You should be drinking celery juice every morning. You must avoid dairy at all costs, but if you want to make your coffee healthier, you should put a spoonful of butter into it. Fruit should be the majority of your diet, but carbs are evil and will cause you health problems. You should go keto if you want to lose weight, but eating foods with a lot of fat is dangerous. You should be using essential oils every day, but the only way you can truly be healthy inside and out is if you have the proper crystals displayed around your home.

When it comes to what is actually healthy, there’s a lot of contradictory information floating around out there. So how are we to know what is safe and what isn’t? After all, some doctors used to recommend smoking cigarettes less than a hundred years ago.

One curious Reddit user recently asked, “What’s something most people think is healthy today that future people will shake their heads at?”, and thousands of people called out common dietary advice, lifestyle practices and habits in the replies. Below, we’ve gathered some of their most thought-provoking responses, so be sure to upvote the things you are wary of as well. Then let us know in the comments what else you think will be viewed as unhealthy in the future, and if you’re interested in checking out another Bored Panda article debunking food and nutrition myths, you can find that right here.

Honestly, this is dumb. When you believe something is good for you - being religious or non-religious, it depends on your preference - you naturally want to share with your kids. And even if you don't want teach them about it, it will still influence them. We shouldn't deny that it has to happen and learn a good way to do it instead.

“What’s Something Most People Think Is Healthy Today That Future People Will Shake Their Heads At?” (45 Answers) There's been a really weird trend of people drinking "alkaline water" that has a pH of 9.5 or some s**t. Here's the truth about it: the second it comes in contact with your stomach acid, it's not gonna be alkaline anymore. The pH of your body is most likely fine, and if it actually isn't, you should be in an emergency room instead of listening to some snake oil salesman

While, of course, everyone deserves respect, regardless of size, the idea that being very overweight is a healthful lifestyle, is just wrong. Sure, most of the bodily harm of obesity won't catch up to you, until later in life. But it WILL catch up to you. I've been overweight most of my life. While I'm generally healthy, my knees have paid the price, of supporting the extra poundage. Don't fool yourself into thinking you'll escape the bodily harm of long term obesity.

I wish society could acknowledge that being obese is not healthy, and accept and welcome people who are obese, without shaming or discriminating. Being cruel to people doesn't make them lose weight, or help them make healthy choices. It is very hard to sustain a lifestyle of self-dicipline, exercise and healthy eating, while you're being bombarded with judgement, disapproval and disgust every day. I was obese through my teens and twenties, and desperately wanted to lose weight. It's hard. It's harder when you have low self-esteem and everyone around you is expecting you to fail.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against sugar (in fact I probably eat too much myself), I'm just tired of people justifying it because its "natural". Asbestos is natural, but that ain't good for you.

Except under rare circumstances, circumcision is unnecessary. If you want one as an adult then so be it. But do not inflict your choice onto your children.

Infant circumcision is objectively no different than insisting parents have to choose whether their children get to keep their adult teeth, or have them invasively excavated at birth. It's just not something that ever needs to be done to a child.

There are medical reasons sometimes, especially different kinds of phimosis. Doing it for aesthetic reasons does not make any sense. Neither makes religious circumcision (from a strictly rational point of view), but it made sense once when the overall hygienic conditions were much worse to prevent infections.

Let’s at least call it what it is: male genital mutilation. If a boy grows up and wants to cut off a part of his penis, that’s a decision he can make. My parents allowed me to make that choice and after 42 years, I still don’t see a reason to mutilate my own body. Thanks Mum and Dad!

Not to mention, infants and young children have been known to die from blood loss from being genitally mutilated. That and the outdated "they can't feel it/are too young to remember" bs. There is a documentary called "The elephant in the hospital" specifically about MGM and how horrific it is. I am absolutely an "intactivist". Not many people know that in Judaism, it actually was quite literally just the absolute smallest bit off the tip and somehow it morphed into butchering off the entire foreskin. There are so many myths that have been proven false about MGM (like "bUT it'S CLeaNer". How is letting a fresh wound sit in a diaper full of waste cleaner? "BaBIes DoN't FEel iT. THe cRyInG is fRoM bEinG HeLd dOwN" They absolutely do! I'm sure one would feel having their eyelid cut off without anesthetic. "We CaN't AnEsTheTize BaBies" We sure can, as many have had major surgery days old, like on the heart or other internals. Dosing for small bodies has been around for ages.)

