I can confirm that working night shifts does weird things to people's brains!
When you have a full on conversation with someone at the end of the shift, makes sense to you but the person is looking at you like what??? "I said...gerfumple coffee and mashing rocks tomorrow"
Yes, i do 4 on 4 off night shifts and i don't what time of day or even what day it is sometimes. Don't get me started on trying to talk to anyone after said 12hr shift, i think i just mumble incoherently. And the random night shift belly aches from time to time.
I tend to finish my shift and have absolutely no recollection of at least half of it. Did I have a breakdown? Kill someone? I'll never know....
As a night shift worker and a nurse I can confirm both the "night shift brain" and the random stupidity of humans!
that's well past night shift and into I hope she got a full mental workover and maybe some medication for impulse control far past anything remotely normal or even ADHD.
This story will be told at Thanksgiving dinner every year for the rest of your life, lol.

Coulda just gone and thrown it up real quick. I did that when I accidentally swallowed part of my piercing. Literally no big deal. Would have saved a lot of money and hassle.
Not everyone can throw up on demand. I know I can't, and I have tried. But I agree going to the hospital was overkill... it's a just a small ring and she's not a child, it's obvious that it would come out the other end eventually.
...but why eat it and swallow it? Whatever impulse she was feeling, that seemed like the worst choice for her sister AND herself.

Like 30 years ago my older sisters and I were playing some boardgame and they teamed up against me over and over again. Finally I took the dice, swallowed them and walked away. Little sister 4 life!

I wonder why they take X-rays of small objects like this? People, especially small children, have eaten rings and coins as long as those have existed and it is usually harmless and you just have to wait until it comes out naturally. I understand the X-ray if she would have swallowed something more dangerous.
In case it's stuck somewhere it shouldn't be. Also, it can go in the trachea instead and this is really dangerous. I suppose it's a case of "Better safe then sorry". Probably most things come out naturally, but there would be 1% that don't that don't, so they check to make sure you won't be this 1%. In my country, as far as I know, if you aren't feeling bad, they would tell you to wait 1-2 days for nature to take it's course and if it still haven't come out after that, only then they would took and X-ray to check where it is.
I don't think the sister expected a magician for her birthday. "For my next trick, I will pass this stone through my body!"

People who don't know why they do things have very serious problems, and are in fact dangerous. If this is a true story, it is really not a laughing matter. People who do such things may seem mostly normal, but they are not. This woman needs to seek out a mental health professional, and she needs to carefully monitor her impluses as best she can while getting treatment. She must not allow herself to be alone with a vulnerable person. I worked as a companion for people with special needs for many years. People with certain kinds of very serious problems appear to be perfectly normal to most people, but without treatment, and without being taught self-control, they are a danger to themselves and others. Please heed my warning. Take care of yourself and others.
You're overreacting. She was just sleep deprived and still not fully awake and did a stupid thing she instantly realized was stupid. People do stupid things all the time when distracted.
