This Supervisor Shared How He Made His Limping Employee Cry By Offering Him Time Off To Get His Leg Checked, Starting A Discussion Online
Interview With AuthorBeing a hard worker takes a lot of willpower and motivation. But this all seems to be worth it when these efforts pay off. However, very often people find themselves in situations where their workplace seems to take advantage of such individuals without appreciating them enough, or even worse, without providing them with proper working conditions. Bored Panda already covered some stories where employees were too stressed to tell their manager or a supervisor that they had an emergency and wouldn’t be able to come to work, one of these stories you can read here.
This time, a supervisor who goes by the username @Chumbolex on Twitter decided to share his personal story that is related to employees being scared of taking some time off of work when in fact they really need it.

No matter how committed a person is to their job, sometimes there are situations that need to be dealt with here and now, so it becomes necessary to take some time off of work

The Twitter user started his tweet by stating that this occurrence happened when he had just started his supervisor position at his workplace. The man noted one of the employees limping and, being a concerned person, asked him if he was okay. At first, the worker said that he was fine and assured him that he would work faster. This answer wasn’t quite convincing, so the supervisor told him “don’t let these people work you to death,” meaning that the man should take care of this health first without allowing the workplace to exploit him.

Some people online were quick to share their insights and opinions about the story

The supervisor’s words made the man cry as he actually wanted to go to the hospital but was too afraid to ask for some time off. The supervisor was understanding and assured the employee that he should do it and not worry about this. This situation started a heated discussion online as people were both happy with the compassionate supervisor and disappointed by the working conditions that employees face.
Some of the comments pointed out that his move meant that now the supervisor will have to stick by the employee in case he gets in trouble for taking the time off

Twitter users were happy that there are great supervisors and management that take care of the employees in this competitive environment

A lot of people online started sharing their own experiences when they had to go to work sick or miss important events because of work. Some users pointed out that there are good managers such as the Twitter user who started this thread who care about their employees and understand that sometimes there are situations where people need to skip work.

Twitter users were open about the fact that capitalism is getting out of hand at this point. Their working conditions are hard, the salary is usually not enough to support themselves and the stress that is created by the whole situation is making it even worse.
Bored Panda contacted the tweet author @Chumbolex who shared that he was surprised to see his story gain so much attention among other Twitter users. When asked if he ever found himself in a similar situation, the man revealed: “I’ve never viewed time off as a request. I’ve always just told bosses and managers that I wouldn’t be in, and that was only if I liked them. Otherwise, I’d just not show up. I’m more responsible now, but not by much.”

Some Twitter users decided to share their own experience of being in a higher position and ensuring the well-being of the employees

However, most of the users revealed situations where they had to go through constant calling of getting back to work

Having in mind some workers’ strikes taking place, it might seem that people are now ready to change things in the work industry. We asked the Twitter user if he has also noticed this, to which he replied by saying that “I think American culture has been colored by corporations. Most people don’t think ‘working conditions’ are a thing you can control.” According to him, people rely more on how good or bad their boss is, adding that “America needs a labor movement.”

How important are workers of higher positions? This story showed that they do have an impact on how employees are treated, but how major is this impact? @Chumbolex shared that leaders and managers are of great importance but “ultimately it’s the working class as a whole who decides. We view ourselves as individuals who are in control of our fate, and that may be true outside of work to an extent, but in corporate culture the only thing that matters is control of profit. We need, as working people, to let the boss know that labor controls everything.”

Share on FacebookOnly in the United States of A... In Europe you'll just advise your boss that you have to go to the doctor (free of charge or for a very small contribution) to get your leg checked and that will be the end of the story.
And of course you will get paid normally during that time, and if you need to stay home or even be hospitalized you keep on being paid normaly. Whoever thinks this is a bad thing ("socialism") has some serious issues.