The endless dismissive false equivalencies people use to diminish the severity and impact of circumcision are so infuriatingly lazy. The "parents make decisions for their children all the time that they don't like" is such a bad-faith response to shutting down the discussion. As a humanist, all of the arguments for infant circumcision are equally absurd. To me the notion that it's up to the "parents to decide" whether to permanently alter someone else's body is so perplexing. As far as bodily autonomy is concerned, I would have exactly the same reaction people asserted if it was up to "parents to decide" whether their children should have their adult teeth or not. It's just not. These are choices to be made only by the person to whom the body belongs.

Idk, but I used to help take care of the young babies in a school I went to. It was terrible seeing the amount of pain the recently circumcised babies went through during diaper changes and hearing them screaming, and then their dressing on their sensitive parts having to be changed and carefully cleaned. I think one baby ended up with an infection. They still need to pee and poop, and be sitting in diapers. Absolutely terrible.

The right wingers in the US have been throwing such a transphobic tizzy fit lately calling gender affirming care (including but not limited to) the "genital mutilation of children." I am *somehow* not at all surprised that I have yet to hear any of them recognize that circumcision without medical necessity IS genital mutilation. Honestly, why can't they be bothered to take a moment to learn about anything before they open their mouths and vomit BS on anyone who will listen?

Circumcision is and has always been performed with the specific objectives of diminishing sexual gratification and making it harder to masturbate. That needs to be a part of informed consent for prospective parents. Circumcision is an ethical and societal black eye that our country has been uncomfortable talking about for over a century, but it's indefensible. Real, authentic talk about the impacts this practice has had on millions is more than overdue!

The only reason I hear parents getting it for their sons is because they believe it's easier to keep their peckers clean. Yet, in prenatal class we were taught how to clean in the folds and it's not that difficult nor time consuming. The other reason is they're thinking about their son's sex life before he's born. That always seemed a bit .... weird to me. Other parents I've spoken to thought so, as well.

The American Association of Pediatrician's recommendations on genital cutting were explicitly based on the knowledge that circumcision makes masturbation more difficult, and orgasms less pleasurable. How many parents would have had their sons circumcised if this were an explicitly required disclosure as a part of informed consent?

I'm so glad our list child was a girl because my wife and I had a huge debate over this and I was not going to allow it. Her argument was that I don't know what it's like to be different and mocked for that, which is largely true. My argument was should we perpetuate child mutilation just so our kids will save being teased a little in school if someone happens to see his penis

Prefer your view to be honest... Doing something to 'fit in' isn't a great reason. It's presuming that his penis would ever be seen and then that he would be teased with no idea if that would really happen. It's also not exactly unknown or unheard of in the US to be uncircumcised. Children get teased for a vast array of reasons, hard to prevent it from ever happening and making a permanent and physical change seems extreme. Could go and live in Europe!! Would fit right in then!

For any one interested in a conversation about why this practice persists in opposition to both medical evidence and common sense, check out r/FriendsOfTheFrenulum Acknowledging the cultural rationalization and tacit acceptance of this practice is an important step in delegitimizing non-consensual, non-therapeutic procedures. https://www.reddit.com/user/C4Charkey/comments/wu9rnd/growing_up_intact_in_the_us_why_im_done/

No problem, if you don't understand any of my answer just say. Circumcision is a surgical procedure to remove the foreskin, the skin that covers the tip of the penis. It's actually there to protect the head of the penis. Some parents think it is okay to circumcise boy babies for religious reasons. Some claim there are cleanliness benefits. Most of the world does not circumcise their babies though, which rather proves the point that it's not necessary except in a few cases where there may be a medical problem with the child's penis. Circumcision can also cause problems. Overall, most people on this planet do not see it as a necessary thing at all.

knew two people whose kids had to get circumcised when they were a few years old...general anesthesia and pain for several days...also worked with a man who had to be circumcised as an adult...he encouraged everyone to have their sons circumcised shortly after birth...questions were had about circumcision decreasing sexual pleasure/sensation...he said there was almost no difference, and still recommended infant circumcision to prevent tears, infections, etc....so, i had my son circumcised when he was three days old with topical anesthesia...his head of his penis was a little tender when touched for maybe a day or two...babies sleep most the time at that age...and they heal super fast...

