Teacher Shares What Entitled Parents They Get To Deal With And The Screenshots Go Viral

Being a teacher is not for the faint-hearted. The amount of patience, devotion, and time you have to give to kids without ever expecting to get something back is hard to imagine. Add the whole responsibility to carry on one’s shoulders, and you realize the superpowers you need to become one.

And as if that alone wasn’t enough, the pandemic-induced chaos, virtual learning implementation, and pressure to meet the new guidelines have made teaching all the more challenging. Sadly, not everyone seems to be aware of that.

These text messages between an anonymous parent and a teacher have been surfing around the internet and causing a great stir among people. The series of screenshots reveals how insensible a parent can be when mutual understanding is something we need the most in these challenging times. “Do as I ask and we won’t have any issues,” reads the aggressive text, and one can only imagine what insane stuff teachers have to go through every day.

The global pandemic has changed the ways we live, work, and spend our leisure time beyond recognition. Primary and high schools, as well as universities, are no exception, and many institutions were forced to step up and get creative in developing alternative teaching solutions.

A recent study on distance learning from Bellwether Education Partners and Teach For America showed that there’s no single and right way to “perform distance teaching, but the remote learning processes of many districts and charters are similar to in-class instruction.”

The study also showed that there has been more effort from teaching staff to find a connection with families and students, and there’s been much more of a focus on health and safety compared to spring.

However, for many teachers, going online and navigating remote instruction have became quite a challenge. For example, Erin Pinsky of Joel Barlow High School in Redding, Connecticut told The New York Times that moving online was challenging because “not all students were comfortable having their video on during live learning opportunities.”

As a result, the teacher explained, “that reduced lively discussion and made it harder for me as a teacher to read the facial expressions and body language that provide me feedback about how students are progressing in the lesson objectives outside of their academic work.”

But as the second wave of coronavirus is nowhere near the end, teachers may have little choice but to adapt to this rapidly changing instruction environment.

And this is what people had to comment

This problem exists in all countries. Parents expect the teachers not only to teach, but also to educate and co-parent their kids. But when teachers discipline a kid for being rude or disruptive, the parents report them to the principal for being unreasonable and biased towards their little angels.

I think probably most parents are reasonable, but there's always going to be at least one problem parent just because people are people.

It is obvious that’s a broken family. Teachers are not therapists or family counselors. The teacher was way too accommodating and should have escalated the issue to the Principal much earlier in the process.

I was in equal parts: impressed by the teacher's calm and reasonable responses and angered by the mother's self-righteous, high-handed demands. If she wants someone to cater to to her wants, get a private teacher. And pay them accordingly.

I am forever thankful to my Trigonometry teacher. I had a terrible Algebra teacher, and didn't have the foundation needed for Trig. She stayed after school with me once a week for the entire school year. I think I only got Cs in that class because I was sincerely trying. And she was so kind, that I actually wanted to try. Most classes I didn't care about, but I wanted to do well in her class because she cared.

Daughter of a retired teacher and I think this behavior from a parent is ridiculous, but not surprising. Some people expect the teacher to do all the work while they sit up and complain. It's the parent's job to make sure that the child is prepared and participating in school.

The do not call the Father, sounds a lot more like...not wanting to be busted for not ensuring the child is ready for class, present in class or keeping up with class, which in her own words was her role. A child not being present over and over when home scooling is going on seems like something very wrong is going on.

It is the teachers job to teach the subject but as a parent you must teach responsibility and pass down other knowledge as well. Being a parent IS to be a teacher! Other teachers are there for the subjects you don't know about. If you are unwilling to teach your child if they need you... Well. Is it a doll or a human being?

When my son started having issues at school via inline education, I became involved. The transition from physical to virtual education was rough. There’s no reason a teacher should be harassed as such. Yes they teach subjects at school but it is my responsibility as a parent to teach commitment, structure, and plain common sense. My son’s teachers were amazing and I am grateful for having helped my son. Thank you to all teachers.

As a former teacher, I can attest to the fact that the accusations from the parent are unfortunately too real. Some parents only want to get involved when their children get poor grades. They then quickly jump to blame the teacher, regardless of whether the child has actually attended school or completed the work. We are in a pandemic. If a student is learning from home and a parent is also at home, then it's the responsibility of the parent to ensure that the child is on the computer, on-task, and doing the work. If the parent is not home during the day, the parent should at least check with teachers once or twice a week. The teacher in this post is at least fortunate she had administrative support. Not every teacher is so lucky. All too often a parent complains, and the principal again blames the teacher.

