“You Are In The Wrong Profession”: 17 Y.O. Gets Sent Home For Her Turtleneck Plus Dress Combo, Causes Backlash

School and education are some of the more important cornerstones of society—they not only teach us theoretical subjects, but also give us the skills to navigate the world later on. Or at least, they should. Of course, no student is the same, we all have different strengths and goals, and ultimately, our aspirations determine what we take from our education. However, it’s likely we all agree that school shouldn’t be a place where a child’s confidence is stripped from them.

Perhaps one of the reason why society holds schools in such high regard (and also up to a certain standard) is because, more often than not, they help shape the person. Yet there are instances when school becomes the source of insecurity for the youth. That’s exactly the case with a 17-year-old high school senior who was sent home due to inappropriate attire.

More info: Facebook

A 17-year-old high-schooler was sent home after a teacher deemed her clothes distracting

A student in Kamloops, British Columbia, was pulled from school and sent home because her teacher decided her clothes were inappropriate and might be distracting. But it wasn’t that there was anything wrong with the outfit itself—17-year-old Karis wore a white turtleneck underneath a black knee-length dress. Generally speaking, there wasn’t any excessive show of skin or anything like that, but the teen still had to go home in tears.

Her father took it to the internet to protest this decision with a video that went viral

“This is unacceptable. We shouldn’t treat our females like this. We shouldn’t be telling them they can’t dress a certain way. This is absurd,” said Christopher Wilson, the girl’s father. “After a short period of time, she was centered out by the teacher and was told the outfit she was wearing made or could make her or the teacher’s assistant, who was a male, feel uncomfortable.”

Wilson raised the question of whether people bothered by such attire should even be teachers

“If you’re a teacher and you’re distracted by clothing your students are wearing, then you are in the wrong profession,” said Wilson. “Maybe you should try something new.” The girl’s outfit allegedly reminded them of lingerie, mostly due to the lace that was on the dress, but the complaint about its inappropriateness raised a valid question about educators being uncomfortable in the presence of teens.

The school is now facing backlash from the community, with students organizing walkout protest

The school said it has rules against clothing that might hinder teaching and learning, but as Alex Dolson from Kamloops Sexual Assault Center pointed out, the girl wore a turtleneck under the dress, so it shouldn’t have been against any of the rules. The students of the school even staged a walkout to show support for Karis, protesting against the unfair punishment, holding signs saying “I am not my dress” and “My education is more important than what I wear.”

Some of the students protested by dressing in similar fashion

School District No. 73 stated it’s taking the matter seriously and is currently reviewing the incident. Wilson admitted the vice-principal and principal have handled the situation well, and the family even heard from the school district superintendent. According to the father, once asked about it, Karis wanted “to make sure this kind of thing doesn’t happen to the students that come after her.” Wilson added that if this situation would change something for at least one person, it would be worth it.

The outrage extended to different social media platforms, critizing the clothing censure

The incident sparked a discussion about what is appropriate behavior for both students and teachers. The punishment for this seemingly innocent outfit was met with outrage on social media, with people questioning why female outfits are still being judged so harshly in this day and age.

And here’s the video of Christopher Wilson addressing the issue

The incident earned dual response from people online

It's only distracting if you look at minors in that way - end of.

I'm really struggling to see what is so inappropriate and the closest I can come up with is that a "slip" is underwear - at least they were when I was growing up (a long time ago); they were worn under jersey material dresses to prevent excess clinging to curves (creating VPL among other problems). The lace on the bodice part is a clue. But fashions have changed, and as long as no part of the dress below the waist (since above the waist is covered by her sweater) is see-through, there is nothing here that is offensive or inappropriate.

Ummm.... the lace is seen on many regular clothes, too. I have that lace neckline on a spagetti-strap *dress* in my close right now. It's not black. But that's the only difference.

There's nothing wrong with a school having a dress code (although it wasn't stated in the article if they did or not- maybe it was just the teacher's opinion), but the way the teacher ridiculed the teenager in front of the class was not okay at all.

In what way would this violate a dress code? She's fully cover from neck to knees. The article says her clothes were cited for "being distracting" not for "violating dress code". The teacher was out of line and if he found that outfit "distracting" he has a problem and maybe shouldn't be around minors.

Bro just focus on the lesson and stop focusing on the god damn child. And don't send them home for it, that's absolute bull crap Insane, they gotta get fired. Oh yeah and one more thing, one of the tweets were right. It isn't a 17 yr old girls JOB to make the teacher feel comfortable, they don't give a living crap.

