Starbucks Employee Breaks Down In Tears After Theyβre Scheduled To Work 8 Hours
Recently, a Starbucks barista shared a video of themselves having a meltdown and it has become the center of attention on the internet.
The clip shows the employee sharing their thoughts on management and rude customers, but it was what the person said about their schedule that divided the online crowd.
The barista — who is also a student — said that a 25-hour week and 8-hour shifts during the weekend were too much for them to handle.
Immediately, one group of Twitter users started calling them soft and spoiled, while the other defended them saying that worker exploitation has many faces.

Getting a degree in the US is expensive. Even the locals underestimate its cost. According to the 2021 Fidelity Investments survey College Savings & Student Debt, 38% of high school students and 1 in 4 parents believe that attending one year of college will set you back $5,000 or less, but this number is way smaller than what they’re likely to pay at public and private four-year colleges. (In addition to tuition and fees, students must also pay other expenses such as housing, food, and books, which can run into thousands of dollars a year.)
Of course, it depends on what college you go to. The average cost of tuition and fees to attend a ranked public in-state college is about 74% less than the average sticker price at a private college ($39,723). But that’s still $10,423 for the 2022-2023 year. And the average cost for out-of-state students at public colleges comes to $22,953 for the same year.
So it should come as no surprise that many, just like the person who made this video, have to work if they want to graduate. In 2020, the percentage of full-time undergraduate students who were employed was 40 percent (additionally, the share of part-time undergraduates who were employed was 74 percent).
But that usually gets you only that far. In fact, there are 42.8 million borrowers who have federal student loan debt and the average balance is $37,787 (although the total average balance (including private loan debt) may be as high as $40,780).
Student loan debt in the United States totals $1.745 trillion.
As the student loan forgiveness plan is making headlines, many Americans are praising the government for granting relief. However, drained by years of financial crises, many more are still devastatingly unable to afford to pay for gas and buy essentials, let alone afford repayments of a five-figure debt.
After surveying 2,000 Americans, the team at ELVTR, an online education platform, told Bored Panda in a statement that this is how people in the country are impacted by their student debt:
- 63% are still struggling with federal loan payments despite a forgiveness plan;
- 60% of educated Americans earn less than some of their friends without a degree;
- 32% had to delay starting a family because of student debt, and 53% could not afford to travel;
- 36% regret taking a loan, while 77% regret their higher ed choices.
The results are staggering. Roman Peskin, CEO of ELVTR, said: “The United States higher education system is broken following decades of decline. Students give up years of their life and enormous sums of money in pursuit of the American Dream: a well-paid job, and the means to enjoy life and live comfortably. It turns out that those desires remain merely a dream for the vast majority of graduates. They end up learning an assortment of potentially useful skills and subjects, yet master none… and at a significant cost to their financial and mental health. With the cost of college rising faster than inflation, the situation is only getting worse. Loan forgiveness, while a great initiative, is really just a Band-Aid — before we dress the wound, we need to stitch it up first.”
So while everyone is entitled to their own opinion about the way this particular person is handling the pressure, I hope we all can agree that looking down the line and seeing such hardship can put an enormous amount of stress on you.

Lately, Starbucks employees have been really vocal about their jobs. Earlier this month, for example, workers at over 100 locations went on strike in the next stage of the chain’s union effort. The walkouts coincided with Starbucks’ Red Cup Day, one of the company’s busiest days of the year.
CNN reported that over 2,000 employees took part. The union said it was striking to protest the retaliation taken against union supporters nationwide. It was also protesting what it characterizes as the company’s refusal to bargain with the union on a first labor deal.
There are 264 stores that have voted in favor of union representation, but no contracts have yet been negotiated even at stores that voted nearly a year ago.
“This is to show them we’re not playing around,” said Tyler Keeling, a 26-year-old union supporter who has worked at a Starbucks in Lakewood, California — near Los Angeles — for the last six years. “We’re done with their anti-union retaliation and them walking away from bargaining.”
In the past, the company has denied it has retaliated against any employee for their support of the union, and it has blamed the union for the lack of progress at the negotiating table. Starbucks has defended the firings of union supporters that have taken place as proper enforcement of rules that apply to all of its employees, who it refers to as “partners.”
But the National Labor Relations Board — which oversees union representation votes — filed in federal court for a national cease and desist order to prevent Starbucks from retaliating against union supporters.
The NLRB filing said that there had been a “number and pattern of Starbucks’ unfair labor practices … particularly discharges” against union supporters at its stores.
But as time went by, they got plenty of negative reactions and people started having heated arguments about today’s state of customer service

