Artist Makes Stone Look Soft By Twisting, Folding And Peeling It
José Manuel Castro López manipulates stone like it was soft clay. His sculptures are full of twists and turns, waves and wrinkles which contrast with the tough material and make you question the laws of physics.
The Spanish artist draws inspiration from Galician mythology: "My relationship with the stone is not physical, but magical," he told The Creators Project. "It recognizes me, it obeys me…we understand each other. My stones are not lifeless. They manifest themselves". To create these smooth textures López uses mostly quartz and granite.

How does he do this? The rock surface looks original...but can't be.???

"Question the laws of physics"? Jesus, what for? Maybe question the properties of granite and quartz, but hardly even that. While these pieces are undoubtedly cool, there's nothing here that classical sculptors haven't already hit out of the park ages ago.
I like how he calls himself magic. Pretentious much? I mean granted I couldn't do what he does but I'm sure there's stuff I can do he can't and I wouldn't go around all "Oh but I'm amazing and magic and I bend the natural laws of the universe that's how incredible I am."
It would be interesting to see what the rocks or stones looked like before the sculptor started working with them.
I take it the methods in producing these pieces are old hat, but they're sure are pleasing on the eyes :-)
Some of these look like they have the texture you get when you're making boiled sweets
Some of these are really cool!
His skills are considerable, but his trick bag isn't very deep. They're all just variations on a few basic themes.
I would like to see him actually knead these stones because I don't believe that's what he does. I believe he sculpts them ut of larger pieces then polishes them.
