50 Women Are Choosing Not To Shave For ‘Januhairy’, Share Pics Of Their Progress
Acceptance is all the rage these days. Everywhere you look, social norms, beauty standards, and 'taboos' are being challenged. Especially in regards to body image and cultural expectations about the ways beautiful women present themselves in public.
“It's about time too,” I hear many of you say. After all, we live in a free, individualistic society, and there should be no pressure to conform to unnatural or unrealistic 'standards' that were consolidated under an outdated patriarchal system. However, for the more conservative among us, these changes and challenges are happening so quickly that it can become disorienting. Perhaps there are more pressing issues than body hair we should all be focusing on?
The latest example of breaking down barriers comes, naturally, in the form of a pithily-named month. From 'Veganuary' to 'Decembeard,' any movement worth its salt seems to be couched in a punny and easily achievable 30-day package, and 'Januhairy' is no different. “This isn’t an angry campaign for people who don’t see how normal armpit hair or any other body hair is, but more an empowering project for everyone to understand more about their views on themselves and others,” British student Laura Jackson, gal behind the anti body hair removal Januhairy, wrote. The campaign's aim is for women to grow out body hair for one month to support Body Gossip’s education program, which encourages everyone to be the best version of themselves and “to rock their own brand of gorgeous!” A week into the month, beautifully hairy women are already posting progress pics. You can scroll down below to check them out yourself, and let us know your own thoughts on the natural beauty initiative in the comments!

The Januhairy Campaign
Natural Body Hair
eeeeek i’ve just learnt about januhairy!! it’s always so exciting for me to see new waves of this movement of body nonconformity. it’s gaining a lot of attention from the media which is EXACTLY what is needed. people need to be reminded over and over that what women choose to do with their bodies is THEIR OWN DAMN CHOICE. people need to see women who do not care to change themselves to fit our society’s bullshit beauty standards until seeing that becomes the norm. that is the only way we can change the standards
.
shave or don’t, i don’t care or judge you either way, it’s your choice! but i do encourage all women to think about the changes they make to their bodies and think about why they do it. who they do it for
.
personally, there are so many reasons i don’t shave my armpits and very few reasons why i would. but one of my biggest motivators not to is knowing that by not shaving i am actively choosing not to give money to companies, and the people who run them, that think that women’s bodies aren’t good enough the way they naturally are
If people don’t support woman showing hair then why did you click here!?
Going Natural For Januhairy
Hi I’m Laura, the gal behind Januhairy! I thought I would write a little about my experiences and how Januhairy came about... I grew out my body hair for a performance as part of my drama degree in May 2018. There had been some parts that were challenging for me, and others that really opened my eyes to the taboo of body hair on a woman. After a few weeks of getting used to it, I started to like my natural hair. I also started to like the lack of uncomfortable episodes of shaving. Though I felt liberated and more confident in myself, some people around me didn’t understand why I didn’t shave/didn’t agree with it. I realised that there is still so much more for us to do to be able to accept one another fully and truly. Then I thought of Januhairy and thought I would try it out. It’s a start at least . . .I have had a lot of support from my friends and family! Even though I had to explain why I was doing it to a lot of them which was surprising, and again, the reason why this is important to do! When I first started growing my body hair my mum asked me “Is it you just being lazy or are you trying to prove a point?” . . . why should we be called lazy if we don’t want to shave? And why do we have to be proving a point? After talking to her about it and helping her understand, she saw how weird it was that she asked those questions. If we do something/see the same things, over and over again it becomes normal. She is now going to join in with Januhairy and grow out her own body hair which is a big challenge for her as well as many women who are getting involved. Of course a good challenge! This isn’t an angry campaign for people who don’t see how normal body hair is, but more an empowering project for everyone to understand more about their views on themselves and others. This picture was taken a few months ago. Now I am joining in with Januhairy, starting the growing process again along with the other wonderful women who have signed up! Progress pictures/descriptions from our gals will be posted throughout the month. Lets get hairy

