Someone Believes That People Who Don’t Smoke Are Boring, Gets The Perfect Lesson
There’s nothing romantic about a morning cigarette with a cup of coffee after coughing your lungs out. And even though cigarette smoking among U.S. adults (aged 18 and over) declined from 20.9 percent in 2005 to 15.5 percent in 2016, that means nearly 38 million American adults still smoke “every day” or “some days”, according to data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Powerful anti-smoking ads may have played a role in this decline, however, sometimes individual efforts can be just as effective. Recently, someone on tumblr tried to glorify cigarettes, so another user stepped in to share their take on it, and it’s so vivid it might change your perspective. I have never heard of "smokers placenta". I will have to Google this one.

I quit smoking almost 10 years ago. Aside from the smell, the health issues, and the cost, the biggest benefit is not having to plan my day around it. "How many cigarettes do I have? Do I have enough for tomorrow morning? Will I have enough time to buy more? How many smokes breaks will I get at work? Where can I smoke and not get yelled at?" All this is now a non-issue, thank goodness.
My dad is a smoker and it kills me to see. He frequently tries to quit but always ultimately fails and goes back. I feel so bad for him, he's dependent on that s**t. I just care about him too much to watch him wither away.
I can't stand smoking, it chokes me even thou I am not even allergic! And it especially enrages me how people just flick the cigarete butt anywhere like it's nothing. The whole town is padded with cigarette butts! Most dog owners are willing to pick up the poop after their dog on the street but smokers can't be bothered not to pollute everywhere. Not to mention how aggressive and defensive smokers get if you tell them anything against smoking and cigarettes. It really shows you how strong and bad addiction that is. One smoker even said it's "worse when someone is wearing cheap perfume than smoking". No, it's NOT! Cheap perfume won't cause cancer to you and everyone around you! The other was pissed off that her roomate could not stand the smoke, and was like "get over it!". It's really bad addiction, maybe the worst because it litterally kills even people around you.

The one that infuriates me is the mothers that smoke in an enclosed car with a baby or toddler in the back seat. They didn't ask to breathe in your bad habit. Either wait until you can step outside to have a smoke or stop smoking. I know 9 years ago in Washington State they were trying to make smoking in a car with children illegal because it was considered child endangerment. Now the law says you cannot smoke in a car with any child under the age of 17.
As someone who smokes, I am in now way defending these actions. My parents smoked (both have quit) but, they never smoked in the house, always went outside, and always made sure it was kept from me, so everyone can have different experiences growing up around smokers However, one thing that I wish non smokers would understand, is that smoking is an ADDICTION, not just a nasty habit. Been smoking for 11 years. Have been on pills, patches, gum, and even went through a cessation program. A man in my program said quitting heroin and alcohol were easier than quitting smoking. I have still not quit beyond 4 months. Stop shaming us. We all have reasons that we started, and just because you see us continue to do so, doesn't mean that we are trying to stop, and all of us are not inconsiderate a******s that blow smoke, dont care what we smell like, and we all have different addiction levels.

