There are always people who think they deserve more than everybody else. They constantly ask for a discount, try to gorge on more freebies than they can carry, never tip, and always try to get things for free. And there’s a specially dedicated place for them called “Choosing Beggars,” a 2.2M-strong subreddit that collects the most hilariously embarrassing cases.
And you may think that Thanksgiving, a national holiday which essentially encapsulates the word and the meaning giving, would stop them. Well, not really. Apparently, the festivity may as well serve as a perfect opportunity to have all its perks without putting in all the effort or losing a dime.
So this time we collected some of the most crazy examples of beggars in action: Thanksgiving edition. After you’re done, be sure to check out our previous posts with people whose ego and entitlement is too big for this tiny world here, here and here.

Grandma's Thanksgiving Rules
“Volunteer To Wait On My Family At Thanksgiving”
Great. She can do the same for me when I need my 5 indoor kitties fed, watered and poopy-scooped twice a day for a week while I'm at my family reunion. Oh, wait. Where'd she go?
Invite Us To Your Thanksgiving! But Only If You Have These Things And We Will Only Bring Dessert. Tia
This Thanksgiving may have been the most expensive one for the host so far. How come? Well, it turns out that agricultural economists, farmers and grocery executives predicted that nearly every component of the traditional American Thanksgiving dinner, from the disposable aluminum turkey roasting pan to the coffee and pie, come at a higher price this year.
Interestingly, last year, the cost of a Thanksgiving dinner for 10 was the lowest it had been since 2010, the American Farm Bureau reported. So what on earth has happened? Turns out that last year, during the height of the pandemic, everyone was laying low with celebrations, and very few people were buying groceries for big gatherings. Grocery sellers were keeping the prices of the Thanksgiving staple—turkey—pretty low to attract the shoppers.

But after the global vaccination, the world has opened up and big gatherings resumed as if they had never stopped. So did the demand for turkey and other foods, whose prices have been soaring rapidly this past year.
The New York Times suggests that we shouldn’t look for a single culprit to explain the phenomenon. According to them, the nation’s food supply has been battered by a knotted supply chain, high transportation expenses, labor shortages, trade policies and bad weather. Inflation is at play, too.
A Thanksgiving Choosing Beggar Who Thinks Meals Should Be Free
I don't see a problem with this? If she's no takers, then no one with $15 is interested. But I bet there are people that can swing for that amount that can't or don't want to cook their own dinner. She's not expecting homeless people to buy it.
I Present To You The Og Choosing Beggar: Marney And Her Thanksgiving Letter
"Why do I even bother" --- why indeed? Because you love the sound of your own voice?
Wow. I am bringing Jello and salad to this one!
Load More Replies...I feel like this woman hosted one too many Thanksgiving dinners having to do everything alone, then one too many dinners where people did not bring the side dishes she asked for or none at all and now she's gone off the bend.
Agree, the tone is a little off, but you get the feeling Marnie has dealt with the extended family's BS one time too many.
Load More Replies...Well... I don't know about this. That's 5 families to feed. I can understand the need to delegate cooking and buying stuff for the party. But they could have said it nicer or talked about it beforehand...
She could really be less of a control freak about it. Insisting people use your recipes and the kinds of containers you specify is batty af.
Load More Replies...A regulation sized casserole dish? What exactly is a "regulation size" casserole dish?
I think it’s smaller than an olympic sized casserole dish?
Load More Replies...Dear Amy, bring two pies. No knife needed. Knife will be provided by Michelle, who brings no pies.
We all know a Mike, he is married to Karin and doesn't like cheese!
Load More Replies...Dear Marney, I hope you have a nice dinner (what are you even contributing?) but I'm staying home and drinking all that lovely chardonnay myself (with some cheese).
Top of the list: Bring turnips, but not a lot, because most of us hate turnips
Why not just skip the turnips then??? Make something people actually like? Unless she assigned the turnips to the family that actually likes them?
Load More Replies...I apologise in advance for my family not being able to attend. However I sense a mild case of Covid coming on. Sniff.
