On Monday, August 21, 2017, millions of people were staring at the same thing through doofy glasses, as they tried to catch a glimpse of the solar eclipse. Not only that, they also immortalized the awe-inspiring moment in photos, and Bored Panda has collected the best of them in case you missed the phenomenon or can't get enough of it.
A total solar eclipse covered a narrow portion of the United States from Salem, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina. And a partial one was visible across the entire continent of North America, as well as in parts of South America, Africa, and Europe. This was the first time since 1918 when North America experienced the path of totality from coast to coast.

Oh my god, I've seen this as a Tumblr edit. The real thing is much more astounding.
This the most amazing photo of all. It totally captures the eclipse from beginning to end.
Yet another fake photo. At no point were the Sun & Moon so low on the horizon as to make this shot even remotely possible. Use your heads, people; This is elementary sh!t here.

Actually, not really. Unlike a lunar eclipse which is visible anywhere the full moon is visible, the total solar eclipse is only visible in a narrow band across a limited path on the earth. The only landmass this particular total eclipse eclipsed is the lower 48 states of America, crossing 14 of them. (Twelve, really, but two states have a tiny little corner of them in the path of totality, and that, for the very brief time it is there, about 35 seconds for Iowa, and about 50 seconds for Montana, still counts). Nevertheless, “One Of The Most Epic Astronomical Phenomenons [sic] Of The Century,” is a bit over the top.

This doesn't look real. I would think the moon would come from the outside to the other outside, not from the inside both directions.
It's either a multiple exposure shot, or several separate shots photoshopped together, to create a time lapse effect.

Load More Replies... Nice pic, but shopped. The sun doesn't travel fast enough to get these separate phases in 1 multi exposure shot. Or I guess technically, it could be done, but the camera would have to rotated an exact amount after each shot, with only the total eclipse with enough exposure to pick up the landscape. Would be very difficult to do.
It's called a composite shot. It is not made to make anyone think it is a single image, it is made to show the progression of something (i.e. an eclipse) across a place or landscape. And it's not called "shopped". This comes from Photoshop which is one of the most popular photo editing tools, but not the only one used. You could say it was edited. But then again, there aren't many photos that are not edited these days - from my point of view, it's part of the art of photography.

I felt very fortunate to have been able to see the eclipse. It is as awesome as people say and well worth the travel, ( not far for me ) and missing a day of work ( no PTO )

A more appropriate title would be "The 10+ Best Photoshops of Eclipse Pictures of 2017," because most of these are composites.
Agreed the close up are a little in doubt because you can't tell scale but most stock images of total eclipses are done like this to be inserted where needed but definite cons: #2 bollocks, #5 bollocks, #6 double-exposure bollocks #10 potential composite stolen from the actual photographer bollocks, can't %100 confirm but i've seen this exact image without the foreground (because zoomed in to this size you would not see this kind of foreground detail or comparitive size) from an entirely different photographer.

You don't have to stare at the sun to damage your eyes. The damage is usually not complete blindness if you did. But any educated optometrist will tell you, and they all did, that you should never look directly at the sun, even for a moment. It can at the very least cause short term discomfort and is ill advised. But Trump thinks that he smarter than everyone about everything. But please tell me how his B.S. in Econ helped him in this situation.
