Teacher Doesn’t Like This 11-Year-Old Being Thankful For Getting Adopted By Two Dads, So These Three Girls Get Her Fired
An 11-year old faced harsh judgement from a substitute teacher when he said during a class discussion that he was thankful for his two adoptive dads. The internet is applauding the swift response from his classmates who didn’t hesitate to defend him and report the teacher, as well as the undisclosed Utah school district’s decision to ban her from teaching there again after she tried to use the boy’s family as a negative example to push her anti-gay views.
The incident was reported by local news

Louis van Amstel, a professional ballroom dancer and choreographer who has appeared on Dancing with the Stars, and his husband of almost three years, are in the process of adopting the 11-year-old.
Van Amstel was notified of the incident by the school’s administration and proceeded to post about it on social media, becoming emotional over his son Daniel’s words. He also told local news that Daniel had been afraid to stand up for himself for fear of causing an inconvenience that would dissuade van Amstel and his husband from going through with the adoption.
The couple has since met with the parents of the girls who reported the substitute teacher, thanking them for raising kids willing to take the side of a peer who’s being bullied even if the bully is a teacher.
Louis van Amstel posted on social media about the incident

A Twitter user who commented on the news shared statistics revealing the disparity between how many children in the US are eligible for adoption, and how many are successfully adopted. The 11-year-old’s fear that his adoption would fall through after he has already been through two failed adoptions is sadly common—studies have found children over the age of 9 being adopted at a much lower rate than younger children, despite making up almost half of children in foster care.
Considering these statistics, it’s especially reprehensible that a person in a position of authority would turn a child’s joyful news that he’s being adopted into an opportunity to spread a homophobic agenda because the parents are a gay couple.
Commenters passed on their congratulations to the family on the adoption, and applauded the girls for standing up to an adult who should really not be working with children.

People need to just take their homophobic opinions and stuff up their.... Nevermind. Gay parents are better than no parents. Who the hell says "don't be grateful for your loving family because they're icky" to a CHILD?!
I'm sure many times gay parents are also better than straight parents. Not just better than none at all!
Or loving, attentive, responsible parent(s) - regardless of gender, orientation, marital status, etc. - are always way better than none at al. :-)
If I have to guess i'd say, that would be someone who's calls themself a really proud religious, god fearing, family values, Anti-choice person. How did I do?
Proud? Nothing to be proud of being a bigot. "God-fearing"-----how come they never listen to the stuff Jesus said about "love one another" and "pray in your closet"? And "family values"----maybe if your "values" are hatred and ignorance.
bravo *clapping*
Linda Sellers, does it hurt to be that stupid?

And you need to take your libtard attitude and shove it up yours.
Who the fuck does that? What a horrible excuse for a human being to say something like that to a child.
My Son and his partner have adopted a fantastic little boy, so he now has 2 dads. Yoou couldnt find a more devoted 2 dads. Those 3 girls deserve a big THANK YOU for doing what was right. and well done to the girls parents.
More good news! I love hearing about children getting adopted by any caring people.
As John Lennon once said to Brian Epstien "It doesn't matter who its between, If its Love its got to be a good thing"
If I had to guess, this woman/monster is an old bible thumping bigot flapping her bingo wings and I am not surprised she would say that. But what’s worse about the whole situation, is not that we expect this from these types of people, is that she made this poor kid afraid his 2 dads will change their minds on adopting him and said he made her rant. That’s what makes her the lowest of low and pure evil!
She's a substitute, so she's probably in her early 20s, just graduated from a jeebus freak phony "school" and was raised by bigots....and Mormons, who are bigots by definition.
almost guarantee you she's a mormon.