The problem here is not that a girl is dressing inappropriately - it is that a teacher is sexualising school kids and blaming the kids for it. Instead of demonising girls, how about we teach boys not to objectify them? Just a thought.

As a male teacher in a K-12 school, I find this insane that it even happened! No one who loves education and who loves sharing that education with others should EVER be going out of their way like this to embarrass a student and prevent her from taking part in the class. Disgusting. The school clearly doesn't have a uniform and no dress code on earth who deny that sort of modest outfit. Like they mentioned in the article, it is covering shoulders to knees and last time I checked, we are not living in Puritan England. It is crazy to me, both as a person and educator, that we still run into these issues! At a school that I worked at previously (with a uniform), a teacher made all the students (boys and girls) kneel on the floor and measured their skirts and shorts to make sure that they were no more than 4 inches from the ground! It was bizarre to say the least, more like an abuse of power. Love your material, love your students (in an appropriate way), be an EDUCATOR.

Oh hellll no. First off, there's nothing even "remotely" inappropriate about that outfit. And even if it is was revealing, that still wouldn't be an excuse for a teacher to be creeping on a student and blaming her outfit for his twistedness. No matter what you wear, you are never "asking for it."

So let me get this straight: • If a girl shows any skin, it's inappropriate. • If a girl covers up, it's inappropriate. • If a girl wears something comfortable, it's inappropriate. • If a girl, it's inappropriate?? I'm starting to think conservatives need to just stop trying to pretend and come out and admit that what they really mean is "if you're not a wealthy white man, you should be property". Disgusting. It's no wonder this country is going down the toilet so quickly. So much religious conservatism corrupting the political landscape with its sheer, unabashed idiocy.

this is stupid... turtlenecks are perfectly fine, not exposing anything, not revealing in any way, therefore idk how there is a problem. anyways, the age old excuse that itll 'distract boys' isnt the girls problem. she shouldnt be sent home, the boy should, and he should stay there till he learn self control. and if teachers deem shoulders or any other part of a girl/woman 'distracting' he shouldnt be any where near women.

Do we also send home male students with muscular, athletic bodies who wear tight t-shirts because they might distract a female teacher? No. No, we don’t. Yet we subject female students to blame and humiliation because an adult male cannot be expected to control his inappropriate sexual urges towards an underage student. What the actual f**k?

Well sure, she's covered all the way up to her neck, but did did leave her knees exposed, how can any teacher withstand that? Best to wear a burka so teachers don't need to be responsible for their own sexualization of teenagers.

My daughter in middle school wore leggings (they were allowed),a turtleneck with a dress over the top. She got in trouble for the outfit because the dress was over the leggings. It was winter. She either had to remove the leggings or get into trouble. This didn't set well with me because leggings were ok to wear but not under a dress????? I told them she would not be changing or getting into trouble and if they pushed it I too would push it. But in the summer guys were wearing their pants pulled down or T-shirts they cut the whole side out but that was ok!

Back when i was in school, the dress code regarding shorts was that they had to be longer on you than where your fingertips were when standing straight. For some reason, women's shorts mostly seem cut shorter than that. I think it's a ridiculous standard. 15 years prior to my term in high school, athletic shorts for both men and women were disgustingly short, and students there wore them. I failed to see what the problem was.

So, here is something I find odd. I was 14 in 1974. I had a lovely outfit my mother made me. It was "palazzo pants" (google that one) with a halter top that tied around the next and my waist. My back was completely bare - but it was a back. Did I get sent home? No. Did anyone comment on it? With the exception of my french teacher who thought it was beautiful, no. And when I was in high school, we wore tank tops that had spaghetti straps ALL THE TIME. Now if you even think about wearing those, you get sent home. I would have thought we would progress, not go backward.

My older sis wore a tube top to school in junior high, and she was, er, well-endowed for her age. Nobody blinked. It covered what was considered "black box" material (referring to th eblack box put over such body parts in photos, etc.).

Also so what if he is distracted? It’s Gen Z. They have phones. They’re already distracted. And if they wanted to look at girl’s legs or butt or boobs, they can just open Instagram and see millions of young women BEGGING for attention at any moment. They don’t need to see that student in a skirt to be distracted.

I agree about the bit about (rape) victim blaming. If wearing clothes X distracts, then if she keeps wearing X and gets assaulted it is her fault??? No, the one who can't control himself if a female body is visible is too blame. I'd say turn it around. Dress as sexy as possible and then teach people to keep their urges under controls. (To ask them to stop looking is a bit too much then, if I see something exceptional I keep looking to).

