It’s hard not to despise the things that cause you pain and suffering. When Tiffany Yonts was 14 years old, she received the Tetanus and Diphtheria (Td) vaccine as part of a routine physical, however, what she experienced next was nowhere near ‘routine.’ As a result from the shot, Tiffany nearly died. She developed the untreatable Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS).
“I was misdiagnosed for two years (with multiple different things; my diagnosis changed constantly), so not even knowing what I was dealing with made it nearly impossible to come to terms with what had happened to me,” Tiffany told Bored Panda. “I was in a powerful state of denial. Whenever I had an ounce of energy, I would use it to pretend that my life was still normal. I lost swimming, which was both my deepest passion and my job. I had only recently started working as a swim coach for young kids and I loved it with all of my heart. So, it definitely took me some time to accept that I’d basically lost my identity while also being completely in the dark when it came to what was actually happening with my body.”

GBS is a rare autoimmune disorder in which a person’s own immune system mounts an inflammatory response, causing damage to their peripheral nerves. It can affect the sensory, motor and autonomic nerves. Symptoms can include sensory disturbances in the hands, arms, feet and legs, muscle weakness and loss of reflexes. In some cases, this can lead to paralysis.
“After I learned what my diagnosis actually was, I spent a long time researching it and learning a lot about health and medicine,” she added. “I even studied East Asian medicine (with a heavy dose of biomed) for a while and, even though I was already pro-vaccine by that point, it helped me to really understand the physical processes and science behind vaccines and why they’re so necessary for public health.”
Fourteen years following the start of her health problems, Tiffany finally decided to share her take on them, in an attempt to send a message to all anti-vaxxers.

“I was never anti-vaccine, even right after everything happened. I think that I already understood that very few people reacted to vaccines the way that I did and that I just happened to choose the short straw instead of one of the other 999,999 long straws,” Tiffany said. “I understood pretty early on that all medical treatments and procedures come with some level of risk. Nobody can ever fully anticipate what a person’s body is going to do in reaction to any particular procedure. Nobody gave me that vaccine with the intention of giving me GBS. They gave it to me with the intention of keeping me from getting tetanus and diphtheria. And that’s the same reason that they give it to everyone else. I was unlucky, but most other people benefited from the same vaccine.”
“As I learned more about the efficacy of vaccines and the importance of herd immunity, it really made me understand how important vaccines are. That’s what really made me switch from being passively pro-vaccine to being outspokenly pro-vaccine. Not only do vaccines protect those who get them from truly terrifying diseases that we’ve managed to largely eradicate, but they also protect immunocompromised people (like infants, cancer patients, other people with autoimmune disorders, etc.) who can’t be vaccinated from getting those same diseases. Herd immunity is so important and a healthy person refusing to get vaccinated puts all of those people at risk, and those are the people that most need our protection.”
Tiffany said that out of all the GBS symptoms she experiences, general exhaustion and weakness, as well as constant body pain (which makes her even more tired), are the most difficult. “I get weird neuropathy in random places at random times, but I’m mostly used to that now. I do still struggle with breathing, but it’s nowhere near as terrible as it was before. It’s been almost 15 years now, and, honestly, I don’t remember what it felt like to not have all of these symptoms. It sucks to not be able to walk long without stopping or being in a wheelchair, but I roll with it (haha, pun). I’ve learned how to manage my own expectations and how to take care of myself so that things don’t get too bad. It’s the little things that still get to me. Taking a shower exhausts me completely and I can barely do anything afterward. Putting a sheet on my bed makes me winded every time, and I have to sit down to catch my breath. Those little, everyday things are discouraging. But I do the best that I can with them.”
She also wanted to thank everyone for the support she has received. “I honestly didn’t expect my story to go anywhere. I mean, I wanted it to, just so people could understand the truth of the situation, but I never expected people to pay attention. The way that I see it, if my story can help even one person, all of this will have been worth it. That might sound fake-humble, but really, when you spend a large portion of your life barely leaving the house, or even barely leaving your room, it starts to make you feel like having any kind of impact is impossible, and falling into feeling useless is way too easy.”
People were incredibly grateful to Tiffany for sharing her experience

My mom has this and though she doesn't have it nearly to that extant it was still an extremely terrifying situation because it is so hard to get a diagnosis and once she did have the diagnosis so few people around us understood what was happening. Her diagnosis has made me so passionate about people getting vaccines because if they don't she is in danger. My mom's life depends on other people.