8 hour shift is not too long, but if it are 8 hours shifts while being continuously understaffed and yelled at, then the shifts are hard. The duration of the shift isn't the problem - the lack of other employees and lack of manners of customers, lack of authority to be able to put up a sign "We're busy, wait time is longer" that is what makes this not a good working condition. Also to study 40+hrs and work more then 24hrs in one week is a lot imo. Either there is hardly time to study or hardly time to live. Bottom line of this post imo: It's not the duration of the shift. It's the conditions of the shift.
i stopped going to starbucks not only cuz prices r ridiculous but bc of some of the customers. every time ive ever gone in a starbucks there is always a couple ppl online who complain the staff is too slow, their name was spelled wrong, food wasnt warmed up enough etc. one time wen i was on line someone even criticized the cashier for having blue hair and a tattoo on her arm saying how someone like her shouldnt work their and it makes the place look bad. i have an anxeity disorder just being around ppl like that causes me anxeity so if i really want starbucks i go to one with a drive thru. i think starbucks just attracts a certain type of crowd. im not saying everyone is like that but it definitely attracts those who r.
I could not agree more, Chrissy. Starbucks attracts the rudest, most entitled customers that have I ever seen. The are awful to the employees and management doesn't back them up.
Same I bought Javy Coffee to make my own for pennies.
I completely agree. It's not the duration, it's the conditions of the shift. I bartend every Sunday Brunch and while my clientele is of more of the "Sunday Funday" mentality, and take care of me, the people that sit in the dining room aren't. I can happily work (and often do) 8+ hours only b/c the people I serve treat me with respect, and it's truly a pleasure to take care of them. I feel for the servers that have to take care of the large groups sitting in the dining room, that walk in all at once, and have nothing but complaints, $2 tips, and separate checks.
Shut the f**k up zoomer you are f*****g parasitic trash
While in college full-time, nursing student, I worked one 32 hours a week job and two part-time jobs. All of this on top of the required clinicals for my degree. I'm not saying, "I did it, so you can, too." The point I'm making is, unless you come from money, MANY college students work their Γ sses off to be able to afford college so you do what you have to do. I just now payed off the student loans that I had to take during my last semester in order to stay in college. I graduated in '95. It was VERY DIFFICULT, but I did what I had to do! Good luck to all that's doing it, now!!
You're saying you worked three jobs while going to nursing school full-time? That doesn't seem physically possible...
Do the math: ONE full time job plus two PART-TIME jobs does not equal "three [full time implied] jobs" It's totally doable, since two of those p/t jobs could've been single-afternoon shifts.
Thank you for saying all this. I rarely reply or even read this stuff. Too angry and sad. This is a student in an understaffed, nonstop, on his feet likely working every day betw school and Starbucks. People easily missed the point that he likely spends at least 50 hours a week in college classes. (Generally a class requires 10 study hours and usually 5 classes.). So all those complaining about his inability to do the long hours and cope can't do math well. He is doing near 75 hours a week. I doubt few realized the cycle as well that he likely is doing the ASU college which SB may pay for...sounds great but you are caught in a box. You must work a min hours..prob 20-25 to get tuition paid...and then you need to get decent grades to keep the benefit. All this is hard enuf but...add to it the short staff, angry customers, and nonstop work and who could take this day after day...and who should??? TY for your post. You hit the heart of it.

