People Share Mindblowing Pairs Of Animals That Look Similar But Are Genetically Incompatible
For a really long time, biologists tried to unwrap the evolutionary history of various animals to figure out how they are related to one another. They have taken a seemingly logical course — to classify animals according to their morphological characteristics and fossil records. Thus, many similarly looking animals were presumed to have come from the same ancestors. However, scientists eventually realized that this sort of classification is not always accurate. Many morphological traits, such as, having wings or thumbs, may evolve multiple times, resulting in species that have similar traits but share a different evolutionary history. Things have changed with the recent advancement of molecular technologies. Scientists are now able to perform genetic analyses instead of relying on traditional morphological and fossil data. This has posed some rather interesting results and completely changed the way we look at some animals. For those who have been completely unaware of this advancement, the findings can be quite shocking.Recently, Tumblr users shared what they have found out from genetic analyses performed by scientists and shared what surprised them the most. Scroll down below for a few most uncanny animal pairs that look similar but are genetically very distant!

Well this was an eye opener. This is the kind of thing on here I come looking for. Best read on here in a long time
I really enjoy posts like this but would prefer some sources other than people from Tumblr. They could just be making it all up.
These are known phylogeny. Available for many years in many textbooks. no source needed.

Different animals can share different versions of the same gene, so is it overall difference in the amino acids that make up the genes and strands of DNA? How does different animals having different number of chromosomes affect the calculation?
It's good to have your mind boggled occasionally. This did it for me.
As an ecologist I was also pretty surprised (and delighted, TBH) when I learned that all whales are descendants of ruminents. However, this is fairly clear when you look at the stomach of a whale. It has multiple stomachs, like a ruminant, not a simple stomach like predators and omnivores. On the other hand, seals and sea-lions descended from predators.
I just found out that Manatees are genetically related to elephants
Excellent post. Today I've learnt new things, I'm richer than a couple of minutes ago!
There was a brilliant story I'd read in my newspaper ( I know!) a few years back about two species of fern that had bred with each other. But they were so apart genetically, it was the equivalent of a human breeding with a fish. That's how distant these ferns were from each other.
Does anyone know what that blue falcon-looking thing is?
I've always enjoyed looking at mutts (dogs) and trying to guess which purebreds may be involved. Not to say I'm perfect but - I'm pretty good. That said I now have a new dog, 12-13 weeks old, and having fun trying to guess which breeds got included in his mix. So far I'm guessing; dachshund, chihuahua, and pug. What do you think? 74305134_5...ba1702.jpg
Something bigger than any of those 3. Just look at those paws!! Him gonna be a big boy! Withe coloring, maybe a type of retriever or shepherd?

Hare/Rabbit (now I know they're completely different), Horse/Zebra, Turtle/Tortoise, Frog/Toad, Moth/Butterfly, Wolf/Dog (now I know they aren't too different), Buffalo/Cow, Dolphin/KillerWhale, Squid/Octopus, Leech/Slug, Lizard/Iguana, Koi/Goldfish, Lion/Tiger, Sheep/Goat, Antelope/Gazelle/Deer/Impala/Moose (& the rest of the similar like the five), Mice/Hamster/GuineaPigs & so on. At least there's two that looks similar to each other yet different & the hare vs rabbit thing is the most shocking one to me haha.
Tortoises are turtles. Toads are frogs. Killer whales are dolphins. Iguanas are lizards. Gazelle are antelope. Impala are also antelope. Moose are deer. Guinea pigs are very unrelated to mice and hamsters.

Your assertion that there is "no supporting evidence" is false. Any scientifically literate person can read one of the hundreds of peer-reviewed articles which provide the evidence for this.

Yeah, because you've definitely spoken to every person on the planet to know whether they say breed or species. I happen to have two friends who get them mixed up, so maybe you're the one with fake "facts."

Seriously? You've NEVER heard ANYONE refer to ANYTHING as a "breed" besides a cat and dog?
Load More Replies...I'm fairly sure that isn't true. We are much closer to chickens than plants. I require sources for your assertion.