@i_am_morgie~ “…Imagine if everyone just decided that today was the day they loved themselves and embraced every part of them selves. Accepting and loving your body and your "flaws" because you know they are what makes you who you are. If you are focused on being true to yourself in every moment, you are less concerned what others think, which will lead to peace of mind. When you have nothing to hide and you can freely be yourself, there is a profound peace/confidence you will emanate to the world that will inspire others.”👏

All the girls joining in januhairy are shaving off their body hair on New Year’s Eve (Monday 31st) ready to kick start the new year with a new challenge!
We have many women who have signed up for this charity project so far, from the age range of 16-60! ✨💃✨💃 Sign up and join in while you can!
That’s great and all but number 7 is actually a woman who doesn’t shave and has been interviewed and blogged about it for years. That photo has been going in the web for ages and I bet the other photos are old as well since if you stop shaving in January, you don’t automatically get an amazing bush in weeks or even months! 😁💕

Letting Your Hair Loose
That's my photo, here's a description: "Well I've heard it's #januhairy now, so I decided to join. I had begun to shave in elementary school after I went to a swim class and one classmate asked me why I don't have shaved armpits. I still remember the feeling of surprise and humiliation that something is wrong with my body. At this age, you can easily get the impression that if you're not doing what everyone else is doing, something is wrong with you. I often heard in high school that I would be more attractive if I didn't have such hairy hands. With time, it gradually became clear to me that the main reason why I shave is mainly the inner pressure from this learned norm and the automatic expectation of the society. It sounds banal, but I think this pressure on women is really strong and unnecessary. Now I'm satisfied with all my hair because the hairs are normal. Peace out"

If you’re a woman - are you comfortable with your body hair? I try to be, but after almost 2 years of not shaving, I’m still insecure about it. I get really self conscious when wearing tops, and I usually opt for an option where my armpits are covered. I’m a little more confident about my leg hair, but not much. I wonder if it will ever be completely chill to show my body hair, or if I will keep feeling the pressure. I don’t think society is gonna change over night, but really hope to at least see some change in 2019. A girl can hope, right? For now I will just try to do my part in showing that body hair on women is ok ✨
Thank you for being honest about feeling insecure about it. I am the same way when I experiment with not shaving.

Great time with Freya a few weeks ago, during a brief parting in the stormy clouds in Plymouth
Just to let you you all know this is me and that i am happy letting my armpit hair grow and dying my head hair red. I do not do it for your acceptance or because you think I should dye my armpit hair too. I do it because sometimes i do not want to shave and like armpit fuzz :) Women do not have to have smooth armpits if they do not want to. You go girls!

New Year’s resolution for 2019:1. I’m not going to shave my legs. Why? Because I don’t know why I started to begin with. My 6yo felt my prickles on my legs the other day & I didn’t know how to explain that I needed to shave & I actually found myself not wanting to explain. It’s stupid that women do this. Trust me, this is a big deal. I’ve been so conditioned my entire life to care about how I look. Western culture puts way too much emphasis on image & I am trying to break that cycle for myself & my family. This is a start to being comfortable in my own skin, err hair. 😳
Beautifully Hairy
Normalizing Natural Body Image
This post is gonna be bold, and transparent. Cause that's what I'm all about.
For those who know me, you know I'm kinda a wild little hippie chic. 🌻
I'm not afraid to speak my truth, and that is that I love myself so fucking much, and I dont care who knows it.
Which leads me to this post..
In honor of #januhairy, I am sharing my why.
I grew up in an incredibly materialistic, ego minded family. Where you had to spend an hour minimum doing your face and getting dolled up to leave the house.
Walmart in PJs was just unacceptable..
Which leads me to my next point.
BODY HAIR.
The naturally growing stuff that sprouts from our pores. That was totally not okay. I was shamed from a very young age.. especially since I had undiagnosed Endocrine and hormonal disorders that I wouldn't learn about til my early 20's. I had hair on my chin, on my belly, even on my back and butt.
And because of my family's shame, I went to extreme lengths to remove it... trying Nair, bleach powder.. and mind you, I was about 13 at this point in my life.
Fast forward to today.
IDGAF what anyone thinks of my body, because I LOVE HER and that's all that matters.
I stopped shaving regularly around the time I had kids. At that point, my husband had seen it all, so what the hell?! My family would say things like, "OMG, what does your husband think?? Eww!"
First of all, why do you care what my husband thinks?
And second, I'll tell you. He worships me like the Queen Goddess I am.
Body hair does not define a woman. It doesn't make her lazy, it doesn't make her gross. We've had this stigma for far too long that women need to uphold this fantasy image and it's just not realistic.. I'm here to break the cycle and stand up for all you ladies in the back who had someone shame you for how your body looks, thus unknowingly creating an unhealthy self image within you.
It ends here.
Be proud of who you are! There's no one like you and you are beautiful! Dont ever let anyone make you think otherwise!!

