Teacher Shares What Entitled Parents They Get To Deal With And The Screenshots Go Viral
Being a teacher is not for the faint-hearted. The amount of patience, devotion, and time you have to give to kids without ever expecting to get something back is hard to imagine. Add the whole responsibility to carry on one’s shoulders, and you realize the superpowers you need to become one.
And as if that alone wasn’t enough, the pandemic-induced chaos, virtual learning implementation, and pressure to meet the new guidelines have made teaching all the more challenging. Sadly, not everyone seems to be aware of that.
These text messages between an anonymous parent and a teacher have been surfing around the internet and causing a great stir among people. The series of screenshots reveals how insensible a parent can be when mutual understanding is something we need the most in these challenging times. “Do as I ask and we won’t have any issues,” reads the aggressive text, and one can only imagine what insane stuff teachers have to go through every day.
The global pandemic has changed the ways we live, work, and spend our leisure time beyond recognition. Primary and high schools, as well as universities, are no exception, and many institutions were forced to step up and get creative in developing alternative teaching solutions.
A recent study on distance learning from Bellwether Education Partners and Teach For America showed that there’s no single and right way to “perform distance teaching, but the remote learning processes of many districts and charters are similar to in-class instruction.”
The study also showed that there has been more effort from teaching staff to find a connection with families and students, and there’s been much more of a focus on health and safety compared to spring.
However, for many teachers, going online and navigating remote instruction have became quite a challenge. For example, Erin Pinsky of Joel Barlow High School in Redding, Connecticut told The New York Times that moving online was challenging because “not all students were comfortable having their video on during live learning opportunities.”
As a result, the teacher explained, “that reduced lively discussion and made it harder for me as a teacher to read the facial expressions and body language that provide me feedback about how students are progressing in the lesson objectives outside of their academic work.”
But as the second wave of coronavirus is nowhere near the end, teachers may have little choice but to adapt to this rapidly changing instruction environment.
This problem exists in all countries. Parents expect the teachers not only to teach, but also to educate and co-parent their kids. But when teachers discipline a kid for being rude or disruptive, the parents report them to the principal for being unreasonable and biased towards their little angels.
I think probably most parents are reasonable, but there's always going to be at least one problem parent just because people are people.
My both parents are (retired) teachers and, while there are many good parents out there, which is also reflected on the child themselves (regardless of grades), there's also too many parents who are so unaware of the real world and subsequently end up kind of neglecting their kid, who then ends up being problematic, behaviour wise, and by that I mean bothering other children, to the point of serious danger sometimes. Me, on the other hand, when I was in school, if I were told by teachers that their job was also to educate us (in a parental meaning, it doesn't translate well in English), my reaction would be "I already have my parents for that, thanks". It might sound rude, but it was usually the most authoritative ones who insisted they "love us" as their own children.

Hijacking top comment to ask: was there an update floating around the internet on this? How did meeting with principal go?
It is obvious that’s a broken family. Teachers are not therapists or family counselors. The teacher was way too accommodating and should have escalated the issue to the Principal much earlier in the process.
Principals leave it to the teachers to deal with the nutcases. "It's your student and I do not have the time to deal with all the crazy parents."
Not true. Teachers may have 53 in a class to deal with but Principals have hundreds or thousands in the school to deal with. Teachers are the first level of contact.

Wow, nice teacher. If I was in that spot, the only thing that would stop me from nuking the parent would be my job rules.
I was in equal parts: impressed by the teacher's calm and reasonable responses and angered by the mother's self-righteous, high-handed demands. If she wants someone to cater to to her wants, get a private teacher. And pay them accordingly.
I'll give good odds that that Karent (great word!) has voted against every tax increase that might up the school budget or cover increased pay for teachers.

