“You Lost Me At Money”: Client Is Surprised Getting A Tattoo Isn’t Free, Gets A Reality Check From An Artist

There’s a certain category of people who will go to any lengths to avoid paying for services rendered. Emotional manipulation, faulty logic, pretending to be a victim, guilt-tripping, screaming and shouting—they’ll go to any lengths to weasel their way out of parting with their cash. It can be incredibly insulting to a professional when they’re told that they should do something for free because they enjoy it. Artists of all kinds, especially, fall victim to these attempts at exploitation.

That’s exactly what happened to a professional tattoo artist who goes by u/rockpaperpowerfist on Reddit. He shared screenshots of his conversation with an annoying and entitled client on the r/mildlyinfuriating subreddit, and how he rejected them. The jobless client thought that they’d be able to convince the artist to work for free by calling their profession a hobby. A hobby!

Scroll down for the full story below, Pandas, and share your thoughts in the comments. Has anyone ever tried to get you to do your job for free? If so, tell us all about it so it can act as a warning to all the other Pandas out there on how to deal with entitled clients.

We reached out to David McKinlay, the owner of the Archangel 1608 Tattoo Studio in Glasgow, to get his take on entitled clients who demand getting inked for free, how it’s insulting to professionals when clients try to barter, and why it’s vital to respect your tattoo artist’s time. Read on to see what he told Bored Panda.

Some clients believe that simply because someone loves their job, it counts as a ‘hobby.’ These entitled people shamelessly ask professionals to work for free

Here’s the conversation between one some client and a tattoo artist who wasn’t having any of their nonsense

David, the owner of the Archangel 1608 Tattoo Studio in Scotland, shared his experience with difficult clients with Bored Panda. “We do get people asking for discounts, but it’s not as common as it was. I think we’ve a reputation now for not taking nonsense,” he explained. However, he pointed out that other professionals from different industries still get a lot of people asking for handouts, from bakers to hairdressers.

“It’s insulting though. These people trying to barter certainly don’t go into their supermarket or travel agent and try to get the price down,” he said that it’s specific industries that get targetted by people who try to get a better deal.

David himself has never had someone tell him outright that tattooing is a ‘hobby,’ however, he’s had to deal with people who certainly had that attitude. Some clients simply don’t respect these professionals’ time and think “it’s ok if people cancel last minute, or fail to turn up, as they think we can just do some drawings to fill our time, when we should be earning money.”

In David’s opinion, more folks definitely need to call out rude customers. “In the last couple of years, there’s been a rise in entitled, over-bearing, and spoilt attitudes from a certain minority that think the sun revolves around them… when it doesn’t! It shines out your tattooists butt!” he quipped.

Redditor u/rockpaperpowerfist’s story reached quite a few people on Reddit. Their post got 27.7k upvotes and started up an important discussion about not working for free. The OP also made everyone laugh by using the same logic as the client and suggesting that landlords shouldn’t charge rent because owning property is just a hobby, too. Imagine not having to pay rent when prices are going haywire, it would put at least one of our worries about the economy to rest.

A while back, Bored Panda spoke to Matt Dowling, the founder of The Freelancer Club, about artists being pressured to work for exposure. Matt’s project aims to eradicate exploitative unpaid work and late payments in the freelance sector.

“Many see freelancers, particularly in the creative sector, as hobbyists and believe they can get away with ‘paying’ in exposure. They leverage their audience size, their brand name, or the allure of gaining recognition. This is why services in exchange for exposure is commonplace in glamourous sectors such as fashion, music, and film,” Matt explained to us.

“From a freelancer point of view, they are often told that working for exposure is a rite of passage or an essential part of building a portfolio by their teachers, college professors, and peers. This has created a culture of exploitation that we must address at both ends,” he said.

Here’s what the folks over on Reddit had to say about the slightly delusional customer

“At Freelancer Club we take a hardline and suggest freelancers say ‘no.’ The issue is that some ‘freelancers’ are individuals with a passion who will freely give their work away for exposure whilst professionals rely on payment to survive. This muddies the water.”

According to the expert, working for free damages the creative’s career and harms the entire industry as a whole. That’s because other professionals are then taken less seriously and clients think that they can get away with asking them to take on projects for exposure.

“In the UK, unpaid work costs every freelancer £5,394 (7,086 dollars) per year and the figure is very similar in the States. If you give up your work for exposure thinking you will get paid work from it in the future, the statistics show this is rarely the case, besides, shouldn’t additional work be a consequence of a paid job anyway? If someone is willing to promote your work, they must value it so why not pay them! It’s easy to get into a cycle of working for exposure and never get paid,” Matt mused.

