TikTok Trend Shows Men Reacting To How A Tampon Works And Their Genuine Surprise Illustrates The Need For Better Sex Ed
InterviewThe sad reality is, not everyone paid attention in biology and sex ed class. So some people are ignorant about even some basic biological things like how tampons work (and they might be too shy or embarrassed to ask anyone to explain everything to them properly now). Not to worry!
An educational TikTok video challenge is going viral where women are showing their partners how tampons work. Their reactions? Full of astonishment and shrieks. Priceless. You can see how shocked they are when they finally realize this is something that women have to do for a week every month. Keep in mind that the videos aren’t 100 percent accurate, but they’re dramatic and educational.
Check out some of the best challenge videos below and let us know what you think of them in the comment section. If you want to, share your own experience when you learned how tampons worked and let us know if there’s anything related to human biology that you’d want to know more about but never got the chance to ask women or men about.
TikTok users are taking part in a challenge where they show men how tampons actually work

The video by the Demery Family got over 31.6 million views and is the most widely known entry into the challenge. You can watch the full clip right here

One of the most viral tampon demonstration videos belongs to the Demery Family who have a TikTok account with over 320.8k followers. Their video got a whopping 7.8 million likes, was reshared nearly 274k times, and was viewed more than 31.6 million times.
The fact that the video got so much attention proves that there’s more guys out there who didn’t know how tampons work in the first place.
And this just goes to show that TikTok really can be an educational force to be reckoned with (even though it might choose not to most of the time) if used right.
The couple, Kolby and Jas, told Bored Panda that they heard about the challenge through other influencers and Jas thought it would be a funny video, seeing as the couple’s having a girl in May.
“For this video, Kolby knew how tampons worked but a lot of guys lack knowledge due to the school system lacking teaching of the opposite sex teaching they only learn of their own sex,” the couple shared.
“We feel the health classes should teach both women’s and men’s reproductive system as well as how each can experience different things such as women with menstruation and males with something,” they said what they expect from the education system going forward. Kolby, unlike some guys, had an advantage when it came to topics like this one.
“Kolby has had the opportunity to learn from growing in an all-female home about such topics and teaching him in-depth to teach his daughter if I weren’t home will benefit him in the long run.”
Other TikTok users pitched in with their own videos and, like you could have expected, a lot of men were stunned to see how tampons absorb menstrual blood. The challenge also made a lot of guys feel more empathy toward their partners because they saw how much the tampon expands inside of them. The more you know.
While we’re pretty sure a lot of these reactions are genuine, others seem to be at least partly staged. But anything to make the topic more approachable and educational though, right?
Most men are completely shocked by the ‘revelation.’ Another TikTok user shared a video of how her husband reacted to seeing how tampons work

I watched a montage of videos like this and besides the men’s reactions, ignorance and disbelief, I was actually concerned when I heard one of the women says she leaves the applicator inside and it just dissolves. I can’t tell if she is s**t stirring the guy or being serious. You don’t leave the applicators inside, geez.
If it dissolves then she might have bit of a problem with acidity ;)
Load More Replies...This seems to all depend on your boyfriend being a complete moron.
Lol, mine found mine.. played around with it and then asked. Even put it on his nose.. I laughed so hard. No he's not squeamish at all, luckily.