We know we don't have it great "over here". Most of us are stuck and know no other way of life...simple as that

I'm so sorry, that makes me feel sick that people are so callous.
Load More Replies..."Thank you for being compassionate and empathic towards your employees" This comment hit me like a brick. Those things are just normal human behaviour in other countries. How can you even live like that? How can you see it as normal that these things are something special and out of the norm? Why do people let themselves be treated like worthless, disposable ... things? The US is the worst "developed" country in the world!
Hubby came home on his lunch break, saying he didn't feel well. Off to ER for emergency appendectomy. I had his pager, and his boss kept pinging him until I screamed over the phone at the guy, "He is in surgery!" (I left out a few profanities I did use in real life.)
I was in junior college studying law. The instructor was a total jerk, super rigid, no tolerance for humans being human. One night a student came limping in, holding his side, he looked like hell, his clothing torn, dirt and bits of road stuck in his hair snd clothing. Bloody pants and shirt. He was on time for class and sat down with an audible groan. Turns out he was struck by a car racing across the street to get to class on time so as not to be late. Fortunately the instructor took pity on him and allowed the student to go to the hospital. Crazy world
Reading posts like this make me very very glad to be living here, in Poland, even tho it's the worst of EU countries, but still, at least it's not USA. But i also really hope there will be changes for better in USA, my heart is with you Americans!
I mean, do other people in the world think we TRULY don't know how bad it is? The people who are telling you it's great are politicians and real life doesn't apply to them. They have sick days and insurance. If you're meeting Americans in your country they're privileged and the stuff like this story usually doesn't apply to them. They have time for vacations. They're not the norm. The only reason these stories get out is the internet. Dang.
Hear and read about how wonderful that "America Is!" Ant then we read about how the hoi poli went to the White House in an attempt to over-rule democracy. One of my sisters lives in the USA and she keeps telling me that it is wonderful, that there is NO racism , that everyone is happy, that what we see of street people is rare, or photos shopped etc. Not that I believe her, but I suspect than many of (probably your well off people,) fails to even acknowledge the plight of the underclasses.

Even if you have a doctor's note it's unexcused b cause boss didn't bless you with a day off. 8 points in a quarter and you're getting a conversation about your future. This ridiculous rule hurts people with chronic illnesses and people with young kids, most especially single parents. They can't just send their kids to school sick, especially these days. So they have to take off. It's bull. Being late gets you half a point so when I'm late I "forget" to clock in and when my supervisor asks when I got there I lie. What a great system they set up, right?
Stop blaming capitalism and put it where it belongs: on greedy bastard CEOs who should never have been in charge of a company
This is why we need good unions for workers. And if you don't want a union in your business, treat your employess so well that the won't feel like they need one.
This is one of those right things to do you only get the chance to do in a place where nothing is right. People going to work sick or injured not only, sometimes, pose a threat to their coworkers, customers, ... but ruin their own health, and their own view on a job that might even be great - but no job is great enough to justify this ... sick, wounded, hurt, broken - go to the doctor. Bosses - send them to the doctor, if they don't are in their right mind by themselves.
I work with cancer patients some of whom are worried about taking time off for their treatments, some basically told they would be let go. As I explain to them, can't be a great employer to want you to forgo cancer treatments and honestly if you don't do your treatments will definitely have to replace you....
It makes me furious when employees are treated like s**t. I honestly will never understand it. Just last week I offered to give up my own (small) yearly increase so that my company would pay one of my employees what they deserve to be making. When I started there I was completely shocked at how little this vital person gets paid, considering the amount of important work they do. I still don't know if it's going to happen, but I'm going to continue to fight to make sure they are valued appropriately. Why don't these bosses get that people will do better work if you treat them with respect?
I am an American and because I didnt have health insurance, I couldn't get help for my debilitating pain or depression. I attempted suicide 3 times and was nearly successful the last time. I just couldn't take it anymore. I was committed to the psych ward and only then did I get SOME help.
So, the bosses are a*sehole, that isn't the entire economy is at fault. America is a mixed market economy, not capitalism. In China you wouldn't be able to afford the appointment because it's two months wages, in NK if you aren't in the core class of Songbun then you are sol without big bribes (and still probably sol due to lack of medicine. Shyte bosses in the UK also don't give you time off for a doctor. America has some really shyte bosses and really shyte politicians, but the shyte isn't everyone.
Completely agree! People are comparing the bad parts of the US to the good parts of the rest of the world. Be fair about it.