Shut your f*****g mouth you disgusting parasite. F**k you zoomer death to the left n****r
A full time college student is typically 12-16 hours of class/lab a week. Allow for 3 hours of homework a night, more than usually needed but is a good amount for numbers. So for school that's 27-31 hours a week. Plus 25 hours of work. That makes 56 hours combined. That's not a ridiculously high number. I have a friend who worked full time while going to medical school. If he needs more time to study, he can work less. All applicants to jobs give their available hours. He accepted that job and those hours. He needs to learn to live with the consequences of his choices. And while the management is suspect, so is the work ethic of the employee. Does he do this at school? How long has he been working at this job...or any job? I have managed both high schoolers and college students in the service industry and working around schedules can be tricky. Which is probably why he has two full time shifts on the weekend.
SB around me are also short staffed with stressed tired employees. Easy to get drinks wrong in this environment and drinks are now up to $7. Most SB employees are sweet and hard working. I was told last week a SB was closing the cafe bec they only had 2 people in the night shift...and that was with a drive thru. SB is short employees so corp has it rough now too. But going back to the student...how many adults (and he is likely an adult) are going to handle being yelled at or negatively commented to over and over again day after day while on their feet for near 8 hours. Most quit in this situation. The health issues that come aren't worth it. So add my comment about hours for college + work being 79/ week and this kid on the video is one of hundreds feeling the same way. And he likely can't quit Bec of needing to pay for college. No one i know would accept this treatment and they are not soft, just smart and hard working.
Assuming it's ASU he is attending thru SB college program...ASU recommends 6 hours per credit per class per week...not even talking labs. So per 3 credit class..18 hours. ASU works in 2 sessions per semester so say he has 3 classes of 3 credits each. Study time is 54 hours...per the college. Add 25 working hours and that equals 79 hours. I've worked those hours when I have had to. We joked that my apartment was only for taking showers as i left the office at 4 am. This is all doable on a short term basis but ... I also had the ability to shut my door and breathe for a moment, decide not to take a call or walk around the building if needed. This student cannot escape this situation for 8 hours with exception to a breaks...and we hear some have had to take theirs at the start of shift. Much is wrong here.
say it with me: just because your life is worse does not mean their life isnβt bad
YES, this young man's rough time doesn't mean you can belittle him because you were in the military or are an overworked nurse. WTF is wrong with people that they have to make it about them all the time? TO CLARIFY - this young man is over worked and I am sure grossly underpaid with no support from his managment, you can see just how tired and broken he is, and then instead of WAVES of support and understanding (service jobs SUCK and covid made them worse not better) people are telling him to 'adult' and man up. It's gross. Be supportive, be kind or just keep it to yourself if you can't.
"WTF is wrong with people that they have to make it about them all the time?" That's Gen Z in a nutshell. The clear fact of the matter is this kid is a spoiled little prick who can't "adult" and would love to get paid big money to do anything from the bare minimum to nothing at all.
"the clear fact of the matter is..." You're a f'ing azzhole that needs his azz kicked hard enough for his parents to not be able to sit down. The majority of people complaining don't want to do the bare minimum; they DO however want to have reasonable support so they aren't doing IT ALL. And yes, they want LIVING WAGES, not tooth fairy money. The problem here, is YOU. Not them.
Way to go all those dickheads punching down on a kid whose job consists of being understaffed for 8 hrs a day and being yelled at while his lazy tw*t of a manager does a runner. They should be ashamed of themselves. Ask yourself why Starbucks don't want Unions. Then. Join. One.

Shut your f*****g mouth and die you genetic aberration. Millennials should never have been allowed the freedom to live without government intervention. Millennials should never have been allowed to breed without consent from the goverment. Those who failed the tests should have been sterilized. Millennials are a mutant generation of genetic abominations warped by parents who drank while pregnant among other mental aberrations. Gen Z where born from parents who where already mentality unstable and are likely the product of incest as incest was on the rise in the early 00s all should be euthanized its a situation on the same level as covid but is not talked about becouse it proves eugenics was correct.
You need psychiatric intervention. I think you are in a lot of pain and live a miserable life. It is hard to see other humans suffer, but when they act like you do, it is easy.