Sorry, pasted twice :(. No, it's not that time of the month either :)
Load More Replies...This is utter bullshit, as a lot of the original comments stated... tampons don't expand to such an amount inside the vagina, cause there isn't a puddle of blood waiting there and also the vaginal wall prevent it from doing so. As a matter of fact, every single comment here like "Oh my gawd, they are so stupid because they didn't know it is like that" are the true idiots here xD
Tampon goes in vagina. Stays in until next pee. Mostly because pee wets the cord an gets soaks up to the tampon so it's more hygienic. Pull gently to wiggle it out. Catch on wad of toilet paper. Wrap an dispose in trash. Can't flush. Messes up plumbing. Wipe. Reinsert fresh tampon. Wait a few hours unless flow is monstrous. (Then pray no sneezes or coughing to release the dreaded gush.) Do the "insert and replace" about 6-8 times a day. Oh an at night hope you wake up an make it before the "laying down to straight up gravity flood" hits an you get to the potty in time! Also Not once a day. There are also pads and cups. I prefer the cup. Course I didn't have the cup for 35 years into my 51 years so far of periods so if I knew then...lol. Anyway that's how tampons work. Sometimes it's dry an hurt removing. Sometimes it almost falls out from the flow. But it never wings out like shown in a cup of water.
i keep a washcloth within reach when i'm sleeping during my period, so if it feels like i'm vaguely leaky i can just jam the washcloth between my legs and go back to sleep. perhaps not the best strategy, but my sleep is important to me!
Load More Replies...I've never seen a tampon applicator before. That thing looks fricking scary!!
Because for some women, without the applicator it feels like shoving a cheese grater up there.
Load More Replies...I find it strange they didn't know before ... I'm a man and I knew but ok, I guess why not... But why be so surprised or shocked? Next, show them sponges soaking up water and watch them lose their minds!
So how is it that men find basic hygiene items so strange and embarrasing? I
Because it doesn't pertain to them, and they don't want to know. Also, they just aren't taught these things unfortunately.
Load More Replies...As a girl who uses sanitary pads, I myself am a little confused by the applicator
The applicator makes it cleaner to insert the tampon into the vagina, it keeps you from getting menstrual blood all over your fingers. Way back in the day, applicators were simple thin cardboard tubes. I hate the plastic ones tho, so bad for the environment!
Load More Replies...I don't think men are *disinterested* in their partners, I think they're just plain poorly educated. It would probably be better to use a bud vase with a long skinny neck or an Ehrlenmeyer flask, but not everyone has access to those. Or kind of leave the end of the tampon stuck in the neck of the bottle maybe. Still, I applaud the young ladies for their initiative.
I'm gonna be honest, why would men have known in the first place, other than from sex ed? They're not (well ok they might knowing that a lot of them collectively share a brain cell) going to get curious and go "Hm, I wonder what happens with a tampon and how it works?" and go to the store and buy a pack if they don't have a woman in their life. Exactly, they wouldn't. That's not on them, nor is it on women. Why are people getting annoyed at men for not knowing this? It's really not their fault, they probably aren't thinking about them unprompted.
Here in the U.S., menstruation is *still* seen as something "dirty", and a distressingly large percent of the male population firmly believe that. Part of it is due to the utter lack of education - sex ed classes here do not teach boys about girls, and vice versa. Part of it is religious teachings, ie: Eve ate the apple, & got poor Adam kicked out of Eden, so all women & their bodily functions are 'baaaad'. It needs to change.
Load More Replies...I once read a story about a girl that her period, didn't know what it was, was too ashamed to ask anyone and in the end commited suicide. It was a while ago (1950's) and inspired the foundation of the UK charity Samaritans. But stories like the one here make me realise we still have a very long way to go before a basic human function like a period stops being treated as taboo. It's sad and needs to change.
I take a wild guess and say it's all in the US? By now it isn't even a cliché anymore that sex education is bad there. It's very common here in Germany to learn that stuff in 5th or 6th grade, you barely would find a guy that doesn't know how they work or why they are necessary here. How about stopping bashing on "stupid dudes" and start to criticize the schoolsystem instead?
This is the kind of discussion families should have with their children. Expecting schools to pick up the ball parents dropped is a sorry excuse.
This is so weird to me, all these men being so ignorant. We learned about the reproductive systems in school and our teacher went one step beyond by making the boys study the female organs and menstrual cycle, while us girls had to study the male organs and sperm lifecycle. Then each and every one of had to stand in front of the class and explain it.
I'm guessing you don't live in an area where "godly Christians" control the majority and refuse to let "such filth" enter the young minds of God's children. It's always fun to watch the meltdown when you ask why God made it "filthy" like that.
Load More Replies...omg lmao Ive seen so many of these i could not handle it- im a tiktok addict
Did that in 5th grade. With the whole class. In a plastic cross section of a female genital organ.
Yeah, but the girls get separated for that cuz fifth grade boys are WAY too immature to learn about anything pertaining to a vagina.
Load More Replies...I am astonished that all use applicators. That is so wasteful. I hardly see them in stores around here.
When I was in London, I had a nosebleed. My friend hustled me down to an emergency room and the nurse put a small-size tampon in my nose, then used a syringe (no needle) to squirt water on it, causing expansion. After 10 minutes, he removed it. No more nosebleed. He gave me several to keep handy. n the U.S., a special item is sold called a "nasal cot." It's bascially a tampon with no string that costs five times more.
The amount of water used is an unfair representation compared to the volume of blood during a period. Hard to believe it, but the average woman loses 3-5 tablespoons of blood each month.
I had to show the women in my office how big tampons get to explain why you should never flush them down the toilet.
This is actually helpful to some young girls as well, some girls don't have a mother figure they can go to for help/advice.