Load More Replies...15 pounds of mashed potatoes isn't really that much for a large gathering. Both sides of my family serve mashed potatoes at thanksgiving and each does 20-35 pounds of potatoes. Both sides hosts 30-50 people depending on the year. This is a very reasonable request for a large family meal :)
Load More Replies...Good lord, I would have deleted that after the aluminum foil crack in the beginning and sent my regrets. "Sorry I can't make it, I only have foil for lids." And then actually enjoy your day instead of being barked at like a drill instructor. That person is more unpleasant than the grandma from above.
Can you imagine the wrath if you forgot the serving (Not soup) spoon??!
Load More Replies...She is demanding a large amount of food. I wonder what she prepared for this gathering. I personally would rather sit home and starve than attend a gathering with her.
Yep! Have a nice little homemade soup at hinfand cuddle up with my favorite loved-one :-)
Load More Replies...Yes, sir, General Marney, right away, sir. . . . No, sir, General Marney, that serving was prepared especially for you, sir, *especially* for you. Enjoy.
In the "regulation" serving dish, too. General Marney, sir. Not covered by foil.
Load More Replies...Both Marney and Grandma above are what people who are hosting thanksgiving would like to say but don’t. You have a lot more sympathy for marney if you host thanksgiving for 25 people and the person who volunteered to bring the mashed potatoes rolls up late with a 10lb bag of unpeeled, raw potatoes because they figured they could prepare them once they got there.
This doesn't sound like a choosing beggar. It sounds like the project manager of the church potluck that has had enough of your bad-cooking shenanigans....and turnips, apparently....
Marney, I regret to inform you that my family and I are unable to attend your Rhanksgiving Day. As part of raising my children strong and stable. I feel it is vital to their upbringing I set a good example by not putting myself in a social situation where I am forewarned that I shall be graded on my contribution and performance of my duties. My family will be having our own Thanksgiving meal, and I suspect that many of your invitees shall be joining me.
I totally would join! And I'd bring some CLOS du Bois without you having to ask for it. Further, I'd bring lots of "goodies" leaving in the back until you tell me what you need else ;-)
Load More Replies...Wow - seems like a lot of asparagus to me... and it's not even in season that time of year. CLOS DU BOIS? At least she knows the good stuff. Very bully tone she's got. I doubt she could be my friend
I'm thinking the families are a lot bigger than we imagined.
Load More Replies...Woooooow.... I would have hated to see her bridezilla side if this is what she is like just for hosting Thanksgiving.
If these people are going to be so specific why dont they make it themselves?
And 40 years later, Marney grows up to be the badass Grandma wanting to write everyone out her will if they don't show their faces at her Thanksgiving table.
This is someone who simply cannot relinquish control of the holidays or their meals to anyone else. I would be informing that particular relative that me and mine would be skipping all the usual holiday gatherings and doing something quieter this year. Better luck next year.
Yeah I've got a sense of humor too but I would seriously tell this person to go f**k themselves. If we are related or friends and you think you can demand such things from other people, I'd just as soon never speak or acknowledge you again.
"Looking forward to the 28th" so you can point out how somone brought the wrong spoon
That reads like it was written for the Shouts and Murmers page of the New Yorker.
So glad we dont have thanksgiving.... Christmas with family is bad enough
I attended formal military gathering that were less detailed and with fewer rules. Surprised not to see uniform of the day specified.
Because y'all weren't doing the cooking and serving, I'm guessing.
Load More Replies...Lady, get bangs or find some other way to feel a sense of control in your life, or you'll have no one to help you out when you actually need it (hint: things could be a lot worse than a non-"regulation" serving dish being used).
She said they f****d this one up before, though. I'm so curious about the enormous blue dish they brought!
Load More Replies...Um.....what exactly is "regulation size" when it comes to casserole dishes??
"Bring a turnip casserole, but most of us won't eat it because we hate turnips." Why the heck do you want them to make it then?!
That is exactly what would turn me off the invitation! Luckily I have never had such an invitational demand/ demanding invitation;-)
Load More Replies...Mostly reasonable. If she had to always do all the cooking alone and guests didn't care she must be fed up. But if someone doesn't have a lid and instead uses foil or brings regular spoon instead of some special one - what's the issue x.x I'm really glad my country doesn't have thanksgiving-like holiday with huge family gatherings...
