A little over a year ago I picked up a camera and started playing around with it. I took my son and his rabbit and tried in vain to get some great shots. I was about to give up, everything I had shot was so amateur! As I was looking through all of the horrible photos I took on the LCD screen on the back of my Samsung nx500 hoping that there was something that I wouldn’t immediately delete, I looked up to see what my son was up to and was shocked at the scene that was unfolding before my very eyes! I lifted my camera with little thought on focus or settings forgetting entirely that I was using a manual focus lens and snapped the shot. Just like that as soon as it had happened, it was over. Being frustrated because I couldn’t get them to do it again, I called it a day, not even bothering to check the photo because I new the odds of it being in focus was so slim.

It was days later when I realized I hadn’t dumped the photos off on my computer yet, dreading the experience, I started going through them. As expected, almost all of the photos I had taken were borderline trash and were immediately done away with! But then, as I came to the photo of the cow, that I had completely forgotten about, I stared in utter disbelief at the perfectly focused beautifully exposed masterpiece on my computer screen! Not even knowing how to edit it and frankly afraid to touch it and mess it up somehow, I enhanced the colors slightly and left it almost entirely as it was straight out of the camera.

When I posted in on social media it went viral and set me on a journey that was unexpected! I had hopped to capture a great photo just to have some bragging rights, but after that, I became obsessed with the art of photography, learning something new everyday and stretching my abilities. I named the photo “A Boy and His Bunny”. Now, just over a year later I decided it was time to try again, to capture a similar photo with the same boy (my oldest son) and the same cow, but not the same rabbit unfortunately, and use the knowledge I have acquired over a year to make a new photo.

I still don’t believe it’s as good as my original, and I still have so much to learn, but I’m still happy with it and it was so much fun to reenact! I thank my son and the credit is his for coming up with the Idea!

A Boy and His Bunny

A candid shot of my son introducing the cow to his bunny.

This is one of the first pictures I took when I started getting into photography. It was not planned at all. I took my son out to do some practice shots with his bunny and none of them turned out very good at all. After we were done, I was looking through some of the pictures on the LCD screen and feeling a little bit like a failure as I shifted through the amateur photos I took. When I looked up to see what my son was up to, I saw this scene unfolding before my eyes! I only had about 5 seconds to left the camera up and snap the picture, then it was over. What I think was neater then getting an award winning photo that day was just the fact that I was able to capture this moment with my son. My kids are really the whole reason I got into photography in the first place. So I give all of the credit for this photo to him for his playful and creative curiosity. Love you Richard!
