Tattoo Artist Gets Accused Of Racism For Tattooing Her Entire Body In Black

A London-based tattoo artist Belle Atrix is being criticized online after deciding to cover her body with Blackwork tattoos.

Belle has been documenting and sharing her controversial tattoo journey on Instagram by posting short clips of her tattooing herself in solid black tattoos. People are not happy about it.

While Atrix sees creating her own body art as a kind of “therapy”, her followers have many opinions. Some are encouraging her choice and saying that it’s “gorgeous”, “fantastic” and an “inspiration”. Others are on the complete opposite side however – “You need to be treated. Sick mind,” “Not saying this is racist cause it’s not but if she goes anywhere near her face it will be” wrote Instagram users. “Some people do it for different reasons, I’ve heard pain over aesthetic being one of them, but everytime I see it i still think how is this not akin to blackface, damn these people want to be black so bad!” wrote a user called jayvoops.

It is clear that some people find it offensive, but “Blackwork” style tattoos have been liked and inked on people for ages, so it’s hard to tell why this time it was too much for so many people. What do you think?

I don't think it's very attractive, but, each individual makes their own choices, some well reasoned. Some not. To me , racism is an ugly attitude toward races not your own , not, how you decorate your body.

I think you can be racist toward you're own race, but she isn't making a racial statement. It doesn't sound like she is trying to change her race or hate on being white.

Isn't this like, her own business? Why are people so judgemental about other people's lives but lose it when you judge theirs? How does it affect you if she inks her whole body black? And more importantly, how is this even racist? People who shout racism on every little thing are often racists themselves.

She didn't even cover her entire body, this has been done by multiple people who get tattoos, do you really think any where in their mind they're attempting to change their race? People who gets tattoos do it to make their body their own canvas, not to try and pretend to be a race they are not. People need to get over themselves, why insult someone for tattoos? This is not in any way shape or form racist or even remotely close to it. Hell a black person could get white paint tattoos, does that make them racist? Does it mean they're trying to change their race? No it means they like the color white in their tattoos and because their body is theirs they'll do what the f**k they want. I'm sick of unnecessary hate and discourse over non issues like this.

My first impression was that of a toddler with a black sharpie and the trouble they can get into. However, if she wants to do this to herself, then so be it. She's an adult and can make her own choices. She is the one who has to live with it. I wonder though if she will eventually regret her decision to cover herself in a solid black tattoo? What will she look like in thirty or forty years tattooed like that? As for the people calling her racist. These people do not know what real racism is. They have never seen it nor experienced it. The majority are far too young to remember the segregation that was still very prevalent even into the early 60's; the "whites only" and "colored only" signs everywhere and the harsh penalties for not obeying them. I could go on but I hope you get my point. No, what this person is doing is not racism or race or cultural appropriation. It is simply someone expressing herself in her own unique way.

Racism according to the Oxford dictionary: "Prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior." and "The belief that all members of each race possess characteristics, abilities, or qualities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.". Was this criteria met? No? Then move along. SJW's need a dictionary.

This isn't racism while people are wasting their time ranting about things like this been racist the true meaning of racism gets lost as people switch off. This isn't getting attacked in the street or on public transport been spat at called vile names. Not getting the job your over qualified for because of your skin. If you over hype an issue picking up every little thing the Message your trying to get out gets lost.

I think this is a sign this woman needs help, seriously. She OBVIOUSLY has self-image issues. Lets face it, this is FAR from normal. This is a cry from a woman who is very unhappy with who she was or is when this began. Either that or she suffers very badly from obsessive/compulsive disorder and just can't stop. I don't think it has anything to do with race or racism, I think it has to do with what or whom she believes herself to be or not be. If this were my family member or good friend, I would be HIGHLY suggesting counseling. The big problem is, should she ever decide she doesn't want this, it will be one of the biggest nightmares ever seen with removing tattoos.

What the actual f**k? Why there are always people like "You racist because of this, because of that!" ( expecially for nothing) and at the end the only racists that you can see are they? What the hell is wrong with this kind of people? Why they aren't able to do their f*****g business? The true racists are the people judging her for her choises about her own work on her own body, and actually a good piece of work on a very nice woman... Seriously, what the f**k is wrong with this people?

I just think of being coloured in by a big fat Sharpie...but this will never come off. I wonder what her rationale is... And shame on Bored Panda, I'm getting big horrible real estate ads even with installing Ad Block.

I don't think there is anything racist at all about this young ladies decision. In my opinion, which is my own, is it would be so much more uplifting and interesting if she chose a gazillion beautiful and colorful tattoos. To each, her own.

She's not doing blackface, that would be the most inflammatory thing.

And people call us transgender people crazy and make us jump through all sorts of psychological hoops before we transition to be the other 50% of the population. No psycholical coycelling required for this though. Seems a bit of a double standard.

No one is batting an eye at Sammy Sosa or Michael Jackson for going white. I hate double standards...

These are possibly the weirdest, which I mean a positive way, tattoos I have ever seen. Super unique and cool, also she is a very striking young lady. I say good for her for doing what she feels expresses herself...she looks awesome !