Part of the problem is so many people feel it's only the teachers job to teach their kids...no, as a parent who works full time, it is my primary job to make my kids grow into adults, and become productive members of society. It's ultimately a reflection on me and my job how my kid turns out, not the school...the teachers provide the information, i am here to break it down and make sure my child retains that info

It is sad because it is true. I have a lawn service and it is impossible to green up a lawn that the customer will not water. It doesn't matter how tall or short I cut it. It doesn't matter how much fertilizer I put on it. The lawn needs water. On the other side of the coin, I occasionally get asked to cut it shorter because it is growing so fast. Cutting the lawn at 3/4 of an inch instead of 1 inch will not prevent the 3 inches of growth during the week. Anyone using metric... same principle still applies.

My niece has been a teacher for more than 10 years. She use to love it so much. But with pandemic and online education situations, she has just about had it with crap. She gave out her personal Cell number, so parents could contact her about her children's schooling. She now gets phone calls at 2 am on Saturdays, as well as calls from angry, screaming and usually drunk parents at all hours of day and night. Drunken fathers making indecent propositions at least twice a week. It's just ridiculous, she's thinking about quitting and getting a job at Costco. Cell phones have really raised expectations about access to ludicrous levels. Folks, if a professional is kind enough to give you their cell phone number, politeness dictates you only call it during business hours, and if outside of that, only in a true emergency.

I was with the parent at the "it's your job to teach" and then lost her when it was shown that child isn't even logged on every day lol. I say this because my kids are back IN school and my son has ONE teacher that when he asks for help with something he's struggling in the teacher waives him off and says "You should know this" So yea momma bear came out. I told the teacher straight up, you wanna email me when he's failing but not before like when he's in danger of failing. I admitted my weakness in the subject (math) and asked for a compromise. He needs to be patient and address questions because that's his job and I will ensure that my child accepts the help and goes to tutoring etc (utilize his resources) but this idiot literally asked the teacher to come to the house? These are the type of parents who do not have children, they have accoutrements to their life style. This parent was raised without a sense of responsibility or decency. She is lazy and rude and totally without any redeeming qualities. In addition, she is either the second wife, having cheated with her current husband when he was married to someone else and, thus, only had a child to "cement" the marriage or she is just terribly insecure about him. Regardless, she is not worth the effort to spit on if she were on fire.

Even more pathetic is the part about the husband. There is obviously a HUGE issue regarding this parent and her husband. What is the point she’s trying to make with comments about contacting the husband? Is she so sure that he husband is a giant scumbag who is only faithful because when has no conversation with other women, ever? Not to mention that she’s more worried about her husband being involved in an “inappropriate” conversation with that she glosses over the facts that the husband didn’t do anything about the student’s poor attendance and that the husband was only contacted because she was unreachable. She’s all about explaining what the teacher is paid to do, but seems oblivious to her responsibilities as the parent.

As a teacher. I can confirm that we often deal with this kind of parents. We have to reply their impolite conversation with poker face. We have to deal with it as if we have done it for thousand times. A lot of parents do not realize that they are the first educator and the primary educator for their kids. Teachers takes only portion of children education. Parents has greater responsibilities to their children mote their teachers do.

So you "don't have time for her and all this work"... You do not deserve to be a parent. I know a mother who has six children and all her children are well mannered and educated. One of them is an actual genius. And she works. Just like the rest of the world. You need to reevaluate your time management. Teaching starts with the parents and continues with those who take on the role of teaching. Dealing with children that parents have not taught to be respectful and to listen. My advice is make time for your child(ren) or is your seed not worth your time and attention? I said what I said. IDC

The parent needs to get mad at their country’s government instead of taking it out on the easiest target. It IS shitty that working parents have this extra thing on their plate, but they’re in that situation because of how their leaders are handling the pandemic, not because of the teacher who did everything possible.

Karen's very insecure about her marriage. Seems like a portion of the call was her warning teacher off of hubby. K-Parent is also very controlling and expects everyone to follow her orders. It's probably worked well in the past, but she's obviously getting worse.

This concept or perception that the parent in this exchange exhibits is, IMHO, one of the most prevalent problems in society today; that so many people think that they have it worse then others and that as such, they have to right to demand things. Even worse, this weird perception of being downtrodden or having the moral high ground new titles them to tell others how they should behave, what they “must” do, and impugn their work or attitude to conform.

