The student debt crisis has become one of the hot platform topics for candidates on the 2020 election circuit, but for the people it affects it is more than a campaign strategy. Tuition and fees at public and private schools rose at roughly three times the rate of inflation between 2007 and 2018, according to a College Board survey. Borrowers currently owe more than $1.5 trillion in student loans, an average of $34,000 per person.

The list below is a collection of tweets from people explaining how the U.S debt crisis evolved to this point or sharing their stories on how student debt has impacted their lives since graduating - and they may shock you or be sadly relatable.

I feel so bad for these young men and women. It's not f*****g fair! Starting your life with that much debt must be soul crushing. I feel so bad because when I finished grad school, I had $213 in my checking account and the only debt I had was to the electric company for $13. I wish there was something I could do for these kids.

This should be criminal, I don't understand why the politicians can't meet us half way on this. Why can't student loans be zero to super low interest rates. You pay back the $250k and call it settled (which is still alot' of money btw).

I'm fourteen, and I really want to be a special education teacher when I'm an adult, which requires college. I want to have a job that I love, but I can't imagine being that much in debt. Any time I bring it up to an adult, I'm told that I'll "figure it out" or that "I shouldn't be worrying about that yet". But considering the situation my country is in, I probably should have started saving for college two years ago :(

Must be nice to be one of the lucky ones. I went to college after raising my children and still ended up with $40,000+ in loans. Now my salary isn't enough to live and pay loans. Their "programs" do not help. Wish I had never gone to college. My Masters is worthless.

In Australia university was free until 1988, but now it is paid for by Government loans - but repaymemts don't start until your income is over a certain threshold. If you never reach that threshold, you never repay the debt.

If your payments are income based, your (compounded) interest will continue to accrue, which means your loan amount will be more when it's forgiven than when it was initiated. The government could have saved money by just paying for the tuition in the first place.

Sure, all you have to do is have a family member give you a house/condo to rent out while you live with other family members without paying rent. It's easy!

Yeah I hate articles like these. There was one with a similar head line and the guy lived in a retro 70s van that had a stove for three years. Others show couples that somehow get high paying jobs right out of college and they decide to live in a small apartment. The overall issue is that these people either lived like hobos or came from wealth and that's how they did it.

Wait a minute...she finishes college, snags a good paying job right away from her MOTHER, and gets to live rent free in basically first the MOTHER’S house, then her condo, with a husband who is most likely employed therefore bringing in money, they move someplace and rent the condo for more than they pay to live elsewhere. So this gal has THREE incomes to draw from to make her payments. Of course she could pay off the loan! Duh!

The fact that she had enough money in the family to pay off her loans is not the problem. She got what everyone should have, regardless of socio-economic class - an education she could afford. The problem is that she is ignorant of the fact that nearly all other Americans cannot do what she did, so saying "anyone could do it!" is a slap in the face.

Sooooo, this young lady had an incredible support system that essentially allowed her to pay her debt. I don't fault her for being able to rely on others for support but she didn't do this alone. Many people, probably most, don't have anything like her support system they can rely on.

This is selectively edited. Go look at the real article. Yeah they had a giant helping hand from mom, but the apartment was only $13k. People are probably thinking it's some $200k thing. Not everybody has a parent who can help out with even a dime, and that "anybody can" needs a slap upside the head, but the article itself isn't nearly as bad as this post makes it out to be.

Original balance $42,500 (2008). Balance due today $51,187. Amount paid so far $43,275. In my entire working life, I’ve never gone more than a month without a job. I’ve faithfully paid my loans since 2008. I’m now a high school teacher with a never ending #studentloan debt. How do I conscionably encourage my students to pursue college, knowing that the #studentdebt crisis is as bad as it is? Can a #millionaire or #billionaire bail me out? If we can bail out banks and #wallstreet, why can’t we help out young men and women across the country suffering from the predatory lending and crippling debt. Oh and the kicker....my college told me I had to get private loans so there is no forgiveness. Ever. Can the government help? #privateloans #salliemaeteam #salliemae #navient

I wasn't able to get much work while I was earning a master's degree (and couldn't get decent work with my bachelor's)--only ones who would talk to me were temp services, and they barely let me have anything, then I got criticized for supposedly choosing temporary over permanent work when the realty was choosing temporary work over no work.

I've taken nearly $60k for my undergrad and grad and have paid all my (minimum) payments on time and my experience is nothing like what I read on all these sites. The federal student loan interest rate is far less than any unsecured loan rate, or that of a car loan. Yet people don't think twice about running out to get a car and pay $500 + a month on something that will depreciate before it is paid off. An education is LIFETIME investment in you, your family and your earning potential. All that said, if you can't afford or don't want tens of thousands of dollars in student loan debt go part time for year and pay cash, or attend a less expensive school close to home so you don't have extra housing, etc. expenses. Again, I call BS on these people saying they've been paying for years and still owe more than they borrowed. Either your weren't always paying on time or you got private/unsecured student loans with astronomical interest rates.

I mean hindsight is 20/20. They were kids, they didn’t know. I paid a lot of tuition as I went and I still have 10k in debt even after attending my early years in community college. It’s okay to admit the system sucks. If people even have a way to get that deep in debt, something is wrong.