I guess my question is why the parent is so freaked out if her husband is contacted. What's going on in that home?
Right? She sounds extremely jealous. She’s probably one of those women who freaks out on any other women who even looks in her husband’s direction. that’s what I gathered from it.
This comment has been deleted.
She sounds abusive towards her husband. He should get out - for that reason and because she's obviously failing at one of the most basic responsibilities of being a parent. She's being neglectful and child welfare authorities should get involved.
I'm familiar with family dynamics that signal a very serious issue, both personally and via my work. This behavior? .... Red flag. If it is a pattern across ehr life, then there's a big red flag. The fact she is so worried about the teacher speaking to her husband could also indicate HE abuses HER, and will blame her if he is bothered again... There's more than one way to spin it.
I am forever thankful to my Trigonometry teacher. I had a terrible Algebra teacher, and didn't have the foundation needed for Trig. She stayed after school with me once a week for the entire school year. I think I only got Cs in that class because I was sincerely trying. And she was so kind, that I actually wanted to try. Most classes I didn't care about, but I wanted to do well in her class because she cared.

I always said if I ever leave the teaching profession, it will only be because of some parents. What this teacher shows in those texts, is what we all see on a daily basis.
That's how my mother felt about teaching. She could hang the students all day long, it was the other teachers and parents that were a problem for her.

Daughter of a retired teacher and I think this behavior from a parent is ridiculous, but not surprising. Some people expect the teacher to do all the work while they sit up and complain. It's the parent's job to make sure that the child is prepared and participating in school.
Once again, and I know I'm a broken record BUT STOP THE KAREN S**T! I'm so done with it. My name is Karen and I'm tired of being abused about it. I'm tired of people calling me a racist. I'm tired of people making the joke about calling the manager. I can't complain when I have a legitimate complaint. And don't even go to the "see you're being a Karen". This is bullying and I'm not having it anymore.
I wish people would stop using that meme because it's really not that funny anymore, if it ever was.
Thanks Deanna. I always see you as a voice of reason and kindness here. Viviane, as well.
I agree 100% with you. It is mean, nasty, and for some people it legitimizes misogyny.
For me, IT'S RACIST. See definitions above in my post.
And thanks, to most of the Pandas here. The people that I see post on a frequent basis don't use the meme.
I think of you every time I see that now, and I use different wording. I’ve seen you leave some really kind comments on here and in general I think it’s that thing where people think engaging in stereotypical intermediate school behaviour is a substitute for doing actual social justice work. I’ve stood up to an abusive fellow customer twice (both of whom were men!!!) It was scary and I wasn’t sure what to say. Whereas saying “Karen” on the internet is something people can do without having to feel uncomfortable. And mocking people who happen to be called Karen but aren’t provoking anyone is stupid. I’m sorry you’re dealing with dumbasses.

I agree. Aside from putting stereotypes on people it's now also an old and lazy joke.
You’re being a total Karen.
I agree with you. I also see this as an opportunity to increase my vocabulary. www.thesaurus.com is a good source.
okay karen
Same! My friends keep telling me I'm the "good" kind of Karen, but even that is offensive. I'm so sick of this! 100% with you, Louloubelle.
I sympathize with you. It started with good intentions, but now people are just using it to be misogynistic and bullying.
Good intentions? I very much disagree. A common name for mature women was specifically chosen. Could have gone with “nasty customer” or stuck with “I need to speak the manager”. It’s like how the name Becky was also being used to generalize women that “take” men. It’s just another way people twist valid arguments and make them divisive. People get bullied simply for their name.

Karen [kəˈren] NOUN 1.a member of an indigenous people of eastern Burma (Myanmar) and western Thailand. 2.the language of the Karen, probably Sino-Tibetan. ADJECTIVE 1.relating to the Karen or their language. The Urban Dictionary definition is a middle-aged white woman. So, either way, it's very racist to call someone a Karen. Needs to stop!!!
Teachers deserve a pay raise simply for the asshat parents they have to deal with.
Teachers deserve pay raises for so many reasons, this being just one of them.
The Teacher is doing their job, it' the parent who refuses to participate.
As a teacher, this inordinate amount of rudeness/entitlement is thankfully rare.
True. But it only takes one to ruin your day.
So true... so sadly true.