No it doesn't. Gays should not adopt children. It's you brainless liberals who are pure evil.
You would actually rather a child go without a home than to see them adopted by loving gay parents? I don't think I trust your gauge of what "evil" is.
Some people just shouldn't be working with children. Name and shame this moron for spreading her homophobic idea's like Nicole Landry ( a special needs teacher) was named and shamed for kicking a child with Down syndrom. Nicole Landry keeps all her licenses and continues to teach special needs children.....
That's disgusting. I am beyond horrified that someone kicked a child and is still allowed anywhere near them in a classroom.
disgusting yes. the problem is that there isn't an alternative, not in the US. Seriously. No alternative.
I cannot think of anything more evil than telling a child who is so happy and thankful to finally be adopted by two loving parents, that they shouldn't be happy, and that the people adopting them are deviants, etc, etc, etc. I mean, seriously?! Thank goodness for those little girls for standing up to her, and doing the right thing. Also? I hope that woman is never allowed to teach or to be in charge of children again, because she's a monster.
Religion does it make it ok to treat anyone bad.
Believe me (ha!), if it wasn't for religion, people would find other excuses to put their views and opinions on others. Humans have always been doing it throughout history. There're are probably more people who are religious minding their own business, than those narrow-minded ones, like the teacher here. Luckily more and more people raise their children open minded, which can be seen by the three girls who stood up for their class mate. I am not a religious person myself, and of course you can interpret a lot into the bible, but there are enough people that don't do it. In the end it's a personal choice of someone to be bigoted and from yesterday. I am happy for the boy and I bet his dads are the best! Those girls are nothing but awesome!
Even if being gay were wrong, is it the kid's fault? I mean, whatever you may think of a person's life/options/ideas it's just stupid to shame his/her children. You really need to be a very bad, bitter, disgusting person to ruin a kid's happiness instead of minding your own business and living your own life. I'm happy this bigot will never teach again. She's dangerous.
Here in Utah we got this story when it came out a week or so ago. I have to honestly say that I LOVE that this story has gotten shared here on Bored Panda! I love the things I find to read on here and all the more that one has come across of such an amazing story of these dads, their son (which CONGRATS to ALL of you for gaining a new son as well as getting two dads for the lil man) and these three girls! Yes it's a Utah story, no not everyone is Mormon and a member of the Church of Latter Day Saints. Teachers can not be allowed to do something like this! I applaud those three little girls as well as their parents for teaching these girls that something like that is not right, even though that lady was a teacher and an adult!
"Infinite loop of dad jokes." I love it!
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. Yes, even their bigoted, fearful, and intolerant ones. Where the line is drawn is simple; when you try to force other people into your way of thinking, when you deny others their right to have their opinions. That's when you cross the line. This teacher has every right to her beliefs. She does not have the right to force those beliefs upon her students or anyone else. She made a rather serious error in judgement, and suffered the consequences. I hope, perhaps, that this makes her rethink her beliefs. I'm not holding my breath, but... I can still hope.
The line is also drawn at punishing others for not sharing your beliefs
I don't believe her "beliefs" are the issue, but rather her using those beliefs as justification to publicly shame a very vulnerable child. it's her *actions* of publicly shaming a vulnerable child that are the issue. Having an opinion, is not justification for negative behaviour (violence, bullying, abuse, inciting hatred etc) .
Heartbreaking that this moronic betch is in the world of education. this is why America needs decent wages for teachers: make it competitive and get good people.

