Dating is tricky. You want to be yourself, but also impress the person; have a fun time without appearing aloof. Hold an interesting and meaningful conversation but not go too deep and bore them. A sprinkle of romance doesn't hurt too.
It's a delicate balance and to make matters worse, you have to find it with a person you don't know that well. So, not surprisingly, sometimes we go a little too far. And while nobody is safe from crossing the line, one Twitter user was interested in hearing how men do it.

A few days ago, @sohosatan asked everyone to share what was it that guys did on a date that seemed really weird, and got plenty of replies. 2,172 to be exact. Here are some of the most memorable ones.

We often use the word "creepy" to caution our friends about people to avoid. "Watch out for him," we warn a person we care about, "he's a total creep." But what, exactly, makes someone seem that way?
According to a study published in New Ideas in Psychology — the first-ever empirical study of "creepiness," its authors say — analyzed the perspectives of 1,029 women and 312 men with an average age of 29 to determine the most common markers of a "creepy" individual.
The results of the research show that men are more likely to be seen as creepy than women, and women who feel creeped out are more likely to also feel sexually threatened than men are.
Furthermore, unpredictability is often associated with creepiness, which we can see a lot in these tweets.
And it makes sense. Think about it someone laughing at seemingly random times or making sudden and unexpected attempts to hug you. A big part of the uneasiness they make you feel comes from not knowing what to expect from them next.
The researchers highlighted that these findings support the idea that being “creeped out” is a response that we evolved to pay more attention to something that could turn out to be a threat.
When your gut feeling tells you that something is off about someone, don’t instantly dismiss that reaction, even if you can’t pin down exactly why you have it — more often than not, it's there to protect you.
To identify the behaviors likeliest to make someone seem creepy, researchers instructed respondents to rate 44 different patterns on how likely they thought it was that a "creepy" individual would demonstrate them.

In my personal experience, any dude that self-identifies as "alpha", has antiquated views on gender roles, has little respect for women, and has a higher than average likelihood of getting into a fistfight with another dude over something idiotic. The only faster way to identify a douchebag is if they have the "sexy woman silhouette" somewhere on their vehicle. Guaranteed sex offender right there.
Calling yourself Alpha means no one else ever has or would. That's as bad as giving yourself your own nickname sheer douchery.

Lots of people lie about stuff on their dating profiles. Women do it as much as men. I had dates with women that lied about their age, posted photos that were 10 years old, saying they didn't have children when they did, and of course lie about their weight. The whole point of online dating is to find someone you are compatible with before you actually go on a date to avoid wasting time. I never understood why people lie on a dating profile when you know eventually you're going to have to meet the person in real life.
It's a little like lying on a resume: they believe they can explain it away during the interview. Not that I advocate lying on resumes.

I once dated a guy who I could never keep up with when he walked. He used to complain " Are you Chinese?" Found out later (after we had broken up) I had a muscle disease. In hindsight I should have said "A gentleman always slows down for his lady." I reconnected with him years later as a friend and he is not the same. He has matured, fortunately.
As soon as they refer to themselves as "Alpha" you know they're a bawbag. An "Alpha" Male would stick by the female to protect her, I really hate people that claim to be "Alpha or Sigma" when they have zero idea what it means to be those things.
I think these guys perform a service to humanity. The smart ones hide it until you have done something irreversible (or at least hard to undo)
This doesn't sound like the US. Physicians are licensed after their intern year (usually) but still have the rest of their residency (2-9+ years) before they are board certified and practicing in a speciality (not counting fellowship years for board certification in a sub-specialty). Most young physicians at this stage barely have time to sleep and eat, let alone date (God forbid they already have a family or SO). This sounds like a typical narcissist with a Napoleon complex that went into a field many type-A people go into (but most type A people are normal people). Maybe the OP included details about his profession to highlight his disdain for those not considered working professionals. Or maybe they also have a bit of a complex and wanted to stick it to other doctors too. Who knows. Guy sounds like an ass overall, doctor or not. That detail really isn't relevant.

1. He watches you before interacting. Being watched by someone before he introduces himself or joins the conversation can make your skin crawl — you're wondering, What is he thinking? while dreading that whatever it is, it's inappropriate.
2. He touches you frequently. Even a "friendly" hug or kiss on the cheek is unacceptable if it's not invited.
3. He steers the conversation toward sex. Unwanted intimacy can be verbal too.
4. He asks to take a picture of you. Unless you are balancing 10 plates on top of your head while also riding a unicycle, there is no reason a rando should want a photo of you.

