The Netflix series soon became popular because of its intricate plot. This survival drama presents 456 players who agree to enter a series of games that people used to play when they were children. The contestants, who are known to be financially struggling, are promised to win ₩45.6 billion ($38.6 million) after they win the set of games. What they don’t know at first is that every failure will cost a life.
So what are these games? Inspired by his own struggles and economic inequality in South Korea, the film director and screenwriter Hwang Dong-hyuk wrote Squid Game, which later turned into a successful series. Squid Game is an actual game that gained popularity in the '70s and '80s. The game got its name from the squid-shaped figure drawn at the start of the game. This is when players divide into two teams and fight for who will “dominate” the playground.

The series also gave a start to the Dalgona candy challenge. The show presented a Dalgona candy carving challenge, after which people also started making this candy and sharing their carving experience on TikTok. I was so sad for them - Sae-byeok because Ji-yeon (who I was also devestated for) was probably the only person she maybe considered a friend and opened up to, only to immediately lose her. She knew then that she certainly wanted more than ever to get out of that place, gain custody of her brother, get her mother over the border and go to Jeju. But it never happened.. Ali, because he was just so sweet and he trusted too easily and I totally relate to that, he was betrayed and it just.. ugh. ;-;

Honestly, I didn't think I would like this show but everyone at work was talking about and so I decided to give it a try. I know the dub is off a bit but it is really a fantastic show!
I watched it a while back. It was entertaining, but doesn't really warrant being treated like it's a million times better than everything else on Netflix. I think it's a case of 'everyone's watching it so everyone does'. Sweet Home is as good (except for the excessive use of fake blood).

I have never watched this show so I can confirm to all you fans: Out of context, this show looks is totally bonkers and I have no clue where to even begin to understand (I mean, what's so bad abt sharing your marbles..?) It does look entertaining tho

Wait.... Do people ACTUALLY DIE or is it just the plot? I've never seen it
In the show, the characters are forced to play a series of children's games and if they fail at them, they are then shot and killed by the armed guards standing around them. There is WAY more to it than that. But that's part of the gist of it. They're playing to win millions of dollars.

Then you should watch Sweet Home. I think they used all the fake blood in South Korea for that one. The story made it worthwhile though.