I never liked it. Hated the smell and the taste of ash in the air. I don't hate people who smoke, they're addicted to it. I've seen my parents try to quit several times and it usually doesn't last long. I'm worried about their health, but I can't make them quit. I guess I might be at risk, too. When I was little, the adults in my life didn't really bother going outside to smoke. My parents later made it a habit, but I inhaled quite a bit of it growing up.
I started smoking at the age of 17. I wanted to know what everyone got out of it. Because I didn't gag or cough on the first few cigs, I continued on till 4 years ago (I am now 52ish). I did smoke outside and I tried my hardest to smoke far away from the doors or anyone for that matter when I was getting my fix while shopping and whatnot. But I still had people get nasty with me. My son kept begging me to stop and I would agree to no avail. Finally, with the help of ecigs, I did quit in a few months. Now I am so blown away at how I must have smelled all those years!!! I can breathe now and I can enjoy my fave foods. My son hugs me all the time now instead of once in awhile. He said I smelled really bad. My advice to those wanting to quit is do it now! My advice to those wanting their loved ones to quit, understand it's an addiction and they will quit when they are ready, but be there for them as it is a hard road. Congrats to those who have also made that journey to be cig/smoke free!
We live in a small townhouse. Our new neighbours smoke. She is pregnant. That poor baby is going to be born addicted. She smokes on her front porch or her back deck. We can no longer keep our windows open or enjoy our backyard. It is disgusting on so many levels.
the baby might be born with low rate, but also may develop allergies or health issues, but she may not--being in a house with that much smoke will, however, affect her health
Load More Replies...Wait, some people still think smoking is cool? It's a disgusting habit. And it really makes everything smell. I hadn't noticed before, but after going to university and then back home for the holidays, the whole apartment smells of smoke. And the guy was lucky to wait to 18, I've been getting my parents cigarettes since I was 12. Most shops in Eastern Europe don't care if you say it's for your parents- which it was. Though the worst part is travelling with smokers. The stink of even one person smoking in small space like a car is horrible, add one more and now I avoid travelling by car with my parents.
Uhmmhmhmhm what? Just WHAT? I'm a smoker trying to quit (well, honestly I'm trying to cut down to only smoking the "special" cigarettes, like the first of the day, after a big meal, and so on) and this is by far the dumbest thing I've read on BP. Because I chose to start smoking 20 years or so ago, how does it make me a more interesting person than a non-smoker!?? This is dumb! Smoking is dumb! And everybody knows it, especially the smokers. I hate that I smoke, I regret it with all my heart every day. Right now I've been on only nicorettes for a week and it works fine, but I still long for that ultimate satisfaction I get by lighting up a cigarette and inhaling that smoke for the first couple of puffs. I long for it. And I know it's dumb AF. EDIT: And I agree: we should stop glorifying cigarettes (and a bunch of other stuff). I only started smoking because Madonna smoked back in the 80's and early 90's and it was glorified a lot on a bunch of pictures of her. It looked cool, you know.
Believe me or not, but I think smoke also kill your brain cell. The place I came from just put up a ban on smoking in any restaurant including open air one. Smokers are asked to go across the street to smoke. Guess what? The smokers around all went crazy, and they even start a fight to waiter who ask them to stop smoking, some even make video and place it on social media challenging the government to catch them for smoking in restaurant. My conclusion? Smoking doesn't only damage your lung, it kills your thinking capability too.
That’s extremely poor evidence for your hypothesis. Smoking isn’t favorable but your point was silly.

I wish I had a nickel for every time I have gone into a building, and there is someone smoking within 2 feet of the entrance. I quit smoking 4 years ago, so I understand that it is an addiction. But I NEVER blew smoke in someone's face, smoked in someone else's car or home, and never smoked 2 feet from a doorway. Having an addiction is no excuse for exposing other people to 2nd hand smoke. There are laws for a reason. BTW, I was recently diagnosed with COPD, so I'm now paying for my addiction. I have to wear a mask when I am around cigarette smoke, or even standing close to heavy smokers whose hair and clothing smell like smoke.
I started dating my hubby when he was 19; he smoked 2 packs a day. After our first kiss, I told him it was smoking or me, and to call me when he quit. He called my name as I walked away. He has not had a cigarette in 27 years and 3 months.
I'm honestly kinda glad I'm not the only one who has to go through school being told I smell like smoke because of my parents.
All. The. Time. It killed me too because I hated the smell worse than anybody who was complaining about it on me, I guarantee it.

Not deeming smoking a good idea is boring? It is likewise boring not to jump off bridges, not to hit yourself with a hammer in the head, not to touch open wires, not to drink petrol, not to engage in a fight with a lion, and so on and so forth. With so many other exciting things to do if you remain healthy, it might be a good choice to be boring in some regards. All those people claiming that they'd "rather die at 70 but have lived to the fullest" ignore that particularly smoking typically leads to so many ailments that it is not the reduced lifespan but the reduce quality of life that makes the difference.
A family friend of mine died age 95.. He smoked from when he was 14 years old up until he died.

