Powerful Photos Reveal The Real People Behind The Military Uniforms
Whether you think military officers are upstanding heroes or jack-booted thugs, few of us actually take the time to consider the real people behind those imposing uniforms. Professional photographer Devin Mitchell, however, created a touching photo series called “The Veteran Art Project” that examines real faces on the other side of the uniform.
Using Photoshop, Mitchell has created powerful images of uniformed servicemen and women whose mirrored reflections reveal who they are – and vice versa.
“The military community has expressed their interest in using my photo ideas to communicate how many of them feel to be living double lives while serving in the military,” Mitchell told Mic. “People who have never served have shown interest in knowing more about the diversified aspects of what causes veterans to feel that way.”

“One photo that really speaks to me the most is the picture depicting Joshua Zitting and his husband Patrick Lehmann,” said Mitchell, who is openly gay himself. “It reminds me of how unfair it is that this man can serve while enjoying all of this constitutional rights as an American, while other men and women similar to him cannot in other parts of the country, due in part to recent decisions such as the one made by circuit judge Jeffrey Sutton. Judges like him are blind in my eyes. Maybe pictures like this will help him see better.”

That shows that clothes never says true about us.... If you put on heels and dress nobody will say that you are military servant.
Load More Replies...Sad that there aren't any Coast Guardsmen in this collection. They serve and protect our country as well.

I love the little girl and the parents, it speaks a lot about what a military family has to go through.
I love this! You should make a book and donate the proceeds to wounded warriors. I'd buy it :)
This is a great article and the images are just mind boggling. It really gives you something to think about. - www.tukz.com
Thanks for doing this. I wish my late husband could have seen this. He's one of so many veterans that could no longer see themselves alive.

People are people. Would like to see a similar article with, social workers, garbagemen and so on. Why are soldiers so interesting?
Because we volunteer to do things that you are too frightened to do.

Wish I had that kind of creativity. As a Navy Vet myself, I'm still amazed how much the uniform has changed. I wore dungarees.
Perfect! Just wish they could've asked me to do one. I would wear my ASU's and Sterson proudly in the mirror, and the most glorious saree!❤️
Great work and brilliant idea! I'm so impressed by the different characters... Great respect to militaty !
Show a few cosplayers, because i know several who were former military
To Mikael Thrash photo, I am sure you got the no shaving profile but if you can shape the beard you can shave it. You look like a Jack A*s.
Great article, but soldiers refer to the army, sailors refer to navy, airmen air force, marines marine corps. As a collective we're troops.
Proof that you should never judge a book by it's cover!!! Awesome pics!

I really loved seeing the military moms. I am active duty with 3 kids. I always get crazy looks!! People can do both!
The Seabee was probably told to wear her type 1s and thumbed her nose by hanging her type 3s in the background.
No I wasnt. I am at a fleet command right now BUT I love being a Bee so I hung my type 3 because I wanted to show all of me. It was all me.
