17 Y.O. Who Gets Mocked For Calling Her $80 Bag “Luxury” Is Invited To The Headquarters Of The Brand After Clapping Back At Haters
What one considers to be expensive, another person might think is reasonably priced, and it depends on how much money they earn and are used to spending on certain items. If we have different definitions of what is expensive and not expensive, our perception of what is considered luxury also may not be the same.
17 Y.O. Zoe Gabriel was very happy when her dad bought her a Charles & Keith bag, so she filmed a video about it and was excited to unbox her first luxury bag. The video was first met with comments berating Zoe for thinking that it’s luxury, so she responded gracefully, explaining why she used that term, and both videos blew up so much that it even attracted the attention of the brand.

Zoe Gabriel is a Filipina living in Singapore and she recently has been gaining a lot of views on TikTok. It all started with a video in which she was thanking her dad for purchasing her first luxury bag.
The teen got the bag from the Singaporean fashion house label Charles & Keith. Its price is a bit under $100 and people thought that Zoe didn’t really know what a luxury bag meant as the term is usually associated with designer goods that cost thousands of dollars.
The bag was from Charles & Keith and it cost about $80, which may not seem like a luxury for the more fortunate ones, but for Zoe, it was

If we want to get technical and look up the dictionary definitions of what luxury means, you will find that luxury is “a state of great comfort or elegance, especially when involving great expense,” “an inessential, desirable item which is expensive or difficult to obtain,” or “a pleasure obtained only rarely.”
None of the word’s meanings specify a set amount of money you have to spend to be able to say that the item is luxury. Great expense for one person doesn’t necessarily mean the same for another. It truly depends on the perspective.
The teen received so much hate that she needed to explain herself and give people her perspective

The amount of negative comments that Zoe received couldn’t be ignored and she felt that she needed to defend herself. What we found out is that the teen’s family sometimes even considered bread to be a luxury because at times, even food was hard to get.
Knowing that, the teen was very grateful for her that he saved up his hard-earned money and decided to spend it on her. And he didn’t even buy the cheapest thing, but allowed Zoe to choose a Charles & Keith, which cost him $80, which is a big chunk from the family’s budget.
When her family moved to Singapore, they didn’t have a lot of money and sometimes struggled to buy bread

After this video, people started showering Zoe in support and canceled out the negative comments. They agreed that what is considered luxury is subjective and that the other commenters had no right to take away the joy from her of receiving a wanted gift.
The support was so big that even the brand itself noticed it and actually invited Zoe and her dad for lunch and a tour at the Charles & Keith headquarters. In an Instagram post, Zoe wrote “It was so fun, everybody was so nice and accommodating. We had the chance to sit down with Keith and get to know their company a little better.”
Charles & Keith commented on the post, “Thanks for visiting! We were happy to have you and your dad at our HQ office – hope you enjoyed the lunch and had a meaningful experience with us.”
So for her dad to spend $80 on a bag when there are similar ones for cheaper was a luxury for Zoe

A couple of days later Zoe uploaded another unboxing video and this time it was a gift from the brand itself. A note attached to the presents read, “Hope you enjoyed your time at our HQ campus and meeting our founders – we are all so impressed with the grace in how you handled the situation and displaying values that resonate with us greatly. We present you our iconic Gabine bag that we personalised specially for you, and hope that it will remind you of this special moment where you inspired so many others to be kind, compassionate, and confident.”
Once the teen explained what she meant, people flooded her comments with positivity and blew up the videos quite a bit

Zoe’s situation is an example of how people who have less money are mocked for not being able to afford things. She is like the scholarship student whose parents couldn’t afford the school otherwise that is now surrounded by people born with a silver spoon. But she just posted a video that reached an ignorant audience.
Children of parents with low income are more likely to be bullied for not being able to afford food, clothes, new technologies and vacations. Although the problem is not them being poor, but that they are the minority.
A study led by Frank J. Elgar, PhD revealed that “early-life income inequality influences developmental trajectories in ways that is associated with later involvement in bullying (as targets in particular). To our knowledge, this is the first evidence of an association between early-life inequality and adolescent bullying.”
After that, they gifted Zoe two more bags that were personalized specially for her

