53 Photos Of Iran’s Street Fashion That Will Destroy Your Stereotypes
Today, on February the first, we celebrate World Hijab Day. It was first celebrated in 2013 in order to educate the world on what wearing a hijab stands for. More importantly, this day is celebrated in the aim of protecting the right of an individual to wear one, neither forcing them nor banning them.
There's been a lot of controversy regarding hijab law in Iran. The media there is also guilty of portraying Iranian women as sad and powerless. While in some Muslim religion cases this might be true, it is definitely not the most accurate description of a modern Iranian woman and modest fashion.
To deny the stereotype that women wearing a hijab are weak and unhappy, Bored Panda collected a list of Iranian women street fashion photos, depicting them wearing hijabs proudly and simply looking incredible. Most of them come from a Muslim fashion blog called The Tehran Times, the first street style blog from Tehran, Iran aimed at showing the creativity, style and high fashion of young Iranian women.

Simple question to some people commenting here. Do You Support Mandatory Forced On All Women Muslim and Non Muslim!!! Head Covering???
I support the right of a culture to stipulate its boundaries ... and then explore its potentials to revise and when appropriate expand them. Do I think western approaches to dress are better or worse than Iran's? Not necessrily, when I see the pressure on young women to appear atttractive, as deifined by men, in a male dominated meat market.
Load More Replies...If youre fan of Ariana Grande's face or style i can say i knw many iranian girl whom look like her or even look better than her in her type, also the same story about selena gomez!!
Load More Replies..."In Iran women have to cover their hair in public according to the dress rule enforced after the Iranian Revolution in 1979. My Stealthy Freedom is an online social movement where Iranian women share photos of themselves without wearing the hijab." http://mystealthyfreedom.net/en/
Freedom is choice. Only reason she can dress like this if the men in her family allow it. If her father or husband or brother were conservative she woukd not have a choice to walk around like that.