Liberals are moronic b*tches and traitors to this country.
This beast of a woman probably thinks that the opposition she faced was simply the price she had to pay for "martyrdom." Her "persecution" will only strengthen her resolve during her next "mission." Bitch, my God would never.
Bravo to those 3 girls. Bravo to that school. Shame on that horrid specimen of a 'teacher'. And may this little boy, his 2 dads, and everyone in their world, only have good things in their lives - because they clearly deserve it.
I will say it . Take your homophobic opinions and shove them up your ass. This is from a straight guy. I don't care who or what your sexual preferences are. I don't care if you are straight or gay. You are always welcome in my home. Just don't bring your feelings of child perversion and or woman/man abuse. I'll beat your ass!
I am a Christian and have never had a problem worth homosexuality. I understand that the Bible says that it is a sin, but any good Christian also knows the verse John 3:16- For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, so that who ever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life. It says that God loved the world, not all the straight people in the world. The teacher deserved to be fired and those girls did the right thing. There is being a Christian and then there is being a zealot who thinks everyone wants to hear your bigoted opinion. Instead of judging each other, we need to just love each other.
Except the Bible does not say it is a sin. That was added in 1946 to the RSV. Any good Christian knows that Christ never spoke of relations of any kind between two men (if it was so important you would have thought to mention it), but be did give a fairly well known sermon at Har HaOsher in which he warned against judging others and suggest we be far more concerned with removing the log from our own eye than removing the splinter from our neighbor's. Luke 7:1-3.
Linda, the old testament also tells you not to eat shrimps or wear clothes with mixed fabrics, do you follow those too? And hopefully you have never eaten a steak in cream sauce, because that's also a sin.
I am a Christian who does not feel the need to get into "who knows the word better?" debates. You completely missed the point of my original statement and that is okay. Have a good rest of your day.
This comment is hidden. Click here to view.
Yes it does. The Old Testament says, "Man shall not lay down with man." It also says, "Judge not lest ye be judged."
And you missed my point, which is when the false belief that homosexuality, in and of itself, is a sin creates the social environment where this teacher feels justified in her actions; a cultural environment where people feel justified brutally murdering those who are gender non-conforming; and a political environment where the populus feels justified in terminating employment, denying food and lodging, and tearing families apart by invalidating their marriages and adoptions. You may not be that type of Christian, but that false mainstream Christian belief is what justifies so many Christians' unloving behavior.
You turn to John 3:16, but I concern myself less with what is a sin and more with how I can express Christlike love to my fellows (John 13:34). In that vein, I apologize for attacking your post. I truly wish you an expectant Advent, a happy twelve days of Christmas and an ebullient Epiphany. May the love of God, which passeth all understanding, be with you and your loved ones this season and give you strength and hope in the years to come.
Listen to William. He's right. There is NO MENTION of homosexuality being a "sin" anywhere in the bible. Don't wallow in your ignorance, shut off the jeebus freak radio station, sit down, and READ.

Yes there is, the Old Testament says, "Man shall not lay down with man."
As a Christian I still believe homosexuality is a sin. We may be born with that temptation, but to give in to it is the sin. But as a Christian, God never told me to judge people. He told me to love them. I would rather have a world full of happy children living with adopted gay parents, than to have 1 child grow up not knowing what it means to belong to a loving family. People need to learn whats really important, and Christians need to remember WWJD. He'd love this couple for taking care of one of Gods children and showing them the love that we all deserve
Homosexuality is NOT a 'sin'. Nor is it a choice. Most people are born straight. Some are born gay, asexual, bisexual, etc. I repeat: IT IS NOT A *CHOICE*, and therefore, cannot be a 'temptation' to 'give into'. If a man falling in love with another man is a 'temptation', then so is a man falling in love with a woman. A person cannot help being born homosexual, anymore than they can help their gender, the colour of their skin, their eyes or their hair. Love between two consenting adults is beautiful. Love is love is love.
Bunzilla, I cannot like your comment enough. I moved away from organised religion when I was told that homosexuality was a sin and saw people, including myself treated like we had a disease that needed to be cured or we were some strange otherworldly monster that was just confused or going through a phase. Homosexuality isn’t a choice or deviance. Also, to the troll on this thread-you must live a sad sad sad life. You have been reported to BoredPanda for hate and threatening speech.