You can share the excitement of unboxing a new bag with Zoe in the viral video below
@zohtacothank you dad 🥹♬ Glitch – Just audios
But we can say that Zoe’s case is a success story as after she clapped back to the haters, more people came onto her side and encouraged her to enjoy the bag and what it represents, which is her dad’s love. Maybe she also convinced some of the judgemental people to look at the world through her eyes.
We would like to know what you think about the story and the initial response people had. Do you think that the standard for luxury is something you set for yourself or is it a term that has a very specific meaning? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
After the initial negative response, people encouraged Zoe to enjoy her bag and agreed that what is considered luxury is subjective
Some people online can be so cruel! I consider spending 80$ on a bag to be spoiling myself. Therefore, it is a luxury. It is a luxurious bag. You go girl-enjoy your purchase!
What they don't get is "luxury" is subjective, and they should stop ruining her joy! And good for you too @Ba-Na-Na
Load More Replies...I can't even fathom spending that much on a bag. But what is not luxury for some, is luxury for the majority tbh. Shame on the people bullying this girl because "oh you only spend $80 on a handbag I (actually daddy's credit card) spent $800 on my louis vuitton" .. seriously, those people need to just get the hell off the planet.
I have a 40-year-old bag I paid $100 for. I love it still.
Load More Replies...My entire outfit is usually less than 80 bucks. Luxury is relative.
What makes a person happy is not to be trifled with. If she continues to value things that make her happy, she'll have a very nice life.
Load More Replies...Ahh yes here we see the toxicity and jealousy of all the internet. She should be proud and so should her dad. It is something he worked hard for and was finally able to give her. No shame in that at all.
I'm glad people backed her up. Nice people exist. All those haters :( I'm only using BP. Started about a month ago and will see how it goes. Don't want too much of toxic social media.
most people are so nice and amazing here! There's definitely trolls, and spam bots are annoying. (I'm looking at you Sarah Elizabeth). Sometimes people bring politics into stuff that doesn't need to have politics. Sometimes opinions get downvoted which is dumb AF lol. Some of my favorite people on here are Zara and Caro Caro <3
Load More Replies...That girl has a wonderful personality no matter how expensive the gift she was grateful to get it. The other people online who made fun of her are just snobby brats
What the f**k is wrong with people to shitstorm someone because they think their 80$ bag is wonderful? Not to start with that luxury is anyway relative, this is just s****y behavior and all of these haters mother's should be ashamed of what horrible people they set into this world.
Knowing that we live in a society with criminally uneven distribution of resources, people should be more respectful towards those who work hard to earn these joys instead of passing rude comments.
Thing with luxury is that it is different for different people. Example: when I grew up, we kids used every winter to going down ski slopes in some of Swedens best alpine facilites. Luxury? Not for us - the business in the county came together to pay for us youngsters winter sports
It was normal for you, but was still a luxury. If the business didn't step up and you all weren't able to enjoy winter sports you would still have lived comfortably. Still. I'm glad you were able to experience that as a kid, just as I enjoyed surfing and water skiing.
Load More Replies...they should be shaming the people who use credit to purchase expensive bags they can't afford and they are living beyond their means just to say I have a Louis bag!
An $80 bag is 100% luxury... wtf. I can get a servicable one that will last for many years for $30 (or less). Like Ba-Na-Na said above, it's defined as luxury since a perfectly good one is far, far less money.
If you 're going to shame someone, shame the pretend losers who hire luxury goods for an hour to pose for [whatever platform], giving the illusion that they live a life of luxury. $80 bag would be a big spend for me. I could probably afford it now but having grown up without luxuries, you re-evaluate if you don't have the privilege of just dropping cash on a smart bag AND being able to eat.
Paid 40 euro for a bag and think its luxury, its from River Island in dublin and i usually get bag €11 in penneys.... stunning bag and amazing personality you can see come tru in the video 👍
I love her n her story! What a great father who raised a wonderful daughter. And the bag is fire 🔥
