Teacher Doesn’t Like This 11-Year-Old Being Thankful For Getting Adopted By Two Dads, So These Three Girls Get Her Fired

An 11-year old faced harsh judgement from a substitute teacher when he said during a class discussion that he was thankful for his two adoptive dads. The internet is applauding the swift response from his classmates who didn’t hesitate to defend him and report the teacher, as well as the undisclosed Utah school district’s decision to ban her from teaching there again after she tried to use the boy’s family as a negative example to push her anti-gay views.

The incident was reported by local news

Louis van Amstel, a professional ballroom dancer and choreographer who has appeared on Dancing with the Stars, and his husband of almost three years, are in the process of adopting the 11-year-old.

Van Amstel was notified of the incident by the school’s administration and proceeded to post about it on social media, becoming emotional over his son Daniel’s words. He also told local news that Daniel had been afraid to stand up for himself for fear of causing an inconvenience that would dissuade van Amstel and his husband from going through with the adoption.

The couple has since met with the parents of the girls who reported the substitute teacher, thanking them for raising kids willing to take the side of a peer who’s being bullied even if the bully is a teacher.

Louis van Amstel posted on social media about the incident

A Twitter user who commented on the news shared statistics revealing the disparity between how many children in the US are eligible for adoption, and how many are successfully adopted. The 11-year-old’s fear that his adoption would fall through after he has already been through two failed adoptions is sadly common—studies have found children over the age of 9 being adopted at a much lower rate than younger children, despite making up almost half of children in foster care.

Considering these statistics, it’s especially reprehensible that a person in a position of authority would turn a child’s joyful news that he’s being adopted into an opportunity to spread a homophobic agenda because the parents are a gay couple.

Commenters passed on their congratulations to the family on the adoption, and applauded the girls for standing up to an adult who should really not be working with children.

Here’s what some commenters had to say

But what’s worse about the whole situation, is not that we expect this from these types of people, is that she made this poor kid afraid his 2 dads will change their minds on adopting him and said he made her rant. I cannot think of anything more evil than telling a child who is so happy and thankful to finally be adopted by two loving parents, that they shouldn't be happy, and that the people adopting them are deviants, etc, etc, etc. I mean, seriously?! Thank goodness for those little girls for standing up to her, and doing the right thing. Also? Even if being gay were wrong, is it the kid's fault? I mean, whatever you may think of a person's life/options/ideas it's just stupid to shame his/her children. You really need to be a very bad, bitter, disgusting person to ruin a kid's happiness instead of minding your own business and living your own life. I'm happy this bigot will never teach again. I am a Christian and have never had a problem worth homosexuality. I understand that the Bible says that it is a sin, but any good Christian also knows the verse John 3:16- For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, so that who ever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life. It says that God loved the world, not all the straight people in the world. The teacher deserved to be fired and those girls did the right thing. There is being a Christian and then there is being a zealot who thinks everyone wants to hear your bigoted opinion. Instead of judging each other, we need to just love each other.

Except the Bible does not say it is a sin. That was added in 1946 to the RSV. Any good Christian knows that Christ never spoke of relations of any kind between two men (if it was so important you would have thought to mention it), but be did give a fairly well known sermon at Har HaOsher in which he warned against judging others and suggest we be far more concerned with removing the log from our own eye than removing the splinter from our neighbor's. Luke 7:1-3.

As a Christian I still believe homosexuality is a sin. We may be born with that temptation, but to give in to it is the sin. But as a Christian, God never told me to judge people. He told me to love them. I would rather have a world full of happy children living with adopted gay parents, than to have 1 child grow up not knowing what it means to belong to a loving family. People need to learn whats really important, and Christians need to remember WWJD. He'd love this couple for taking care of one of Gods children and showing them the love that we all deserve

Homosexuality is NOT a 'sin'. Nor is it a choice. Most people are born straight. Some are born gay, asexual, bisexual, etc. I repeat: IT IS NOT A *CHOICE*, and therefore, cannot be a 'temptation' to 'give into'. If a man falling in love with another man is a 'temptation', then so is a man falling in love with a woman. A person cannot help being born homosexual, anymore than they can help their gender, the colour of their skin, their eyes or their hair. Love between two consenting adults is beautiful. Love is love is love.

