'Curry blend'???? What kind of curry, North Indian, South Indian, Korean, Chinese, Thai??? The word 'curry' is a suffix, it is supposed to be added after the region it is inspired from!

I always thought dry spices are forever. It's not true ? I use too many, no chance to stay even for a year.

Then you're fine, but the older they get, the less flavor until they're just expensive dust.

StillTasty.com is a great resource to determine if your food can still be eaten past the “best by” or “use by” date, or if you’re better off throwing it out.

I thought that canned foods were good indefinitely, as long as they weren't dented or rusted. Thoughts?

The coffee one is absurd. Coffee is a lot like wine - once it's exposed to oxygen it starts decaying, getting worse by the day. Within a couple of weeks you're left with a terrible, bitter flavor from being so stale and broken down. It'll hold for few months if sealed - but needs to have a one-way valve so it can degas.

Thanks to being on lockdown and not wanting to go out grocery shopping, I can confirm that properly stored tomato soup is just fine 6 years after the date, so is dried tabbouleh mix.

Most ambient stuff will keep indefinitely if not exposed to the air and their packaging is uncompromised.

Artificial sweeteners start to break down after a time and the Diet Coke will no longer be sweet. At all.

Don't buy spices for a year. They lose their aroma after a few months.

If most foods can last longer than the best before dates, why are they so wrong? I guess it's to make us buy more food products.

Its when they start to be past their best - losing some of their flavour/texture. In some cases (cans and jars) they can separate and look less appealing (but a quick shake corrects that). There is a small element of making us buy more, but that's just understanding the psychology of maybe not wanting to eat something slightly stale, if you have the option of buying fresh. This is BEST BEFORE dates though - USE BY dates are for health reasons and should not be taken as lightly. (And cranberry sauce should never rattle...)

This heavily relies on storage conditions, though. Moreover, not all of these will sustain their taste. Coffee in fact is best within mere weeks of being roasted, i.e. it is losing quality long before its expiration date.

I have kept pasta for a lot longer than 2 - 3 years and perfectly good. Coffee for up to five years. Peanut butter three years Carb. Beverage on its side lying down for several years. peanut butter 3 years Spag. Sauce up to two years. Canned goods I have in my pantry now some are 4 years old and not a problem. Dry spice on going no time limit some I have had for 6 years , and still using.

Ever thought about the expiration date on tea? 6 months? It took the ships up to 2 years to get from China to England, without modern packaging technology. And it became the most important drink for the British for the last 5 centuries

As if ground coffee in cans wasn't super stale when it arrives at the grocery! I can't stand the stuff; smells like rotting fruit. Grind beans in-store, people. The difference in taste (and smell) is amazing.

You can use the bottom of a springform pan, also. Lemon will not only kill the natural fish's flavor, but will also overcook it. If you like your fish lemon-ey, just add some zeste on top instead (grated lemon skin)