He said that the main reasons why people choose to work for exposure is because they hope to get paid work in the future, they hope to add to their portfolio, or they think that they can use the name of the company that promoted their work.

“In addition, knowing your creative work is being seen by lots of people feels good and strokes the ego. I believe there is a correlation between exploitative work for exposure and validation of choosing a creative career. Many creative people are told to ‘get a real job’ when they express their desire to do something artistic. Seeing their work in print, online, or gaining recognition somehow validates their decision and, in a twisted way, proves the doubters wrong. The irony is that they have given up their value to do so.”

Matt stressed the fact that creatives are talented and should value themselves in order for others to value them.

Meanwhile, if you happen to come across a rude or entitled client in your line of work, the best things that you can do are to stay cool, professional, and try not to take anything personally. Though at the same time, you shouldn’t stand for any abuse.

“Keep your cool and remember that whatever abuse they’re giving you is no reflection on you as a person. That customer doesn’t even know you, so there’s no way it could be. But on the other hand, don’t be subservient. Don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself and tell customers that abuse is not tolerated. And if it persists, hand them over to a manager as soon as you can and let them deal with it,” Alexander Kjerulf, from the Positive Sharing project, shared with Bored Panda during a previous interview.

“You have to remember that in many cases a customer who behaves badly is not necessarily a bad person—it can be a good person having a bad day and that’s why they’re acting out. But the sad truth is that some customers act this way because they’ve learned that it works and will get them discounts or preferential treatment,” he said.

Go to a professional and pay for something you want to be proud of. Go to the other guy to get "pork fried rice" misspelled into your neck.

Sounds like a 18 yr old kid whining to get their way. When they said they don’t have a job because they need to enjoy what they do, it gave it away. 😐 I’d be like if you enjoy tattoos you should get a job and then you can pay me to tattoo you. Because your paying for what you enjoy then your working at something you enjoy in my eyes. 😅

I've met one of these people before. Too morally superior to work 'just to make someone else rich' but not too morally superior to beg for everyone within earshot to give them something for free. The fact that this person is too lazy to look up a Facebook profile makes it obvious why they are really not working.

How do they think that works? You tell your landlord you love your job and so they say oh well I won't charge you rent then? Loving your work doesn't stop you needing to live.

I've been playing music professionally since the mid 90s. Long, long ago I lost count of the number of entitled people who expected me to provide free music. It's not as if I've put ten or twenty thousand hours of practice in or anything, plus providing thousands of dollars worth of gear for gigs.

Im an Illustrator whos had TONS of people wanting free tattoo designs, free children's book illustrations etc....its extremely insulting. I also moonlighted in the pet trade in TO and THE WORST customer was Jeanne Beker ("famous" canadian)!! She left her sons lizard at the shop while her family was on vacation (we fed it, changed its pen, played with it etc)...she left it MONTHS aftr she was supposed to pick it up! Thn whn she finally showed up she pulled the whole "do you know who i am?!" BS and thought becaus shes on TV that we shld waive the pet sitting fee completely! I had another job with a dog groomer in TO and guess who called in to try and get special treatment for free again?? Yup, Jeanne Beker and she pulled the whole "do you know who youre talking too?!" line AGAIN!! I said "yup and i dont give a damn WHO you are!" Just unbelievable!! That woman is a real piece o wrk and just a gross human being!

I had someone b***h and b***h for a few days because I wouldn't fix and clean their computer for free. Like seriously "why should I pay you?" You don't go to work and spend hours to days working on something and then expect not to be paid do you.

First time I met my doctor he asked what I did for work. I told him I work with computers. He asked me if I could look at his laptop. I said, "Sure. Is this exam free?" He said no, that was like 15 years ago. Great doc. Small diameter fingers.

Actually, I've got an idea! (No sarcasm, maybe such people would get it then...) Why don't tattoo artist say, you know what, the tattoo is for free, clients just need to cover the expenses. Then list: ××$ for materials used, xx$ for electricity consumed, xx$ for artist's time, ... voilà, tattoo itself is free 😇

They do that at certain events. Little tats that you can choose from for a good pay. I don't know where you're from, but here in the U.S. we have Friday The 13th tats, a list of tats, anywhere on you, for 13 $ But they (tat artist) set the rules on how big, and some placements too, depending if tat artist is comfortable with its placement. However, no artist should ever be exploited in their professional career just becuase they are good at something. IJS.