If it needs to be heated in the microwave, it can’t have foil on top. Lack of serving spoons is a big pain at big dinner - the line really backs up behind uncle joe if he is trying to load his plate with potatoes using a soup spoon. But you can go to the dollar store and buy 10 serving spoons for $10 but that’s got to be done in advance.
Load More Replies...The Amayi "F**k Marney Pot Luck Dinner" at our house is already double-booked. Please seek parking spaces in advance.
this looks, sounds and reminds me of grannys letter, (#1) maybe before she becomes grandma. Pretty & organized too. I am getting a vibe of "Don't you dare show up on my doorstep!" however.
'If I ask you to bring your OFFERING [...]' Edit: Why so many casseroles? Marney literally asked everyone except the Amy person to bring a casserole, plus if most of you don't like turnips THEN YTF ARE YOU ASKING FOR A TURNIP CASSEROLE?!
I have a suspicion that the tableware and serving dishes will disappear into her cabinets before the end of the night, along with the leftovers. And her Thanksgiving WILL be ruined if she doesn't get her peppermint bark Haagen Dasz.
I don't know...I like her style..., but would get better help from others is she let them pick from a list
Name brand ice cream is only 48 oz, not half gallon. Those days are over, Marney. Also, the "yummy" peppermint bark ice cream is probably a quart.
Marney is Legend. I first saw this several years ago on Awkward Family Photos. Marney actually replied with an interesting defense of her rules.
Curious to know more of the backstory then if you can recall it. I have only ever seen this level of directive for gatherings in a couple of situations 1. everyone was so slack and the rules had to be put in place so that there was enough food for the gathering and it was not an entire S/show when it came to serving and eating (bit like some of Grandma's rules in this thread) 2. organiser was a micromanager with massive control issues whom was on every available community committee as an office bearer and made life hell for anyone that did not immediately submit to their demands over the tiniest things when they decided it had to be done "a certain way so things are done right"
Load More Replies...Maybe I'm weird, but I'd actually be glad for clear instructions like this if bringing something to a large family gathering because this lady sounds like she knows exactly what she's doing. Making one household do all the cooking would be unfair, and I bet gambling on everyone somehow knowing exactly what to bring and how much *without* this level of pre-planning has proven to be a logistical nightmare in the past. Also, I entirely agree with her stance on store brand vanilla ice cream. 😂
Few things makes me sour as instructions with caps and bold.
I can see where she’s coming from... we do this to an extent with our giant families. Just not quite that specifically. There is certainly a kinder way to present a request...
What, pray tell, is a "regulation size casserole"? Marney the Thanksgiving Bully has some serious control issues.
I have usually seen casserole dishes in either round or square that are either 1.8L, 2L or 4L (not sure of the US conversions on that) with lid. Bit like cake tins being standard sizes so that if you are following a recipe that specifies certain size it will work out without having to d**k about with scaling things. This is also why I am very grateful Xmas happens during summer here so we can have BBQ or cold stuff and salads and sit back watching attendees battle each other with super soakers
Load More Replies...So what exactly is left for Marney to do?Cook the turkey(s) and provide a counter, chairs, and table?
I actually agree with her. If you don't give specific instructions, it will not be made right. She probably knows that. And I as a guest would be happy to know what is expected of me!
If the whole family hates turnips, why the HELL are you still making them? Waste of food and money and energy. Give the fiver you'd spend on turnips to help the less fortunate or something.
Wow. Idiot proof very detailed instructions... is there any especific suitable word for a thanksgiving bridezilla-stlyled host?? (Seriously asking)
I'm going to be super generous with this one. She mentions appreciating their offers to assist, which leads me to believe that these families volunteered to take on some of the workload. If that's the case, I don't see being specific about the recipe as going overboard. If I told my mother I'd bring her Mac and Cheese, I would bring *her* Mac and Cheese (I'd have more than her to contend with if I didn't). We're talking 15lbs of potatoes. This isn't a small gathering. It may not even be a gathering at a home but something at a venue. Regardless, asking for specific dish sizes can boil down to oven real estate when reheating. Lid versus foil can go with reheating and storage. And serving utensils are an obvious need with many sides. It's on the militant side, but it isn't excessive if she's just giving marching orders to people who signed up for the job.