They're looking shocked because they knew nothing. The reason for that is OUR fault (society) We must stop having hang ups about periods! Even when it's included in the curriculum we are still seeing boys being 'sent out of the room' Why? Another example of how males lack of knowledge/behaviour has yet to be addressed by those educating them and bringing them up. Toddlers are STILL being told what they can or can't do/play with/wear according to sex, this shapes their entire life.
Yeah, we need better sex ed. I know a girl who went to school (I think it was a Catholic school, I'm not sure) and they taught her that periods were a punishment from God. I don't know if all Catholic schools are like that, but the one she went to was pretty weird.
I was lucky I guess-Dad showed me the birds and bees. Then Grandmother,Unknown to Dad and Mom showed me the real deal with grandpa looking on. Plus I was raised on a farm. I knew what it took to make a baby! Even though we were not a Medical family we also had a Grey's Anatomy book as well.(Used in medical Schools) for answering questions.grandpa insisted all his Sons and Daughters have a copy.Given as wedding Gifts!
Tbh, I don't even know how a tampon works and I'm a girl. I mostly use pads
Clearly these boys didn't grow up with sisters. Damn things were all over the place when I was a kid...
That first one tho. "How am I supposed to compete with that?!" I'm crying.
Why does this 'tiktok' s**t exist? Is it for high school kids? It's annoying having to hear about it. Now I see vids on my fave compilation channels that are including 'tiktok' submissions and they're all in portrait mode. Seriously, go the f**k away.
Tampons can be very useful for bad nosebleeds, for example. The 'Rhinorocket' they use in ER's to stop the bleeding is essentially a skinny tampon. But you can cut one up and put a little vaseline on it then place it gently in your nostril. Don't try to shove it too far up, though! Use a couple of healthy squirts of Afrin after blowing you nose (gently to get any clots out since they make the bleeding continue) beforehand. Leave it in at least 15 minutes. Your medical tip for the day!
Not to mention pinching yourself "down there" with those horrible plastic applicators!
Anyone can soak a tampon in Vodka and insert it up their ass. Quick intoxication without the smell of alcohol.
I honestly cannot see what the fuss is about. They do not expand that big inside, or they never do for me and how will this help anyone?
This cant be representative of men? Americans? Bible belt? Millennials? I can't believe this is typical. Even if never taught, men have enquiring technical minds enough to work out the physics of the solution.
TBF, the dude with the bowl cut and maybe braces looks about 12, so he gets a pass. Haha
Idk why these men don't know this wtf did they think they did? Or do they not even think about it ever?
This is actually pretty interesting and I do agree that men should learn more about tampons and stuff, but one of the comments said "you would be surprised how little men know" I do agree we should know more about how tampons work, but seriously you don't have to be that rude.
Fake news. Nice post highlighting the dumbest men and then posting it as representative of all men.
Firstly, their dumb expressions of shock are really ugly and dumb looking. Secondly, these ladies are being dramatic by unloading it into water. Nobody’s body is that watery, so a tampon doesn’t end up soaked in thin liquid and fully expanded. That’s really fùcking stupid, and they’re just confusing their moron boyfriends even more.
I dropped my mother's tampons in the toilet to watch them expand as a kindergarten. My son picked up a box of tampons out of the grocery store and announced, "Mommy's butt!" At two, he was so proud he knew what it was. I was horrified, but shouldn't have been. This was years ago, a man who was willing to purchase feminine hygiene products was considered exceptional. My ex thought it was ridiculous, shopping for the family included those items. I rembember being horrified when I had to purchase my first box of napkins and Tampax. Are girls still embarrassed?
I'm attracted to women and interested in women's parts so I learned about women and women's parts. It just seemed like the obvious thing to do. I never understood why guys are weirded out about menstruation.
Because many "boys" these days are raised in households where "these things" are not discussed. Don't blame the boys. Blame the parents and the "education" system for failing them.
Load More Replies...I'm attracted to women and interested in women's parts, so I learned about women and women's parts. That just seemed like the obvious thing to do. So I've never been weirded out by menstruation.
So, tampon applicators? And the fact the tampon doesn't seem to stay in shape and just "explodes"? Guess, in my country it looks different :-D
Tampons with applicators aren't widely sold outside U.S. apparently. Also, none of them "explode" like that. This demonstration involves water, and blood is much much thicker, and the tampon is contained by your uterine walls, and therefore stays in shape
Load More Replies...Are people seriously unhappy that men didn't learn how tampons work ? Why would they need to know that ? Why would they teach middle school boys that? Some things are better learned through relationships, especially intimate things. I just don't think this is something they need to know
Among other things, teaching them about feminine hygiene early creates empathy for the challenges experienced by girls and lessens stigma, helps with communication. Tampons, having periods etc. shouldn't be a subject of a joke or considered gross. Some of these guys above are husbands and they still don't know how it works. "Period poverty" for example, will never go away if we don't start to educate better, everyone for that matter not just the boys.
Load More Replies...Im more concerned about the first girl ,who says(laughing) period "sometimes" goes longer than a week!! (???) That should be a problem..
Not necessarily, menstrual cycles can be different for everyone and for some it can last around 10 days which can be normal for many women. It is only a problem if it is unusual for that person.
Load More Replies...This is more an indictment of the pathetic American "education" system than anything else.
What is gross about it? This shaming of things like these is what is gross. If you treated this like the normal thing it is, your men would not be this ignorant.

Not necessarily, menstrual cycles can be different for everyone and for some it can last around 10 days which can be normal for many women. It is only a problem if it is unusual for that person.

What is gross about it? This shaming of things like these is what is gross. If you treated this like the normal thing it is, your men would not be this ignorant.
