That's funny. Yeah. We bought it from the Sand Man, who actually stole it from Tinker Bell.

Considering it was the first time a total solar eclipse has ever sailed across the U.S. from coast to coast, and considering it was the first solar eclipse seen in NO OTHER COUNTRY but the U.S. since the nation's birth in 1776, I'd say WE ALL can call it the Great American Eclipse with a pretty good degree of certainty that we're not stepping on anyone's toes by calling it that... except for maybe the toes of the over-sensitive who might need a safe place to go process the fact the universe somehow slighted them by leaving their country out of this eclipse... or unless you're just looking for a reason to complain.

Actually, the word for a citizen of the United States of America in Spanish is "estadounidense", which translates into somehing like unitedstatians. Nothing awkward on it

It would be interesting to think of a cool country-like name for the United States. Not being mean or anything like that,it's just a thought

So, this thread, smh. I know that the U.S.(a term you probably don't like either since there are other "United States of" ) isn't the only country on the continental of America. But, we tend to refer to ourselves as Americans, rightly or, in this period of history, increasingly wrongly. I know some Canadians who take exception with our using that term, and others who use it themselves in referring to U.S. citizens and residents. Anyway we in the U.S. are overwhelmed that for this eclipse the path of totality was coast to coast across the continental U.S. so we are excited about our being able to see a total eclipse. It may seem condescending, but if you take a minute, maybe you can have it in your heart to see that we are some what giddy from the experience. And, as is common among us, really mean you no harm.

Get over it. We all know it can be seen from other places. Its just the total part can be seen in a path in America. Would you prefer the United States eclipse?

America is a country, North and South America are continents, get educated. Americans live in America, which is in North America, you probably live in the Americas just like us, but you don't live in America. Come on say it for me, The United States of AMERICA.

The entire planet calls it like that. Even here in Europe yes. It's condescending to think these names always stem from America and nowhere else.

I'm confused as to why you're confused. You live in North America or you live in the United States of America? Do you refer to yourself as an American?

How ignorant are you? If you're Canadian or Mexican, you know darn well that the US is commonly referred to as "America" and it's citizens are "Americans." Lay off the bullcrap. 'Murica!