My dad smoked 4 packs a day for 45 years, my mom one pack. I lived at home for 25 years in a time when people just smoked wherever. I would love to see if I have any ‘smokers inner parts’, very curious. I have néver smoked myself but I have also never held smoking against somebody, perhaps a fault of mine but I never have.
It is good that you don’t hold it against anybody. Judging people helps no one. Smokers are addicted, and need support if they want to quit.
Load More Replies...I was a smoker throughout art school (in the mid 1980's, when it was practically compulsory for art students to smoke)and for about 10 years after college. I tried quitting with the patch, and succeeded for two years! Then, one day when cleaning my closet I found an old unused patch... I opened it and smelled it...within a day I was smoking again. The nicotine addiction was that strong! I finally quit for good 18 years ago, when I decided to have a baby- it was hard, for sure, but a single phrase stopped me cold...I read that smoking(paraphrasing) "significantly lowers oxygen in the blood and can cause the placenta to CLAMP DOWN on the fetus!" Even before I got pregnant THAT was enough to get me to stop. Nobody was going to hurt my baby, least of all me! Good luck to anyone who is quitting! You CAN DO IT!
Pretty much everyone in my family smokes. I've begged my mother to quit, but she refuses, saying "many of my patients have smoked all their life and they are still fine" (she's a nurse). My uncle smokes two packs a day - he can't go half an hour without a smoke. Even my grandma smokes
Once I was walking my dog, and a smoker close by nearly threw the cigarette butt on my dog. I was so furious. I don't hold smoking against people, but please don't just throw cigarette butt on the ground.
My parents moved my grandparents things out of their house when they passed, and my grandpa smoked, killing my grandma in the process; anyway, when they moved the furniture and pictures, the walls were gray compared to the spot behind the things that were moved.
that's why my grandmother quit smoking--she washed her walls and was repulsed by what rolled down them
Load More Replies...My mom smoked her whole life, I never knew her natural scent because she always smelled like smoke, she passed away nearly 5 years ago , cigarette smoke repulses me, but the scent still reminds me of her.
I have severe asthma and all my childhood grownups were smoking everywhere. After smoking is banned in most places I enjoy life like I was not able before (going to a restaurant, the movies..even at work they were smoking during work, no break). I remember those long car rides as a kid, no window opened due to cold weather and the thick smoke settling, while trying to breathe through my sweatshirt. Whenever I hear a smoker complaining of having to go outside...well, it does not move me to tears...
My grandparents are smokers, luckily they go outside, but when they started it wasn't known the harm that they did and it was something "everybody does" they keep saying "they want to quit" but ik they're too addicted to. My aunt and uncle however are extreme smokers and I can't step foot in their house because it's soooo terrible!!!
Grew up in a smoking household and now I'm over the moon ecstatic that you can't smoke in restaurants, bars and AIRPLANES anymore. Yes kids, you used to be able to smoke in airplanes, and in the "smoking" section of a restaurant (which was right next to the non smoking section in an open room, and that's if they had a non smoking section at all).
My sister and I are the only ones in my immediate family who smoke. My mother held my nephew, and my sister could smell the smoke on him. Just from holding him. Mom’s walls are yellow. No one will smoke in my household when I acquire one. They can go outside.
My mother died of tobacco. It is an incredibly agonizing way to die. Quit now.
Both my parents smoked, in fact nearly every adult in my life smoked. I started at 12 because my older cousin was smoking and I pretty much did everything she told me to do. When my parents found out they acted angry but pretty much allowed me to smoke from then on. I only blame myself but wished it wasn't made so easy. I stopped at 27. I still worry about the effect on my body from starting while I was still developing.
I smoked for 19 1/2 yrs.. one day I said to myself that I didn't want to be a "20yr smoker" so i used a "puffer" before they became Public Enemy #1 and toothpicks and quit. That was 5yrs ago in November. My wife still smokes (outside ) and I have never once judged her or anyone else who smokes...nor do I change who I hang out with based on their smoking habits.
I agree that smoking obviously isn’t good, but I don’t think every picture that shows a person smoking is glorifying smoking.
Smoking harms the smoker more than anyone else. It is selfish to expose other smokers to second hand smoke, but some smokers are very conscious to avoid that. Smoking is stupid, but most start as teenagers when their brains are still developing, so it isn’t really fair to hold that against them. As for being bad for the environment, so is driving cars. While it is a problem on a mass level it isn’t a reason to judge individual smokers.
Load More Replies...Nowadays smoking cigarettes is becoming more unpopular which is a good thing but sadly many cannabis activists spread false propaganda how smoking weed is not bad for the lungs. All smoke have same carsinogens so if weed is legalized in more countries the governments should do everything that people would rather use cannabis as an edible form, vaporize the cannabis oil or enjoy it any other way than smoking the buds. I support the legalization or discrimination of cannabis but I also support the science. I hate how much b******t many cannabis activists often spread, like how it is a 'good idea to smoke weed when you are pregnant'.
Weed and tobacco do happen to have different effects on the lungs though.

