Tired of the Freddy Krueger and Friday the 13th movies? Want to settle in with a good read that is actually horrifying and holds a macabre fascination? You won’t find a better answer that that of Mangaka or, Japanese Manga Artist, Itou Junji.

Famously known for his “Tomie” series, that has been adapted upon the Japanese Film Screen, Itou Junji is the staple to the haunting images of Japanese culture. Using the severe contrast between light and dark and smooth and grunge to create jarring images that unsettle the viewer in his stories involving ‘curses’, ‘urban legends’, and the disturbing thoughts we think when we’re alone by ourselves.

Junji Itou uses contrast and jarring juxtaposition to bring out an eerie feeling in the viewer.
