This time, we’re looking at the differences between the United States and the United Kingdom. Even though both countries have a ‘special relationship’ (not to mention a rocky initial history together), far from everything is the same there. Hopping ‘over the pond’ means traveling a large distance both physically and culturally, too. Like you'd expect when going to any new country when you fly abroad.
Redditor TownImmediate9060 went on r/AskReddit and wanted to find out what’s socially acceptable in the US but would be horrifying in the UK. The thread went viral and the responses made us seriously realize the extent of the differences between the two allies. As an American, I have no way of judging what happens in other countries. I do know that we do get quite a few Canadians here that cannot wait the long time for help there & are willing to come here & pay for it.
That's because most doctors and facilities are owned by large corporations whose only interest is bleeding every dime they can from the patient. And secondly due to understaffing to the point mistakes run rampant which leads to lawsuits which leads to high insurance for the doctors and facilities. It's a vicious circle that began when corporations began taking over. It's now cheaper to go in with no insurance and pay the bill which they give a discount for doing so, than it is to go in with insurance.
Yeah... that's big... you live but you're too broke to live. Kill me now.
We are not the UK or any other country. Our customs are our own and have developed in part from our country's history. When I go to another country, I don't expect them to do things the way we do. Why do you folks expect that?
Ok, I have to ask, I hear horror stories about the UKs medical system continuously on all sorts of forms and blogs. Yes its free,but it takes for ever to get the correct appts , blotched surgeries, no recourse. take it or leave it type of care, unless your rich and pay for it. Can someone walk the dog on this? .

I hate that to not go bankrupt I have to pay a premium (mine is about $350 a month which I am told is cheap). There are copays, deductibles, max out of pocket limits, drug copays. Very confusing. And if you are on a tiere 3 drug, it can be expensive. My so called doctor want to put my on Ozempic. Its advertised with a s**t load of side effects by some fat guy who was on a tv show that was a 1/2 hour a week fat joke, and costs $1000 s month. No f*****g thanks.

I used to think healthcare in Mexico was expensive (if you didn't have insurance or "seguro popular" back in the day) until I learnt how much would you have to pay in the USA!
This has to change! I just paid 1,000 to have a small cut on my kids ear flushed with saline and sent home. No bandages, no stitches, no glue. And I already pay over 2k a month in insurance.
This is the biggest shame currently. Just received a bill that, if we didn't have insurance, would have cost us $14,000. $14,000 is what a non insured person has to pay. BUT THEY ONLY RECEIVED $400 FROM INSURANCE COMPANY and call it paid! Why is that legal? It truly is disgusting that one person had to pay $14,000 for the same thing that the insurance company only has to pay$400.....

My (British) partner & I (American) were in London, running late to meet our friends. Just as we get to the tube station, I see our train has just pulled in; we haul ass across platform and I yell, “HOLD THE DOOR.” Someone does, we make the train, I don’t see a problem. My partner, by contrast, is mortified. This was 4-5 years ago & he is still mortified. Apparently we were meant to just...let the train leave? Without us?? & wait for the next one???
On the tube, there's absolutely no reason to "hold the door". The next one will be in in a few minutes, and you will just be a little late. By holding, everyone on the train will be late, and there is actually a possibility that it travels down the line, delaying several trains.

For me as a Dutch person with several Flemish acquaintances it’s funny to read about these differences. The habits of our two neighboring countries (Netherlands and Flanders) are more or less the same, but we have misunderstanding in expressions sometimes, like buitenwipper (Fl: bouncer, Du: someone having sex outside), aftrekker (Fl: Corkscrew, Du: someone who’s jerking off) and poepen (fl: having sex, du: to defecate), to name the three most shocking ones 😀