I mean, yes it's definitely much worse, but it's a religious preference as well and as close to a similar situation as you cam get. I'm not saying I think we should allow clitoral removal, just weird that people think circumcisions are normal and haven't really ever (until recently) had a problem with it.

Nothing that is meant to be there should be removed unless medically necessary. We are born with a wide variety of body parts and all of them have or had a function. We might not always know what that is (we know now the appendix DOES do something) but removing it for religion, for aesthetics... even the notion that it's cleaner, big nope. Wash it ffs. If the child has a diagnosed medical problem then okay, but only then. Men who are okay with having been circumcised have absolutely nothing to compare their circumstances to - you can't know what it would be like with a foreskin. Yet it has been proven that there is a decrease in sensitivity (sorry lads!) and a risk with things like erectile disfunction. The health benefits that people often mention, such as HIV and prevention of penile cancer (with the most likely cause being HPV) are easily improved upon by the wearing of a condom. Recent? I've known people against it for years.

Originally this was done out of a hygienical precaution in tribes that had very little water at their disposal, hence washing was impossible and infections ensued. To enforce this their leaders turned it into a religious thing. Now altering your intimate parts is turning into a trend because apparently all women and all men want to look like a p*rnstar down there.

all muslim and jewish males get circumcised...muslims make up 1/4 of the world's population...the vast majority of nonmuslim males in the u.s., australia, phillipines, south korea, and orthodox christian males in n. and e. africa, are circumcised...so, yes "there are still some countries in the world" without "hygienic modern conditions"...but these males are not rare oddities and most don't live in backward societies without hot water and regular bathing...once again, the historical, prejudicial roots of anti-circumcision thought amongst europeans may have unintentionally (or intentionally) rears itself...there has been much talk of "barbaric practice"..."barbarian" comes from the greek term for someone from the barbary coast (i.e., northern africa)...you know, the (darker) people w/ poor hygiene living in sandy deserts who never bathe, discussed above....in the 14th and 15th centuries, i.e., when the moors ruled spain, the word "barbarian" came to mean "savages, rude, uncivilized"...

Have you heard about circumcision helping to prevent catching HIV quite significantly? What do you think about that, it's kind of both an issue and also a small help? Though that's an adult's own decision to make, mostly in high HIV count countries plus it's still not 100% guarantee. But about 50/50. Just doesn't it give then a false thought of "being safe from hiv now?"

I talked to my husband and let him make the choice since to me it is more a guy decision for our baby boy. We ended up doing it for him to have easier ability for hygiene and we have an amazing doctor who did a great job. He barely cried and he was back to his normal self within seconds of me holding him. Everything still works down there lol and absolutely no complications. I don't see it as necessary at all, but definitely the choice of the parents.

The vast majority of the world doesn't circumcise boy babies and they don't have any issues keeping themselves clean. Parents should just teach their children to wash properly. The skin IS meant to be there and has a job protecting the head of the penis. It was evolved that way for a reason. Remove it and there can be future complications, such as erectile disfunction and it does decrease sensitivity. It should not be the choice of the parents to do something that is not medically necessary.

Circumcision is an important religious ritual in several religions, and causes no measurable harm to the child. A flap of skin is removed, not anything more significant. "Female circumcision" is entirely different, rendering a girl or woman unable to experience sexual pleasure, while circumcised men have no difficulty experiencing sexual gratification. In addition, circumcision for boys has been shown to reduce several health risks to those boys and to their future sexual partners. Lastly, adult male circumcision is a major procedure, with numerous possible complications, while circumcision of infants is simple and rarely involves complications. Parents have the right to make medical decisions for their children, and that includes choosing harmless or beneficial procedures.

Parents should NOT have the right to make a permanent, physical change to the child where it isn't lifesaving or life-improving and where no consent can ever be given. Those health risks you mention? Can be dealt with by wearing condoms (HIV and HPV). It is entirely unnecessary in this day and age to do this. Religion is just the worst reason to permanent change a child. We owe our children updated and far better practices.

It would be fine if uncircumcised men kept the penis and underside of the foreskin clean, but not all of them do.

“What’s Something Most People Think Is Healthy Today That Future People Will Shake Their Heads At?” (45 Answers) From a doctor’s perspective, half of the US health food industry is absolute garbage.