Lmao, doesn’t get kid prepared for school, doesn’t respond to messages from teacher but also doesn’t want teacher contacting the husband.
Good grief, talk about needing supernatural levels of patience. And people wonder why so many teachers quit after their first year on the job.
It is the teachers job to teach the subject but as a parent you must teach responsibility and pass down other knowledge as well. Being a parent IS to be a teacher! Other teachers are there for the subjects you don't know about. If you are unwilling to teach your child if they need you... Well. Is it a doll or a human being?
my son is straight A's in school and always helpful in class. But when this all started he called it Spring break and "forgot" his google classroom login for weeks. All his friends ratted him out to the teacher. He still doesnt like doing schooling at home but is good in school
Some students need the discipline of a classroom, so don’t do well left on their own—-even if they have a schedule of online classes to sign into.
I admire how calm the teacher is. ☺️
I've taught 20 years and only experienced that level of foolishness once or twice. Don't feel sorry for the teacher, feel sorry for the kid. The teacher will be fine. Btw, most parents I deal with with have been great!
Me at first: "And she's also paranoid about her husband talking to another woman?" Me after reading her nonstop childish vomit: "I really hope that poor guy has another woman to talk to."
I wouldn’t have the patience to restrain myself from telling the parent to sod off.

I really wish people had to be licensed to have children. There are so many people who have no business being parents. I seriously hope the principal straightened her and her entitlement out.
I see your point, but parental licensing may have too much in common with eugenics for me to be on board. Who would be in charge of licensing?
They have it for adoption and the foster system already, we could use that criteria
I kind of see where you're coming from but nonetheless, I strongly disagree. Having children is a basic, fundamental right as a human and taking that away is, by definition, inhumane. A better option might be to educate parents better.
lol ... what would be the criteria to obtain the licence ?
Look up Zdogg MD, he has a funny animoji about a teacher who is trying to work and having to be tech support for 5 year olds while parents just do what they want.

You think maybe most of the parents are trying to work their own jobs to put food on the table, or helping siblings, and not just doing “what they want”?
The teacher has a job to do as well and it does not include making sure one student is up and ready for class.