It most certainly is a sin. Read the Old Testament.
And as a Christian who has actually read the Bible I know Jesus did not say anything about homosexuality or same sex marriage. He said a lot about divorce being a sin. Of greed being a sin. Of judging others as being a sin. I would think if he thought homosexuality was a sin he would have said something about it. As for the scant seven passages relied upon by modern "Christians" (ie bigots) to condemn homosexuality, the passages actually did not even use the words homosexual or homosexuality until those words were added to the RSV in 1946. Christians need to remember, that even if they think the Bible is the Word of God inerrant, that Word is in ancient Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek. Unless a Christian speaks those languages fluently and understands them in the context of their times such Christians see but a reflected shadow of The Word.
p.s. I come from a family of multiple faiths and denominations. Was given 7 bibles when I was a kid, for the one christmas. Logical little me, opened the all up to the same chapter and verse.... and all but 2, had totally different wording, depending upon what "bible" it was from. My question was, and still is, how could I have received 6 *different* versions of the "one" bible? And if these bibles can be different *today*, how many more changes to these stories have been made over the last 2000+ years? There are just way too many loopholes, for any logical mind to accept this paradigm.
it was also written what, 300 years after the events? If anyone has a family filled with "rumours" about who did what and when, we all know that a story can't be kept straight from one person to the next, let alone between generations, let alone over 10 generations....
as long as you keep it to yourself, I have no issues. im tired of hearing my "family" tell me that they love me so much that it's a shame i'll be in hell when I die since im gay and married to a woman. surprise surprise I don't see much of my family anymore, they don't like to include us since their churches don't support homosexuality or even tolerate it. you all talk about love while my family made me feel unwanted, gross, and alone. Alone surrounded by people I thought loved me, but i cant change how ive always been. I hope in the end, that all of the pain your faith causes to others was worth it, I really do. I hope it's true and I hope you get to heaven and all that, because if was all for nothing I can't imagine the disgust some Christians will have for themselves.
You're not going to hell. There's no such place and even if there was God wouldn't send anyone there because of who they LOVE. I hate when people say that, especially to the ones they are supposed to cherish love and protect more than anyone else in the world. I hope your family come to their senses soon, apologise and ask for your forgiveness for putting you through this.x
I'm upvoting this comment. I don't believe homosexuality is a sin, but I believe that you're a good person with good values. Keep on keeping on.
When did you choose to be straight, csaclint?
Everytime i decided to have relations with a female. Pretty simple. Now i may have had issues to address regarding premarital sex, but much like my original post regarding homosexuals, thats between me and God. So yeah, you took a shot, you missed. You can try again if you like, however you're coming with an agenda, i'm not, i'll win every single time.
If you're a Christian, haven't you realised that most priests are gay and that JC had a lot of close male 'friends'. Let people be what they want to be, as long as it doesn't hurt others.
jesus also hung out with hookers, thieves & murderers... and yet he's praised as being someone to aspire to be like. The irony, huh?
You're correct, Jesus hung out with those who needed him. When he returns again, he'll be found with the same groups. Those are the ones who need saving, and those are the ones he's here for.

And if you said that anywhere I could hear it I would make it my mission to make you wish your mother had drowned you at birth.
You are an asshole fuck off pardon my language but you have no idea and you are just an internet troll living in a basement ignoring the real world that all of us have to deal with on a daily basis and it fucking sucks man! You know when I was 4 months old, my brother died in a car accident, and everyone sent notes and flowers and flat out said to our faces that he's in a better place and where the hell could be a better place than with his family? Huh? You know, when I was born, he didn't leave me alone for a second, my autistic sister still doesn't know what happened to him, and my mother started doing drugs, but he's in a better place, sure, we would all have been happy and fine if he had live, he was even planning to move back closer to us, fuck you.
fuck u
Why did the sub feel the need to trample on someone else's happiness. The amount of vinegar in some people is astounding.
These girls should get guaranteed full scholarships to the school they want and the teacher should be fired and should be able to not teach ever again at any school in any state
What an evil witch!
It takes surprisingly little to become a substitute. A clean background check and 20 hours of training in some states
whoa... that, is terrifying. :o
The best thing you can have happen is to witness someone, other than you, willing to stand up for your child. I was so proud of my son's therapist for standing up to a bully, his Special Ed teacher..my son is autistic. The teacher was not only read the riot act for her behavior in front of her boss, she was removed from special ed and eventually reassigned. I informed the school if she ever came in contact with my son again, I'd get lawyers involved.
Some heroes don't wear capes ... and travel in threes ...
These girl are real heroes and how wonderful they turned an ugly situation into something good. I wish them and the boy all the best. But seriously, 100 000 kids a year's up for adoption and only 50 000 are adopted? Where are all these pro-life people? Why aren't they adopting them all?
I'm not surprised to see this incident was in Utah. I lived there for many years - some of the most hypocritical people I've ever met live in Utah. They need to practice what they preach in the predominant religion there. So happy this little boy was adopted and SO proud of the three girls that stood up to the teacher!
My daughter was raised by a single mother. Teacher probably wouldn't like that either, huh?
Hope they all get invited to go on Ellen.

