throw away first, has a nice safe rolled edge. Hmm. Maybe this tip is up for debate.

If you open it flat, you will likely have a very sharp edge....opening sideways usually leaves a duller, smoother, rim.....

My great grandmother opened cans like this to leave the sharp edge. She used the sharp edge to quickly cut onions, etc when she made lunch for the logging camps.

You can do this with a regular handheld can opener with some cans. But it is harder to crank and still leaves a sharp edge.

This is false. If you use it the way he is saying to, use dull the cutting blade since it is having to go thru the thicker metal rim.

Using it this way make the entire top a huge razor blade. No safe way to grab the can and make it a little flexible. Buy the special can open the pinches the can to make a safe lid.

This, again, is b******t. It depends on the can opener. There are some that go on the top, but most go sideways. He still seems to be a boy who sees the world for the first time and now things no one else has ever seen it before.

Actually, it goes either way but if you put it sideways you need to spin the handle towards you so the torque keeps the handles from separating.

Depends on the opener and depends on the can. But yeh, if you try and fail to open it from the side and it becomes a mangled mess of sharp edges you can then try the top technique.