"I don't have the time to keep up with her and all this work!" Really??!!!! That's your JOB Mom!!!! Why the heck did you have children if you didn't want to take care of them and help them??! Can't you give up a hair appointment or manicures for your child's sake? She's YOUR flesh and blood!! To neglect her this way is unconscionable! if you're a working mom, rearrange your schedule; it can be done. My husband & I couldn't afford a car for her when she was 16. When she was 18 and started community college, we still couldn't. So every weekday, I got up at 5:30, got dressed & ready for work, drove her 25 miles to campus, then went to my 8AM job. Due to his hours, her dad couldn't do the AM, so in the afternoon, he'd go pick her up and bring her home. We did this until she was working and we were finally able to help her buy a car. Was it easy? NO way! I mostly got home around 7PM & was exhausted. But we have no regrets. She's now a working mother and we are very proud of her.

Any teacher who shares their personal phone number with parents or students is asking for trouble. It's a terrible idea, and no good can come of it. I NEVER gave mine out when I was a teacher, nor did I ever call a parent. The school provided me with a work email address, and all communication was done through this channel. Everything on record and above board. And all business conducted during business hours.

I once taught a child who was so entitled that he never did any work. His mother told the principal this was because I, as a teacher, did not "inspire" him to work, so it was my fault. Never mind that her child ran around the class, bullied other kids, etc. In high school parents were sued when their little darling hurt another child during a football game, and had to pay $$$. The last I heard about the family, the child (now adult) had been killed in gang-related violence.

Clearly the mother is super insecure about her husband talking to Ms.Jackson..(is she nasty?JK.) So they don’t want to have any communication with the teacher but the child is failing. Poor kid, it’s the parents who are failing. You teachers are badass if this is a normal thing. You definitely don’t get paid enough to deal with this kind of BS.

I am a teacher , and put a card in the suggestion box ‘ we need to start failing the parents’. Kid comes in regularly, with homeork finished, in clean uniform, teeth. Rushed, hair combed..... ‘ congratulations mom you earned a $2/hr raise at work’ - mom if you fail... we we take $2/hr... actually. $4 Employees get 2 paid days off of work every month so they can observe their kid in class, and assist the teacher(not mandatory),

When I was a kid if you couldn’t do the work you “flunked “ the grade & suffered the social stigma associated with it. Kids nowadays know that if they just show up & stay out of trouble they’ll get a high school diploma & will apply for jobs claiming to be “educated”. And we sincerely wonder why other countries surpass us in academia.

I don't like dealing with texts anyway - it is an even more intrusive demand for dialogue than the telephone. I've seen fellow teachers get abused by call and text. You’re not the teacher you’re the parent so start parenting! In the end the adult a child lives with is responsible for making sure that child goes to school. Not the teacher! If you don't make sure your child attends school regularly, you may be brought to court on a civil violation.

Teachers deserve the highest pay of any career. Not only do they have to "babysit" or "raise" their students, while following a curriculum, they have have to put up with twice that many parents if the child isn't doing well. They are teachers, counselors, social workers, ect.... It is absolutely ridiculous that a teacher is held responsible for a failing child. Sure , there are some sh**y teachers, but something has made them that way, in my opinion. Why would one pay all that money to go to school for 4 years and do their student teaching just to not care and be a sh**y teacher? Parents need to take time out of their day to spend time with their child. Ask questions. See what they can do to help if the student is having a hard time. Communication is key, not only between the parent and teacher but between the parent and child and the child and the teacher. If you was to look as if you have a happy family, without the responsibilities, borrow your sister's child for the day.

As a former teacher and partner of someone with a middle schooler who used to be an exceptional student before distance learning I don’t think either the teacher or the parent here are completely without fault. Yes, distance learning now requires parents to do the classroom management but how feasible is that for single parents and parents who both have to work during the day, or who cannot afford the resources and time to provide the vital instruction that cannot be achieved with online classes? Teachers do need to adjust their expectations and criteria for grading when it is possible. The parent here also is not taking responsibility and adjusting what they typically do when it comes to making sure their child is in class or completing assignments. The parent also must respond to attempted communication from the teacher. Teachers in general need to take the circumstances of the child’s household into account and not just check give them a low marks or incompletes for missing work.