I think Marney needs to just do a small dinner for her immediate family victims. I've hosted larger gatherings, and they were probably a lot more fun than this one. My instructions? Bring a dish to share if you can.
I'm sorry but the part where she calls the food an "offering" twice is where I stopped taking Marney seriously lol
Why so many different family names? Not that I have an opinion, I’ve just not been to that sort of turkey day.
Lots of daughters on the side of the families that host.
Load More Replies...I wonder if she delegates their wardrobe and seating positions as well
Why can't she provide a list of things that she may need and ask people to tell her what they are able to bring? or even ask everyone to bring 1 or 2 things. would that not work?
I think she's already tried other things and had many people screw up in many different ways by now. That's the impression that slowly filtered into my brain.
Load More Replies...People take this holiday way too seriously... Chill, that's just a pointless pre-christmas eating contest.
She must be the family bossy boots. Just glad she’s not part of my family - if she was I’d send her a dog turd in newspaper, on her doorstep, on fire.
“Name Brand Only” Thanksgiving
Numbers also speak for themselves. The Consumer Price Index for food was up 4.6 percent from a year ago in September, while the prices for meat, poultry, fish and eggs soared a whopping 10.5 percent. For those wondering what’s up with the sky-high turkey prices, it may have to do with the fact that the price of corn, which most commercial turkeys feed on, more than doubled in some parts of the country from July 2020 to July 2021.
The Department of Agriculture turkey report released on Friday has also stated that whole frozen birds already cost 25 cents/pound more than they did a year ago. With much bigger holiday celebrations than last year, the demand for festive foods is likely not going anywhere, so there’s a slim chance you’ll get your hands on a turkey bargain.

I was just thinking this. It was never this bad, before 2000 ish? Not sure. But how did it get so bad? People don't get their way, and they won't budge. Or if someone won't give in, that person is automatically selfish and the cause of problems where others suffer. I really am curious as to why this is so bad. Sure, some people were never told 'no'. Some people just don't stand up to these people, so their behavior is basically enabled. But why else? If this wasn't a big issue before, how and why is it so bad? I want to understand what happened. (Sorry for the rant)

I can't imagine the scale of Thanksgiving in the US. Can you not just... miss one year if you can't afford it? Does it have to be a gigantic meal with turkey and trimmings? Can't you just get together with family over a few beers, or just chill at home?
Dodo, I agree. For my family (me, my husband and son), we spend a relaxed day at home and never have the huge turkey dinner that seems traditional. It seems a dubious holiday, at best. We spend a moment sharing what each of us is grateful for. That seems a better way to spend the day.
Load More Replies...Yep. This is the world we live in. People don't get taught the difference between right and wrong anymore; Only "What is in it for me and my immediate gratification"
Wow, just wow. We don’t have Thanksgiving here, but just like Christmas, isn’t the company you have more important than the food? Yeah, it’s nice to have a fancy meal, but it’s not the be all and end all of an occasion. We have extended family Christmas and we take turns hosting it, but everyone pitches in and brings food or drinks. Honestly, I wouldn’t care if it was eating bread and butter as long as I was with those I loved
These people are very messed up in the head, surely they have a lot of mental and emotional problems and obviously we not raised right. Sounds awful to be them. They probably don't even understand why no one wants to be around them. Many probably only think of themselves because they've been in survival mode all their life. And done of them might literally be sociopaths, there's that too. But honestly I just feel bad for them.
When did it become something to be proud of that you are a beggar? I was raised that you should be happy/ proud when you can help others less fortunate. And if you are on the needing end, you ask quietly and work your ass off to get out of that situation. I still find the thought of bankruptcy humiliating ( it equals failure).
I can't truly grasp the audacity in these people. If you can call them that. When someone extends kindness, either accept with gratitude or decline with grace. Never ever believe others owe it to you. If growing up poor has thought me anything, it's okay to be lacking in material things as long as your dignity is in tact.
Most of this list was just Board Panda and Pandas shaming poor people and non native speakers. Really disappointed and disgusting right now.