Imagine being such a miserable twat that you see a video of a young woman getting her first luxury item that she has been waiting for her whole life... whose dad couldn't afford until now.. she shares the moment with her loving dad.. he takes photos & he's obviously so proud that he can give his daughter something that she's going to love & cherish. She loves it so much that she posts the experience online... then you decide that you're going to try to ruin her experience because you're a privileged person who can drop $80 without it taking away food or necessities for the rest of the week or month... good for you! You have money! Awesome. Most ppl don't have that "luxury." So stfu & go away. I've never spent $80 on a bag cause I can't afford it. THATS A LIXURY! It was a beautiful bag & I love that the company reached out. This was adorable. My dad did this for me when I was 13 & all the girls were wearing Abercrombie. I loved that outfit so much. Don't be a d**k.
People sure can be nasty, can’t they? But, as they say, things happen for a reason, and she wasn’t afraid to stand up for herself and push back the nonsense. Good for her and then she was invited to the brand’s HQ and treated like the queen she is. She’ll go far and who knows what doors will open for her in the future now.
Luxuries are things that go beyond basic needs. Technically fast food, while certainly not fine dining, is a luxury. The bag isn't as expensive as some, but still a luxury item.
Haters gonna hate.... For some of us, Charles and Keith products are luxury. While for some, having every color available Hermes bags are a must. Regardless the price, personally I considered her bag is more than luxury. It's a treasure, a gift of love from her father.
She's 17! I'd be happy to get any bag at that age, $80 would have been a luxury to me. Those trolls are like Kanye, why would you ruin a 17 year old's moment.
My first car (which I am still paying for by the way) cost a good 20k in US dollars. Perhaps for some, it sounds a luxury. For others, it may be nothing big. To me though, it's a symbol of finally standing on my own two feet (still some ways to go but I'm getting there). This may be unpopular, but luxury-gatekeeping is a sh*tty attitude in my opinion. What you consider a regular purchase may be a luxury to some. Just be grateful that you can afford it but also don't be afraid to show pride in finally owning something from your own blood, sweat, tears and pain. That being said, I hope the rest of you get nothing but the best out of life for yourselves as well. Life's too short for any form of gatekeeping.
One of the cruelest things to do is to destroy someones happiness online. What is the point to complain and talk down to someone who got something that made them super happy.
NTA all the way! OP, stay in school, go to college, get good grades, train for a lucrative career, and you can help make your parents’ lives easier, since they love you and sacrificed so much for you. On a more personal note, the only way I can afford luxury clothing and accessory items is when I buy them secondhand—-though they try to make it sound better by calling it “consignment”.
This is about personal values and what really matters in life. Zoe has her head and heart in the right place. Those haters? Not at all. While they're focused on external judgment and showing their "status" with material things, Zoe is appreciating what she has, especially since her dad got it for her as a gift. It means more to her. Zoe for the win!!
Ignore people. Just ignore them. They’re either gold diggers or spoiled brats that make those comments. You do you and be happy. Love your bag ❤️
That bag is very classy. I've seen much more expensive bags that weren't as classic just faddish. You rock it. Great dad you got there.
I understand where she's coming from. Well, I suppose that's not a fair statement. My family and I never went without food but did we have money to drop $80 on a purse? HELLLLLL no. Nowadays, as a woman in her thirties, I rarely pay over fifteen dollars for a purse. This young lady looks so happy and the bag she received is bitchin. Do you, sweetheart 😘 be happy. Your bag looks spacious but don't put any f*cks in there for the haters.
It's so sad that people choose to condemn her definition of "luxury", instead of acknowledging how much she appreciates her dad. There are so many teens these days that have absolutely no appreciation of how hard their parents try to provide for them, and instead is never contented and constantly ask for more. She is so mature that she understands her parents' hardship and is genuinely moved by their action. I hope her dad is super proud of her. I would be proud to have her as my daughter!
Her choice of bag looks lovely and of great quality. 🥰 However, some of the comments below are judgemental of people who do buy designer bags. I’m young, didn’t get any financial help from my parents, don’t have any debts, have my own business, invest a far lot more than I spend and am a property investor but still have lots of designer items. At the same time I visit my grandpa who is a stroke survivor most days of the week. Having designer items does not mean that someone is a bad person or is not actually wealthy and is pretending to be. It’s okay to aspire in life. Personally every time I buy a designer item my business grows, my health gets even better. These items help bring joy to my life not just practicality.