These are students. They forced wearing these clothes -_-
Load More Replies...Sorry, but I've been to Iran. These are models and NOT typical women walking around the streets of Tehran, Iran today in 2017. Maybe they dressed close to the western women's style back in the days of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, but certainly not today under the rule of the Imam. Therefore, this is pure propaganda.
As an Iranian I can tell you it really depends where you go in Iran, James. There are both modern neighborhoods and traditional neighborhoods in every city. I was born and raised in Tehran, and the culture gap is shockingly huge. I see women dressed like this every day, and also women with more religious covers. The point is, there are TWO sides of the same coin, and the media often only shows ONE.
Load More Replies...Well, it kinda is. As a Muslim living in a Muslim country, I can say that wearing black all over is uncommon. In fact, you'd be surprised how westernized we are. Most of us were crop tops, bikinis, booty shorts, and what not.
Load More Replies...I want one of those gorgeous sweaters! They look incredibly comfortable
if I looked this good in a hijab I would wear them all the time just because these are pretty! And I am Baptized!
These scaves are no different than the scareves that women wore a lot in the fifties and sixties, although we werent forced to wear them. ..the Audrey Hepburn look, I think I still have some of those from back then....very pretty.
I have the same Michael Jackson Art in my house in Pennsylvania, USA
OH GOD! SHE'S MY BFF. THIS IS FOR ALMOST A YEAR AGO WHEN SHE WANTED TO HANG OUT WITH OTHER FRIENDS PROBABLY.SHE TOLD ME SOMEONE TOOK A PHOTO OF HER! lol Mehrara you're famous now!
I travelled trough Iran in october last year and saw so many stunning and stylishly dressed woman! The prejudice that all Iranian woman are demure creatures in burqa's could not be further from the truth.
I added a picture from Tehran last year. Reason I took that picture? Because I was amazed at how stylishly they were dressed. No photoshoot, this is how a lot of women in Iran look. Second of all, do they like wearing headscarves? No, a lot of women do not like it but they do try to make the best of the situation. And times are changing. A lot of young women had 'some kind of headscarve' but it merely was a little piece of fabric attached to their hair. I have seen it all, from periwinkle blue hair with a neon scarve to a semi-detached sort of fabric-patch to a von Dutch hat. In the more religious places they dressed more demure, I must say that (but you are not allowed in the Vatican in a bikini either.. just saying). Second of all, it is a regime that is enforcing this rule, not so much 'men opressing women'. Most Iranians that I talked to think that women should be able to decide themselves whether to dress according to Muslim law. Travel the world people..we're not so different.. 01b09ac8d1...34adf7.jpg
Simple question to some people commenting here. Do You Support Mandatory Forced On All Women Muslim and Non Muslim!!! Head Covering???
The "stereotype" is that women in hijab/head covering are oppressed/forced by men to do so (stereotype is not about their look/appearance-whether is fashionable or not). For the women who completely don't want to wear anything on their head, but are forced to cover hair, stereotype = sad reality. :(
Well this article is about Iran and there All women are forced to cover their head. How people can enjoy reading it and watching the photos without thinking about those who from small child need to cover their head, but don't want to.
have to correct some peoples statement here , in iran women are forced to wear hijab its not by their free will . however as you can see they are creative and stylish with it . but hijab is not something they like to wear but they are forced to wear by government .
Great point Rita. Men are also hurt and forced to do things under this regime. Who and what ideology is behind this regime and this situation? What kind of views and beliefs shaping their law and reality? Islamic law, sharia law.. ?
It's not just women that "must" obey the Islamic dress code. If you did some research, you would find that men also have rules for dressing. And they are not "forced" by the religion to dress as the code, they are free to do what they want. They are oppressed by their governments that interpret the code as a law, and in a strict way, not the religion itself.
No - women should feel free to dress as they like. However, I worked in a college with at least 85% newcomers, and some Muslim women wore the hijab and some didn't - there were never any problems with this...
It's a beautiful tradition that adds grace to a woman's poise. Oppression? You probably think that because here in America you're used to a bunch of liberated sluts.
Every culture has their rules, which evolve over time. This includes religious rules. In America, you cannot walk around naked on beaches, and Christian rules are more stringent than people realize. Yet, as times evolve, culture evolves. This is their culture evolving- where headscarves are more decorative- it doesn't even cover the entire head. I'm sure there are oppressive areas- but this seems more culture evolving, rather than oppression.
You can not be a supported and still appreciate the freedom and beauty that these women have found, even if it is within the sad guidelines they are told to obey.
Also- children don't have to cover their head. It depends from family to family when it begins. It becomes a matter of custom and family traditions.
Then why don't you move there? They have public executions on the streets too.
Thank you🙏🏼
Very true that is

They have to dress certain way after women get married, until then it's not as strict, but if you are dressed too revealing, you're assumed to be a prostitute.
I wonder where you find these nonsense facts, the level freedome doesn't change after the marriage.
Aren't you thinking about observant Jews? It's in Orthodox Jewish law that married women are supposed to cover their hair, but not unmarried girls.
What are you talking about?
like in every other coutry...
So most of these photos are fashion shoots. I am aware that fashion photos don't reflect what the general public look like.
I can assure you it's mostly the same as these photos!
Pretty much most women loo6m like this. When I go from the USA and visit I look like a little peasant girl
I am from Iran and my friends and relatives dress like fashions every day! they care about what they eat and wear and it is part of the Iranian culture. When I just moved to Canada I started to dress up very simple! But really missed that life - you shoudl come to Iran to see the real luxury life -the mainstream media just tell lies most of the time-
I do not know Iran or Iranian girls. These are not fashion shots. These are normal daily shots they take to post on their instagram :-).
Sorry wrong sentence: YOU* do not know Iran. :-)
Nope so I actually was there for a month and for the most part this is how most women dress and a few of them do cover up more but for the most part they look like the pictures
Well , this is funny.... I think that you say it because you can't imagine people being that idle to be this stylish for every day life .. and I could not agree more :D But this is what the majority looks like...they put so much effort into looking good and that's fine...and this is the usual picture of the city not fashion shoots :))
You clearly haven't seen them all: most are clearly street photos taken with a smartphone. But hey hold on to your opinion....
I was in Tehran 2 month ago the fashion on the street and at homes are even more modern and almost all young girls are wearing more modern and designer mode then in Europe or Amerika.
You are wrong the do! I would say people are actually even more fashionable. You can always find videos on YouTube or other sources of general public