Found the Boomer (Unfamiliar Tortoise)β¦ He literally isnβt only complaining about working 8 hours, heβs complaining about working 8 hours extremely understaffed and dealing with a******s like you getting mad because theyβre understaffed.
People bitching about it have never worked at a service job, and/or never gone to collegeβ¦But this calling people over 30 boomers is so f*****g annoying! Baby Boomers are my parents age, they are the generation of the 60βs as teens and 20 year olds they fought for civil rights, women rights, gay rights, environmental protections, and they built the modern hi-tech world. Iβm a teacher, I tell everyone how smart amazing, intelligent, tolerant kids (gen z)are todayβ¦but theyβll probably euthanize us all later on. π. βBoomersββ¦meh, old people are too much work, and gross, letβs just put em downβ¦

You are still an aberration. All millennials yourself included should do the world a favor and sterilize yourselves. You should not be allowed to breed without tests from the government. As a millennial myself i will say nobody in my generation aside from a small few deserve to live free or breed. They should be sterlized they should be removed and controled. Millineals are dangrously unstable and pass their sick disgusting genes on to their gen z children's harming society even more. As a millennial if you do not off yourself at least do yourself a favor and never have children. If you can give yourself the discipline to not f**k. The sterilize yourself. Those are your options.
I find it funny how being a Baby "Boomer" is a pejorative term and pathetically attempts to discredit stated facts. You and people like You and the pathetic Soy Boi in the video are in for a rude awakening. Life IS hard and it's Unfair!! This world drains the life right out of us as we attempt to survive. The sooner you come to grips with it, the better off you'll be. The generation of "Participation Trophies" is weak and pathetic. The rest of the world will trample them and grind them to dust.

What is wrong with you? Life shouldn't have to be spent overworked and miserable.
Oh maybe my comment isn't coming off correctly but that is what I mean, this poor young man is having a really s****y time and instead of people being understanding or maybe supporting a union they are making fun and telling him to 'grow up'. I think going to school and having a job (a service job is even more impressive) is a big feat. And it sucks his management is so s****y. :( I would be so upset if my son felt this way and was so broken like this young man is.

Nah this "young man" is a genetic failure and should never have been born. This "young man" should off himself he is society's garbage. Born from parrents from the millennial generation. Which is why he is "nerodivergent" a f*****g retarrd the millineals passed their sick disgusting genes on to their children. Children who also have large chance of being the children of incest as that was on the rise in the early 00s. Millennials should be tested by the government and sterilized if they fail the tests. This is a sickness worse than covid but it isn't addressed becouse it would remind everyone that eugenics was good.
Ok, but at what point does this 'life' y'all want, when where and HOW is it EARNED?! Why is there always a sense of entitlement to be GIVEN such a life rather than a plan to execute and WORK FOR that life?! You don't work, you don't eat. It's SO simple. No one OWES you a good life π€·
Wow. Why don't YOU go work there then? Try walking in their shoes before being so hateful.

