Woman Quits Job to Build Sustainable Bamboo Homes In Bali
176Kviews
Elora Hardy left a successful career in the NY fashion scene to build bamboo houses in Indonesia. The Bali resident and her team have spent the last 5 years revolutionizing bamboo construction in the belief that it is an underused but ideal renewable resource. Hardy uses boron, which occurs naturally in nature, to treat the bamboo and make it indigestible to insects.
Hardy was inspired by her father, who “chose bamboo for all of the buildings on campus, because he saw it as a promise,” she explains in her TED talk. “It’s a promise to the kids. It’s one sustainable material that they will not run out of. And when I first saw these structures under construction about six years ago, I just thought, this makes perfect sense…Why hasn’t this happened sooner, and what can we do with it next?”
Bamboo has the compressive force of concrete, the strength-to-weight ratio of steel, and is one of the fastest growing plants in the world. Damage from insects and moisture are its primary weaknesses, but if treated, bamboo structures can last a lifetime.

Must be nice to have a father (John Hardy) who is wealthy enough to let her quit her expensive job and go play in Bali...
Must be sad to be such a snarky little person
Yes it would be nice to have a father who is wealthy enough that I could quit my job to go "play" in Bali as you so sweetly put it. Wouldn't it be nice if the haters would stop hating & actually appreciate & be happy about what she was able to create "seeings her father was rich enough" for her to be able to use her time coming up with a concept that will be useful to a lot of people who can't afford to build homes out of conventional materials instead of making herself even richer by staying in the fashion industry in New York! What an awesome person she must be, instead of being "selfish" & working to benefit herself she gave up her job to fearlessly put an idea into motion & what an awesome idea it turned out to be!
useful for the locals NO!!!!! they are luxury apartments..so yeah thks to daddy,& because of bamboo orangutans lose their habitats!!!!!!!!
Actually it is useful for locals because they'll have jobs to work at the farms where they grow the bamboo and if they keep them in farms combined that with the fact that not that won't need to cut down as many trees which will save orangutans. Bamboo doesn't require as much space or time to grow as trees in fact in spring they grow up to 12 inches a day. Also in many cases bamboo is seen as a invasive plant species and a weed in a sense so i think its a great idea that their using it as building materials. And finally yes ofc its going to be expensive at first they only recently started using it but as it becomes more and more common its going to become less and less expensive.
PS: 304euros per night!!!
I think it's just the usual bad title choice, she just switched jobs like everyone does, but saying she quit makes it more dramatic and interesting to start reading.
exactly!!!! well although very nice..they are sold & rented as luxury apartments..i guess shes bringing newyork rent all the way to bali! haha!
and what would you do if your father was rich, providing that he would share it with your attitude?

I want one...
But, would it be strong enought to withstand a strong storm?
Bamboo has greater tensile strength than steel but I assume it all depends on how the bamboo is joined/connected In construction. I've often seen bamboo used instead of steel in scaffolding on highrise construction in places like Singapore & Hong Kong.
I've seen them use it for scaffolding in Indonesia too - on Java. It was amazing to see!!
yes actually in many environments where bamboo grows they are able to withstand quit alot of natural disasters