People, please consider those of us who can't be vaccinated because of illness and disease and vaccinate yourself and your children!!!

It was once known as the silver spoon disease, because you allieviated the symptoms (hopefully for long enough that the natural antibodies could start building) by shoving a silver spoon down the patient's throat to open the airway. What a brave and magnanimous girl: you deserve to have some kind of improvement in your physical health because you are a good, intelligent person.
ohh shut up and your anti vaccine nonsense, get educated you damm moron and quiet encouraging peasants to not get vaccinated and promote more disease
Its a lie to say people never have bad reactions to vaccines or any other med. I guess the alternative is worse for everyone though.
I grew up in an anti-vax household and I'm fine, but I DO agree with certain vaccines and I do believe in Over-vaccinating.
So many people worried about a vaccine causing their child to be differently abled but never consider their own drinking water. I get a report every 3 months from my town's water reservoir stating there is too many PPM of (yfkoyffuoch) and is a known carcinogen. Growing up I had a limestone filtered natural spring, but it was never tested for trace minerals.
A. She is amazing and inspiring. I applaud her for speaking up and out, for using her experience to help shine a light on the rarity of such a catastrophic reaction but also to help explain why others NEED to be protected (because otherwise, she, and others who are also immunosuppressed in some way are at an even greater risk of suffering). B. I knew this was about Kat Von D even though I (am assuming) Bored Panda removed the name (though I don't know why)... C. Removing the name from the top but not the follow-up Tweets kinda defeats the purpose of trying to protect an anti-semitic, proudly anti-vaxxer (which, again, I'm not sure why they were trying to do in the first place - fear of being sued or something maybe?).
Glad to see her comments. Guillan Barre is just about the only illness which can be triggered by a vaccine, but the vaccine doesn't cause it. You either have the illness or not. If you do then the first time your immune system has to kick in to fight off a biggish infection then the illness kicks in.
my oldest son became very sick after his first vaccines, we were able to receive free the vaccines made without egg white, still my son became sick my youngest son also became sick after his first, & also his others, they grew out of this problem for their age older vaccines, yes it scared me as a mum, yes I would do it again, people need to be vaccinated, & the saddest thing , if your child is not vaccinated & gets sick & is in touch with other people even if those people are vaccinated they still have a chance of contracting that disease, not as seriously, & the great thing, my child will not be able to spread it to someone else
This is a RARE reaction to a vaccine and statistics and incidence in the medical field addresses this. It does not mean one should suddenly turn " anti-vax". Vaccines do far more good than harm and save lives and quality of life. One incident does not make this an absolute risk for general public or it would be removed from the medical treatments!
Happened to me too. Even though I’m pro vaccines, I don’t think it’s as rare as we are being told. My reaction wasn’t even recorded as a statistic