My dad had a dinner-plate sized ashtray in the basement by his computer station. He filled it up with butts and rarely emptied it. It smelled like a*5 down there. Luckily he quit. He took up ballroom in the 90s and got healthy. He's looking and feeling pretty good these days.
My dad smoked as a teen. He never told me or my brother because he was afraid we would too. The only reason I know is because my grandma likes to tell people stuff (that they probably shouldn’t know). I hope my brother never finds out because I’m afraid he’ll do the same just because my dad did
My mother's parents smoked. Every evening there would be a haze of blue smoke hanging from the ceiling to about 3 feet off the floor. My father smoked three packs a day. My mother used to stop on the way home to buy him his cigarettes. My mother never smoked but died at the age of 70. The doctors didn't believe she had never smoked. My father felt the doctors killed her. Somehow. And when she died almost the first thing he said was, "who's going to buy my cigarettes now?" He eventually died after losing a lung to cancer.
there is no-one so militant as an ex-smoker. I quit 15 years ago, after smoking 1-2 packs per day for 8 years. I hate the smell, I hate the leathery skin effect (you can always tell the sun worshipers and the smokers by that tough old skin) and I hate what it does to the people forced to be around it. My friend, a non-smoker, had an apartment that reeked of cigarettes because the guy under her smoked. Not even in her won apartment could she escape that smell. It is pervasive and invasive. And gross.
When I was an infant my mother smoked while she was pregnant, in the house and everywhere around me. I went back and forth with her and my dad and he had to constantly take me to the doctors as I was always sick. The 1st 4 years of my life was spent on antibiotics and being scrubbed at least 3 times when he got me so that he could get all the dirt and smoke off me. He smokes but strictly outside. Never inside and never in the car. Even today I am dealing with medical issues caused by what happened when I was so young. If I am around a smoker for more than 24 hours and they smoke around me I will have a horrible cough and be dreadfully sick for a week. Smoking kills whether it is you or the ones around you. Quit smoking!!
Children of smokers who " smoke outside" have broken down products of cigarettes in their urine. This means these toxins have been through the kids' blood system and all throughout their young bodies. .. I read this in New Scientist magazine. Sorry I do not remember the issue date. .. but it was a proper study.
The smoke and particles come inside the house on the smokers' skin and clothes.

It took him a few tries - reminds me of Mark Twain's observation "Quitting smoking is easy - I've done it a hundred times." But he did it for the sake of my big brother. And me.
My mother smokes and my childhood wasn't like that, I mean we shouldn't romanticise smoking -obviously- but in my case my mother was careful and didn't smoke around children. It's more about common sense than smoking or not. Just do whatever you want but be respectful
My grandfather started smoking at 10, quite at 30, but my grandmother smoked until she was 75. Both my grandfathers died of cancer. I have friends who have tried to quit, for years.
... So, anyway, the boring, boring, boring not-smoking-supremacists are right in everything they say about smoking - they just suck anyway. It's quite annoying, and, by the way, it isn't very polite to reduce people to nothing more than one habit. MYOB! If someone would tell every fat person about the health issues that may result from being fat, this would be called "body shaming", no matter if that's what it's about - or it's about worrying and caring about a loved one's life. There are a lot of fatal diseases, too, that result from a shamable body ... or however this is called politically correct. Very few people are forced to smoke anyway - some animals are, but that's one of these vegan-supremacist-point-of-view problems that only exist in imagination, hm...? So ... although they're right, they are STILL boring AF. It's not about glorifying anything, it's about answering questions no one asked.
Ah, damned, it is not about glorification of cigarettes - it indeed is boring to always, always, always, over and over, again and over and again mention that cigarettes are bad for you health and cause diseases and stuff. Everybody knows. But, there's at least two points that suck about this mentionism: 1. humans do stupid things. They always did, always will, everyone, no excklusions. 2. There are a lot of things people do that don't harm themeselves in the first place, but harm other people, animals or the environment in total - and at least SOME of these are always, whenever mentioned, called a whole lot of things that "boring" sounds nice in comparison. Every vegetarian knows this, for example: Order food and ask about ingredients. Someone will, after the order is taken, ask why you care ... you explain ... you are called a sumpremacist, for pointing out a reality you've been asked for, a missionarian for being actually caring about things - and BP usually agrees with this BS...
And yet drinking alcohol is glorified and yet i would argue that some of its effects are worse. Some drinkers get extremely violent, jist ask all the kids whose moms and dads beat the s**t outta them daily after one too many drinks... drunk drivers have killed thousands of innocent people.. the health effects of alcohol are just as detrimental in the long term.. why dont we talk about that for a change? If smoking ans smokers are shat on so hard why arent drinkers given the same treatment. If i posted a picture smoking a cig, the comment section would probably look like this one, if i posted a pic with a cocktail i'd be told how good it looks blah blah..
You have to be 18 to get a gun, 21 for some types.

Load More Replies...Where I live, it is illegal to smoke indoors, and you must be 15 feet away from an entrance.

Havent been able to quit smoking as of yet but im getting there.Currently Been smoking once in every three weeks. iv tried nicotine patches and the product nobacco. Its pretty helpful. Hopefully I can completely quit for good. Wish me luck.
Load More Replies...My father smoked for years, but what got him to quit was when he saw a woman smoking whilst changing a diaper.