I'm a physician, and I can't tell you the number of times I'll have a patient in an exam room, and at the end of their visit they'll say *cue to the stomach drop* " As long as I'm here ( insert husband, wife, S0 or child) needs their med(s) refilled, could you do it now? Of course the other person isn't there. I always tell them that if that OP is out of meds, they need to be seen and call to make an appointment. I didn't spend 13 years of my life in college/med school/ residency to work for free. I paid all my student loans back. Second greatest pet peeves is a patient calling me after a visit and telling my staff Dr. " Forgot to fill X medicine." They should look at their pill bottles before they come in so they know what they're out of... I'm not their mother. That's like going to the store, forgetting to get milk, and call the store when you get home and tell them you forgot milk...( Insert banging my head)... Retirement is looking better and better every day...

I'm with you on most of this. But why do you need to be reminded to send in refills that run out on a regular basis? You require people to tie up resources with a phone call every three months instead of having an organizational system where you send it in ahead of time? It's time wasted to be constantly having conversations with patients about routine, recurring refills. Just refill it when it's due.

There's a whole subreddit for stuff like this where "influencers" with 20 followers and other people try to get everything for free. Or if someone is getting something for free or discounted they'll turn around and demand free delivery as well. I stopped going on there because it was so frustrating to see these people and their entitlement. I think it's r/ChoosingBeggars .

I just hired my wife’s favorite artist to do a painting of the exterior of her favorite boutique hotel that I am going to take her for her birthday. I own 7 of his art pieces already and I have never “negotiated” a discount. I have no idea what the painting is going to cost but I know it will be beautiful, I know my wife will love it and I know the artist will be fair in what he charges me. It is what it is and artist deserves it and I appreciate his unique talent.

I'm a classically trained pianist who stopped playing for everyone after I was asked to take on a Wedding gig for a family friend. After my job was done, the bride's mother handed me a five dollar bill and said I could leave by the side door. No thank you. Not even a piece of Wedding cake. I swore I would never give my talents away for free again. Best decision I ever made.

My favorite tattoo I have I got walking in thinking I was going to be paying hundreds (it's a decent size, color bicep piece) and I walked out paying next to nothing. I didn't ask for that. The person was an apprentice and I let them use it in their portfolio. Then I tipped more than I would have had I been asked to pay what should have been the actual price.

Firstly, the person may or may not truly be unemployed but they are most definitely immature. Second, even if said tattooist was a hobbyist, and it is evident that is not the case that he is a professional; why would you assume his time, talent, and materials were free?

I have a family member who is a Master Seamstress. She has done work for the Stage and TV and has done numerous original designs. She is constantly begged for free items to 'get her exposure.' While she has done this occasionally for charity, it is infuriating that people believe she should design and provide lovely clothing (some pieces worth over $1,000) for nothing! Personally, I get hit up for free beading. The 'customers' believing that since something is handmade, they don't need to fork over $$. It's especially disgusting when this attitude comes from other family members!

Hopefully everyone in the industry requires a cash deposit to even start a drawing for their client or book any appointments with them. Weeds out the b******t right away, and everyone is on the same page before starting. Harder to collect money owed for services rendered after the fact. Nothing is free in this industry. Very common the artist is paying for their own ink, needles, disposables, PPE, let alone the set up cost for every appointment, ie dental bibs, plastic baggies, sleeves or covering for machines, paper towels, cleansers, biohazard disposal, licensing or operator fees etc. Which is why the shop minimum or $50 minimum is for. If you are so lucky to know an artist that does discount their work for you, TIP YOUR EFFING’ ARTIST THE DIFFERENCE. We love giving our clientele great tattoos at affordable prices, but never free. Tip us well and we’ll remember, your next piece might be more affordable. Also, stay in your lane. If you cannot afford that full sleeve don’t waste our time pretending you can. Get that lil’ ankle piece instead l

I am a professional landscaper and tiny home builder. I have people try to get me to work for free all the time, " oh, mowing a lawn is easy," "moving some rocks around is just playing in dirt," " I know it's called a "tiny house" but really it's just building club houses." This is a business, with actual business professionals, it takes training and talent and knowledge and ability. I would never ask my artist to work for less than they are worth, and in my eyes these guys sometimes sell themselves short. Swinging a hammer and buzzing ink into skin take the same kind of dedicated individuals with different skills and I think people that try to short you like that should be legally obligated to pay double plus a gratuitous upcharge for the insult and degradation.