6. He has greasy hair. Well, there are many possible explanations for having greasy hair, but let's just say it generally isn't a turn-on. Bad hygiene can be a sign that someone isn't aware of or doesn't care about the impression they make on others, a definite creepiness red flag.
7. He never looks you in the eye. This can come off shady and disengaged, as though he's plotting something.
8. He's significantly older than you. To be fair, this one doesn't make someone "creepy" in and of itself, but combined with other behaviors, such as frequent touching or sex talk, it can make someone seem predatory.
9. He shows little emotional expression. A deadpan stare is disconcerting. Again, what is he thinking — or hiding, for that matter?

On a first date, the guy told me about how much he loved meeting new people and hearing their stories. He spent the whole date telling me all the ways he loved to meet new people, through travelling, through backpacking, by renting out his house to back packers, through volunteering, he had even couch surfed, amazing! He spoke about himself so much he didn't ask about me once. Insufferable twat.
The physical assaults are horrible, the ego and insecurities are bad. Some of these are hilarious eccentricities that can totally define a couple. If my now wife didn’t find me doing backflips off her deck funny as hell we wouldn’t be together.
First date and he invited me to go bowling. I'm terrible at bowling but I can laugh at myself so okay . Sounds like a lighthearted date - talk some and also have something fun to do so I'm down. We get to the alley and he won't shut up about bowling - how he's been bowling competitively since was like 7 (we weee in our early 20s) - he tries to correct everything I'm doing and he's coming off very condescending. While he was driving me home his car ran out of gas and we had to walk something like 1-2 miles to the nearest gas station. Weirdly enough, that walk gave us time to talk about something other than bowling and we actually had a lot in common. TBH that walk was the best part of the date. We ended up dating for a year. (I just never went bowling with him again lol) We're still friends nearly 20 years later and we still make jokes about how getting stranded on the side of the road is a much better 1st date than bowling.
When I was 35, I went on a first date with a guy I met on a dating site. I was already wary of him, because his profile said he was 42 but only wanted to date women aged 25-35. I asked him why he had set 35 as his maximum age when he himself was older than that. His answer: "Well, let's face it. Women lose their looks a lot earlier than men." Then he confessed to me he actually, wasn't 42. He was 48. Obviously there was no 2nd date.
I went on a date once with a guy who told me that when he was 19 he took some pliers and took two of his teeth out because he wanted to put on braces. Yikes
I’m a teacher for a population of kids with diagnosed trauma and behavioral issues. I am also a human who endured a massive amount of trauma and developed pretty serious issues as a result…. And what I see is that society punishes people for having struggles. I see a lot of loneliness. I see kids playing video games instead of interacting in board game play….. as a result they do not learn social skills. You’d be surprised how important board games are for social development….. and I see where depression and mental health issues are all at crazy high frequencies in our population. But treatment for these issues is lackluster at best unless you can afford the best physicians. I also see where social media cripples social development and healthy adult expression….. I know this isn’t super rested to the article but. Just throwing it out there into the world and hoping our society and mental health supports and screenings improve soon.
My first date with my husband could've gone the other way for sure. He picked a super corny romance drama for the movie and we ate pizza. The movie and what he said were the issue, not the rest. I asked about what movie we'd be seeing and he told me romance "because girls like that stuff" and that he couldn't watch the only other romance because he'd seen it with his ex a few months back. I was offended and started making jokes about how he didn't need to lie about loving chick flicks because fragile masculinity. He laughed so hard he spilled the popcorn and we spent the rest of the movie making faces at each other and whispering jokes about the movie. We were alone in the theater! JS. Lol. Almost 15 years later and we still make jokes about that date. And him sticking his foot in his mouth bringing up the ex.
Back when dating was meeting people online chat rooms this guy and I chatted for 6 months, i thought we really clicked and so did he so we set up a date to meet. We exchanged photos prior and he wasn't what i normally went for but he was so nice. Well, we meet for a movie, i'd been catfished, the photo wasnt of him. He was massively overweight, cross eyed and had a hunch back. I was in shock. The entire date he said not a single word at all. After the movie he took me home, he walked me to my door (didn't talk the whole ride) finally he says "this isn't going to work out is it?" I said no and went inside. He sat outside my home in his car for a good 20 minutes then peeled out on my parents front yard. The next day he messages me saying he had such a good time and wanted to see me again. I was flabbergasted. I told him "no you didn't! you didn't speak a word, then you peeled out on my lawn!" he then says he didnt until i told him i watched him do it and he said i was mad.
This is sad. He sabotaged himself. Maybe if he had shared honest photos and made more of an effort on the date, it could have worked out.