As an older gen z, let me just say this, Unfamiliar. You're an *ss. You think that all we want is money? I doubt you can even try to put yourself in OPs or pretty much any gen z shoes, that is working an 8 hour service job, two days in a row, while being verbally abused, with no help from anyone, including people who don't responsibility for their actions, on top of going to school full time. You want to talk about spoiled pricks? Go look in a mirror.
People crapping all over Gen Z and Millennials fail to realize they're the first generation to actually set healthy boundaries and uphold them. I applaud that. They're also bringing more progressive views to the table and bringing up, discussing and tackling touchy subjects that previous generations just swept under the rug.
Like Cancelling anyone who has a different opinion
Lol. Yeah. "Healthy boundaries" like "upholding" your phone in your face for hours a day on social media. Or bringing up "touchy subjects"...as long as trigger warnings are provided so no one is traumatized or offended! Previous generations created "Black Like Me" or even "All in the Family" to discuss social issues and taboos. They weren't perfect and neither are you. Your grandchildren will look at today and ask your generation "Why did your generation think that way?", as well.
Jack Dill sounds bitter
I could think of several other words for him.
Lol. My life isn't perfect but what do I have to be bitter about? My job can be annoying but pays the bills, wife and kids that I love but we annoy each other at times, etc. Diagnosed with brain cancer last year but have a number of years left, I'm told. I could choose to be bitter but prefer to focus on the positives. That's life, baby!
Jack. You're giving the "Participation Trophies" generation too much credit. IF they eventually have grandchildren. Those grandchildren will be just as weak and pathetic. Those who aren't weak and pathetic will ask WTF was wrong with you?? I'm a Baby Boomer and IDGAFF what the weak minded think of Boomers. There were people in my generation and generations before, who had jobs, went to school AND raised a family all at the same time. My Dad was one of those people. That's why I look at Soy Boi's generation, SMH and wonder how such weak pathetic people like them will survive.
Unfamiliar is probably this poor kids manager...
Older Gen z lol. Your Generation believe getting told to do a task is abuse. I see it all of the time. Get asked to do something a certain way, argue about it, the whine to people because you got yelled at. you need thicker Skins.
Boo hoo hoo, as someone who has been adulting OVER 40 years, try doing over 8 hours a day at LEAST 5 days a week in a job the is infinitly more stressful than ANY Starbucks job can ever be. Screw up their you have one customer impacted, try doing my job where millions or 10s of millions are affected by what I do or don't do.
Him being upset doesn't take away from your life stress. >_> geez.
What a hasty generalization to make.
Oh you misunderstood, I mean people like your comment. This kid is having a really hard week and is getting no support from his management. It's sad, and the comments RIPPING him down is sad too. If you dont have anything supportive or nice to say just dont say anything or maybe work on yourself to figure out why you are so unhappy. *shrug*
"big money" Minimum wage to be yelled at? And you're calling HIM a prick? The irony.
So? Doesn't everyone? Why do they get paid way less when they're young? I've always thought that was stupid. The manager is the one who lets him work for him and he sits on his a*s with big money and if you dare say something about it: respect me! I'm old! I would not let my son work there when I with 52 get more money just drawing some maps.
Maybe because when you young you don't know jack squat yet, and that manager, does way, way more than you are doing.
You wish, Someone Important. Plenty of managers know f**k all and act like theyβre gods.
As someone who has been in management for years, most managers don't know much at all about the jobs. What they know is how to take credit for others work and how to use personal connections.
You think Managing a group of whiners is easy? Then you've never been a manager. Keeping up with hiring, firing and quitters. Not to mention, inventory control, health codes, store cleaning, banking etc etc etc. As for getting paid less. Do you expect to get paid on the same level as someone with years of decades more experience, when you have little or No experience? If you do have a son, he's probably as weak minded as you. That's truly sad.

Gen Z are actually sick parasites that should not have been born. Gen Z was born to parents who had bad genes by default. Millennials where born to boomers who drank and did drugs while pregenet. or homless getto niggerrs. Millennial brains are actually smaller and damaged from the day they where born. Millennials should never have been allowed the freedom to live without goverment intervention. Millineals should never have been allowed to breed without consent from the goverment. Those who failed the tests should have been sterilized. Millennials are a mutant generation of genetic abominations warped by parents who drank while pregnant among other mental aberrations. Guy was complaining about working 8 hours as service worker. Basically saying it isn't fair. People are tired of the complaining. They share their own experiences because life isn't fair.
Of course I can belittle him! He POSTED ONLINE about falling apart at a job at Starbucks! What the hell do people expect to happen? Anyone can whine about their life and be exempt from criticism?
So... he didn't make it about himself?
Crying about having to work 8 hours makes him a wuss Worthy of belittling and laughing at. I've been doing at least 8 hour days the last 40+ years. Zero sympathy from me.
Because heβs acting like a big baby. I used to work 16 hour shifts and now I work 12. Heβs gonna cry over 8 hours? Iβd like to see him my job or my husbands. He would last an hour.
Gina - no one cares that you work 12 hours versus his 8. Have you ever stopped to ask yourself why you have to work so many hours instead of playing a martyr?
It's not about being a martyr. It's showing that people can and do endure FAR more than an 8 hr Starbucks shift. Posting a video online crying about a work situation literally millions of others experience daily...??
I think I should start crying because I didn't get 8hrs this week π
Millions of people work understaffed jobs with rude customers and managers who don't give a s**t about them and complain about it all the time. I don't know what the f**k your talking about.
The difference is they don't post videos of themselves crying about it. If you feel you need to whine on that level, then you get the backlash with it. That's just the way it is, and the way it should be.
Apparently Gina and her husband are doing what needs to be done, in order to live the life they want. Whereas, people like You seem to think you deserve to get paid just for showing up.
But we can for crying on camera for internet strangers like a weirdo.
Death to the left. shut your f*****g mouth you are on the wrong side of hystory
You're right...but HOW is that person's life bad exactly? say it with me: just because you THINK your life is bad does not mean your life is bad.
And you are able to make that judgement how exactly?
It's truly sad that weak people like you are allowed to breed and spread your pathetic weakness to following generations. It's people like You who are responsible for weak, pathetic cry babies like the soy boi in the video. Remember: (s)he also whined about being "misgendered" by customers. I'm guessing they wouldn't take him for a girl (facial hair or not) if (s)he wasn't acting like a pissy little b***h.
Yes, that fallacy is called relative privation and it's far to common
Agree with the sentiment, but I think this one crosses the line.