Katchen Good response!
Everything you need to know about that parent in five words, "I am not her teacher"... sorry but all parents should try to be, as a minimum, their child's teacher.
When my son started having issues at school via inline education, I became involved. The transition from physical to virtual education was rough. There’s no reason a teacher should be harassed as such. Yes they teach subjects at school but it is my responsibility as a parent to teach commitment, structure, and plain common sense. My son’s teachers were amazing and I am grateful for having helped my son. Thank you to all teachers.
OMG I have this exact problem. It has caused such a nightmare that I have chosen to step down as (teaching) Principal and move to another school to escape this toxic parent.
The do not call the Father, sounds a lot more like...not wanting to be busted for not ensuring the child is ready for class, present in class or keeping up with class, which in her own words was her role. A child not being present over and over when home scooling is going on seems like something very wrong is going on.
It's it normal to have a teacher's personal number to text them?
Some parents want the teacher to have their phone number so that they can keep track of how the kid is doing.
I've never texted a teacher or heard of it in my life. If I get calls from a teacher is always says private, or the name of the school board on call display.
As a former teacher, I can attest to the fact that the accusations from the parent are unfortunately too real. Some parents only want to get involved when their children get poor grades. They then quickly jump to blame the teacher, regardless of whether the child has actually attended school or completed the work. We are in a pandemic. If a student is learning from home and a parent is also at home, then it's the responsibility of the parent to ensure that the child is on the computer, on-task, and doing the work. If the parent is not home during the day, the parent should at least check with teachers once or twice a week. The teacher in this post is at least fortunate she had administrative support. Not every teacher is so lucky. All too often a parent complains, and the principal again blames the teacher.
It sounds like the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. The mom doesn't do her responsibility and neither does the kid.
My niece has been a teacher for more than 10 years. She use to love it so much. But with pandemic and online education situations, she has just about had it with crap. She gave out her personal Cell number, so parents could contact her about her children's schooling. She now gets phone calls at 2 am on Saturdays, as well as calls from angry, screaming and usually drunk parents at all hours of day and night. Drunken fathers making indecent propositions at least twice a week. It's just ridiculous, she's thinking about quitting and getting a job at Costco. And I really think she should because it will be more money and less stupidity to deal with.
I was with the parent at the "it's your job to teach" and then lost her when it was shown that child isn't even logged on every day lol. I say this because my kids are back IN school and my son has ONE teacher that when he asks for help with something he's struggling in the teacher waives him off and says "You should know this" So yea momma bear came out. I told the teacher straight up, you wanna email me when he's failing but not before like when he's in danger of failing. I admitted my weakness in the subject (math) and asked for a compromise. He needs to be patient and address questions because that's his job and I will ensure that my child accepts the help and goes to tutoring etc (utilize his resources) but this idiot literally asked the teacher to come to the house? Lol and what was that business of not talking to the husband? Someone has major trust issues. lol
That parent has a lot of issues.
These are the type of parents who do not have children, they have accoutrements to their life style. This parent was raised without a sense of responsibility or decency. She is lazy and rude and totally without any redeeming qualities. In addition, she is either the second wife, having cheated with her current husband when he was married to someone else and, thus, only had a child to "cement" the marriage or she is just terribly insecure about him. Regardless, she is not worth the effort to spit on if she were on fire.
Hope this parent doesn’t get hold of this screen shot conversation being shared..can’t imagine the fury she’d make the poor teacher
My wife is a teacher and this text message exchange rings very true. I don't know if its the general stress of lockdown that brings out the worst in some people or if certain parents are just super entitled these days.
Both and then some.
Nature vs nurture. Sadly I think this girl got the short end of the stick on both accounts.
It is sad because it is true. I have a lawn service and it is impossible to green up a lawn that the customer will not water. It doesn't matter how tall or short I cut it. It doesn't matter how much fertilizer I put on it. The lawn needs water. On the other side of the coin, I occasionally get asked to cut it shorter because it is growing so fast. Cutting the lawn at 3/4 of an inch instead of 1 inch will not prevent the 3 inches of growth during the week. Anyone using metric... same principle still applies.
She is teaching her daughter that everything is someone else's fault. What a great attitude to teach her kid that will bring them far in life.
I love my teachers :'D
I'm disappointed with the foul language used in this article. Someone didn't listen to the teachers that taught them manners.
Parents should instill manners, not teachers.
I agree that the teacher needs to contact the parent if the student is not logging on and completing their schoolwork... But once the parent knows, then they need to light a fire under the child... Unfortunately not all schools bother to keep track of their students or even talk to them...
The parent needs to get mad at their country’s government instead of taking it out on the easiest target. It IS shitty that working parents have this extra thing on their plate, but they’re in that situation because of how their leaders are handling the pandemic, not because of the teacher who did everything possible.
Omg I would never dream of being so disrespectful to a teacher. While clearly informed of the child's failure to comply with basic attendance and school work requirements too, I would be so embarrassed. The teacher is extremely professional and kind, I hope she finds reward in her other students...
Yeah, my aunt is a teacher in Canada, and she had some really bad students and parents. There was one parent who was doing her kids homework then acted surprised when her kid failed the test.
Same! I had a mom come in to see me because her son failed the history exam and she was flabbergasted, saying "but I studied everything and learned all the topics!" and I was "yes, dear, but did HE study everything and learn all the topics?". The answer was no.
Mi Shield good
There's not much hope for a kid being raised by such a disfunctional parent.
A Good response!
The poor child will do badly in school, because her mother completely failed to teach her any form of work ethic. I feel very bad for her.
That text conversation was very telling. The child is failing school because the mother is a failure in life..
I would love to see the sequel.