Ha! Was meeting a guy in a place where food choices are very limited (somewhere in West Africa). I'm a vegetarian and he wanted to cook for me. He normally eats fish or chicken. In that place it was very difficult to find any sort of non-animal protein so I offered to settle for fish. I've resorted to eating fish while in West Africa in the past, because often the alternative would be plain white rice or naked fufu (not many vegs around). But he went "no, no! You should not change how you eat because of me!" and went out of his way to find some local cheese so he could cook a vegetarian meal for me. Now THAT's a keeper.
AM 6 ft and have datd shorter men. I don't care. But the point is, THEY did. One of them would not dance with me because I was taller.

A couple of the listed "red flag" items like awkward silence or inability to direct eye contact could also be social awkwardness or autism/similar. Speaking as someone on the spectrum. I've only ever had schoolyard crushes and one of the few dates I had in high school was a pity date. I'd like to believe that I am much more mature now and would like to meet someone to coffee or something.
Where in god's name are these women finding these guys!! I want to know so I can avoid them!

He took me to dinner and then asked if I wanted to go to an S and M club. What? Or the guy who I dated who talked about how much he hoped to get back with his ex wife. That was fun. The one who said women should not be allowed to own property. Yup. First date. If I ever have to be single again I will stay that way.
Is it wrong that I think sneaking out is sh*tty? Unless you suspect an immediate danger to your life or limb, man/woman up and say you aren’t feeling it and leaving. Or at the very least, leave then shoot a text and say “I’m not feeling it. I’ve decided to leave”. Or even ask the wait staff to give you 10 minutes and then tell your date you’ve left. Letting someone just sit there, particularly of a different gender when they can’t enter the restroom to check on you, is cruel.
It's a safety measure. You don't know them, you don't know how they'll take rejection. You don't know if they'll try to follow you home, harm you in the parking lot, or any number of other disturbing scenarios. Sorry, he's inconvenienced, but better than you dead or maimed.

When I was a teenager. My friend and I went on a double date. Her boyfriend brought his friend that was a few years older then me as a blind date. He was paying songs about giving head and other disgusting songs. I was so uncomfortable

Then we went to a restaurant where he texted his ex all night, had nothing to say, kept going to the bathroom I'm sure to do cocaine because he was fidgeting as all hell (plus he asked me to go back to his to party that way LOL), then when I told him I was gonna pass he freaked out and tried to blame me hahaha. I finished with the words 'act like a clown, attract a circus' because he had crazy exes apparently. 😂
I had multiple dates with a wonderful Woman. Spoke about insecurities, life goals and such. KABOOM, 3 kids and 3 Fathers. After 3 dates

The only really awful date I've had that is anywhere near as bad as these is the one date I had during the pandemic. It was in summer 2020 when things were loosening up. He basically said how he didn't take it seriously and so he was going to France where he could live with a friend in Paris while doing his studies online. Just, tons of travel plans with zero concern about anything going on.
Yeah . . . I think I dated these men . . . and my goodbye response has been: "I am single by choice; However, you, sir, are being rejected."
Very interesting and telling: "things men do on dates" - not "things that a man has done on dates" - why is it women are so anxious to extrapolate these actions to the entire gender, whereas when the shoe is on the other foot women are quick to point out that it was just that one crazy women, and the rest of the gender doesn't do that? Very interesting and telling: "things men do on dates" - not "things that a man has done on dates" - why is it women are so anxious to extrapolate these actions to the entire gender, whereas when the shoe is on the other foot women are quick to point out that it was just that one crazy women, and the rest of the gender doesn't do that? (note that I've completely abandoned hope of a non-sexist "things people have done on dates")
that's a long way to say "a woman didn't date me so now i hate all of them" but go off lad.