I suddenly realised that I’ve never - not even once - seen my armpits in all their natural hairy glory. Isn’t that astounding when you think about it? That’s my entire life since I first picked up a razor in Form 1 - admittedly I started on my legs first - and you should’ve heard a few of my mates all up in arms, because you shouldn’t shave ‘til you’re Form 2 (apparently). I was cutting edge. Ready to embrace the hair free life. And not once did I question it. Because it was what you did right? I grew up with Dolly and Girlfriend magazines and no one was waving the “freedom of choice flag” in there. And thus the removal ritual began.

here is a fantastic body positive campaign happening right now called #januhairy which I'm totally loving! There is nothing gross or unhygienic about body hair whatever your gender happens to be. So here's me in my #bluesun #firefly shirt laughing at my own lil gingery tuft. Check out the hashtag or add your own post to the feed and be part of the conversation that changes the perception of femme body hair!
I stop shaving as soon as I start wearing jeans again. During summer I am in shorts so I shave but as soon as the weather changes, away goes the razor. I follow the sheep sheering calendar.

This ones for all you haters. Love me or hate me, either way I'm on your mind. ✌❤🙌💃
I was eating!!! For Christ sake... I didn't shave my legs for about a month, cause I am in a long term relationships and it's winter 😂 (yeah, I am lazy).. Do I have to post it on my Facebook for everyone to know too?
I'm removing hair regularly although I'm married and it's winter because I go to the swimming pool frequently and I can't mentally afford to look like a prehistoric specimen. *sigh* (no judgement for other women, just the way I see myself)
You have every right to feel the way you do and that should be respected like any other choice you make for yourself.
I go to the swimming pool regularly too, with my hairy legs and hairy pits and I don't look like a prehistorical specimen any more than you do 😘
Thank you, Jaguarundi and Kaisu Rei. I appreciate the support. Have a nice day!
Luckily for me over recent years since an early menopause my body hair has become almost unnoticeaple - even armpits - not needed to shave them for a number of years. Interestingly I commenced on some medication about a year ago and grew 2 distinct patches of thick coarse hair on both calfs/shins - which I did shave off at the time. It went away after a couple of months
My leg hair is really thin and blonde, so if I don't expose, it's fine. But if I have to even wear tights, I always shave. I can't stand the tiniest hair in the pits and down there though..
there is archeolgical proof that upper class Egyptian women shaved their legs and pits. That's 3000 years ago.
Anastasiia Bogolepova, you knew what the article was about when you clicked on it.
Please see my long comment below about why this is a very important thing to do. Women who don't shave are made to feel inferior for that decision. We should not be constantly terrified that people might find out. Normalizing a perfectly normal choice is a brave and important fight.