This lady is nuts! If I were that teacher I’d make it my personal goal to have that kid kicked out of school. She’s going to grow up to be just like the insecure stupid mom.
The child hasn’t submitted one assignment or gone to one class, the mom didn’t even know and yet the teacher is lazy. Okay.
Her child hasn’t gone to one class or submitted one assignment, the mom didn’t even one and yet the TEACHER is lazy. Okay.
Parents need to start being parents. You had kids. Do what it takes to get the job done and stop blaming others for your failure with your own kids. Parents are supposed to teach their children also.
I literally wanted to punch that idiot in the face while reading. That teacher has a patience of gold :D
Part of the problem is so many people feel it's only the teachers job to teach their kids...no, as a parent who works full time, it is my primary job to make my kids grow into adults, and become productive members of society. It's ultimately a reflection on me and my job how my kid turns out, not the school...the teachers provide the information, i am here to break it down and make sure my child retains that info
My room mate has been teaching elementary school for 20 years. He has never been so ready to retire and/or switch professions. The health issues (high blood pressure, stress eating, drinking liquor and smoking) that are coming with the job these days are not worth it.
This parent get's put on the "Jackass Wall of Shame"
As an early educator often mistaken for a babysitter...all this and more. I really feel for this teacher, make no mistake. AND those of us teaching and caring for younger children get all this as well - with half the pay, longer hours, no benefits and precious little respect.
All children deserve good parents, but not all parents deserve children.
Lazy mother. During the pandemic, I became a teacher, a chef, a housekeeper, an after-school program aid while juggling with Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, etc as a student. Don't come with that BS that teachers have to do your job as parents or that it's hard. Of course it's hard, but when has it been easy to be a parent? Start doing your job.
Oh wow, she literally said she's uncomfortable with her calling the husband, she must've had issues before with the husband. She can't be blaming the teacher on everything. You think the teachers like doing this virtual stuff?? I am sure they are annoyed by it as well, and would rather have the kids in class, but everyone is trying to be SAFE!! All she is caring about is her job!! Grow up parent!! And get after your child not the teacher, if my kids were failing, I would get after then and make sure they are turning in their work, I would not blame the teacher!!
As a former teacher and partner of someone with a middle schooler who used to be an exceptional student before distance learning I don’t think either the teacher or the parent here are completely without fault. Yes, distance learning now requires parents to do the classroom management but how feasible is that for single parents and parents who both have to work during the day, or who cannot afford the resources and time to provide the vital instruction that cannot be achieved with online classes? Teachers do need to adjust their expectations and criteria for grading when it is possible. The parent here also is not taking responsibility and adjusting what they typically do when it comes to making sure their child is in class or completing assignments. The parent also must respond to attempted communication from the teacher. Teachers in general need to take the circumstances of the child’s household into account and not just check give them a low marks or incompletes for missing work.
I thank God I have a great relationship with my 10th grader's teachers. They know my expectations of them and I know their expectations in order for my son to be successful. And further more, my son knows mine and each of his teachers expectations.
This is better than Netflix
It's how the system works. Almost no one noticed a very important thing the parent said. "Work" she has to work, and she doesn't have time to be a parent so she expect the teacher to be the parent while she's working. I don't blame the mother. I blame the system. The system failed us, but we keep blaming each other!
Wow. So much entitlement on the part of the mother! She needs to accept that parenting is often difficult and inconvenient, When you bring a child into the world, THIS is what YOU sign up for. Kudos to the teacher for keeping it so polite and professional,
Notice the do not contact Husband part? Probably ex-husband and a perfect example of why our society has deteriated to the point it has. Single Mothers raising children and haven't got the time to responsibly parent. Not all mind you, but most. Our Government policies of breaking down the Family unit by making single Parents the norm instead of the opposite.
I mean, I agree that society has deteriorated but what would you have instead, parents staying together in a miserable life "for the kids"? That usually makes the kids even more miserable.
So you "don't have time for her and all this work"... You do not deserve to be a parent. I know a mother who has six children and all her children are well mannered and educated. One of them is an actual genius. And she works. Just like the rest of the world. You need to reevaluate your time management. Teaching starts with the parents and continues with those who take on the role of teaching. Dealing with children that parents have not taught to be respectful and to listen. My advice is make time for your child(ren) or is your seed not worth your time and attention? I said what I said. IDC
Sounds like someone shouldn't have had a kid. Like people that get a dog then don't have time for it...
Sounds like someone shouldn't have had a kid. Hope she doesn't have a dog...
The fact that the parent said that she doesn’t have time to keep up with her own kid and yet she’s worrying about the teacher having private conversations with her husband should say it all
A parent who "does not have the time" to do any basic child rearing, need not complain about the teacher. If the child can't get herself to her computer, then her parents most certainly can take on this responsibility. It is NOT the teachers job to get a child to the place where she can start her day of schooling. The parent feels entitled, she feels so falsely. There are no such entitlements or privileges. Had I not got my tail out of bed and walked to my computer in my house to start my school day, the next day I would certainly remember why it was a necessity for my now red tail. Parent, will you blame her corporation when she gets fired for not showing up for work?
Paren't
I feel the frustration, but posting this to social media could cost the teacher her job. If you don't think this shameless parent wouldn't use this?