A parent who "does not have the time" to do any basic child rearing, need not complain about the teacher. If the child can't get herself to her computer, then her parents most certainly can take on this responsibility. It is NOT the teachers job to get a child to the place where she can start her day of schooling. The parent feels entitled, she feels so falsely. There are no such entitlements or privileges. Had I not got my tail out of bed and walked to my computer in my house to start my school day, the next day I would certainly remember why it was a necessity for my now red tail. Parent, will you blame her corporation when she gets fired for not showing up for work?

Primary problem with handling this so professionally, is that it does not teach the parent a THING about their misdeeds, effectively dooming the child to perpetuating them. People like this need to at least register the caliber of their transgression, and this teacher achieved precisely the opposite by enabling the karent. Child protective services should be called. Parents are held responsibile for making sure their children receive an education. The mother and father are failing at that. (The father sounds like the victim of controlling behavior, which is abuse, but he's also responsible for getting the daughter to her online classes and for doing her work.)

If the child had just not shown up at school and had done no work since August when classes were in person, the parents would have already been contacted by the authorities - at least in the US as of 15 or so years ago. Maybe laws have changed and it's okay to not send your child to school now?

We pay school taxes for a reason! Parents job when it comes to education is make sure they are going and have the supplies needed. Teaching is the sole responsibility of the school system. Teachers have grown to behave like they are just there to moderate, aka baby sit. When teachers actually start teaching, than they’ll deserve above minimum wages

It's how the system works. Almost no one noticed a very important thing the parent said. "Work" she has to work, and she doesn't have time to be a parent so she expect the teacher to be the parent while she's working. I don't blame the mother. I blame the system. The system failed us, but we keep blaming each other!

I’d beat a kid for not logging in and doing homework. Every year I sent a note to their teachers noting that my kids knew what I expected of them and to let me know if they didn’t deliver. Punishment was medieval. I also told my kids that if there was a problem at school, I would listen but tend to believe school staff. My now-grown kids are stellar humans and I wasn’t a helicopter parent.

You would beat your child for not logging in and doing homework. Beating a child and medieval punishment should be reported to Child Support Services. Sadly, sometimes the school is the child's last defense against abusive parents as teachers are the first to notice bruises and other signs of physical abuse. If you tell a teacher you are beating your child they are legally mandated to report you.

This problem exists in all countries. Parents expect the teachers not only to teach, but also to educate and co-parent their kids. But when teachers discipline a kid for being rude or disruptive, the parents report them to the principal for being unreasonable and biased towards their little angels.

And I really think she should because it will be more money and less stupidity to deal with.

Lol and what was that business of not talking to the husband? Someone has major trust issues. lol

But for real, do entitled asshats like this not realize that's part of why theres a teacher shortage, aside from parents also not trying to keep teachers safe from disease by simply wearing a mask???

They are there to TRY and TEACH your child not to fkn BABYSIT them or do your job for you. They have more than one pupil to educate and it’s blatantly obvious you are leaving your child alone and to their own devices so if anyone is to blame for failing it’s her lazy ass child.

‘I don’t want to make the time to be a parent, so you do your job and teach....and while you’re at it.....go ahead and ‘ train’ her too. I don’t feel like dealing with an unruly child’ p.s.

This is problems in both gaps in the genetic code, wrong social environment, educational and economically glitches this parent suffers from. Just me judging from the text THIS parent wrote. Now how ever it could be in the to much/to little spectra, no matter in which direction it ends up in this behaviour. Unfortunately these parents take all of the stage and the lager percentage being in the middle is n e v e r seen, heard or praised for their gratitude to teachers work.

I have taught in public schools for almost 25 years now, and I NEVER give parents or students my personal phone contact information. I don't like dealing with texts anyway - it is an even more intrusive demand for dialogue than the telephone. I've seen fellow teachers get abused by call and text. If you want to talk to me, even in the isolation era, please make an appointment to speak with me, or call the school office if you need to talk today.

Honestly, my mom's been retired for 10+ years, but based on the small amount I saw, there's nothing particularly special about this email exchange. Maybe there are more parents like this than there used to be, but they weren't exactly in short supply a decade or two ago, either.

You think the teachers like doing this virtual stuff?? I am sure they are annoyed by it as well, and would rather have the kids in class, but everyone is trying to be SAFE!! All she is caring about is her job!! Grow up parent!!

I think you meant "minimum wages". But if you personally want a "minimum wedgie", I know a few teachers that can help out with that at minimum for sure.