thats basically domestic abuse
I'm sad to read the comments below this article. Personally I shave (for a whole host of reasons), but I think it's important to normalize body hair for women, because too many people see it as disgusting (but not men's body hair, because double standards). Just like men are free to choose whether they shave their body hair or not, women should be too, without being shamed/degraded for it.
To be honest, I prefer men with less body hair. But i fully and wholly agree with what you say. Same here.
I'm sure a lot of women prefer men with less body hair. However I haven't seen nearly as many people say they find it downright disgusting, as it is with women's body hair.
I don't want a man who looks like a monkey so I'm not going to look like a monkey either :P Please take this comment lightheartedly
Okay I'll shave like women, no problem!
Wow. I don't shave my legs ever. Once or twice a year I might and then feel kinda fancy. Haha. My armpits are mostly covered in hair. It's not for any reason other than I really don't see the importance in them having to be smooth. I feel neither here nore there about it. Same for men. Hair or no hair makes very little difference to how attractive a man is. A hairy man is not an 'ape' or 'monkey'. He is just a hairy man. There is something seriously wrong with you if you are so vain that body hair means 'monkey'. Yikes. This is as weird as a phobia for insects. How can one be so removed from nature?

I dislike bodyhair on men, except beards and moderately hairy legs. Chest hair, back hair , overly long armpit & pubic hair is nasty. So no double standards there.
Yeah and men shouldn't give a shit about what you think and they should be allowed to not shave if they don't want to
This comment is hidden. Click here to view.
Whatever. I think it's gross if men shave their armpits, so, no, they DON'T get a pass.
Haha! Your opinion means very little. Your 'pass' is not important. In the greater scheme of things who really cares.
Issss I don't even know what to say to you. It's hopeless. Dirty people cannot be considered clean just because they shave!? Are there diseases being spread through the armpit? I'm afraid you might be a germophobe. Who cares and what is the real impact? I would say it's minimal. Showering too much is wrong considering the worlds limited resources. Don't overconsume anything! Not even water. My advice you you would be "just chill"

Imagine armpit that have not beeb shave.....done? Now imagine sweat....done? Now imagine all the sweat salts condensing and accumulating.....done? Now cover all of it up with ...... deodorant......what do we have? Gross smelly armpit, that has been somehow covered up. PS If you have regular shower with thorough scrub then no probs, but people are not always that hygienic
So... haircuts is OK, hair dye is OK, makeup is OK, tattoos is OK, piercing is OK, nail polish is OK, bedazzling your stupid forehead is OK... But hair below your nose - do not touch that shit - that shit must be all natural...
This is not about being natural, it's about choices. They enhance the natural part of it as an argument to let females be. There is an unspoken common social pressure on females (yep, from underage girls to mature ladies) that obbligates us to remove body hair. I won't say it comes from men, no, not exclusively, women are guilty too in this story. Anyway, you get the point. I still prefer the hairless feeling for myself, but I wish I could care less than I do now, honestly. It should be a choice, not a rule.
Quazer, 15 years ago or so, what you say might had been true, but now... My husband doesn't care that much, and we've both got higher priorities than caring about my body hair. I simply don't like that itchy feeling of my body hair moving as my clothes move, or getting stuck between clothes sometimes and so on. And I feel more clean too, although I'm not really a sweaty type of person.
Nobody cares if men get horny. Why does this always come up? People are existing for themselves. And preferences don't come from nothing you know. They always have to be seen in relation to society and your own life. So it's bullshit that (most) men like hairless women. Boys growing up now don't even know that women have hair.
This comment is hidden. Click here to view.
There is no "rule" - (most) men LIKE hairless women. If you decide for yourself "nah, im not shaving" - so be it - but don´t expect other men to get horny because of your hairy armpits. Some women won´t shave, thats ok. Some women will shave, thats ok, too - but your "pressure" to shave comes from yourself, because you don´t want to get outdone by other women. Same goes for men: "i don´t wanna get fit, i want a fat belly" - sure, i can do that. But i can´t blame "socitey" if women will prefer a fit, muscular sunnyboy and will ignore me. Its a simple biological behaviour... Imagine @ bored panda: "50+ Pics of really fat man-bellies, they look awesome" :D Won´t happen
Well, we just had that grey hair series a few days ago. "Do not dye you grey hair, because you must embrace your natural beauty!" What follows are women with grey hair, but most with some blue, pink, redish dye in it, or piercings, or heavy makeup, etc. I am not implying anything of that is wrong or ugly, but "all natural" in the true sense would mean that we would all look like cave trolls. Claiming that whatever you believe is right in self-expression must be tolerated often is hypocrisy.
This is about choices. You clearly need more post like this.
No, you're really missing the point here. This post is about freedom of choice, not being natural. Women can choose to dye their hair, wear makeup, get tattoos, etc. but won't be shamed if they don't, but not removing body hair is often considered bad, so these women are CHOOSING to not shave, like they can choose to do or not to do all of the aforementioned things.
Sadly they get shamed for no makeup or too much makeup, too. You can't do anything right as a woman.
Nope. Doing whatever the fuck you want is ok. Stop being so lame and judgmental.
Haha! Love you comment. Yes, ironic isn’t it?

