We all love an underdog, don't we? Someone who won't be bullied, who will stand up for themselves and their rights in the face of all-powerful corporations and governments, they give us all hope that we little guys do have the power after all.

Often referred to as 'nail houses' or 'holdouts,' such as these have become high profile media sensations, particularly in China where the brave homeowners receive widespread support against the perceived bullying of the powers that be. Anyone who has seen the movie 'Up,' or Australian classic 'The Castle' will identify with this! These holdout cases most often happen when the government needs land for highway building or decides to do resident relocation of the whole village if the land that it sits on serves a purpose for mining or other heavy industries. Since selling property isn't something that can be forced, some people stand their ground, refusing to take the ridiculously small buy out cash.

Scroll down to see the astonishing examples below, and don't forget to vote for your favorite!

Man, maybe she's lived in there all her life! Maybe that's where she has all her.memories of her beloved ones.. I wouldn't like to think that a precious place like that would turn into a souless building...

wow. So that is how they got the inspiration for Up... having a elderly person that refused to sell their house although it was going to be taken down by a big company... I wonder if she met a scout and they went on a great adventure to Paradise Falls, meeting a talking down and a giant colored bird in the process..? Good job on this because she loves her house better than the million dollars she was offered.

I think she did right telling them to FO, her house is nice and shaded now against winter and hurricanes as the bigger buildings will shield her house against the worst of the weather.

She doesn't get to decide how much and they also don't move the house. None of this works that way. They tell you what they'll pay and it's up to you to relocate. You don't take your old house with you and they don't also buy you a new house on top of that. You take it or leave it. These people left it and I don't blame them. Sometimes you have to stand up for the little guy and I think it's great. It's not a ridiculous thing to do at all as some people are saying. People should learn a little more about Eminent Domain before they pass judgment. It's a nasty process.

that's not how it works although I realize you're being facetious. Eminent Domain is not always a very fair or nice process for the person being displaced.

What year was this? Average and nice houses where I live (Northern Virginia) easily cost $500,000 (the cheap ones) all the way up the $2.5M. And they are NOT mansions. You're lucky if you get 3 bedrooms.

It looks sad, lonely and cold, and I imagine dark as there is no sun shining to the house. There is no yard, no space, just cement surrounding her. I get not wanting to move because of the memories and the life she built with her family in that house, but it is not the same anymore. To me this home is now depressing, I wouldn't want to live in it. But then maybe for her the memories are too great to just let them be torn down.

These are termed in China as "nail houses", as in stubbon nails. Quite often the people in nail houses are not compensated or undercompensated for the loss of their homes and have nowhere else to go. Be stubbon or lose house, so therefore lose job and starve on the streets.

I think that picture is from 2011. It's still there but a road runs past and there's a sports complex opposite. I hope that brings Monsieur Oudjani plenty of trade! If you want to take a look on something like Google Maps, the address is 126 Rue de Tourcoing.
