I Create Surreal Worlds Using Only My Iphone

Playing with paradoxes and mixing-up real environments with surreal interferences is the most fun during my ordinary day life.

When I walk down the street, I shoot anything that catches my attention, creating an immense archive of photos. The creation of a new dreamscape happens at a later stage in the concept: thanks to my pool of images, the editing process is then almost immediate through the use of iPhone apps like PsTouch, iDesign, Superimpose, MatterApp e Mextures.

My influences are a chimerical blend of the metaphysical imagery in De Chirico with a love for Bauhaus geometry and the pop culture of Warhol and Lichtenstein all with the addition of some sci-fi retro.

I love that anyone can enjoy a ride in my amusement park. Just like going on a roller-coaster!

Charlie Davoli, alter ego of Riccardo Schirinzi, was born in Singapore in 1976, and he is currently based in Italy. In 2012 he begins taking pictures with his iPhone, recreating paradoxical visual situations, thus developing an experimental photographic language, which has its core in the creation of imaginative atmospheres and a surreal universe. Using Instagram as a preferred means of communication, with the I-Phone series (2012-2016), Phase in to the life (2015), The Photoshop series (2016) he creates an immense archive of images, which transport the spectators in a game of subtle interferences of universal geometries and deceptive perspectives. Charlie Davoli’s photographic work presents affinities with the Narrative Art photographic movement of the Seventies, in which the narration is seen compressed into a single photogram, which is then completed in the titles, giving the viewer the right input to suggest infinite experiences. In the same way Charlie Davoli, considering photography as a recreational medium to ironize on reality, brings out the narrative element, leading the observer towards new paths, away from the banal and obsessive routine of the real. Representative of a world suspended amongst dream and reality, Charlie Davoli is inspired by the Surrealist and Metaphysical language of the Avant-garde, to which is added an interest in the Bauhaus rationalist geometry, from which derives his rational and wholesome control of the photographic instrument and post-production process. Charlie Davoli collaborated with the Museo di Nazionale di Capodimonte and in 2018 in the context of the Reggio Emilia Photography Festival, the solo exhibition Retrospettive del Domani (2018) was held. He participated in the exhibitions: No Photo- Photography in Paratissima (2018), DigitalArt Factory (2018), Paratissima Talents (2019) and Artworks # 3 Errare Luca Abbadati | Charlie Davoli (2019). In 2018 he took part to both collective exhibitions: ImageNation Paris held at the Galerie Joseph Turenne, as well ImageNation Venice during the Venice Film Festival Days.

Wow! I could barely do this on photoshop let alone an iPhone! The way you mash two, three or four images together is really creative!

This is inspirational. Did you have take photographic or editing classes to get as good as you are now or is it a result of practice and experience?

Nice pictures. I like the second one in particular. As for the first one, my thoughts were pretty different before I read the caption. Having grown up in Umag (a small town on the Croatian sea side), where there is rich vegetation underwater, in the sea, I kind of thought that image was an exaggeration of that. ^_-

I think they're far more Magritte-like than De Chirico. Some good images though!