1. Supplements. What’s in them? They aren’t regulated, so anything could be! Many studies have found a lack of actual advertised product at best, harmless filler such as saw dust commonly, and heavy metal and other toxin contamination such as lead and arsenic at worst. All for the cheap price of $$$$$ and your health. Is it possible that some could be helpful for specific things? Yup! But are most things on the shelf going to fit in that category? Absolutely not, no.

2. Most “diet” plans/snacks/products. Low in fat but high in sugar? Serving size of 1/4 of what is sold? Contains some mysterious fruit “scientifically shown” to combat the laws of physics? A laxative in disguise? Most of these plans are just like get rich quick schemes. They are sold to provide a quick path to a healthier and better life. But diet isn’t a quick fix. It’s a slow combination of everyday habits. Diet culture is a toxic scam and their advertisements are sickening both for the lies commonly told and the mental health toll on the targeted audience. Hell, most of the “good choice” food items at the grocery could be considered unhealthy processed garbage.

3. Fruit juice. Despite what Steve Jobs believed, fruit juices are pure sugar in a glass. Calories with limited nutrient content and a high glycemic load.

4. The way we teach physical activity. We use sports as a competition and filter kids out, only supporting the best of the best financially and through school programs. But the reality is that team and club sports can keep people active and engaged in their communities for life. This is healthy. If we can foster low-level skill sports for everyone we will have healthier and happier communities. Except for maybe American football. That s**t will give you brain injuries.

Eat proper healthy foods, stop buying processed, sugary foods and do something physical every day if only just going for a walk...that is a good 'diet'. I never got the keto diet...soooo much fat. I knew someone who went on it, lost weight and felt better, but as soon as she went off the diet, boom.. weight is back...so one has to keep eating all those rich fatty foods forever more? Though I did drool at some of the keto foods and recipes. Also, a tip when shopping, all the healthier food is on the outside of the aisles...stay out of the aisles unless you need baking products like flour, etc..most of it is all processed food.

Ironically most essential oil users avoid the oils that actually have some "real" active ingredients like cineol (in eucalyptus oil), menthol (in mint oil) or terpinen (tea tree oil) for being "too aggressive". Also oils should NEVER be used instead of actual medical care.

I doubt this one. The apps and platforms we use will change, but not the habit itself. People are social creatures, first we had penpals, then we talked in forums, then chatroom apps and then BAM social media made things easy. Sure we probably won't use twitter/instagram/whatever 20 years from now, but there will be something.

The way we look at having kids.

You have a dogs**t job, your spouse works as well so nobody will ever be home, when you are home you'll both be tired and miserable from work, you and/or your spouse *clearly* have childhood issues to work out in therapy, you/your spouse or *both* have a genetic condition of some kind be it mental or physical, the food in the house is all pre-made/freeze-dried/frozen/junk, you live in an apartment/too small of a house, you're a slave to massive debt for a useless degree/a car/etc, etc, etc...

Go ahead and have kids, it'll be great and thier lives will be absolutely fine!

It seems you either went through a difficult childhood or are struggling as a parent (or both), so I'm sorry you had to go through that. However, it's not the same case for everyone. I have two kids, and although they tire me out and cost a fortune, they bring me unbridled joy. I love them more than I thought possible. So, for me, it's absolutely worth it.

Meat in general, but particularly processed, smoked and grilled meats. I think in 10-20 years most people in the US will be cutting meat consumption by double-digit percentages due to cost. Health studies show our need for protein is much better fulfilled with a combination of (1) smaller servings of meat than is now common and (2) non-meat protein sources. Meat will still be part of our diet, it's the preparation and quantity that people in the future will find incredible. Processed meats, smoked meats, and grilled meats have compounds on the surface shown to cause cancer.

Mind you, I find this depressing because I eat all these things. Too late for me though, you all save yourselves and I'll take the hit along with your bacon.

We're in serious trouble about that. If it were up to me, I'd limit the number of plastic species allowed in food packaging, apply a mandatory colour code to it to make recycling actually possible, and demand an explanation why anything else is used, if some company actually wants to. Then, we hit the sheer minimum required to do this in any useful way, and not just pretend and execute pointless sorting habits as if we were addicted, knowing it won't make much of a difference, if any at all.