Does Ellen have a vagina? She's a woman, NOT a man. She would have Mr Johnson & the boys if she was a man.
Ma'am, what does this mean? Like, what does it have to do with Nadine's post?
The best news besides the adoption being finalized here, is that the hateful woman who went on this tirade has been fired by the agency that apparently outsourced the subs and was responsible for the sub assignment.
Bravo young Daniel's classmates for getting the attention of someone in authority! Best wishes to him as his Dads help open this new chapter.
When I was in high school I was bullied by a teacher. I had a men breakdown and had tried to take my own life, so I was in inpatient for a week. When I came back to school, I was told by some people that one of my teachers took about 20 minutes of a class period to talk shit about me, saying all the stereotypes about mental illness.
I have my own views on homosexuality. I believe it to be immoral. I believe it to be sinful. But I ABSOLUTELY KNOW that it is NOT my place to try to make anybody else conform to my system of belief. I also know that, whatever my feelings on it, the LGBTQ+ community is not made up of subhuman troglodytes or some weird backwards subset of humanity - each and every one of them is a human being deserving of the same courtesy and respect that I expect. I don't have to agree with someone's lifestyle choices, but the only person whose every action I can control is ME. Far too many people *cough conservative fundamentalists* treat an action or behavior that they disagree with as if it was the sole defining character trait of another human being. I judge others on content of their character, not a cherry picked behavioral trait.
How did this bitch get to be a teacher?
She could of just said ok and moved on like normal people but no she showed her true colors and got walked tf out.
I have so many things to say and rant about his woman but I will not because there's too much.
Yikes, when you're so homophobic you don't want children to get adopted. WTF is this person in a career that works with kids?
Praise those girls! I bet God’s proud of them...sorry I’m a Christian
Being Christian is okay as long as you preach love and acceptance. :3
no need to apologise for your beliefs. :) Being Christian (or any faith), is a wonderful thing, when used to perpetuate peace, acceptance, and love. (says the person from a multi-faith, multi-denominational family, who holds no singular 'religious' faith). When *anything* is used to perpetuate hatred, shame, or judgement, it's a problem. And yeah, I do bet god (in whichever form), would be very proud of them for what they did. :)
In my experience substitute teachers were always kind of weird beards lol not that some weren’t great but
im so happy for gay people in western religiously mostly christian politically democratic dominated countries where LGBTQ+ people arent thrown off of rooftops like in many countries where the ''religion of peace '' rules, im happy for the child and hope these two dads will make a great job what a time to be alive huh guys
altough i didnt agree with gays but adoption is heart warming.. i would shut my mouth in this case..
How is that ironic?

So, they got a person, that does NOT agree with their opinion fired? Nice.
There is a difference between having an different opinion and telling a KID he shouldn't be happy to have a loving family. You can think what you want, but surprisingly actions have consequences.

Gays should not adopt children. I guarantee that boy will be taught to be gay. It's a man and a woman, NOT a man and man or woman and woman. The Old Testament says, "Man shall not lay down with man."

The American who implied these girls should get college paid for for this act of kindness....theyll already get that, they live in Sweden where college is free. You don't need to win some birth, athletic skill, superior intelligence or viral lottery to afford an education there.
Utah is in Sweden now? I'm confused!
I’m not seeing anything in the article about the three young girls who stood up to the teacher living in Sweden. The entire event happened in Utah, unless I’m missing something. On an entirely different note, the cost of University in the U.S. is beyond obscene. I got angry when I had a friend tell me how much it is.
Yes, the cost of higher education is the rest of your life as an indentured servant. :-( But yay, isn't AmeriKKKa great again? :-(
They're not in Sweden. They all live in Utah

Yes but doesnt this curtail the teachers first admendent rights.... Could lead the school to a very expensive lawsuit
Go to crap with your amendment rights. Bullying a child, that what it was- plain and simple.
Well, what school doesn't long to employ a lawsuit-happy bigot.

I AM sick of hearing stories of people losing heir jobs for having opinions counter to the popular, aka liberal, leftist progressive witch hunters
We're sick of idiot fucking bigots like yourself spewing your ignorant opinions everywhere. If you can't see why this isn't appropriate, you're even more fucking stupid than you seem, which I previously thought impossible.

