The universe is full of stuff. And some stuff is certainly more useful and more necessary than others. There are things that we need and have, then there’s stuff that we know we need, but don’t have, and then there’s stuff we know we don’t need.

But wait, there’s more. There’s also a fourth category—the stuff we are certain nobody on this planet really needs but for some reason exists. This is what Twitter has been discussing in a recent viral trend under the hashtag #StuffThatShouldNotExist.

Recently people started naming things that should not exist, but for some unknown reason are a thing. Besides all those taking a jab at Twitter’s image centering AI and everything that is wrong with the world, they have also shared pictures of things like carpets in bathrooms, Nicholas cage sequin pillows, and everything else that is either creepy, ugly or just plain useless.

Bored Panda has compiled a list of some of the best entries in this new challenge, which you can peruse below. And while you’re doing that, why not also leave an upvote and comment under the ones you enjoyed the most!

Plastic itself is not a bad thing; its all in how you use (and dispose of) it. Plastic is one of the most useful and necessary inventions of the 20th century. Because of plastic we have ... -safety equipment, both personal and industrial -prosthetic limbs -artificial hearts -disposable (and therefore safer) syringes (essentially, plastic revolutionized the world of healthcare) -children's toys that don't splinter/rust and can be easily sanitized -cost effective building materials -etc, etc... A ban on plastic would change the world, but not in a good way.

There are good uses of plastic, but very few, and building materials aren’t it... unless we are talking about reusing other plastics that cannot be refashioned into the same products again. Though, when a house made of plastic “timber” catches on fire some day, the toxic output is going to be worse than usual house fires (which are bad already).

If we didn't have plastic everything would be too expensive for most people, and we'd have to go back to wearing animal skins/furs. I'm sure a lot of people would LOVE that...What we need to do is actually develop and use biodegradable plastics and 100% recyclable plastics all the time.

Also get rid of fast fashion. Those shitty "clothes" are made in China by a workforce that is more akin to slavery. They are made fast, so injuries are common and cheap so they fall apart after a number of washes. I had one Giant Tiger shirt disintegrate after 1 freaken wash. Many are made out of plastic which when washed sheds micro plastic into our waterways. FYI micro plastic has been both discovered in glaciers and in fetuses. Micro plastic can cross the blood barrier! It's f*****g everywhere and in everything. Some clothing stores don't even bother to donate their unsold stock and just send it to the landfill. A bloody waste. So you know what, I would prefer if we all wore leather and furs on the condition that those articles of clothing lasted us years and if/when we outgrew them, we'd pass them along to someone else.

In a very theoretical principle - yes. In reality, there's no way to have any plastic and not have it end up where it doesn't belong. 100 times over for single-use plastic.

We wanted to save the trees. We invented plastic. We should have stuck with paper and planted more trees. Hindsight is 20/20.

People are so far removed from how garbage works. Most of what you "recycle" ends up in places like this photo. Garbage does not disappear. It gets dumped on/in land or water. Sometimes it is burned... But most is just placesd somewhere else. Until you limit plastic products or develope a plastic type product that is 100 % biodegradable this will happen.

I don't think there should be a 100% ban on plastic, because idk if that would be doable. A lot of very important products have to be made from plastic (like medical devices). The key is to just reduce plastic consumption by recycling, making products that don't need to be made from plastic out of other materials, and using biodegradable plastics when applicable.

There are uses it is best for - like medical supplies that have to be single use and hygenic. But soooo many things could be replaced by glass or metal packaging, less plastic packaging (like ridiculous packaging on something like a USB stick) or no packaging at all. And that's just packagaing. Then there is the products themselves - much of it could be paper, glass, bamboo, wood, metal if only it could be done for a similar cost. Unfortunately most people in the world aren't wealthy enough to buy 'eco' products all of the time.

I think the problem isn't plastic itself, rather the entirely improper and uncaring way it is disposed.

I think it is the way it is disposed of, but also the unnecessary/ hard-to-recycle packaging of some things. Some things come in a big packet, just to make them look impressive in the shop.

The biggest problem with most plastics is the refusal of almost everyone to properly recycle, not the plastic itself. Plastic bottles are lighter, less likely to break, less dangerous if they do break, etc. IVs with glass or paper tubing? Artificial limbs that can't be made aesthetically pleasing, giving someone a better quality of life? I agree we've gone overboard with plastics, but some uses are good and even beneficial.

No the biggest problem is that it can’t not biodegrade and should not be used unless absolutly nothing else can replace it and that item is absolutly necessary ... recycling is good but it is only a band aid on a missing limb

Plastic is useful for some things, but the amount we use is unacceptable. I think it's just that people are too lazy to recycle their trash. C'mon people, don't complain if you don't want to help change it!

The locals are contributing to this too with their own neglect. The animals will consume the plastic and die a terrible death and the humans who eat them or drink the milk will have adverse results as well. Humans are the most species on this planet and will eventually destroy their own nest, move off the deadened planet to another and possibly meet up with another species who will annihilate them all too after all..

Deplorable. Buy plush creatures made from recycled plastic bottles. They are very soft and cuddly and kids love them. They are sold by a number of different sources. but some if. the sellers put a portion of the purchase toward saving the oceans.

Manufacturing of plastics needs to stop. Full STop. There are alternatives now. In fact, humanity needs to stop making anything that does not biodegrade fully in a short amount of time (not a century or a millennium). It is decades past the time when this should have been a priority. Edit: I would add that deforestation also needs to stop. There is no need for it when hemp and seaweed alternatives are available.