The best thing you can have happen is to witness someone, other than you, willing to stand up for your child. I was so proud of my son's therapist for standing up to a bully, his Special Ed teacher..my son is autistic. The teacher was not only read the riot act for her behavior in front of her boss, she was removed from special ed and eventually reassigned. I informed the school if she ever came in contact with my son again, I'd get lawyers involved.

When I was in high school I was bullied by a teacher. I had a men breakdown and had tried to take my own life, so I was in inpatient for a week. When I came back to school, I was told by some people that one of my teachers took about 20 minutes of a class period to talk s**t about me, saying all the stereotypes about mental illness.

I have my own views on homosexuality. I believe it to be immoral. I believe it to be sinful. But I ABSOLUTELY KNOW that it is NOT my place to try to make anybody else conform to my system of belief. I also know that, whatever my feelings on it, the LGBTQ+ community is not made up of subhuman troglodytes or some weird backwards subset of humanity - each and every one of them is a human being deserving of the same courtesy and respect that I expect. I don't have to agree with someone's lifestyle choices, but the only person whose every action I can control is ME. Far too many people *cough conservative fundamentalists* treat an action or behavior that they disagree with as if it was the sole defining character trait of another human being. I judge others on content of their character, not a cherry picked behavioral trait.

Why can't people have opinions without being fired? So what she doesn't agree with it, she doesn't have to, move on. Now she's been fired and probably will find it hard to get another job because her freedom of speech is being taken away by children.

Don't forget freedom of speech comes with consequences. Teacher exercised her freedom of choice when she told that kid about how homosexuality is bad. In return she got consequence of being fired when those three brave girls exercised their right of speech. Freedom of speech applies to all not only those who you agree with.

The teacher should learn not to be so fragile that a thankful child sends her into a uncontrollable rage in which she has to be hauled out of the room still screaming. Imagine being so fragile about your beliefs that you need to destroy a child's happiness. I mean for someone who supposedly beliefs in an omnipotent and omniscient God, she sure had no faith that She would take of the child and instead she tried to play god herself. Sad.

This beast of a woman probably thinks that the opposition she faced was simply the price she had to pay for "martyrdom." Her "persecution" will only strengthen her resolve during her next "mission." B***h, my God would never.

Bravo to those 3 girls. Bravo to that school. Shame on that horrid specimen of a 'teacher'. And may this little boy, his 2 dads, and everyone in their world, only have good things in their lives - because they clearly deserve it.

I will say it . Take your homophobic opinions and shove them up your a*s. This is from a straight guy. I don't care who or what your sexual preferences are. I don't care if you are straight or gay. You are always welcome in my home. Just don't bring your feelings of child perversion and or woman/man abuse. I'll beat your a*s!

Luke 7:1-3.

These girls should get guaranteed full scholarships to the school they want and the teacher should be fired and should be able to not teach ever again at any school in any state

These girl are real heroes and how wonderful they turned an ugly situation into something good. I wish them and the boy all the best. But seriously, 100 000 kids a year's up for adoption and only 50 000 are adopted? Where are all these pro-life people? Why aren't they adopting them all?

I'm not surprised to see this incident was in Utah. I lived there for many years - some of the most hypocritical people I've ever met live in Utah. They need to practice what they preach in the predominant religion there. So happy this little boy was adopted and SO proud of the three girls that stood up to the teacher!

Does Ellen have a vagina? She's a woman, NOT a man. She would have Mr Johnson & the boys if she was a man.

The best news besides the adoption being finalized here, is that the hateful woman who went on this tirade has been fired by the agency that apparently outsourced the subs and was responsible for the sub assignment.

There is a difference between having an different opinion and telling a KID he shouldn't be happy to have a loving family. You can think what you want, but surprisingly actions have consequences.

Gays should not adopt children. I guarantee that boy will be taught to be gay. It's a man and a woman, NOT a man and man or woman and woman. The Old Testament says, "Man shall not lay down with man."

The American who implied these girls should get college paid for for this act of kindness....theyll already get that, they live in Sweden where college is free. You don't need to win some birth, athletic skill, superior intelligence or viral lottery to afford an education there.

Sure whatever she said was likely correct but... none of her business. Better to just roll eyes and move on. Being paid to teach not give opinions outside the curiculum or give a s**t about the child's personal life unless it's abusive parents, bullying or silly suicidal tendencies. Plus any point good bad amazing or silly don't matter they just kids

Sad.