kinda sick of hearing idiots call people bigots, or worse, for expressing their opinions too. And I really hate it when some one says something in favor of some one else being able to voice opinions without fear of reprimand and gets called that same.
This comment is hidden. Click here to view.
You're a bigot too, but you're a libtard and won't admit it. And YOU are the stupid one Jack*ss.
It doesn't matter what your beliefs are, as a teacher you have zero right to impose them on your students.
Meh, I'm all for teachers imposing some of their beliefs on children as long as they are central to *standard, non-religious* child formation models: play nicely in the sandbox, share your crayons and paper, wait until someone else has finished speaking before speaking, say "please" and "thank you," think critically, challenge authority figures who spew vitriolic hate at your classmates ... ;-)
Lets forget the leftist, rightist shit for a second. She was unkind, over the top, cruel and mean to a child. That's why she should get fired, period. She's a teach for f*ck sakes! She is supposed to protect those kids, comfort them, not be little and hurt them. Her views have no place in the classroom, and certainly no right to be cruel to a child.
So you approve of bigotry, homophobia, xenophobia and being a deluded and self-righteous ass? And you're totally cool with bestiality, I see. Counseling might help -- although I suspect you're a lost cause.
Well, we know he isn't a Christian, because contrary to modern fundamentalist belief, the story of Sodom is a prohibition on bestiality, not homosexuality. (Angels are not human and are agender).
This comment is hidden. Click here to view.
That's funny because it's you brainless libtards who are deluded and self-righteous.
No one is getting fired solely for an opinion. People are getting fired because (a) they are espousing an opinion in direct contradiction to the mandates/mission/position of the business/organization; and/or (2) In their official capacity, or under color of their official capacity they are using their opinion to bully, terrorize, intimidate, incite violence, etc. BTW, put down your cross - somebody much better than you already played the role of martyr about 2K years ago and already swept award seasons for the foreseeable future.

Sure whatever she said was likely correct but... none of her business. Better to just roll eyes and move on. Being paid to teach not give opinions outside the curiculum or give a shit about the child's personal life unless it's abusive parents, bullying or silly suicidal tendencies. Plus any point good bad amazing or silly don't matter they just kids
This comment is hidden. Click here to view.
Why can't people have opinions without being fired? So what she doesn't agree with it, she doesn't have to, move on. Now she's been fired and probably will find it hard to get another job because her freedom of speech is being taken away by children.
Don't forget freedom of speech comes with consequences. Teacher exercised her freedom of choice when she told that kid about how homosexuality is bad. In return she got consequence of being fired when those three brave girls exercised their right of speech. Freedom of speech applies to all not only those who you agree with.
IAin'tWoke, This holiday season, you're free to tell your colleagues' kids that Santa is fake and can go fuck himself. I don't recommend it, as the First Amendment does not apply to the workplace. Plus, I think it's immoral for an adult with authority over children to bully them.
freedom of speech is that the goverment can´t censore the public news and events, not that you could be an asshole to anyone just beacouse you have a mouth
Which is why I'm so glad that hate speech is a crime in the UK. We have freedom of speech but there are consequences for anyone trying to stir up hate.
We need to come up with a good definition for freedom of speech for the common people and when and how it is appropriate to use it. This woman was mean, and critical and hurtful to a child, put aside opinions on the content, is that the kind of person you want anywhere in your child's classroom? Teachers are supposed to be nurturing, not standing on a soap deriding a child for his parents way of life. It certainly isn't her place to try to shame the child. Again, take away the lifestyle issue and think about the kind of person you want teaching your children. I know I wouldn't want someone like this near mine, even if I agreed with their politics, hurting a child is never ok.
What? That's ridiculous. Of course she's allowed to have an opinion. She has no right to abuse her position by imposing that opinion on a room full of eleven year olds. It's people like you who make such a bad name for non-leftists, quit shooting yourself (and the rest of us by default) in the foot.
iblowsheep already asked this question and I answered it infra. No one is being fired solely for an opinion. See my other comment for further explanation.

No, the teacher did not deserved to loose her job. Students need to learn not to be so fragile, so easily offended.
The teacher should learn not to be so fragile that a thankful child sends her into a uncontrollable rage in which she has to be hauled out of the room still screaming. Imagine being so fragile about your beliefs that you need to destroy a child's happiness. I mean for someone who supposedly beliefs in an omnipotent and omniscient God, she sure had no faith that She would take of the child and instead she tried to play god herself. Sad.

You can think what you want, but surprisingly actions have consequences.

so three girls got a teacher fired and they're being lauded for it here on BP. can you sink any lower??

Well, what school doesn't long to employ a lawsuit-happy bigot.

i would stab the teacher behind the neck and say "HOW DARE U SAY THAT TO HIM!!!' if i were there