BINGO!! If they are going to play the part, then they should go all the way, or..................................... 00-spitefu...d63d88.gif
hairy legs don't bother me at all and i shave them irregularly, but armpits are different territory - i'm gonna keep shaving them as smooth armpits contains smell much less
MagicalUnicorn Yep, same, I don't mind having a bit of a fur on my legs but I hate hairy pits, it's just not a nice feeling. And in my opinion, if you don't shave, wear stronger deodorant, cause you're going to smell (I've smelled friends who've gone for months without shaving)
I'm the same boat. I rarely shave my legs from the knee down, usually just in summer. I never shave my legs from the knee up, the hair there is blond and soft, so I want to keep it that way. But I shave my armpits daily, otherwise I sweat a lot. I do not mind the look of armpit hair, I just wonder if it's not uncomfortable and sweaty. Even my boyfriend trims his armpit hair because he sweats less when the hair is short.
Me exactly
just do what u like. why so many criticizing comments? it's just body hair. there are men and women, who get itchy and painful bumps from shaving. no matter what razor or cream they use. not shaving is just more comfortable for them. some shave because it makes them feel cleaner (less smelly). hairy, non-hairy, selectively hairy - how does it matter as long as you are confident and comfortable in your own hair? plus it's January. it's cold. not shaving just makes "natural" sense :P
True that! It hurts to shave my legs like every hair follicle turns into a tiny needle and swells up and looks gross like pox. Yes I've used every product out there. Only thing I haven't tried is laser removal, but I'm at risk of nasty scarring.
This comment is hidden. Click here to view.
If that's the case, they wouldn't feel the need to take photos to show the world. Just because they are comfortable with it doesn't mean I have to be or want to see it. It's NOT about comfort. It's about shoving it in people's faces to make a point.
Yeah, it's almost like you DIDN'T have to click on the article and look at it. But you wanted to get upset and have something to complain about. Do you say men are shoving their hair in people's faces, too? Just simply by having it?
Until childish morons stop saying "ewww!" or "gross!" or "disgusting" every time they see perfectly natural hair on women, I think people should keep shoving it in your face. Also, someone else pointed it out, but you knew damn well what this article was and you clicked on it anyway, so quit your damn bitching.

Absolutely agree. It’s another body trend plus a desperate need for attention that masquerades as “being bold with my choices”. If everyone else is doing it, it’s not rebellious. It’s mundane. As are those pictures.

Fucken exactly! I don't need to see your hairy ass pits. It's called PERSONAL information for a reason.