corection zoomer. You are worthless you are a f*****g degenrete pussy you are f*****g human scum you should not have been born off youself n****r
It's 2 8 hour shifts, no feeling sorry for this kid. I did it when I was younger and my sister is doing it now. It's life, unless you were born with a golden spoon this is what you have to do. He'd complain more if he suddenly became homeless
I'm never one to say "I suffered so now it's your turn", but this is more "I've done it, I've done it tenfold, and I know it can get that bad BUT you go find a new job instead of crying on TikTok"
Way to completely miss the point, but keep focusing on the 8 hour thing.
I was going to nursing school during the day and working full time at a very busy what a burger over night. I came into work one evening and as all the other shift began leaving, I realized I was all alone on a Friday night. This particular store was just down the street from a very large bar. I called the assistant manager asking who was going to help me. He told me to call the manager, who told me to call the assistant! When I told him this he said to start calling people on the list beside the phone. I walked to the lobby and locked the doors. I went in back and turned off as many lights as I could, and put makeshift, handwritten signs on the doors and the menu board. My signs said we were closed because of an unforeseen emergency. If neither manager wanted to do their job, then I wasnβt going to do it for them. Iβm sure that store lost thousands of dollars that night. I donβt cry about stress, I act. I lost my job, but the look on the managerβs face the next morningβ¦priceless!
Been there, done that (only one covering a shift). You did the best you could do. You shouldn't have been fired. The district manager should have fired the manager and assistant.
He is an entitled little twink who cannot handle stress properly because the generation that raised him failed to properly teach. He is a pussy.
So - an 8hr shift is not long, even on your feet, I was doing 10hrs every Saturday in retail at 16. However, if it's 8hrs on both Saturday AND Sunday, as well as hours worked during the week AND studying full time - then it becomes a lot. It becomes too much. It's about perspective. And that's without the disrespect of the customers etc. (Three hours of disrespect is two hours and 59.5 minutes too long). So yeah - the clickbait headline of "Tears because they're scheduled to work for 8 hours" is going to come across as GenZ bashing. The deep dive into the story tells more of the truth. And I bet most of the comments didn't make it that far.
Before working my now comfortable desk job, I had worked retail and in food service. Food service is the most difficult, but this is normal and not unreasonable shifts
Add 6 hours a day of classes and studying on the weekdays on top of that. At least most jobs end when you clock out
I did the same- went from on my feet all day 10-12 hours or more, worked in food service- to now having an office job where i sit all day. i always thought this was a the dream but I've gottta say, my body hurts WAY more now. And it exactly because I'm sitting all day. I had no idea how much harder it was on your body to be so sedentary for such long periods. I thought I'd come home with all kinds of energy and I can actually barely walk, lol. Being on my feet...trust me that is an abuse in an of itself but sitting down all day is not the picnic people make it out to be either. I also couldn't imagine ever going back to being on my feet like that again.
Lol - it's completely unreasonable when the guy's main job is to pass the classes he's paying to attend.
It's such a misleading title. They were made to work on their time off. That's BS.
When did he say that? He legit said he was scheduled. Even if he was made to come in on his day off the title is still accurate.