Geez that's pretty messed up expecting them to work for free. I mean I'm sure when your doing your job nobody expects you to swallow for free because you sound like your having a good time with all that moaning and whatnot? Time is money not to mention the tools and the ink costs money as well just like your wigs and boots.

If they want a tattoo from someone who considers it's hobby, go down to the local high school and see who can snag a family members equipment for the afternoon. Though I'd bet those kids still expect at least a $20 be thrown their way.

I once had a male international student ask me (f) my age, parental status, marital status, etc. - typical questions if somewhat personal. After I answered him, he exclaimed, "Oh, I see! This is your hobby!" I was his instructor at a top 10 research university! Graduate school, studying abroad, a decade of teaching experience was apparently all for my "hobby." Actually, considering my salary, he wasn't that far from the truth...

I'm an artist who is learning to tattoo. First off, tattooing costs A LOT of money! Good machines are expensive! Then there's the price of good needles and inks, distilled water, green soap, gloves, tons of paper towels, cross contamination and bloodborne pathogen mitigation, plastic, Tegaderm, Ink Eeze, stencil paper and a ton of other stuff- way expensive for a "hobby"! I've spent over $3,000 on professional supplies just to learn how to properly tattoo! And the practice skinflaps! I use ReelSkin- not cheap at all! Then I'll have to pay for my certifications once I get to that level. Tattooing is a serious skillset- you're stabbing people thousands of times with tiny needles which can cause infections if not done properly! This person will probably end up in someone's garage or kitchen getting a nasty infection from an irresponsible person using embroidery needles and pen ink. The mindset that tattoos should be free pisses me off!

Why are they even bothering to continue this conversation? This is obviously either a minor who's to young to get a tattoo or a very young adult (18/19) who's very immature and entitled. In fact from the way she's talking she seems to be trying to flirt with the artist "because I'm amazinggggg" , trying to get him to follow her on Insta and just trying to get him to compliment her or tell her she's so hot that of course he'd love to tat her. I honestly see no reason he's even carrying on this conversation as its obviously not a serious one about getting a tattoo anyway so why waste your time

I kind of agree with the entitled ignorant kid, the tattoo should be free, but my time is not free, I do service work on swimming pools, and am in customers backyards for all my jobs! And have learned that just in case it doesn't end up where the customer wants is not a reason to not get paid! If they weren't happy with the tattoo end result would they not have to pay for it? Therefore, the tattoo will not cost a penny, or a bit, but the time you spend putting that mistake on their body costs a lot of money! You are charging them for the time you spent creating, and applying their choice(something they want, not need) time away from your kid, time away from your significant other, time you could of used making a living from someone more appreciative of your efforts!!! You lost them at Money, and they lost you at free! MY time is not free, Time us very valuable! Ask them to just spend 6 hours standing at your establishment, for Free? And charge based upon their response!

CAUSE MOST MEN AREN'T GONNA SET THERE AND PLAY PHONE TAG WITH A MAN THAT SOUNDS LIKE HE'S BEING FLIRTY.. COME ON NOW I COULD BE WRONG BUT I BOUT BET THAT'S THE DEAL IN A NUT SHELL... PERIOD... SO THIS IS A SUCK EXAMPLE OF THIS KINDA SITUATION..

Yep he thinks everything comes for free no he is wrong I agree with the artist on this one nothing comes for free and the artist needs to make money for his family

I charge $100 hr as Massage Therapist. A potential client told me if I cut my price in half, I could have twice the clients! 😄 😁 🤣 😂

Love my job and my boss, but don't be confused... it's my job. It's not optional. Also, why would I ever get a tattoo from someone who doesn't charge me? Like insulting the waitress who's bringing you food... dumb! It hurts to get messed up tats covered or removed.

The fact they said they were "too lazy" to check Facebook should have been a red flag.

The "client" here definitely does not sound old enough to be legally tattooed, at least not in my state.

My son was killed 8 years ago by a guy who didn't want to pay for the tattoo my son gave him. He kept refusing to pay and my son went to "tackle" him guy snapped my son's neck.

Oh, how awful! I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope the guy was caught and is currently serving a life sentence.

Kid, 16 yo tops, but most importantly completely detached-from-reality kid, they're not all like that. No use talking to him/her and wasting time.

This is awful. I bought a friend's oil painting for my mom for Mother's Day, and I was uncomfortable getting my friend's "friends and family discount."
