Fans of horror stories and video games are bound to know American writer, H. P. Lovecraft, as his name is pretty much on everything these days: Lovecraftian-this, Lovecraftian-that. A central theme in his works is that learning the truth about the world can drive you mad. But it’s not just knowledge about eldritch beings and uncaring cosmic gods that can shock you! Some jaw-dropping truths are closer to home, much more mundane, and far, far funnier.

That’s where the ‘Technically the Truth’ subreddit comes in. A community of nearly 1.26 million, they dedicate their time to sharing some hilarious examples of things that are technically true but completely unexpected. Check out some of their best posts below, upvote the ones that made you laugh, and be sure to check out their subreddit if you like their content!

People lose their livelihood and vote Trump (or the equivalent for their countries). While we need to move away fossil fuels, we also need to give communities depending on it other ways to survive.

That's what I've always said. Even if climate change if false, fossil fuel have a finite supply, we will run out one day. Plus, wouldn't it be nice to not breath in all that pollution that we know causes cancer.

I remember being taught about 'decision trees' many years ago. It literally makes you look at what happens if you are in error to either agree or disagree with a certain proposition etc. The fact that, as the writer says, there's no down side to this even if wrong should be enough of a reason to pursue green policies..

Until you realise that in order to make renewable work you need more and more batteries. This means strip mining half the planet and using dangerous chemicals so the other half can have "clean" energy. Then you have the added problem of trying to dispose on the poisonous chemicals from the batteries at the end of their life. Not really "clean" energy is it?

If we do not take action, there will be horrible, horrible consequences for every single life form on the planet.

My church youth group leader made the same point about believing in God. You live your life believing in God, being a good person, being kind to others, and enjoying friendship and fellowship at church; if there is no God, it won't matter. You will have lived a good life and won't know that you were wrong, because you are dead.

IF Climate Change is a hoax, overblown, or whatever, the downsides would be the money spent to correct it and legitimatizing bad science. (I DO NOT think it is a hoax or anything, just to be clear.)

Daniel Marsh
Community Member

This is the sort of terrible logic that drives "deniers": the presumption that if it is a product of human activity, it must be evil. If climate change WERE untrue, why would you think that more cardbon dioxide would be unhealthy? If you think of the entire biosphere as a single, fantastically complex chemical reaction, carbon dioxide is the "limiting reactant." More carbon dioxide = more life. The reasons deserts exist isn't because there isn't enough water; it's because to get enough carbon dioxide to survive, plants must give up about 99.9% of their water. Now, here's the good news: Back in the 1990s, the argument AGAINST responding to climate change was THE COST. We were sort of in a race: would we economically develop the developing world before X-number billion people died of hunger, disease, over-population, etc. Governments were talking about spending trillions. Today, electric cars are profitable and solar and wind energy dropped 90% to become cheaper than carbon.

Daniel Marsh
Community Member

To wit: #37 is, "technically plants are farming us by giving us enough oxygen until we decompose, then they can consume us." Actually, what we do for plants is we convert their toxic waste product (oxygen) back into their food (carbon dioxide). And o, yes, the accumulate of oxygen killed off almost all life a couple of billions of years ago, until plants evolved the ability to survive their own waste.

The consequences of being in a state of panic about climate change is making drastic, harmful, unnecessary moves that lead to dire consequences for humanity and the world itself. Overcorrection is as bad as the reverse. For example, the rare earth mining for most "green" tech reliant on batteries is an environmental disaster. Entire villages are exposed to radioactive sludge as a result from the demand of "green tech." So the cost of being panicked about climate change to the point you don't examine the cost is thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of dead Chinese at the very least. Landscapes of blighted and unlivable land for generations to come.

We’ve got a theory that the reason why ‘Technically the Truth’ is so successful is because of the type of humor they use in their posts. Specifically, dad jokes! And who doesn’t love a good dad joke?

Scientifically speaking, dad jokes are bound to have lots of fans because they rarely (if ever) offend anyone by their very nature, comedian Paul Seven told the National Post.

They’re also ‘clean’ and require almost no extra context to get, as The New York Times points out. And the more accessible the jokes, the more fans you’re bound to get. However, comedian Seven also points out that stating the truth can and will offend some folks.

So ‘Technically the Truth’ is somewhere between (technically) the truth and dad jokes, having a ton of fun in the comfortable digital nook it’s carved out for itself.

Rule-wise, the subreddit puts a lot of emphasis on quality. So reposts are out (unless they’re older than 3 months) and you can actually get a temporary ban if you share certain controversial posts again.

The community also incentivizes its members (or ‘truthers’ as they’re known on the sub) to actually make good content and avoid ‘low effort’ and ‘lazy’ statements and titles. And it looks like it’s working because the quality’s great (and the member count proves it).

The reality is however planes regularly fly with dead people, and indeed it's not an emergency. Some companies have a dedicated broom cupboard/locker, most move them+family to first class, some to staff quarters, all struggle. There's interesting articles occasionally. I think the statistic is that at EVERY single (non-corona) moment there's over 100K people in the sky; even if healthy enough to travel, some of them die every day.
