Hostile architecture. You might not be familiar with the term, but you've probably seen it in action. Those spikes on the window ledges, designed to keep the birds away. Or, in a more sinister fashion, things like strategically-placed armrests or rocky floors, cynically installed to ensure that vulnerable people in need of shelter are forced to look elsewhere.

Not only are homeless folks discriminated against directly and culturally, but also structurally too. These exclusionary designs, denying people even the right to find a place to rest, are a stark illustration of our society's collective disregard for basic humanity. Surely we can do better than this?

This heartbreaking list, compiled by Bored Panda, shows some of the most offensive examples of 'anti-homeless' designs, and it will make you ever so grateful for that roof over your head. Because it seems that if misfortune strikes and you should one day happen to lose it, you are most certainly not welcome to try and find a place to sleep on the streets. Scroll down to see what we mean for yourself, and let us know what you think in the comments.

Homeless or not, wanderer or CEO, you simply don't destroy someone else property. This make me so angry.

Fark, can you imagine accidentally falling on it. They hate the beggars and the homeless so much they create a hard-core public danger.

Yeah, destruction of public property will get you that, regardless.

Public benches are for EVERYONE to enjoy, not for one person to tent out and hog it for as long as they want. Ok, not homeless, what would you say if some business took over a bench and doing their own advertising or modify it because they want to? Would you sit on a bench that reeks p**s and s**t? If you feel it’s such a social injustice, maybe you should invite them to dinner, your house, in exact clothes they are wearing, bare foot, and with their entire shopping cart full of “collectibles”. There are shelter and services available to them, but they don’t want it because of all the sober requirements. Their families don’t want to deal with them but when they acted out in public or got hurt, all the sudden, their loving families show up and sue cities.

Where do you expect the homeless to sleep? To p**s? To take a bath so they don't smell? In your loving home? I don't think so, I don't think you realise how inaccessible shelters and government help can be, some of these people have mental health problems, or drug addictions and we judge them and say that's why they're homeless but it's the opposite, it's because they're homeless that they become like this.

I understand that dilema they wanted to sleep somewhere. Its sad to ended up on Street and dont have a place to go. But i also understand the reason why the city dont want them sleeping on bench... First, benches are most likely located on frequently used paths. And they are there for people to sit and rest, not for homeless to sleep. In my country are two types of homeless, theese who want to leave the street ASAP, and those, Who actually dont want to leave, they just going on state office to get free medical insurance from the state, and rest of time they hanging outside the supermarkets, begging for money, drinking a cheap wine. They have several diseases, some of them are highly infectious and caused many problems like rushbor cogh, and someone can get such thing even from just touching something theese people touch before - i get really bad rush to my hand just because touched the door handle after one of them. So again like about the spikes. I understand the reason why :(

I don't know why people are so upset...it's not like they don't offer these people a place to sleep ....they CHOOSE not to sleep there cause they don't want to follow rules

It's not that black and white; some sleep shelters are for men only (!), others have limited beds and a cut-off time. Other than that, some homeless people simply prefer to fly solo..

If you're going to do this, then don't hide it as "art" but just admit that you're being cruel and kicking people who are already down