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rare disorder where the body’s immune system damages nerve cells, causing muscle weakness and sometimes paralysis. While its cause is not fully understood, the syndrome often follows infection with a virus or bacteria. In the United States, an estimated 3,000 to 6,000 people develop GBS each year. Most people recover fully from GBS, but some have permanent nerve damage.
It’s not a good idea to do a TLDR for something you didn’t read hon
Load More Replies...Well there is no cure for stupid. 1 in a million chance? Even the CDC's own numbers showcase how common it is for vaccine injuries. More than 30 children died in a recent 6 in 1 vaccine trial and hundreds were injured. This was from a 3,000+ child clinical trial. The results were so bad they refused to even publish what happened to the kids who came in for follow up vaccinations.
So sad to read. She had her life destroyed by a syringe filled w/ industrial waste ,and yet somehow accepts the brainwashing from the priests in lab coats who molested her !!!??? Even after she admits to the shot giving her all these horrible effects . DOCTORS ARE NOT SCIENTISTS .Blind faith in their propaganda will get your life destroyed. EVERY SHOT PRODUCES HARM.NONE ARE EFFECTIVE .Learn from her mistakes .Don't be a good little mouse .
Whatever. I'm pro-vaccine, but they obviously aren't right for everyone, and she acknowledges that fact.
I don't know where she gets her statistics about being one in a million when the CDC says otherwise. This chick if full of b******t. Her twitter page is nothing but b******t Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rare disorder where the body’s immune system damages nerve cells, causing muscle weakness and sometimes paralysis. Read about the ingredients contained in vaccines before you have them. Read studies from outside the US. Vaxxes are not for everyone. I have had severe reactions to several of them, so I am not for them. I had the real diseases as a kid (measles, chicken pox, whooping cough, etc.) and they uncomfortable but not that bad. The vaxxes nearly killed me-I was in the hospital, so not for me. Since my children and I had such bad reactions, I am not for them, and think each needs to decide what is best for their children and themselves. Also, the idea of herd immunity is a falicy. From statistics and epidemiological studies the effectiveness of such decreases with each iteration of a disease. The only real immunity from having the disease and according to studies the immunity is passed along to your children. This means that my children did to need all of the vaxxes since I passed along real immunity to them.
The immunity after the sickness is no more 'real' than with vaccines. And you can't pass immunity to your children. Please learn the basics.

I'm pro vaccination but anti over vaccination. What openend my eyes is looking how countries around the world vaccinate and the effects on the people. Here in the Netherlands we get 6 shots with tetanus. Last one at age 9. I beleave in the USA your entire life. Tetanus is a great example, it's not contagious. Heck every living human prolably has some kind of tetanus bacteria living on their skin. If you get cut, let it bleed out and clean it. Give yourself a high dose of vitamin C and you are safe. And if you are scared you can even get a shot against the toxic waste te bacteria produces afterwards.
Please don't listen to this uneducated garbage. Tetanus can give your brain damage or even kill you, get vaccinated.

Sorry, becoming a vaccine shill after this experience is SEVERE over-compensation. There are more than enough industry whistle blowers, physicians and health-care workers reporting the lies from Big Pharma about vaccines to throw shade over this Pollyanna Tale. Didja notice? Nature--in the form of diseases and insects-- has a sophisicated way of mutating around the puny measures our dysfunctional profit-driven science comes up with to make us safe. It is a fact that hundreds of millions of people--including me--were put at risk by confident & well-meaning authorities (acting in the name of Science), injecting us with contaminated vaccines that are like ticking lifespan time bombs. Bottom Line: we are not guaranteed of the safety of even the delivery systems of these chemical elixirs, much less the substances themselves. Feelin' lucky punk?
My heart goes out to this young woman but she is sadly extremely misinformed about vaccines and how often GBS occurs as an adverse event. It is not a one in a million chance of happening. I"m not here to debate as I'm sure I'll be attacked by the pro-vaccine crowd, that's how they normally operate, but truth is truth and it's all researchable.

She understands that just because vaccines ruined her life, doesn't mean they will ruin everyone's lives, and that this is a one-in-a-million(literally) side effect. Respect :))) Thank you for sharing this inspiring story.
Load More Replies...a million thanks to her for sharing her story and being honest. i hope no anti-vaxxer furthers her pain by getting her sick. we wish you peace, love, and health.
Load More Replies...I agree that vaccines can help prevent acute disease but can anyone show me a retrospective, comparative study of vaxxed versus unvaxxed to see if vaccines are playing a role in the explosion of chronic illness in today's youth" The only two studies I found do show vaccines are associated with an increase chronic disease. http://vaxx.news/mawsonStudy http://vaxx.news/dtpvaxunvax
Load More Replies...So, vaccinate yourself and your child until you it ruins your life or your child's life. Brilliant.
The best response to a fool is silence. And downvoting.