Also, no one had to click on the article to see nasty pits! They're in the photo on the main list.
I mean good for them, I'm glad they don't feel pressure to shave. However even if it wasn't the norm I still prefer shaving because I have really dry skin and having hair rub against my legs is irritating. I love the feeling of shaven legs
For me it's the other way around. Having no leg hair and wearing jeans is a really weird feeling and I hate it. I'd rather trim my leg hairs if they get really long and some of them dark.
It should always be a personal choice whether to shave or not and there should be no pressure from society!
Actually my grandmother would prefer that I don't wax, she thinks it will give sagging skin
Same here, hair becomes irritating that's why i wax
It's good to have a choice. I choose perfectly shaved smooth skin.
I think many don't shave during the winter. Also as we get older many just stop and only shave if we want to for an occasion. Many parts of the world women don't shave so I say live and let live.
Shave or don't shave. I don't care. Not my business.
In 1916 a women's fashion magazine made armpit and leg hair on women "unsightly". Going to join you beautiful brave women and stop shaving.

Brave for stop shaving? LOL!
Yeah, they're definitely brave, have you seen the hateful comments under the pictures?
Why does this have so many downvotes?
Some people are uncomfortable seeing women comfortable with the choices they've made for their own bodies
When we really stop and think about how much time men and women put into aggressively changing our appearances it is bizarre .. I love these articles about delving into the why of these issues.. it is about going past the visual and exploring the path that lead to these perceptions in the first place..
I haven't shaved in over 2 years. You can hardly tell on my legs, the hair there is very light and sparse. However, I do get self-conscious about my armpits. I do trim them occasionally, but I still don't shave because whenever I have they ITCH and I look like a gorilla until the hair has grown out.
Yeah trimming is a great thing. Some people seem to think that it's either no hair at all or it has to be totally "natural" with no interference.
Loved this article !! Gave me lots to ponder .
You know, before I read all these mean comments below the article I thought that Bored Panda was still one of those rare internet communities where people are respectful towards others and don`t make toxic comments. And I`m not going to shame those who were disgustingly rude and sexist, but if you don`t support women with body-hair then don`t read this. Come on Bored Panda`s. We are better than this. As your kindergarten teacher said, if you don`t have anything nice to say, don`t say it at all.
I really don’t understand why people see female body hair as such a disgusting thing.
saddest thing is, women are far more judgemental of other women than men are. Honestly, most men, especially those that are not stuck up their own ass as hell, don't even notice those things, except if really excessive. But women... you will hear so much evil from other women. That is depressing.
I really started to be extremely annoyed by the women who want to be the "cool one's" and not like the other girls. As if "being one of the boys" is the best you can achieve in your life. Those power dynamics have a really weird impact on women, which makes them accomplice to this shit. I guess it's one way to be treated as a real person aka a man.
SHAME ON YOU DOWN VOTERS!
I stopped shaving too.....just lasered all my hair off. I just don't like how it feels when I rub my two legs together with hair or when I am in bed. When I grew out my hair on my legs I could actually feel the wind blowing my hair and my armpits looked black from so much hair even after I shaved, once I got them lasered it all went away. Best decision I ever made.
May I know how much you payed for it? I'd kinda like to try it out too, but none of the sites give precise information because it all depends on various factors, but I wanna know more or less what to expect.
Oh and they will not do it if you have dark skin and dark hair or light skin and light hair. The machine won't pick up the hair, It needs contrast.
Its been a while since I got it done, I think it was $600 for 9 sessions and then two touch up sessions. After 1 session you start seeing the results and after 9 literally no more hair. I bought two packages just to make sure all the hair was done since I have so much. It did not hurt at all, only the first time a little bit. The new technology for removing hair is amazing. They always have specials during the summer or for mother's day or valentines or you can always negotiate a deal I found.
Thank you, Natasha! This was very useful information. Finally I have some numbers. Might try it out someday.
LoOK AT ALL THOSE BEAUTIFUL QUEENS