Imagine you are an adult & an educator and your reaction to a child’s clothing is that your coworkers may become sexually distracted or even aroused. Is this not wholly a statement on how you perceive your coworkers? Or is it an issue you have with your own body and the experiences you’ve had when men aren’t held accountable?I don’t see how this response had anything to do with the student.

With everything going on with the pandemic, the focus of teachers should be on the students' health and well-being first and foremost. With all the stress of the world, your priority is to control what kids (mostly female students) wear? Nope. That's not right.

A TURTLENECK is now sexual b/c it is under a dress. Newsflash: Went to a Catholic school and in winter we were encouraged to wear turtlenecks under our "jumpers" (for the UK crowd: An ugly plaid dress thing without sleeves). If nuns were okay with a turtleneck under what's essentiall a dress ---- and you can't get more modest in how she covered up under that lace neckline ----- then everyone else needs to chill the f*** out.

I'd be more pressed if it were something more scantily clad. Mini skirt + Crop top Short shorts + Sports bra. Mini dress + heels and stocking. However, she has something under a Long dress, barely any skin is showing... Girls in the past were practically mandated to wear dresses, and now that's against a Private law. How damn ironic. Did the school board ever think, if a Teacher is to feel "Uncomfortable" by STARING at a LITTLE GIRL'S attire long enough to FEEL a certain way, they didn't think this feeling would be Hormones? What would make it worse, does the man have a Wife? She must be sick looking at him after this. For real man, if a Teacher Feels like Girls being Females is an Issue, HES THE DAMN ISSUE feeling like he wants fulfill his Urges of being a Twisted person. Fire him, immediately, and Investigate the board.

It's interesting because the "no distracting attire" or whatever is definitely a rule at my school, and I had never thought about it the way the father did, that it shouldn't be an ok rule in this modern day and age. (Innocent little me assumed it was for things like... I don't know, those changing sequin shirts; something that the student could be fiddling with rather than paying attention. Not anything that makes (or "might make") a teacher "uncomfortable" without violating any other more specific rule of the dress code!)

Here's an idea... almost everyone that age has a cell phone, if any teacher does this in the future, pull out your cell phone (right there in class) dial 911 and tell the operator an adult teacher is being sexually inappropriate to an underage child and someone is needed at *this* school. The ensuing chaos from even one call would rapidly change how these things are handled.

If it makes HIM uncomfortable how is that HER problem? If he is uncomfortable it means he is thinking about it and thinking about it sexually and he can't stop himself so he wants her to stop before he can't control his urges. That's what I am gonna believe. If it was my daughter, then my husband, my son who would be 14 at that point, and I would find matching outfits to hers and arrive at his doorstep. She isn't naked. First, there should be no "females need to change their outfits based off male thoughts" but if they can't get themselves to so that, males would at least need to have the same rules. Only once had I seen it broken|enforced at my schools, 8th grade 1998. No belly shirts or bra-straps or tank straps showing . One girl wore a long-sleeved see through black shirt and tank. She had to grab a spare sweatshirt for thr tank straps. She lost her match despite speaking up.

If a teacher sees a student being distracted by another's clothing either positive or negative then the teacher needs to speak to the student being distracted after class about the behavior. Not in the middle of a class. Just say "X, I saw you were distracted by Y in class today. Can you tell me what the issue was?" Then let X state what the issue was about. Cloths? Hair? Comments? And what would be the best solution. Should Y be made aware or issue? Should Y just be left alone? And also please let's address the parents for buying the clothes an letting the child/teen go to class in an outfit that might cause issues. A slip dress over a turtle neck is fine in general. If it's not breaking a dress code leave it alone. Kids have enough body issues to deal with than to be singled out. Just mention to the parent they maybe the dress could be a little longer or less body forming, over singling out a child. After all the parents are the parents.

I would be more pressed if she was wearing a Crop top, and Mini Skirt, or short shorts and a Bra, but this is just wow. Girls in the past could only wear dresses, now in 2021, they can't because Teachers would sexually assault them, claims that school. So now, parents are forced to be worried about the Educational daycare they send their kids to. Each Educational board's Judgement needs to be 99% precise, and Not Zealous for self benefit. Teachers should be background checked. Was the Teacher Married too? His wife must be sick to look at him.

stop sexualizing young students. The fact that teacher looked at an underage girl and immediately thought of lingerie and how it made them uncomfortable and sent them home as if they were the problem you’re so screwed up. any teacher that sexualizes a student is a pervert and shouldn’t be a teacher.

