I'll never get how ANYONE could still think or communicate that owning *more* guns would make schools a safer place. How obvious does it get?

Looking at history, the guns make sense. People "conquer" an area and the only way to deal with the pissed off natives and nature, who have no desire to be conquered and their land stolen, is killing them. By this a culture of using weapons is solidly established as a standard, acceptable manner of how to deal with unpleasant situations. At a certain piont there are no natives or nature left to fend off, but feeling unsecure without a gun is so deeply rooted in society (i.e. a society where everybody could be your enemy with a weapon), that most people just simply cannot let go. However, Australia and New Zealand, with a comparable conquering history, found a sound way to deal with this issue a lot faster.

How long ago did people have to fend for themselves with guns in the US? Seriously? And the wars in Europe somehow made Europeans more conscious with guns whereas American treat guns as toys because war is what happens to other people? And that's why shooting people seems to be a viable solution to problems and nobody bats an eye?

For our friends across the pond. South Africa (my country) is allegedly, according to the Orange Hitler, a shithole. Our population is about 5.8x smaller. Yet our gun death rate, with mostly criminal guns, MOSTLY, is 48x lower. That means that either americans are 10x more violent than Africans in an alleged shithole, OR... 10x more stupid. You pick.

I understand that mass shootings happen everywhere, but this is a very obvious sign that something is seriously wrong in America. Is it the guns? Is it poverty? Is it lack of free health services? Maybe a combination of many things? I don't know...but those numbers are heartbreaking....

This is a stat put out by CNN. I tried looking up stats by looking up each country. Turns out in some countries they aren't reporting things. You can find news articles of events, but not an overall number. So I'm not sure where CNN got this. One that is reported more frequently is gun deaths per day. Paints a different picture. School shootings are bad. So is any shooting. Crime exists though, and if not guns, knives, if not knives, people will beat someone to death with a brick. People are animals. Never forget that.

The question is: HOW? How do you get rid of America's guns? America produces virtually no cocaine. Yet, in 2022, one of out of every 200 8th graders had used cocaine within the last 12 months. Among 12th graders, that number was 3 in 200. That means that in a school with 2000 students (my high school had more than twice that), 30 seniors obtained cocaine in their senior year. If an 8th grader can get cocaine despite the best efforts of half a dozen federal agencies, what's stopping them getting guns? I'm not saying guns aren't a problem. I left America, in part, BECAUSE of school shootings. I'm just saying outlawing them just won't solve the problem.

Of course it will. School shootings happen when kids their hands on guns. Kids get their hands on guns when parents own guns. If parents no longer own guns, kids cannot easily get guns. I live in South Africa, we're number 3 on that list. We have gun control. I can go out and get some cocaine fairly easily, I cannot get a gun without jumping serious hoops. Drugs are far easier.....and far more lucrative to sell since drugs make you feel good. They are consumed and thus the dealer can sell to the same person multiple times. Guns do not make you feel good. Guns are not consumed. You sell a gun to a person once and they're no longer a customer. TLDR: Guns and cocaine are not at all comparable, it's like comparing KFC to computers.

Not really. If you restrict the sale of guns to people who have a genuine and legitimate reason for owning one (Not self defence). Then you drastically reduce the opportunities for these shootings to occur. Here in the UK we have some of the tightest gun ownership restrictions in the world, we also have some of the lowest numbers of firearms related murders in the world. On average there are 33 people killed with firearms in the UK per year, that is less than you guys kill in an average week. Do you really think that this is a coincidence?

This is a bad statistical presentation, since population size is not used as a factor. Yes, a country the size of the US will have many more shootings than Estonia regardless of gun laws. If they did "School shootings per Hundred Thousand Residents", you would reach the same conclusion about how dangerouis the US is in a more valid way.

But that makes no difference. That argument is made constantly but it’s just a complete fail - the graphs look the same when converted into percent. US has a bizarrely high gun murder rate compared to the entire world, and guns remain the problem.

In the last 20 years it has been more difficult to own a fire are then any time in U.S. history. I believe it is more of a culture issue. Tv, video games, and other influencers are getting more and more increasingly violent then are so of the kids. People are mostly a product of their environment and if you let the TV and video games raise your kids then that's what they will act like.

The cause of mass shootings in our country is not because of violence in TV and video games. Other countries have access to the same types of media we do, but do NOT have the gun violence we do. We have more privately owned guns than there are people living in this country - so, more than 336 MILLION. The problems are too many guns and a total lack of honest politicians willing to do a goddamned thing about it.

It doesn’t matter what size a country is or its population size. We have a gun problem in the states and it has nothing to do with our size. This is completely unacceptable. Any number higher than 0 anywhere is unacceptable.

The Data is Beautiful subreddit was created in February 2012, and it’s amassed an impressive 19.4 million members since then. The group’s description explains that it’s for “visualizations that effectively convey information”, and notes that, “Aesthetics are an important part of information visualization, but pretty pictures are not the sole aim of this subreddit.” So while you might find these pics stunning, you’re also going to learn something. The moderators note in the subreddit’s rules that posts must contain a “qualifying data visualization”, which, for the purposes of this subreddit, means no photographs.

“Fake data, goofball statistics, and trivial analysis” are also not welcome in Data is Beautiful. The information shared must be based on real or simulated data, a mapping of information to a visual property, must be more than “dots on a map”, must be made with the intent to communicate data, and must be comprehensible based on the visual and labels included.

We’ve previously covered Data is Beautiful on Bored Panda over the past couple years, and in the past, we were lucky enough to get in touch with the group’s moderators to learn more about running this informational subreddit. The moderators previously shared with Bored Panda that they hold high standards for the community, ensuring that members are treated as “first-class citizens” who are always credited and acknowledged for their work.

“We bring a data-centric view of the world to millions of people every day—from important information about the COVID-19 pandemic all the way to a random dude's daily bowel movements—and our community prides itself in that fact,” one moderator previously shared. “For example, we had community members posting analyses and projections of COVID-19 trends back in January and February 2020—well before anyone in the U.S. was taking the pandemic seriously. /r/DataIsBeautiful is THE place to go when you want to see the signal through the noise of hectic daily life.”

According to the moderator team of Data is Beautiful, the subreddit receives between 400-500 submissions every week, and in one given month, they had 2,370 approvals, removals and spam posts. Meanwhile, the number of comments the subreddit receives is far too many to count, with an estimate of over 100k. And the rules of the group are frequently being assessed and improved by the moderators. “For example, we no longer allow YouTube videos as it was being abused by content creators looking for subs on their channel,” one moderator previously told Bored Panda. “We also occasionally temporarily prohibit specific subjects, like Tinder or dating posts, when a topic overwhelms the subreddit although dating posts are allowed again.”

Only takes one nuke.... So sad the all this money is not used for a greater good. Iran & Afganistan have cost over 2 trillion dollars. That's 1,000,000,000,000. That's ~ 3000 USD for ever American. Enough to have completely phased out fossil fuels and transition to renewables. Imagen the US economy if instead of blowing that money on a war it had gone into energy independence.

That's kind of sad for Hispanics. Positive representation in mass media is an important thing for everyone.

Not a very useful graph format if you actually wanted to read the numbers of various countries.