Shane Henry what
The day I get a message like that will be the day I quit teaching for good. I'm a teacher, not their mother, and f I didn't birth them, I ain't raising them!
Horrible parents aside, many admirably UN-entitled Moms and Dads simply don't know that they, too, CAN teach. Once, in the context of an English-as a-second-language program, I got a nine-year-old to tutor her mother in English. I didn't realize I had it in me either until I was 19.
Typical single Mother whom doesn't want the ex-husband contacted. Our Government policies at work contributing to the break down of the Family unit and societies pitiful state of affairs
I don’t think you can blame the government for this woman being an obvious bitch.
We pay school taxes for a reason! Parents job when it comes to education is make sure they are going and have the supplies needed. Teaching is the sole responsibility of the school system. Teachers have grown to behave like they are just there to moderate, aka baby sit. When teachers actually start teaching, than they’ll deserve above minimum wages
I think you meant "minimum wages". But if you personally want a "minimum wedgie", I know a few teachers that can help out with that at minimum for sure. Bro, "minimum wedges", your poor kid ain't got a very good start at life with your help that's for sure! By the way ain't isn't a real word but I'm pretty sure you know that, right?
Well, it's your kid, it's not my duty to raise them. If you're raising an irresponsible brat whose fault is it?
Child protective services should be called. Parents are held responsibile for making sure their children receive an education. The mother and father are failing at that. (The father sounds like the victim of controlling behavior, which is abuse, but he's also responsible for getting the daughter to her online classes and for doing her work.)
If the child had just not shown up at school and had done no work since August when classes were in person, the parents would have already been contacted by the authorities - at least in the US as of 15 or so years ago. Maybe laws have changed and it's okay to not send your child to school now?
This was during quarantine measures, many schools were not counting attendance.
I’d beat a kid for not logging in and doing homework. Every year I sent a note to their teachers noting that my kids knew what I expected of them and to let me know if they didn’t deliver. Punishment was medieval. I also told my kids that if there was a problem at school, I would listen but tend to believe school staff. My now-grown kids are stellar humans and I wasn’t a helicopter parent.
You would beat your child for not logging in and doing homework. Beating a child and medieval punishment should be reported to Child Support Services. Sadly, sometimes the school is the child's last defense against abusive parents as teachers are the first to notice bruises and other signs of physical abuse. If you tell a teacher you are beating your child they are legally mandated to report you.

Julie C Rose like

Calling someone a 'Karen" was NEVER with good intentions. It was started by black people to degrade white women !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stop calling people Karen. IT's racist ! Karen [kəˈren] NOUN 1.a member of an indigenous people of eastern Burma (Myanmar) and western Thailand. 2.the language of the Karen, probably Sino-Tibetan. ADJECTIVE 1.relating to the Karen or their language. Urban Dictionary meaning= middle aged white woman
Joanne Haywood easy
This comment is hidden. Click here to view.

Mother: Not my fault my child's not logged on the computer, You are the teacher, take care of it. Mother: Not my fault my child's not logged on the computer, You are the teacher, take care of it.