No one seems to be talking about the fact that on top of everything else, she missed a day of school, too. That's her education. It's been thoroughly studied that being made to feel ashamed or embarassed about their clothing and being sexualized have long term impacts on their ability to concentrate on schoolwork.

dress codes: they should not be used to prevent 'distraction' no matter which party (buys, girls, staff) you are in. if that is what your dress code is for, then you need to rethink your priorities. under NO CIRCUMSTANCE should someone be sent home for what they wear. this is putting their wardrobe ahead of their education which is NOT COOL. ( don't like the idea of suspension at all though its kinda dumb) dress codes should be encouraging students to show respect to themselves. each person is precious, and dress codes should be providing guidelines to help people see themselves as human beings instead of objects. its about allowing self-worth to shine through and schools need to recognize that and not just give the "its distracting' excuse

That's interesting. Another post was about a woman who had white large breast size and didn't wear a bra but all was covered with a blazer and nothing was to see. There all people were like how she dare. How can I write that it's okay as long as there is no dress code and she has all covered. Here people are in the side of the girl (which I am by the way also), just... At teens it's okay for you but at adults not.

THIS IS NOT A DRESS, this is a slip, so basically underwear. Teacher's reaction was a bit over, but still - it is not a thing you wear OUTSIDE of your bedroom. It's basically like allowing your kid wearing undies on their pants.

Maybe daddy should advise his "beautiful, 12th grade daughter" not to go to school dressed like a hooker. That is not a "dress", that is a slip undergarment worn over the turtleneck, but a slip undergarment nonetheless.

To be blatantly fair the dress does look like a night dress / slip dress that is meant to be worn underneath another dress or to bed . Teens dress in fashions that make them feel comfortable and to have an identity uniquely to themselves- jezzzz I wore bright purple eye shadow to school and a singlet without a bra once ! Had the teacher following me around telling me that was highly inappropriate and to go home ! At the time I was super offended and now I look back in embarrassment as it really was ! This dress and turtle neck combination looks fine - if the school is that concerned then maybe they should have a uniform policy .

I brought this article up to my husband, and he had quite a good argument. They say the dress looks like lingerie, and is inappropriate for school. We all feel like "she's completely covered, why is it inappropriate?" and my husband answered "Pretty sure a guy wearing what looks like a Speedo over his sweatpants like Superman would be told that was inappropriate too".

But, she followed the dress code, just as if a guy wore a Speedo over sweatpants would be doing as well. The problem is that the teacher objectified the student, even though she is dressed appropriately. She isn’t wearing lingerie, so you can’t really make that argument.

Ah, uniforms. Such a good idea. Everyone dresses the same, saves on clothing bills, no one feels 'lesser than' because they're poorer than the rich kids, and develops school pride. No one is distracted by anything, especially in terms of how much skin is showing or if the uniform is 'appropriate' or not. And the uniform can be made to fit any and all religious or gender requirements. A child's personality and individualism is expressed through their school work and creativity and in the clothes they wear outside of school.

First of all I'm guessing the problem was that she was actually wearing a slip. They call it a dress but, it appears to be a slip that goes under a dress, typically. Secondly, I would have sent her home because this is outfit is a cousin to wearing socks with sandals. This is a crime against fashion!

1. It’s not a slip. They said it wasn’t a slip, besides it’s not see through. So it was wrong to call her out when she followed the dress code 2. You don’t get choose what she wears.

I am wondering however why she is wearing a negligé over a turtleneck and the first thing both parent and kiddo do is stir up as much attention as they can. I'm not saying the teacher is right, quite the opposite, I am however questioning what her and her dad's motivations are. It seems like a very uncomfortable combination to wear and it is uncommon to wear a commonly accepted undergarment as a dress. But. You do you. That's not a problem of course, so the teacher is an idiot, but it is noteworthy in the context of this whole story. People do a lot for attention. Yes, to me both sides can be idiots and both sides are then harmful to what you're trying to change.

It does look like an undergarment called a slip. Whether it is actually a slip, I don't know. It kind of like how a bikini is outerwear when it is often the same cut and function as underwear. If it is a slip, it would be a bit like wearing your underwear on the outside of your clothes. Ok for superheroes, probably not the best attire for school. Unless the "dress" is sheer enough to show underwear, I would call it a dress and call it a day. Kids make weird clothing choices. Its part of their progression to adulthood.

Lots of people here calling the teacher a perv, but the story brushed over the fact that the teacher in question was female, not male. She was concerned that the outfit would be distracting to others, so she made assumptions about how it impacted the boys and her male teacher's assistant.

“After a short period of time, she was centered out by the teacher and was told the outfit she was wearing made or could make her or the teacher’s assistant, who was a male, feel uncomfortable.” It says "could make her OR the teacher’s assistant, who was a male, feel uncomfortable.” Women can be pervs too. She shouldn't have been thinking that way in the first place.

