A given name is certainly a crucial part of someone’s life and identity. After all, it’s what’s going to be written on your documents and what most people will use to address you officially. However, a name that you create for yourself or that others give you can be as important as your “real” one. Giving someone a nickname is usually an act that occurs to simplify communication or make it more playful and personal. Being someone with a long name, I especially relate to the former.
However, sometimes nickname-giving can be slightly mischievous, and not necessarily in an offensive way. Sometimes people will give out nicknames that are there to brighten everyone’s mood, and not to make someone feel bad. Today’s post is exactly about that - slightly mischievous nicknames that stuck to people in the old days of high school. The Twitter post that inspired this post went viral, collecting 39.6k likes and told the story of the guy everybody called "pants", which inspired others to share their memories of high school nicknames. There are four coopers at my school. They are all quite popular so when we say their names you gotta either say their last name or their first and last.
The very concept of high school nicknames is kind of odd and silly. People will pick up upon the most random thing and make it part of their daily interactions. Which isn't inherently bad, because a lot of the time, these nicknames will stick and make the repetitive nature of the routine and names less boring.

The randomness of these nicknames is, what I feel, makes them so entertaining. It seems as if one can take anything about a person, or what they've done and attach that to them as a way to address them.
This reminds me of when I was new to a school and didn't know anyone. I was nervous for my first class and then the teacher does attendance... My nickname for the last ten years has been Lanye (Like Kanye with an L) Northeast.

Sibling nicknames are often ridiculous. I'm putting together a slideshow for my sister's 21st and am planning on going through all of them. Her name is Caitlin, so there were variations on that like, Cat, Kitty-Cait, Caitie etc but then there is Chicken (no idea why that started, but apparently after we began calling her that she convinced herself that she actually was a chicken) Crumby monster (because she still can't eat something without leaving crumbs everywhere) and Devil child (because she almost always has really big dilated pupils).

Some friends and I got into a discussion about what our names were in Spanish. Mine was pronounced, "Hoo-deeth". So they started calling me that. Next it was shortened to, "Hoo-dee". Then it became, "Hoo-der". When they started calling me, "Hoo-ters", I put a stop to the whole thing.
My son at 4 was told by older son, "that's your opinion, man." Little guy responded, " I am not pinion man!" Pinion Man is now 18.

My mom's sister (my aunt's) name is Gretchen and when they were in elementary school there was another kid with a really bad speech impediment and couldn't pronounce her name so he ended up calling her Richard. So throughout her entire life her nickname was always Richard. Even now in her 60's we sometimes refer to her as auntie Richard. Lol

Nicknames are amazing, one of our friends is called 'channel 5' because about 20 years ago he was watching channel 5 for two nights in a row when we went to his house, another is called 'clean sheet' because didn't lose at MarioKart64 for 3 days in a row in the mid 90s, another called 'buck' because he got kicked in the teeth by a horse and another called 'kinger' because he asked whey Prince Philip isn't king once when we were in school, oh another called 'wafer' because he used to have a lot of wafer thin ham in his sandwiches at school.