The fact that some people are used to having a personal chef make all their meals and some would consider ANY home cooked meal a luxury shows the disparities but mocking her is just ignorant... and anyone who would mock someone for being overjoyed about ANY gift is a moronic AH.
That is expensive. So are those beats headphones and those docs. Good for her.
Its not the price that makes it a luxury, it's the love that motivated the purchase. The truth is this bag is priceless.
$80 worth of discretionary spending is a luxury for a lot of people, myself included, and I’m 30-something! I hope Zoe enjoys her gifts for a very long time!
Your Luxury might not be someone else’s. I would also consider a $80 bag a luxury. And really does it matter she’s happy let her be don’t down someone’s happiness.
A luxury is something that you don't need. It doesn't matter how much it is, it's just a non-essential. It might also be described as an indulgence.
im not surprised people commented hate messages, $80 for a bag that looks like a plain silicon bucket is beyond ridiculous
I don't understand the haters. To me, luxury is something that you don't normally buy for your self or an experience you don't normally do. It could be something as a $5 bar of scented soap for a treat or getting your nails painted when you normally do it yourself. Or talking a walk at lunch instead of eating at your desk. Or even just sleeping in an extra hour on a day off. Or going out for lunch - even fast food - if you normally brown bag it. It doesn't mean a $5,000 handbag to me.
I'm so happy she got what she wanted. What is luxury to one person may not be the same for another. Purse bullies should just keep quiet.
Comments like that are half the reason some people feel the need to drop a ton of money of useless junk just because it has a brand name on it. Brands like that make enough money without people trying to peer pressure and shame others into buying their products. Would much rather see a story of a young girl ecstatic about the $80 bag her dad got her than a story of someone complaining that the $800 bag they got for a gift was the wrong shade of blue
I've never heard of that brand before, but they are a company I would gladly give my money to after reading this article. Good people do exist.
Great bag. Awesome Dad! But I think you could fit inside the black bag! Enjoy your Dad. He's very special.
I STILL can't afford an $80 bag, but I truly LOVE the $40 purple Liz Claiborne (on clearance) purse my family gave me for mother's day a few years ago. I love the Liz Claiborne brand but have rarely bought anything. Hubby and kids found it on clearance because of a small mark on the bottom. Purple is my favorite color, too. I used that bag until the straps broke. Still have it. It's not about the price. It's about the love of something that someone gave you. Shame on those people who tried to make her feel bad. You'll never understand what it means when someone sacrifices for you.
Good for her! That bag can hold everything a woman might carry. And they can carry a lot. While others are clutching 10000 dollar mini bag that can hold maybe a tube of lipstick, they juggle a phone in the other hand, and an overpriced Frappuccino in the other. 80 bucks and she can fit a phone, a coffee with cup holder, and a taser. Plus it looks awesome.
I recently spent $200 for a computer bag from Best Buy and it still blows my mind. Lol, I definitely think it's fancy
Hey we have the same nationality and name! And I would also say that's luxury because here 80 dollars is like, super expensive. u go girl!
How ignorant some people are. Luxury is subjective. I doubt even one of those bashers can even afford Charles and Keith. Their products have really good quality. Just say you're jealous and move on. Give this kid a break.
"...the founders incited Zoe with her dad for lunch..." OMG HOW RUDE. Why would they incite them?!? lul
OMG to me that is luxury as well. When you have nothing but flour and water to eat, that's when even a $20 handbag becomes a luxury.
I would never spend $80 on a bag! But I'm also not into fashion or brand names. I wear what I like and is comfortable. I would also never be an asshat and tell someone the thing they love and are proud of isn't a luxury! A hot bath is a luxury for some people! Having hot food or clothing they didn't make themselves could be a luxury...my point is until you've walked a mile in someone else's shoes you have no right to judge.
If you can't afford it as a normal expense, then it's a luxury. I hope she enjoys her new bags and her dad is a legend
Some people online can be so cruel! I consider spending 80$ on a bag to be spoiling myself. Therefore, it is a luxury. It is a luxurious bag. You go girl-enjoy your purchase!