That is not a dress, that is a sexy night-gown. It reveals and accentuates every curve on her body and the contrasting white turtleneck only works toward exacerbating the sexyness. That kind of attire is not appropriate for going out, let alone to school.

She isn't walking around in a slip though. She is covered up to her knees, and the fact that her teacher thought it resembled a slip, even though she isn't wearing one is objectifying a student. Her outfit looks like a normal lace dress, a little bit thin straps to some, however, she is wearing a turtleneck underneath.

Does your school still have a dress code for non uniform day? When I was at school, there were still rules about what was acceptable for non uniform days - no t-shirts with slogans (to get around the offensive ones), no open-toed sandals, no showing underwear and no camouflage. You find similar rules in many less formal workplaces too.

Probably for the first time ever I disagree with public opinion. I think the Teacher was right to send her home, her dress is distracting because it straight-up looks like lingerie. Everyone seems to instantly think that the Teacher is wrong and assume he's some kind pervert, but they don't seem to realize that any adult of his generation and older, regardless of gender, is going to look at her and immediately think she's wearing lingerie and that its inappropriate. Especially for a 17 year old girl, what the hell are her parents thinking letting her walk out the door like that. It doesn't matter that its knee length or that she had something underneath it, it looks like lingerie. Its inappropriate for a school setting. It's distracting because it is obviously a sexual item of dress that a young girl should not be wearing, period. If she wants to wear that kind of thing, wear it outside of school.

I don't see how a dialog is even necessary, she's wearing a turtleneck with long sleeves and a dress that goes down to her knees, if the teacher can't stop sexualizing her because he sees lace on her dress, then that doesn't sound like the girl's problem.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with what she is wearing. I would like to see exactly what rule she was breaking with her outfit. What I do take issue with is this "walk out" the students are doing. If you look at their signs you'll notice a few that state "My education is more important than what I wear." If their education was so important, they wouldn't be walking out of school.

When did this become about conservatism? how is this about politics and religion now? I genuinely do not understand why it can’t be about just one thing. I don’t understand how all these things are linked... bruh

this is stupid... turtlenecks are perfectly fine, not exposing anything, not revealing in any way, therefore idk how there is a problem. anyways, the age old excuse that itll 'distract boys' isnt the girls problem. she shouldnt be sent home, the boy should, and he should stay there till he learn self control. and if teachers deem shoulders or any other part of a girl/woman 'distracting' he shouldnt be any where near women.

His wife must be sick to look at him.

dress codes: they should not be used to prevent 'distraction' no matter which party (buys, girls, staff) you are in. if that is what your dress code is for, then you need to rethink your priorities. under NO CIRCUMSTANCE should someone be sent home for what they wear. this is putting their wardrobe ahead of their education which is NOT COOL.

Well. it's the USA. The country where students get sent home because the teacher can''t control his perverted mind, where girls are raped by "promising students" without any consequences, where members of congress stalk and attack survivors of a school shooting and where perverts can openly show their support for rape and rapists. Do you really expect us to be shocked or even surprised?

It's just a turtleneck- What's the problem with it? They're putting their attention on the girl instead of their job? The teacher even said it was distracting?? That were their thoughts, and they blame the student?

I dont think its "distracting" but it is also not according to dress code - its more of a party dress than a casual school dress? If that was the point of the teacher I would understand, but dont call it "distracting"!

Looks clothes and everything aside they could be naked and it dont matter cause first and foremost the job is to teach... ideally the point of teaching is not to s**t on students which was how my schools operate and now apparently the schools I went to are psuedo prisons with cameras, hall monitors and students can't leave school grounds and so on and so on the s**t is stupid as f**k. Reminds me also of the time my friends kid dont recall exactly but think it was detention or suspended for sexual harassment... kid was a f*****g toddler! Playing with other toddlers.

But it doesn’t matter. She’s fully covered, up to her knees and shoulders. The fact a teacher can look at fully clothed minor is objectification of a student. It’s a lace dress over a turtleneck. There isn’t anything wrong with that.

Why is she wearing her underwear on the outside of her shirt? That "dress" looks like a slip. She's not making a fashion statement, she's advertising.

That is such a disgusting comment. Yes, it does look like a slip - that was my first thought when I saw it - but she's not wearing anything remotely revealing. To say that she's advertising is a really gross way to think about it.

Messed up, but did the father need to take to facebook? Call the principal, school board and the PTA. Talk to the people who can make the change. If you make a scene then everyone has to choose sides rather than opening up a dialogue.
